UK’s Youngest Chess Grandmaster: How Shreyas Royal is changing the game

(November 16, 2024) In the hushed halls of the Bavarian Open in 2022, fourteen-year-old Shreyas Royal was about to make history. Across nine games, he played with the skill of a seasoned grandmaster, carefully outsmarting his opponents and securing seven points. This wasn’t just any win—he became the youngest player in the United Kingdom to reach a grandmaster-level performance. For Britain, a country with a deep chess tradition and competitive scene, seeing such young talent was rare. By the end of the tournament, Shreyas Royal’s name wasn’t just another entry; it was the headline, marking the arrival of a fresh new talent.

Bengaluru to London: A Journey Begins

Yet Shreyas’ journey to the chessboard was far from ordinary. Born in Bengaluru in 2009, he moved to the United Kingdom with his family at the age of three when his father, Jitendra Singh, accepted a job as an IT project manager. They settled in South-East London, in the lively, multicultural neighbourhood of Woolwich. Shreyas was still a toddler, curious about the world around him, and showed an impressive memory.

It was here, thousands of miles from India – the birthplace of chess- that his father introduced him to the game as a way to channel his young son’s sharp mind. “It took me some time, but I was curious,” Shreyas recalls, describing those first tentative steps. It wasn’t until he started winning matches against other children at school that something inside him clicked. “And that got me hooked.”

Discovering Chess

By six, his parents had signed him up at a local chess club in East Ham, where he trained under the guidance of a private coach. From then, chess became more than a hobby — it was the beginning of his journey into competitive arenas across Europe. His first taste of international success came in Greece, where he clinched silver at the European Schools Chess Championship. His skill and tenacity set him apart early on, winning him multiple awards, and soon, the young player from Woolwich was recognised as one of the country’s brightest prospects. Chris Ward, a British chess grandmaster, went as far as to say Shreyas was “the best prospect the country has ever seen.”

The Biggest Challenge

But for all his success, life in the UK presented its own set of challenges. In 2018, the family faced the prospect of returning to India as his father’s work visa neared expiration. The requirement? An income of £120,000 a year — far beyond his father’s reach. For a brief period, it seemed that Shreyas’s chess journey might be cut short. However, the English Chess Federation, along with supporters in the political community, appealed to then-Home Secretary Sajid Javid, citing Shreyas’s potential as an exceptional talent. Javid himself acknowledged, “The UK is a country that fosters world-class talent, and Shreyas is one of the most gifted chess players in his generation.”

This was a turning point. The visa extension not only allowed Shreyas Royal to continue his journey but freed his family from an uncertain future, giving him the stability he needed to continue on his chess journey.

The Mind of a Chess Prodigy: Strategy and Preparation

From that point, Shreyas intensified his focus, opting for homeschooling to accommodate his training and tournament schedules. His strategy preparation became more methodical, studying opponents’ strengths, weaknesses, and past games. “I check to see what openings he has struggled against in the past and also look at some of his statistics, how well he has fared against weaker opponents,” Shreyas explained. “Aiming for any type of an advantage with white and equality with black out of the opening are also very vital goals.” The discipline, patience, and hours of practice were part of the foundation that helped him succeed at the Bavarian Open and beyond.

Shreyas’s story is closely tied to the Indian community in the UK—a group that has maintained its cultural roots while contributing to many areas of British society. This community has played an important role in enriching the UK’s cultural and professional landscape. Shreyas represents this blend of Indian heritage and British identity, bringing pride to both. As the child of Indian immigrants, he comes from a tradition that values hard work, education, and resilience—qualities that clearly influence his approach to chess and life.

A Love for the Game Beyond Titles

Shreyas is now focused on achieving new goals. He dreams of becoming one of the world’s top 10 players and hopes to win the world championship by the time he’s 21. However, his passion for chess isn’t just about the titles. “For me, it’s not so much about the money,” he said. “It’s about having fun playing chess. I just enjoy it,” said the Global Indian. This genuine love for the game keeps him coming back to the chessboard every single day.

Looking ahead, Shreyas understands there’s still a lot to learn. “It is a very fascinating game in which I feel I have a lot more to learn,” he says, reflecting his humility despite his achievements. For now, the young grandmaster-in-the-making stays focused on training and competing, fueled by the same curiosity that first drew him to the game.

