Even the sky is no limit for India’s young space enthusiasts

(July 17, 2022) In a historic decision in June 2022, the government of India opened the country’s space sector to private players. “This will unlock India’s potential in the space sector,” said Union Minister Jitendra Singh, who made the announcement. With Elon Musk’s SpaceX making leaps in the industry, as well as the successful launch of Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic, it’s no surprise that the burgeoning sector is attracting the world’s brightest minds. And in India, it’s the thought of colonising Mars or travelling through the solar system is an appeal like no other for some of the brightest young minds. Global Indian takes a look at teens who are already making a foray into space tech.
Rifath Sharook, inventor of KalamSat – world’s lightest satellite

As children most of us are obsessed with the space, universe and its workings, but the fascination often fades away as we grow old. But not for Tamil Nadu’s Rifath Sharook who was keen to explore the space and invented world’s lightest satellite, which only weights 64 grams. The 23-year-old genius applied the 3D technology to manufacture the mini satellite – KalamSat – which entered the orbit during a mission of the Terrier Orion sounding rocket in June 2022 by NASA. Built in carbon fibre, the mini satellite completed its mission in 12 minutes, and scripted history for being the first 3D printed satellite to make it to space.
It was his father who played the role of a North Star in Rifath’s life and career. Being a space research scientist, he taught the young physicist to observe the stars at a young age. This fascination for the outer space led him to the path of aerospace engineering at a young age, and made him one of the leading scientists at Space Kidz India – a Chennai-based space organisation. It was at the space challenge contest ‘Cubes of Space’ that Rifath came up with the idea of a mini satellite that can be used as a radio reflector and a backup communication during disaster.
Before KalamSat, Rifath, who has made a name for himself in the space tech, built a helium weather balloon at the age of 15 as part of competition for young scientists.

Snehadeep Kumar, founder, Nebula Space Organisation

On July 1, 2022, 17-year-old Snehadeep Kumar was awarded the Kentucky Colonel, by the United States Government, courtesy of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. He’s one of the few Indians to receive the honour, which has been given to icons like Muhammed Ali Bob Dylan, Ansel Adams, George Clooney and George HW Bush. In 2021, the aspiring young astrophysicist founded the Nebula Space Organisation, a first of its kind, student-run initiative.
Their website opens up into some serious astro photography, with telescope photos shot by members from around the world. “We would like to build the world’s smallest, functional space telescope and if all goes well, launch it by 2023-24,” he says. They’re also studying the Milankovitch Cycles (changes in climate caused by the Earth’s movements) and hope to apply its principles on Mars.
“We’re researching what it takes to create a floating settlement on Mars.” The Nebula Space Organisation is now collaborating with Harvard University, working with students and faculty from various departments. Snehadeep is also part of the Asteroid Search by NASA’s Astronomers without Borders.

Nikhitha C: The entrepreneur who has brought space science education to the world

The 26-year-old entrepreneur, Nikhitha C, has co-founded the hugely popular Society for Space Education Research and Development (SSERD) – an NGO and the startup, GenexSpace with the vision to train students in the field of space education and outreach in India and abroad.
It all began while pursuing bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering from Alliance University in Bangalore that she started a space club in her college in 2016, teaching subjects like model rocketry to students. The initial success of the initiative nudged her to expand it further, and she did it with the help of entrepreneur Sujay Sreedhar to find her feet in the space tech.
Over, the years, Nikhitha has become a renowned name in space education, collaborating with many schools and organisations across the globe to increase the knowledge of young minds about space and technology. Taking a leaf out of NASA, SSERD conducts space camps to provide quality training to people who otherwise find it hard unaffordable – due to cost and other factors. “It costs several lakhs to attend (NASA), and students miss out on it because of that. So, we offered a similar alternative here,” she mentioned in an interview with ThePrint.

One of the biggest environmental issues that humankind is facing is the fast depletion of the Earth’s ozone layer. Shielding the planet from harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun, the thinning of this layer can cause several health hazards. Learning about this information from their school teacher, two students of the Sindhi Model Senior Secondary School, Chennai, recently developed a satellite model that might help mend the ozone layer.

