Shivam Shankar Singh: Behind the scenes of the great Indian political theatre

(April 29, 2022) In April 2011, anti-corruption activist Anna Hazare began his famous hunger strike at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi. The movement spread and a series of protests erupted across the country, with Time magazine naming it one of the Top 10 News Stories of 2011. Shivam Shankar Singh, who was setting off to the University of Michigan at the time, found the protests evoked a sense of urgency in him. So, when Prashant Kishor founded Citizens for Accountable Governance in 2013, data analyst Shivam dove headlong into a political career. Today, at the age of 29, he is not just a political consultant of repute, he is also the author of two books – How to Win an Indian Election (2019) and The Art of Conjuring Alternate Realities, which hit bookstores in 2021. In July, he will head off to Tsinghua University in Beijing’s Forbidden City, as a Schwarzman Scholar for 2022.  

Deep dive into politics

In 2013, Prashant Kishor launched the Citizens for Accountable Governance (CAG, later IPAC), a “turning point in Indian politics”, says Shivam, adding, “For the first time, there was room for professionals in the political space. Until that point, joining politics meant working your way up as a karyakarta.” He seized the opportunity, volunteering with CAG’s projects even though he was in the US at the time.

When he returned in 2015, his LAMP fellowship sent him right back into the heart of Delhi politics. “I knew I wanted to be in politics and the policy space, and it seemed like the best opportunity,” he says. One of the most prestigious fellowships, LAMP fellows shadow a member of parliament for a year, starting from the monsoon session, till the end of the budget session. Assigned to the office of PD Rai, Lok Sabha MP from Sikkim, Shivam had an insider’s view, familiarising himself with grassroots politics in the north-east.

It was a defining experience and Shivam recalls working with the likes of Shashi Tharoor, Rajiv Pratap Rudy, Dinesh Trivedi and Meenakshi Lekhi. “We became familiar with their life stories, their rise as politicians,” he explains.

The parliamentary questions expose

Preparing parliamentary questions was an important part of the job. Shivam was puzzled to discover that some MPs seem to have their questions selected more than others. Each member of parliament can submit up to 10 questions each day, out of which five are picked for answering on the floor of the house. Although this is decided in a ballot process, something seemed awry.

“Some MPs get most of their questions selected, while others get less than a third,” Shivam explains. “There were three of us in Rai’s office, two former LAMP fellows. We pulled the data and realised that the system had been completely rigged,” he says.

 The expose went viral, receiving attention from the upper echelons of government and even resulting in a policy change. “The rigging happened across party lines but most of them were from Maharashtra,” Shivam laughs. “Today, I’m on great terms with a lot of them but at that point, they were pretty angry with me!,” he adds.

Rebranding Captain Amarinder Singh

When the LAMP fellowship ended in 2015, Shivam returned to Kishor’s I-PAC the following year. “I had a base in data analytics by then,” he says. His return was during the run-up to the 2017 Punjab legislative assembly election and leading the charge for the Congress was Amarinder Singh. The Congress had hired Prashant Kishor for the campaign, and Shivam was soon on ground in rural Punjab.

“I was involved with the rebranding of Amarinder Singh. He was seen back then as unapproachable, as royalty and not a man of the people,” Shivam explains. The first change Kishor, Shivam and the team made was to bring back Singh’s army title – Captain. “Being in the army comes with a certain connotation – the general perception is of a man of action, who stands by his countrymen,” he remarks. A massive media campaign followed, along with Amarinder making an election promise to visit every constituency. “He had never actually done this before,” Shivam adds. “He didn’t make it to all but he went to many.”

The campaign also used technology in a way that hadn’t been done before in a state election, although Narendra Modi had set a precedent during his prime ministerial campaign in 2014. “We wanted everyone to know that the Captain had been to their constituency.”

Entry and exit from the saffron party

The IPAC stint lasted five months, after which Shivam officially joined the data analytics wing of the BJP. Again, his arrival was timely – just ahead of assembly elections in Manipur (2017) and Tripura (2018). His was assigned with formulating election strategies and targetting voter groups through social media.