The disconnect began for him as early as third grade, when he couldn't wrap his head around long division, and didn't understand why something that could be solved with a calculator was used as a means to assess a child in school. "When calculators became mainstream in schools, the educators, the education department and the government started banning it. There was a significant level of confusion with calculators, but ultimately, they realised that calculators are an amazing tool, and won't replace mathematicians or quantum," he says, adding that now ChatGPT has caused a similar confusion years later. With the buzz around ChatGPT taking over assignments and jobs, reams of print are being written on the general-purpose chatbot that creates AI-generated content.

"We need to move towards assessment based on problem solving and human skills. If people are worried about kids doing their assignments on ChatGPT, it's probably not a very good assignment to begin with. ChatGPT cannot do an assignment that can assess human skills. Humans should be competing against machines on human skills, because machines will never be able to demonstrate human skills. No matter how advanced a machine or AI technology may develop, it's a skill that machine will never be able to demonstrate," says Taj, at a time when ChatGPT has reached 100 million users within two months of its launch.

The 23-year-old calls ChatGPT an "incredible tool", and believes that "instead of banning or frowning upon systems like this, we should be urging young people to be taking up these platforms." The entrepreneur explains, "During school, teach them appropriate usage of techniques, teach about responsible AI techniques to make sure they know how to make the most of it. Going back to the basics of the future of any work, we know that any task or job that can be simplified down to a series of sequential and logical steps can and will be automated by AI. Government and educators are afraid of young people using ChatGPT. However, the assessments they are giving younger people are not in alignment with the needs of the real world."

Taj, who was awarded Young Australian of the Year for Queensland in 2017, believes that real-world skills are should be the focus of the education system. "If we are looking at skills of the future then rather than trying to compete with the machines on the skills that machines can probably do better, such as knowledge-based tasks, let's compete on human skills," the entrepreneur adds.

Disengagement led to purpose

Born in London in 1999 to Indian mother who was brought up in the UK and a father who has many generations living in Kenya, Taj moved to Australia at the age of one as "Kenya wasn't one of the safest places to raise a child due to increasing crime rate."

Growing up in Queensland, Taj had a hard time getting accustomed to the conventional way of education where he saw every other child "doing really well" in academics. Being the only person who wasn't keeping up with his classmates was "an isolating experience" that continued throughout primary school. "I couldn't connect the dots between the things that teachers were teaching me in school and the things I really needed to succeed in the real world. The mix of these two problems led to my disengagement from mainstream education." The disengagement led to many detentions and suspensions throughout the school, making his parents furious. But those days made him realise his interest and passion for technology. "I loved pulling off electronics and exploring the insides of the softwares. I realised that technology was the path that I would want to pursue when I grow up."

As young as nine, Taj began his first "informal business" - a tech blog - where he was reviewing electronics, and that's when he realised that tech is something beyond a hobby for him. Amid the "boring" school classes, he had found something that made sense to him. Being a child of the tech era, he couldn't fathom the need to learn long division in school, when calculators could easily do the job. "I couldn't understand why you would assess a child, in an examination setting, on his ability to demonstrate long division. In the work space, they will have access to a calculator. The purpose of the school is to prepare young people for the future of work, and if we know that the future of the work involves calculators and AI systems, we should be adjusting our assessments in school to assess tasks that are in line with the needs of employers."

First brush with entrepreneurship

As a teenager, he was keen to grasp skills that would help him thrive in the real world, and that pushed him on the path of self-learning. At 14, he started 56 Creations, to teach young people digital literacy. "We started by developing a DIY tablet for kids, by kids. Its tagline was the Lego of 21st century. I wanted one while growing up, and that's why we started the business." After two years of successfully running the business with the tablet model, they switched to running workshops for young kids with regard to STEM skills and digital literacy, and reached out to over 50,000 people across the planet.

His first real business gave him confidence, making him believe that he was a kid with a career, and grades wasn't the only criteria to assess a child's ability. "It was actually my first taste of what a career in business would actually look like."

Helping build business

After running 56 Creations for seven years, Taj wanted "a bit of change." "While I liked tech, I realised my passion was actually the business and entrepreneurial side. I thought, let's teach kids how to build businesses, and find kids who were in similar positions as me while growing up - some who were disengaged and some from disadvantaged backgrounds as well." This gave birth to Australian School of Entrepreneurship in 2020.