T Mohamed Nadhim and M Pratham Peshwani have been obsessed with space technology since they were very young. The classmates would get together to read about astrophysics and space technology, even though the subjects were not a part of their regular curriculum. Their good grasp of the subject, and inquisitiveness to solve the ozone problem, led them to work on the Ozone Reinstation Satellite Project. In their model, the duo has used satellite technology to fill the holes in the ozone layer. Having passed many virtual simulation tests, the two even presented their project at the CODISSIA Science and Technology exhibition. Currently, the duo, who is inspired to make it big in the space tech, is working on acquiring a patent for their project.

After months of hard work, the innovator nailed the solution in JTremor-3D, a wearable device that enables the tracking of tremors every 1/10th of a second in a person's body, and stores the data in a Cloud database, which is then sent to the doctor after the information is processed. Embedded with sensors and accelerometers and gyro meters, this device helps in producing the data that can help determine the course of action for a patient.

Brainstorming for the possible solution, she found her inspiration in a quote she read a while ago - 'One cannot control what one cannot measure'. It stayed with her for a while and helped her realise that the only way to control the tremors would be to measure them.

But to reach a plausible solution, she had to go through permutation and combination. "Research showed that such devices already exist, but they’re bulky and limited to only clinical trials and research purposes. There were no wearable devices that were of everyday use or that could allow doctors to prescribe medication according to the needs of the patients," she added. This led her to work on JTremor3D - which was initially designed as a small box that needed to be strapped to the body. However, a few prototypes later she zeroed in on a hand glove, which is priced at ₹9000.

The innovation won her many accolades including Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Ignited mind Children Creativity and Innovation Award 2020, Grand Award at IRIS National Fair 2021, and Science Seed award at ISEF from Society of Science, USA 2021. However, the more was published about her innovation, the more she realised the huge information gap exists among patients and families in towns and villages in India. That's when she started Why Beat-The-Tremor Foundation with the aim "to bridge this gap with the mission to support the patients of Parkinson's Disease in India, virtually for now," reads the website." There is a need to capture and curate relevant information (suitable diet, exercises, treatment options) and make it available to the patients and their family members in the language of their choice," adds the innovator.

Having already filed for the patent, she intends to make it available in the market as soon as possible. She is inspired to help patients get better treatment, and she is leaving no stone unturned to make it happen.

Sarvesh Prabhu’s bio-insecticide is a boon for farmers

(February 18, 2023) Sarvesh Prabhu can leave audiences spellbound with his live performances of Carnatic music, beat you at a game of chess or show you some swift swimming strokes. Playing a piano comes naturally to him. Academics? Well, he is good at that too. When he is not doing any of the above, you can find him patiently searching for insect larvae in the millet field, in the middle of a hot afternoon! The 17-year-old represented India at the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Atlanta, USA last year and won the third prize and US $1000 in the biochemistry category for developing a cost-effective bio-insecticide from the leaves of the ‘bullock’s heart’ (Annona reticulata) popularly known as Ramphal. “My diverse interests and activities have helped me develop into a well-rounded individual capable of bringing joy, creativity, and compassion to the world,” smiles Sarvesh Prabhu, a research intern at the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), Hyderabad, in conversation with Global Indian. How it began

During the pandemic-induced lockdown, Prabhu took to gardening, like many others. “But the yield was disappointing due to insect damage. After some thinking and a few experiments, I created a bio-insecticide using Ramphal as it was the only tree in my garden that wasn’t damaged by pests,” says the youngster. It taught him the basics of chemistry, biochemistry, and entomology. “It ended up creating an affordable solution for small-scale farmers.”

The project titled, ‘A novel study of bio-insecticidal properties of Annona reticulata’ showcased the bio-insecticidal properties of the leaves of the plant. Traditionally, the extracts of various parts of this plant have been used to treat diseases like dysentery and pediculosis. The study revealed that extracts from its leaves could be effective against three disastrous pests, with the mortality rate ranging from 78-88%.

The use of chemical insecticides increases the cost of cultivation from ₹2,000 to ₹4,200 per acre, they also destroy the beneficial insects and contaminate the soil and food produce. On the other hand, bio-insecticide is eco-friendly and the cost of making the insecticide from leaves costs ₹27 per litre, making it affordable.