In June 2018, Shivam made a rather public exit from the BJP’s fold, with a post on social media titled, ‘Why I am resigning from BJP’. It went viral. “By that time it had become obvious that the campaign was mostly about religious discourse. It was a very different type of political messaging from 2014, when economic development was the focus. I knew I had to leave,” he adds.

By this time, Shivam already had a reputation as a data analyst and political expert. Now he found himself showered with media attention.

It had its appeal – “you’re automatically seen as an achiever, just because you have been on television,” he says. Even so, he found that fame for fame’s sake just wasn’t what he wanted from life. “If it doesn’t align with what you’re actually trying to do, then it’s of no use. I’m sure there are different ways of looking at it but this is mine,” he adds.

‘Booked’ by Penguin Random House

Later that year, Penguin Random House made him an offer. “Prashant Kishor had signed a book deal but never got around to actually writing it. Penguin was looking for someone to talk about what a political consultant does. So they reached out to me after the Tripura election,” he reveals. Writing a book appeared to be quite a challenge but he began anyway. How to Win an Indian Election hit the stands in 2019 and was an instant bestseller. “Luck has its role to play,” Shivam grins. There is a glut of books on politics, “written by people who have a lot more media support. Since my book came just before the Tripura election, timing had a big role to play in its success.”

What does a political consultant do, then? “Usually, we’re standing around wondering how to stick posters to walls or figuring out how everything sounds through the speakers,” he laughs. “People imagine us sitting around tables and chalking up strategies. This happens, yes but it’s only a small part of the process.”

Infowars and the art of conjuring realities

After his exit from the political fray, Shivam joined a data analytics firm that worked on the national elections. “There was a lot of talk on how data influences politics. Then I met Anand Venkatanarayanan,” he says adding, “At the time, he was testifying as an expert witness in the Pegasus case.” Venkatanarayanan is a cyber security and privacy researcher who broke the story of the hack of Kundunkulam nuclear reactor by the North Koreans. He was also called as an expert witness before the Supreme Court of India in the Aadhar case. Shivam and Anand are co-authors of The Art of Conjuring Alternate Realities. Shivam’s second offering as a writer, the book was released in 2021.

“It began with a simple enough theory,” Shivam explains. “Human power was once decided by physical strength and the size of the tribe. Then, money became the center of power – colonial powers didn’t have large armies but they had more money than the nations they conquered. Now, that power is shifting to information and our ability to control it. If I can shape the information you see, I can shape your perception.”

Beijing-bound

He intends for this to be his line of work after he returns from Beijing. “Political parties are now doing at the local level, what intelligence agencies once did across nations, to shape optics,” Shivam explains. “We have a low resilience population with the potential for many cultural fractures. How will these issues be weaponised,” he asks. “How will the information warfare play out? How do we educate people about it?”

From LSR to Project MicDrop

Born and brought up in Delhi, social activist Devanshi did her schooling in DPS, Vasant Kunj and went on to study at Lady Shri Ram College for Women, University of Delhi where she pursued a degree in BA (hons) political science (2021). Currently pursuing a one-year postgraduate diploma in conflict transformation and peacebuilding at LSR, Devanshi is determined. Her mother, a government school teacher and father, a second-generation police officer nurtured in her, a deep belief in social upliftment. “Public service was a part of my upbringing. However, the realisation of the daily traumas experienced by us (women) hit me somewhere around my first year in college. I realised how this violence is systematic, persistent, pervasive and entrenched deep within the psyche of patriarchal Indian society. This is something I could identify with, despite being privileged, so just think about the struggles of women and gender minorities from historically underrepresented and marginalised groups. This thought made me take up this cause,” shares the girl who loves cats, and feeds two strays daily.

Committed to addressing these lacunas, Devanshi went on to start Project MicDrop with her friends. “My friends Gayatri Ahuja, a current Young India Fellow and Diya Joseph, a JMC political science graduate and I wanted to catalyse individual awareness and collective action to respond to the crises during lockdowns. Project MicDrop aims to be an inclusive, intersectional initiative for discussions of feminism, gender, sex and sexuality. It acts as a catalyst and facilitator towards enabling women, trans and non-binary people to exert agency, freely express and take pride in their identities, and work to challenge prevalent societal norms by creating spaces for feminist discourse,” she tells Global Indian.