With the world facing a global crisis in the form of Covid-19, it was a difficult year to start a business. "However, we realised that some of the biggest businesses like Instagram and WhatsApp came from global crisis, when youth unemployment was on the rise. We thought we could actually use self-employment to solve some of the biggest problems. We worked with a group of disengaged kids who were learning new skills by the end of the program, and also making money. We realised that self-employment and entrepreneurship can solve youth unemployment."

The ASE Group has two initiatives - Australian School of Entrepreneurship that works with young people, and Australian School of Employment that works with adults. While the former provides entrepreneurship training and life skill programs through workshops and online education, the latter provides self-employment programs to help Australians contribute to their local communities through micro-businesses. "Collectively, we have worked with 180,000 people across the planet. We do a lot with online education and that's how we are able to reach people internationally. More than 1.5 million Australian dollar of income has been generated by our alumni," says the proud entrepreneur.

Much of Taj’s learning was done on the go, and it was challenging to start with almost "no worldly wisdom and no life experience" because he would make "significantly more mistakes than the average business owner." Moreover, he had to learn to manage stress and his wellbeing. "I had to put together strategies which were beneficial and helped me get through extended period. Entrepreneurship is a tough spot," he says.

Having already reached 180,000 people in the last three years, the entrepreneur is keen to expand the impact to a million people by 2030. "That's lifting a significant number of people out of the poverty trap, out of youth unemployment trap. And instead of applying for work, start your own business. Create your own future is essentially the vision."

Joy Agrawal: The teen changemaker making an impact through Stem education

(May 13, 2022) Sitting for the Homi Bhaba exam in 2019, Nagpur-based Stem lover Joy Agrawal had an epiphany - the underprivileged students have no access to practical labs. This thought gnawed at him for weeks. The then 13-year-old understood his privilege of having access to all the resources, while the disadvantaged had no money to even order science kits. He knew he had to find a solution, and this gave birth to Project Gyan in 2020. "It's an effort to help quality Stem education reach the young minds through practical and application-based education, focusing on the underprivileged children," changemaker Joy tells Global Indian. In two years, what started as a classroom of 10-12 students has now reached over 1600 students across five schools in Nagpur, Maharashtra. "Practical exposure is necessary to get children thrilled about education. When we started, many students wanted to help their daily wager worker parents with their chores but in a few months, some wanted to build airplanes. Love for space tech

Born in 2006 in Bareilly to financial consultant parents, Joy was raised in Nagpur. A space tech enthusiast, the outer world always fascinated this teenager. But his interest was piqued after his parents gifted him a telescope at the age of 10. "For a year, I'd sit every day gazing at the stars or looking at the asteroids. But with time, it became less frequent. However, lockdown changed it as the sky was clear again," says the Centre Point School student who discovered two asteroids in 2021 as a part of Spaceport India Asteroid Search Campaign in association with Hardin-Simmons University Texas.

His discoveries have been designated as 2020 RD95 and 2020 RJ83, says the 15-year-old who adds that NASA will use the data for a year or two to confirm the provisional discoveries after an in-depth study. "I am obsessed with space and technology," reveals Joy who loves doing everything in the area of space tech. While the telescope turned out to be a gamechanger for this teenager in the world of space, it was a robotics course that made him fall in love with technology. "As a kid, I loved swimming and would spend two hours every day in the pool. But it was put on hold for a while as the pool was under renovation. It turned out to be a blessing in disguise. With time on my hands, I enrolled in the robotics class, and I haven't looked back since," adds the teen changemaker, who is the founder of Community Space One. "Our mission is to achieve sustainable development goals with the help of space technology. It was in early 2021 that I identified like-minded people, and soon started Community Space One," says the boy, who is keen to make a difference through remote sensing and earth observation.

Making an impact through STEM

This love for technology led him to be selected by Peace First, the world's largest incubator for youth-led social change initiatives, for a project grant. "It's a mini-grant for projects on the lines of social change. I won $250 with which I started Project Gyan in 2020. Started during the pandemic, I initially needed no funds as I was conducting live workshops for the underprivileged kids virtually," says Joy who started with the students of St Michael's High School in Nagpur. Being the vice president of the Interact Club at his school, Joy came in touch with the Rotary club and zeroed in on an institution that has many underprivileged kids. "I began with a 1-2 hour class every Saturday wherein I performed experiments and explained concepts. Later, I expanded Project Gyan to four more schools in Nagpur and two tribal schools in Maharashtra," adds the changemaker who provides kits to schools for students to get hands-on experience in science practicals. "I love science, and I understand its potential. I want these kids to explore their potential through Project Gyan," says Joy, who is now working with a team that looks into distribution and planning, maintaining the website, social media, and creating videos.