Global reach

“The solution not only protects crops but also generates additional income through selling the fruits for food and the leaves for producing the bio-pesticide,” points out Sarvesh, who presented the outcome of his research at the world’s largest pre-college science fair in Atlanta.

For Sarvesh, the ISEF will always hold a special place in his heart. “Interacting with delegates and individuals who shared similar aspirations broadened my perspective,” recalls the young researcher, describing the competition as nerve-wracking.

Post his first overseas trip to US, Sarvesh traveled to the UK and then to South Korea as part of the Atlas fellowship and Korean Cultural Centre India respectively in October-November last year.

“These trips have been instrumental in shaping my personality,” says the youngster, who was also awarded the first prize and Rs one lakh by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, as part of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) Innovation Award for School Children.

Diversity at home

The son of a central government employee, Sarvesh was born in Lucknow and studied across India, including including Mumbai, Bangalore, Kozhikode, Raipur and finally Hyderabad. “My father's job required frequent relocations, which allowed me to learn new languages and cultures,” says the youngster, whose mother is a home maker.

Academics, he says, was never challenging for him, although he was often close to the attendance cutoff. “Nonetheless, I wrote my exams with confidence and passed them easily,” adds Sarvesh, who describes his school days as being "seldom in school" as his focus was on learning and exploring the world through interactions with people and their experiences.

Exploring scientific research

His internship at the ICRISAT's Entomology department commenced in September last year. It offered him an opportunity to gain practical experience in insect biology and research.

“I learn the methods for rearing insects and studying their life cycles. Besides, I participate in bioassays, such as detached leaf and pod bioassays and diet feed-based bioassays,” explains the XII student of FIIT JEE junior college, Hyderabad.

Visiting ICRISAT at least thrice a week, he also gained expertise in Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GCMS) and High-Pressure Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) analysis and basic phytochemical testing.

Sarvesh says ICRISAT's Entomology unit has one of the best insect-rearing facilities in India, maintaining five to six insect cultures year-round and providing a regular supply of insect cultures and training on rearing and screening protocols to other research institutions.

“My internship with Dr. Jagdish Jaba, Scientist in the Entomology department, is extremely beneficial. I gained a lot of knowledge about insects and research methods. The guidance for research is excellent,” he says.

What’s in store?

As for his future plans, Sarvesh wants to pursue a career in research and natural sciences. “But right now, my entire focus is on preparing for my board exams (in February-March).”

Sarvesh is also a socially conscious person who strives to make a positive impact on the community. “I established ‘The Healing Hut’ a non-profit organization aimed at making mental therapy accessible to those who might not otherwise have access,” says the youngster, who has been able to provide a path of recovery and healing to many people struggling with mental health issues.

Spaceonova: Enabling space tech for therapeutic applications

(August 11, 2022) India's Space Activity Bill 2022 is all set to give private sector participation in space tech the launch pad for which they have been waiting. As space-related activity and research are ramped up around the world, India, which is home to over 100 spacetech startups, intends to be a major a global player. In November 2021, Hyderabad-based space tech firm Skyroot Aerospace successfully test fired Dhawan 1, India's first privately-built fully Cryogenic rocket engine. As Skyroot makes headway on its launch vehicle, Vikram-1, the company will give private innovation another boost, through its collaboration with Spaceonova. A space-research startup co-founded by Shivam Singh and Dr Shreya Santra, Spaceonova is currently developing a one-of-a-kind miniaturised lab in space that will be launched on Vikram-1. "We are looking at biophysical experiments in microgravity using technology called micro-electromechanical systems," Shivam says, in an interview with Global Indian.This year, Shivam will head to the US to complete his training as a Scientist-Astronaut Candidate by Project PoSSUM, the Aeronomy Research Program at the International Institute of Astronautical Sciences (IIAS). The Incubation Centre falls under the umbrella of the Atal Incubation Mission, a non-profit company established in 2019. It is part of the larger Atal Innovation Mission, a flagship initiative by the government of India and NITI Aayog. "Here, we have access to the high-tech biological labs and other facilities we need," Shivam says.

Missing out on IIT to being a citizen space scientist

Born in Visakhapatnam, into a Navy family, Shivam's early years were spent moving around the country. He returned to hometown and finished his tenth grade at the Navy Children's School, showing a deep interest in both science and psychology. So, he ended up at the FIITJEE junior college with a 100 percent scholarship, where all roads led to IIT and the focus was concentrated solely on strategising for the rigorous entrance exam.