 When statistics alarmed her

While doing extensive research about the state of a girl child in rural India, Devanshi came across statistics that alarmed her. A report by India’s centre for budget and policy studies found 71 percent girls reported doing domestic chores during the pandemic, compared to 38 percent boys. Access to a phone was also 11 percent greater for boys. “Girls are facing the burden of household duties, just to sustain themselves for a meal a day. They also have to take care of children because of overcrowding in families. I studied the increase in school dropout rates. The gendered impact of the pandemic put female students at risk of early marriage, early pregnancy, poverty, trafficking and violence,” she ruminates. This led the gender activist to work with girls from marginalised communities. She also joined NGO Tamana as a teacher volunteer, as part of the national social service scheme, an Indian government sector public service programme conducted by the ministry of youth affairs and sports, for the 2018-2019 intake. “In my tenure, I taught over 1,000 students with intellectual and developmental disabilities by engaging them in interactive activities and self-researched learning modules,” she reveals.

Ladki padhao

At Ladli, the social activist aims to achieve gender equality, focusing on prioritising the concern of women’s health and well-being, especially in developing countries. It combats patriarchy, inequality, and gender-based violence. Having been part of Ladli for four years now, Devanshi’s work is focussed on three verticals: education and skill development, women’s empowerment and livelihood, and COVID-19 relief work. During the pandemic, Devanshi chose to focus on girl child education for a couple of reasons. “A girl child is more likely to drop out of school because women are viewed as a liability, not an asset. Women traditionally and even now are viewed as “paraya dhan”(other’s wealth) where the family they’re born in wouldn’t get anything out of them by investing in their education while a male child represents the continuity of lineage. Most hold such beliefs - urban, semi-urban or rural as patriarchy is deeply entrenched in Indian society,” she muses.

Breaking barriers, overcoming taboos

Given the fact that patriarchal notions are deep-seated in underprivileged situations where families struggle in a financially weak environment, it becomes difficult for children from those areas to have adequate resources to avail education. “Even if there’s the slightest chance for them to avail educational facilities, it always goes to the boys,” Devanshi mulls.

Along the course of her endeavours and studies, she has started replacing certain generic words she grew up hearing to those that aptly fit situations. “I don’t really use the term underprivileged – I’d rather use the words historically marginalised and under-represented groups. I also don’t like the term empowerment of women - the act of empowering someone is just reinforcing the saviour complex,” believes the social activist.

With her interests are centred around international development, gender and policy, Devanshi hopes to continue working, and pursue higher studies in international affairs and policy, with the intersection of gender. Binge watching on OTT, the movie buff loves watching romantic and comedy films with her mother and sister. R & B, classical and rock music are her other faves.

When not dedicating her time to social causes, the gritty 22-year-old enjoys reading political literature. “I also have a keen interest in learning about different languages and cultures. I have studied French for over nine years, and have swiftly picked up Spanish too,” she smiles.

Devanshi believes that it is important for the youth to constantly ask questions, and work towards finding solutions to causes they care about. “Amidst the pandemic, tons of youngsters started their own helplines and initiatives to help people in distress and the youth played a major role in creating change during COVID,” concludes the social activist.

(February 20, 2022) It was a fine summer evening when a 10-year-old Arijit Das and his friends came across a young man building a drone in their neighbourhood playground. The boys were fascinated. As they watched the drone soar into the sky, they were captivated. A kindly neighbour walked them through the basics, explained how he’d built the device and its components. As the young Durgapur resident headed home that evening, his thoughts were filled with the exciting possibilities technology provided. Born in Durgapur to a physiotherapist father and a homemaker mother, technology was not always on Arijit’s mind. An only child, he was quite happy-go-lucky, till one day, he chanced upon the drone. “When we approached my neighbour, he was kind enough to explain the workings and makings of a drone. It was enough to have me hooked,” says Arijit, recalling the incident from five years ago which sparked his interest in tech. “I went home and ran a google search, and began learning about tech myself,” the tech whiz tells Global Indian.