With 1600 students now and a grant of ₹40,000 from Vicco Labs, Project Gyan is spreading its wings and has expansion plans in Central India. Things weren't smooth at the start - he found that many kids had no access to mobile phones. "Three-four students were using one phone to attend my classes initially.  This made me understand the extent of the disparity. But with passing months, I realised they too had dreams, and given the practical exposure, they can work towards following their dreams," says Joy, who plans to make the study kit available globally for anyone to access.

Future plans

Joy, who is currently sitting for his board exams, has plans of pursuing a bachelor's degree in computer science from MIT or Harvard and a master's in space system engineering. "Working with the UN is my dream. But at some stage, I would want to launch my start-up in space tech," says the teenager, who calls himself a "changemaker who wants to create an impact through Stem".

At 15, Joy is busy creating social impact, and the teenager advises youngsters to "not follow the herd. Instead, explore your niche. Don't replicate another person's journey. Do your thing and only then you will be able to make a difference." The teen changemaker, who firmly believes that sky is the limit, loves reading books, playing with his dog, and listening to music in his free time. "I don't need to unwind as I love every bit of what I do. When you enjoy your work, you never need a moment to take a break from it," concludes Joy.

Maanasa Mendu: Indian-American teen making clean affordable technology accessible

(December 20, 2022) "Imagine a place where life ends after dark, where there are no electric lights for school work or refrigeration for perishables. This is not part of some dystopian society - it’s a part of our world today. Over 1.2 billion people lack access to electricity," is how Indian-American girl Maanasa Mendu begins her TedX talk. Born and raised in Ohio, her first brush with the global energy crisis began when she visited her grandmother in rural India for her summer break, and witnessed persistent blackouts. Seeing children huddled over a single kerosene lamp, something shifted in the then teenager who was keen to make a difference. That's when she designed Harvest - an energy harvesting device that combines piezoelectric effect that harvests energy from sun, wind and precipitation. It not only won her the grand prize in the Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge and $25,000, but also made her the youngest person to make it to the 2017 Forbes 30 Under 30 list at just 14 years of age. That visit to India left her searching for answers. Upon her return, she began digging deep into information and found that 88 percent of the energy supply comes from non-renewable sources, which are not only harmful to the environment but also depleting. A renewable source was the answer but not many opted for it owing to its high cost. That's when Maanasa took it upon herself to design an "inexpensive and potentially globally application energy solution."

At age 11, she discovered piezoelectric effect (the ability of certain materials to produce an electrical charge when applied with mechanical stress) while reading about JRE's railway station in Japan that has piezo electric floors that produce electricity from people's footsteps. She knew she had found the perfect renewable energy solution. After a year of research and reading, the inspiration for piezoelectric "leaf" device struck here while watching tree branches sway in the wind during a storm. To her, the branches looked like piezoelectric materials - tiny devices that generate power through vibration. She soon began to imagine a renewable energy technology that could harness the energy in the wind and rain. This motivated her to work on her first design. While the initial idea was to focus only on wind power, she ultimately built a prototype that can harness solar and wind energy and the vibrations of rain drops. The device consists of three solar "leaves" that act as solar panels but also move and bend with the wind and rain. The design won her the Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge, which the Global Indian built using recycled materials for only $5.

"The issue with the energy crisis lies not in the fact that we lack ideas or solutions to solve it, but rather in the fact that we are unable to get these solutions to the people who need it the most," said Maanasa.

When she began working on the design, her focus was only on wind energy as she wanted to solve the problem of how to capture wind in urban areas where wind turbines don't make sense. But while working on it, she realised "there are a lot more untapped energy sources in our environment, like solar power and precipitation." "If my device just relies on one specific environmental condition, the power output can vary throughout the day. Whereas if it relies on multiple environmental conditions–like sunlight intensity, wind speed, precipitation–all of these factors could create a more stable power source with a higher power output,” she told Fast Company.

Maanasa, who is studying at Harvard University, reveals that Harvest can power a 15watt LED bulb after three hours of charging. It took her three years to come up with Harvest, that has the potential to be the answer to the global energy crisis, and she says that it was curiosity that led her to the solution. She believes that "student inventors try to seek inspiration from everyday things. I feel like they connect the dots better."