 "I almost gave up on studying at that point," Shivam admits. "I spent two years thinking of everything except my coursework." He didn't get into the IIT of his choice and instead joined Delhi University for a BSc Honours in Electronics. "There was a certain mindset at the time - if you take BSc, you are a failure," he remarks. "But I decided to follow my passion for the subject and prepare for B.Tech. The course also had an entrepreneurial element, which interested me."

In college, Shivam, who was interning with i3 Indya Technologies, would conduct technical workshops at local colleges. As he did this, he realised the glaring gaps in the system and the fact that students aren't adequately prepared to meet industrial needs. "Even the IITs train you to work at Google and other MNCs but don't really delve into newer technologies," he says. At the same time, he and a friend were discussing the absence of telescopes in college and decided to start their own astronomy club, Vyoma. This was back in 2019. "We did some research and participated in an asteroid search, we managed to locate three confirmed asteroids," Shivam says. Hhey also interned with the Star Lab in Surat, which was working to build a 3D printed, high-powered rocket. "They were working on the recovery system and although I didn't have enough knowledge then, I joined the team as a Systems and Propulsions Engineer."

 How Spaceonova came to be

One year later, Vyoma, which began amid great opposition from their seniors in college, emerged as Spaceonova. At the time, their aim was to teach astronomy and the latest technology to students and faculty in their college and to underprivileged kids. The idea was to "create a space ecosystem where anyone can be a space technologist." So far, over 45,000 students across some 40 countries have been impacted by their work, which involves helping them to pursue careers in the space sciences.

 In August 2021, their organisation became Spaceonova Private Limited, a space tech and research company, which received its government of India recognition in October that year. "We have two laterals," Shivam explains. "One is space research and tech, we're using microgravity research for therapeutic applications."

 Microgravity is a condition in which the pull of gravity is so low that objects appear weightless. These  'G-forces' can never entirely be absent - however, one would have to go very far from the Earth's orbit to experience this state. "We are looking at simulators, high altitude balloons and parabolic flights to create microgravity conditions," Shivam explains. "We could, for instance, launch our lab in a balloon and allow it to free fall, mimicking microgravity for a few seconds. This will give us real-time data on how the lab performs."

High altitude balloon tests for the miniature lab are being planned for the end of 2022. "This is our milestone for the year. Once it's done, we move to space qualification testing and expose it to thermal radiation. Next year comes the orbital launch." They are also working to access parabolic flights through the US-based spaceflight services. A Falcon 20 aircraft is specially modified to simulate microgravity conditions.

Revolutionising therapeutic research

The possibilities of using microgravity are endless, especially in terms of therapeutic applications," Shivam says. "For instance, there are many recessive traits which are revealed in those conditions that are not revealed on earth. It can lead to faster R&D, more innovation and generation of IP and holds great potential in pharmaceuticals, biotechnology and fluid physics." Pharma giant AstraZeneca has been studying nanoparticle formation in microgravity to revolutionise molecular-targeting strategies in drug delivery systems.

"In India, we still tend to think of space research in terms of satellites and launch vehicles," Shivam remarks. "But there are many companies already exploring therapeutic applications, software and space robotics." Spaceonova currently has a core team of four people, led by Dr Shreya Shanta and Shivam.

EE 30 Under 30 Ajay Sawant: The marine conservationist saving our oceans

(November 23, 2024) Growing up near the sea in Mumbai, Ajay Sawant spent hours collecting shells as a child. He was in love with the ocean, and always wanted to give back to it. But little did that young boy know that years later, he would be recognised by the North American Association of Environmental Education (NAAEE) as one of their EE 30 Under 30 honourees for his dedication to educating coastal communities on the importance of marine conservation and climate resilience. "I was stunned because such recognitions keep you motivated and reaffirm that you are on the right path," Ajay tells Global Indian. He is among the 30 passionate and forward-thinking leaders from 19 countries committed to meaningful change. "It was a chance for me to reflect on my journey as a coastal kid who loved collecting shells and then aspiring to become a marine conservationist. It also makes me realise that every small step grows into something impactful. It also reinforces that my commitment to advocating for the ocean is equally important," adds Ajay, who is excited to connect with people who are creating an impact. The 23-year-old, who is pursuing his bachelors in veterinary medicine, adds that such recognition also brings a sense of responsibility as there is no going back. "For me, it has always been a personal story as I have a special connection with the ocean."

Giving back to the ocean

Growing up near the Arabian Sea in Mumbai, Ajay Sawant loved spending hours on the beach and would often see driftwood, sea shells, and corals, the "treasures that the ocean brought with it." But over the years, he began noticing that the sea brought different gifts - "plastic bottles, tangled nets, and foreign things that didn't exist on the beach." That was Ajay's big moment when he realised that the ocean that he loved was under threat and he needed to do something about it. "My journey that began with collecting seashells transitioned to collecting plastic and soon became a larger cause which propelled me into becoming a marine conservationist."

However, he was keen to combine activism with art. Even as a child, art held a special place for him so when he saw plastic on the beaches, he wanted to create awareness through art. "Picking up plastic and converting it into art was my way of rebellion against marine plastic. Ocean gave me a lot and I wanted to give back to it, even if it meant taking small steps." He chose the path of artivism, using art for activism. "Art is powerful as it transcends languages and directly connects with emotions." Being a shy kid himself, he found art as the perfect means to express himself. "For many youngsters, activism can feel intimidating or inaccessible as not everyone is an extrovert. So I felt combining art with activism was a better way."

Blending art and activism for ocean conservation

One balmy morning Ajay, who was creating art from plastic collected on the beach, met a person who introduced him to the Bow Seat Ocean Awareness Contest. "I was intrigued and did some research. It's an organisation that educates and engages young people in ocean conservation through the arts." Despite trying for three years, he couldn't make it to the contest but he did end up earning the post of a young advisory council who would help grantees as mentors. "It was a turning point for me that changed the trajectory of my marine conservation journey."

His early days at the program introduced him to a pool of young people from across the world, all dedicated to mentoring the grantees funded by Bow Seat. He recalls a 16-year-old fellow from Mexico who creates sustainable plastic from seaweed, which he found inspiring. "This motivated me to do something for the ocean. Especially in a country like India, we have many young climate activists but not many ocean advocates. My journey was lonely but becoming a part of an organisation helped me connect with like-minded people who were particularly interested in working towards the ocean. Especially, since Bow Seat works in artivism, it was a perfect match for me," he adds.

Having found his calling in artivism, Ajay founded Generation Artivism in 2022 - a platform empowering young people to channel their environmental concerns through art. "I wanted youngsters to use art to convey complex issues like climate change, coral degradation, plastic pollution, or any other cause," says Ajay, who conducted workshops where participants created thought-provoking art installations inspired by beach waves. "Ocean pollution is a crisis that we can solve and art provides a powerful way for them to express themselves."

Generation Artivism works closely with Bow Seat, one of the largest youth-led creative arts programs for the environment. In the last two years, they have impacted nearly 5000 people through intergenerational art exchange and cross-art exchange. "It helps shift perspective as water or ocean means different to different people. We use such art exhibits to create awareness without being too preachy," says Ajay, who has conducted art exhibits in parts of India and Bali in Indonesia. Inspiring youth to protect marine ecosystems

Think Ocean Society is a youth-led nonprofit based in Boston, which is currently active in five countries - India, the US, Cameroon, Uganda, and Nigeria - and works on all aspects of ocean conservation, ocean literacy as well as direct intervention. "We empower local people to take action for themselves by collaborating with regional organisations." In Cameroon, they have planted 5000 mangroves bringing a positive impact on biodiversity and return of fish species that had almost become extinct. "We involve young kids or marginalised women in plantation and restoration of mangroves. In India, we run a podcast on sustainability," reveals Ajay.

Promoting ocean literacy has been a priority for Ajay Sawant, who in 2022 began developing the Youth Action Ocean Toolkit. This initiative aims to educate young people about marine protected areas and inspire them to get involved in safeguarding these crucial ecosystems. The toolkit aligns with the 30 by 30 goal—also known as Target 3 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework—a global effort to protect 30 percent of the planet's land and ocean by 2030 to ensure a sustainable future for life on Earth.