Sports, Science and Empathy: Rakshith Srinivasan unleashes ‘Unlimited Potential’

(July 30, 2023) Over one-third of children and adolescents with disabilities have little or no accessibility to sports and physical education, according to a UNICEF study, although the majority have them access to medical, transportation and cultural services. In 2021, a report by the American College of Sports Medicine showed that physical activity among children with disabilities is four-times lower than their non-disabled counterparts. It is a gap that Indian-origin teen Rakshith Srinivasan hopes to fill by creating an enabling ecosystem through research and innovation, to increase access and make people aware of the role sports medicine can play in bettering the lives of children with disabilities. The change maker envisions an inclusive world where children facing physical challenges have the necessary tools to overcome them and can actively participate in school sports. His focus is also on adults who can lead a more fulfilling life with sports despite their disabilities. “We believe that accelerating research and improving affordability will ultimately lead to fulfilling our vision of a world without wheelchairs by 2050," remarks Rakshith.  

The multifaceted teen has also published a book titled ‘Overcoming Obstacles’ and has secured first place in Washington State Science and Engineering Fair 2023. 

Passionate about making a difference 

UP operates as a network of passionate high school students who are actively involved in sports and have a strong interest in science and research. These student volunteers collaborate with doctors and medical researchers from institutions like Seattle Children’s Orthopaedic Research Lab, Fred Hutch Cancer Center, Special Olympics of Washington, and the University of Washington’s Institute of Sports Medicine.  

Through these partnerships, the volunteers gain insights into the research, understand its impact, and spread awareness about the gained information, raising funds in the process. 

With a team of ten dedicated full-time volunteers and over 600 part-time volunteers spanning United States, Rakshith’s non-profit has achieved a remarkable feat. Since its inception in 2021, UP's campaigns have been instrumental in raising $100,000 for research through generous contributions from community donors whom the volunteers approached within their respective school districts.

The raised amount is enabling the funding of eight research programs in crucial areas such as prosthetics, bionics, muscular dystrophy, skeletal dysplasia, limb deformities, bone cancer, athlete mental health, and human-centred design. 

Bringing community together

Team Unlimited Potential has not only garnered support from more than 500 donors but has also formed a dedicated advisory board comprising like-minded leaders with experience in the field of sports medicine.  

The experts provide valuable mentorship to the volunteers. The advisory team assists in research selection, engages in donor discussions, plans fundraising campaigns, and facilitates connections with researchers and doctors. 

It started when… 

Rakhshith has always been interested in medicine, biology and sports. Three years ago, he suffered a grade 2 ankle sprain. “It was the varsity basketball season, and the sprain took me out of the playoffs. I really missed the time I was away from the team. I was frustrated for being away from sports – which is something what I love to do,” he said adding, “It was an eye-opening experience for me. It led me to think about how a lot of children might be missing sports due to their permanent disabilities.  

Recognising that sports is one of the biggest unifiers and hobbies of everyone around the world, the youngster devoted his recuperation time in learning about sports medicine. He did extensive research on what's being done in the field to help the people who cannot play sports due to their disabilities or deformities and made up his mind to do his own bit. 

Empathy for social change 

Rakshith’s dedication not just comes from personal experience of being confined but also from empathy that he developed during a volunteering activity. As a ninth-grade student, he had volunteered to tutor the displaced children of refugees from Afghanistan and Ukraine - an initiative of the non-profit, World Relief . Getting involved in the initiative changed his whole perspective of how he looked at life.

“The kids in the refugee base here were in an awkward situation, where they were attending school in a very different education system without even knowing the language properly,” he said. 

 “Apart from tutoring, just being with them, showing support and talking to them during their hard times gave me a sort of empathy towards others and helped me introspect how I’m fortunate enough but there are lots of people who are not, and I should use what I have been given to help others,” he remarked. 

 Overcoming obstacles 

“While fund raising, we hear more ‘No’s’ than ‘Yeses’ says the youngster, but we keep going.’ Wearing many hats, the teen is not just passionate about sports medicine research and creating STEM awareness but is also an author and basketball enthusiast. His debut book ‘Overcoming Obstacles,’ delves into the cutting-edge research taking place in the field of sports science and research. “All proceeds from book sales would be directed towards the fundraising campaigns conducted by Unlimited Potential,” he says. 