Funded by National Geographic through their $75,000 youth program, the toolkit showcases the impact of conservation on marine life worldwide. Ajay shares an example from California, where efforts revived a struggling marine ecosystem. "Fish were nearly extinct," he says. "Now, a decade later, fishermen scuba dive for sustainable livelihoods. It shows how marine ecosystems can recover with proper care."

Highlighting the role the local communities can play as the protector of their waters, Ajay says, "In Hawaii, community-based fishing areas help protect marine life. When fish populations decline, the community turns to a traditional practice called kapu, which limits how much fish can be harvested. Since reintroducing kapu, fish stocks have grown, helping the local community sustain their livelihoods."

Looking forward to a positive change

The marine conservationist believes that his generation is positively working towards fighting climate change. However, he feels the ocean is largely ignored. "Even SDG 14 - Life Below Water is the most underrated and underfunded of the SDGs. Moreover, land-based systems to combat climate change aren't working anymore. In 2023, trees and land absorbed almost no carbon dioxide. It is shocking as we have been working on land-based systems so much but it was the ocean that has been absorbing about 30 percent of the carbon dioxide released in the atmosphere. It is the best nature-based solution and we need to divert our attention towards it."

Sharing his plans, the young marine conservationist, who has till now reached 11,200 people through webinars, seminars, and workshops, reveals that he wants to empower young people to take action for their communities rather than indulging in direct intervention. "With Generation Artivism, I want to help young people find their voice in advocacy," says Ajay, who loves reading books and making cartoons. Ajay is hopeful about the future of marine conservation in India. "Change is happening but needs to be faster," he signs off.

Maya Burhanpurkar: Harvard’s whiz kid heads off to Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar

(June 16, 2022) When she travelled to the Arctic in 2013, Canadian student and researcher Maya Burhanpurkar was, understandably, blown away by the incredible beauty of the glacial landscapes that surrounded her. There was, however, a sense of foreboding - the massive glaciers that typically flow to the ocean and become icebergs were grounding out before her eyes. "It struck me that the icebergs we were seeing could be some of the last anyone would ever see. And that it could happen alarmingly soon," she says. She pulled out her camera and filmed everything she could, interacting with the local Inuit community, who live in harmony with their surroundings but are the first to bear the brunt of the climate crisis. That's how her documentary film, 400 PPM, came to be – with appearances by Canadian author Margaret Atwood, astronaut Chris Hadfield and the famed explorer Wade Davis. The title was a nod to historic levels of greenhouses gases in the atmosphere, noted by a Hawaiian observatory in 2015-16. Now 23, Maya already has a glowing record in scientific research already under her belt. Apart from making an acclaimed documentary, she is a two-time winner of the Canada-Wide Science Fair and has done cutting edge research at Harvard University, the University of Toronto as well as at the Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory, where she worked with the CHIME experiment.

Never too young

Maya's interest in science began as early as five or six years of age. Born to engineer parents, with grandparents who were medical professionals, an interest in scientific thought was alive at home, and Maya's curiosity was always encouraged. At 10, she built a microbiology lab in her basement in Canada to experiment on the effects of turmeric and neem on harmful pathogens. "My mother and grandmother had always told me that the herbs and spices we use in Indian food do more than just make it taste good, they have certain healing properties. At the time, Western Science hadn't caught on to this at all," she tells Global Indian.

Brimming with curiosity, Maya wanted to test the hypothesis. But in 2010, things like petri dishes weren't available to the public. After “cold emailing university professors” and getting no response, she received help from a high school science teacher. She created an incubator for the bacteria using an electric heating blanket which she placed inside a soda cooler. Her takeaway was twofold: First, turmeric "was incredibly effective at killing the bacteria." Second, "it was a lesson in resourcefulness and perseverance."

Forays into theoretical physics

At 13, she taught herself calculus. "I was just starting high school then and had heard a lot about Calculus.” Differential calculus is typically taught at the twelfth-grade level in Canada but “those were the early days of the Khan Academy.". "They had posted videos and I taught myself, as a ninth grader. The relationship between Mathematics and Physics was of special interest to me. I really enjoyed Physics - it teaches you how to model the whole world. And it all involves Calculus."