Aspiring to be an orthopaedic doctor, the teen has published scientific research papers about muscle soreness and lateral ligament ankle injuries in basketball. He has worked for several medical internships and plays varsity basketball at district level.  

In March this year, he was thrilled to win the first prize in the 66th Washington State Science and Engineering Fair. “I was judged 1st amongst highly amazingly talented Washingtonians who participated in the state science fair. My research was about leveraging BC Amino acids compounds to increase energy in muscles lower micro-raptures thus preventing injuries in elite athletes,” he shared.

As part of LEAP (Leadership through Education, Activities, and Personal Development), a student leadership group of the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA), he is involved with WIAA events, meetings and community projects, and gets opportunity to be the voice of Washington’s more than 225,000 student-participants. 

Born in India Rakshith is thankful for his parents' support in all his endeavours and is very close to his grandparents who live in India. “I feel that everyone has potential inside them, and I want to unlock that potential through my initiatives,” he says.

Gen Z Election Candidate: Ashwin Ramaswami is the youngest, and first Indian American to run for Georgia State Senate

(February 29, 2024) At the age of 24, Ashwin Ramaswami has already amassed an impressive array of accomplishments. As a leader who represents America’s diversity well, Ashwin is the first Indian American in Georgia's State Senate, the first Gen Z member, and the only State Senator with degrees in both computer science and law. Infusing Gen Z enthusiasm for transformation

With great interest in volunteerism, Ashwin Ramaswami has worked to make positive change by working in nonprofits, religious communities, technology startups, and law and policy in the past. Thanking people of his hometown Georgia who helped in his gaining of experiences in diverse fields, the political aspirant remarked, “It's time for me to pay it forward and help advocate for the futures of young people — and everyone — in our community."

The Gen Z contestant is articulate on social media and even interacts with the followers “I am running in the Democratic Party, against an incumbent who got indicted for trying to overturn the 2020 election results,” he remarked, replying to one of the queries on social media. “It is important to have people with integrity in the public office and who serve the community first,” he added.

Interspersing technology with purpose 

In 2017, Ashwin tried his hand at entrepreneurship and entered the tech startup sector focussing on healthcare regulation. Since then, he has offered consultancy and engineering support to various technology startups, and people engaged in technology entrepreneurship and investment activities.

He has also worked in the firm, Schmidt Futures. During his time there, Ashwin spearheaded the creation of $6 million worth of philanthropic  initiatives aimed at bolstering and raising awareness for open-source software communities, which serve as vital resources for small businesses. His research efforts had played a role in inspiring a bill in Congress: H.R.3286, securing Open Source Software Act.

Additionally, Ashwin had been involved in advocacy within the free culture and open access movement, contributing his expertise to organisations such as the Wikimedia Foundation and the Linux Foundation.

Ensuring cybersecurity in elections

In 2020, while working at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), Ashwin had established a cybersecurity programme for state and local election officials, supporting election security efforts for both the 2020 and 2022 elections. As part of his job, he collaborated with various states across the country, including the office of the GA Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, to identify and address election security issues. 

In 2023, he served as a fellow in the Georgia Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division, contributing to efforts aimed at safeguarding Georgians' online and social media experiences.

Connected to his roots

Ashwin was born and raised in Johns Creek, Georgia. “I'm a second-generation immigrant, an Indian American, a twin brother, and an engineer,” he writes on his website. 

I would be the first Hindu and Indian lawmaker in the state of Georgia and am committed to leading with inclusion and truth.

In his dedication towards the South Asian community, Ashwin had initiated teaching sessions at Chinmaya Mission, educating middle and high school students on Hindu philosophy and culture, which encompassed teachings from the Bhagavad Gita. Additionally, during his student days at Georgetown, he established the Dharmic Law Student Organisation to cater to Buddhist, Hindu, Sikh, and Jain students, and played a key role in raising $100,000 to establish an endowment fund.

Deeply attached with Georgia’s concerns

While being connected to his roots, Ashwin is immensely attached to the place where he was born and raised, "I am from Johns Creek, GA and the only candidate who grew up in this district,” he adds. “Everyone should make sure they have access to a quality education. We want to make sure people have access to jobs and the economy, entrepreneurship and also access to healthcare, reproductive rights and all these issues that matter to us. That's why I've been running,” the young leader has shared in his election campaigns.