 In her early teens, she began her journey into theoretical physics, asking "the kind of questions that only a super naive kid would ask," as she puts it, very modestly. "What happens if you keep taking more derivatives of acceleration? What happens with more integrals of distance?” At the University of Toronto, she worked to build a device that could measure the integrals of distance. "We were the first to build something like that, as far as I know," Maya says. As much as she enjoyed her foray into theoretical physics, her concern for humanity’s problems led her down a more applied path.

The Canada-Wide Science Fair 

As she watched her grandfather’s condition deteriorate from Alzheimer's, a distraught young Maya wondered what she could do to help. She tested two drugs that are commonly used in the early stages of Alzheimer's treatment on daphnia, a common species of water flea often used in experiments. "He was taking a lot of other drugs as well and I wanted to see how the cocktail was affecting his heart,” she explains. “I noticed the drugs regularised heart rate, whether it was high or low. I never followed it up in a more rigorous setting but it certainly was fascinating."  The experiment got her top place at the Canada-wide Science Fair, an event she took pains to attend every year –"It was one week of the year where I could be around people my age who were also interested in science," she says. "It was incredible to have won there, twice."

The CHIME experiment, superconductors and cosmology 

Rather unsurprisingly, Harvard University welcomed Maya. She deferred acceptance for a year, however, to work instead at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in Waterloo, where she did research for CHIME, a novel radio telescope that has no moving parts, originally meant to detect fast radio bursts. "I had a truly amazing mentor and I went back during my first summer break in college as well," says Maya. She worked on algorithms for blind pulsar searches, to detect pulsars that are orders of magnitude fainter than normal.

She also worked with Subir Sachdev, a world-renowned condensed matter theorist, working on machine learning techniques that could efficiently determine whether or not a potential material is a superconductor, or if it has other exotic properties of interest. "Typically, it takes years to come up with a mathematical solution but we can run a simulation and determine very quickly if the material is interesting." Her interest in machine learning also came in later at Harvard, as she worked with Professor Cynthia Dwork, a theoretical cosmologist at the university's Physics Department. "We wanted to create an algorithm for eliminating algorithmic bias," she says.

On ethics and economics: The Rhodes Scholarship  

A chance economics class at Harvard, taught by Nobel-Prize winning economist Amartya Sen, opened Maya's eyes to a whole new world. It was an abstract class but she was taken by the "approach of economists in terms of thinking about the world.” “It piqued my interest and led me to a master's in economics." It ties in well with her own work on the climate crisis. "What are economic implications of climate policy? How do we initiate the clean energy transition and do it in a way that's equitable for everyone in the world? There's so much work to be done and I love to learn," she smiles. The Rhodes Scholar also toyed with the idea of a programme in the philosophy of physics at Oxford University before settling on a master's in Economics instead.

Maya also did a stint with an early-stage VC fund, an experience she thoroughly enjoyed. It gave her the opportunity, she says, to think critically and to "think differently from people more senior to me in the organisation." Venture capital tends to function within conventional patterns, something Maya would like to see change. "For instance, there haven't been a lot of women in top roles in the US historically. I think private venture capital can play a role in that, in not reinforcing existing biases."

As co-founder of Adventus Robotics, she is also working on developing a self-driving wheelchair, which doesn't use a conventional joystick interface that is inaccessible to those with arthritis or age-related tremors. "There is a lot of work in terms of cutting-edge sensors and computation, but the thing with cutting edge is that it's expensive," she says. "If we want to help the average person, we need off-the-shelf, low-cost sensors and the ability to combine those with cutting edge algorithms," she says. It's a project she began before Harvard and continues to work on. "We're working with leading hospitals, airports and airlines to roll it out," she says. For this, she was the winner of the 2020 Harvard i3 Innovation Challenge and the Lemelson-MIT Student Prize.

What lies ahead

Reflecting on her journey so far,  she says she hasn't followed a certain path. "A lot of it was about me being in a particular place at a particular time," she says. "Each experience has enabled me to make a contribution. But the one thing that has always persisted through my life is my curiosity. I have always been curious, I want to learn new things, I love talking to people and asking them questions. Everyone has something interesting to say, everyone is an expert at something and I love the game of finding out." It's the idea of what she calls thoughtful leadership that truly compels her. "Regardless of what I specifically end up doing, I hope to be in a position where I can provide that," she says.