Soon, Arijit was building his first project for a state level science fair; a modified version of the LiFi concept prototype which used infrared light emitters instead of traditional light bulbs in 2018. Ever since, he has been working on various AI and IoT based projects, and speaking at conferences. In 2019, Arijit built the prosthetic limb, using arduino and micro controllers for a science fair at school. It so happened, that a few NIT-Durgapur employees happened to visit the science fair, and walked away impressed by Arijit’s project. A few weeks later, the lad’s teacher received an email from NIT, inviting Arijit and his team to the college to showcase the project. “Those were our first steps forward,” says the lad, who also showcased the project at the Institute of Engineers India, Durgapur chapter, on National Energy Conservation Day.

“We got one more special chance to present our project at an international conference WEES 2020 organised by the National Institute of Technology Durgapur and RMIT Australia. We were even invited by CSIRO Australia to write a research paper on our project which would get published in one of their energy conservation journals,” says the tech whiz. But then COVID-19 struck and the ensuing disruptions put a spanner in the works.

Not one to be discouraged, Arijit decided to participate in a competition organised by UNDP in April 2020 for designing projects for COVID-19. “I presented them with an idea for a health band that helps both patients and doctors,” says the Stem student, who won the hardware winner category prize for which he was awarded hardware worth $1,000.

Surging ahead with ideas

Some of the other projects Arijit has worked on are an anti-theft system for vehicles for the China-US Young Maker Fair, which he won. In August 2021, he developed an AI-based smart pesticide detector and farming system which went on to win the Deep Learning Superheroes Challenge by Intel. Arijit was featured across many tweets by Intel India too. Awarded the prestigious CSIR Innovation Award for School Children by the Department of Science & Technology, is another feather in this youngster’s cap .

“One of the best outcomes of these is the fact that I’ve made some great friends along the way, and have even won a lot of hackathons with them,” says the tech whiz, who received an invitation from Edge Impulse, a San Jose-based ML startup to become a part of their team in November 2021. "Later that month I officially became a part of the Edge Impulse team to develop and manage communities for EmbeddedML. Seeing my work in 2021, I was also invited by Ira Feldman, managing director of tinyML Foundation to join their team and help spread the idea and knowledge of tinyML across Asia, which led to the formation of the tinyML India chapter that presently has 700 plus members.”

Quiz the youngster on why technology fascinates him, and he says, “I believe technology can solve a lot of global issues. It can truly help society and the community with its inventions.”

With board exams looming, Arijit’s tech projects are restricted to the weekends, after his studies. This young tech enthusiast who loves subjects like physics, math, and computer science, aims to pursue a degree in engineering and hopes to one day become a computer scientist. “My parents are very supportive and whenever I am in doubt, they’re my biggest cheerleaders,” says the youngster, who loves to spend time with friends in between all his passion projects, academics and guitar lessons.

Karan Jerath: Innovator develops solution to contain oil spills at their source

(June 23, 2024) It was in the spring of 2010 that the world woke up on the morning of April 20 to an environmental disaster - the largest marine oil spill in history - the Deepwater Horizon oil spill off the coast of the United States in the Gulf of Mexico. A genius in the making

Born in Mumbai to an artist mother and a mechanical engineer father, Karan moved to Kuala Lumpur when he was one. "Living in Malaysia and attending the International School of Kuala Lumpur, I developed as a global citizen-one who recognises the necessity of harmonising opposing perspectives and becoming accustomed to a lifestyle of contrasting cultures," he revealed. It was in 2008 that the family shifted to Friendswood in Texas, US where Karan's scientific acumen started to take shape as he became involved with the school's Science Fair program. "My engagement with this program is where I first developed an interest in engineering and sustainability issues," the Global Indian wrote on his website.

Moving to the US was an intimidating experience for Karan as they didn't know anybody in this new country. But slowly he started adjusting to the new culture and environment. But it was during his high school that he started getting interested in science and curious about new things. Science fairs turned out to be the perfect platform that allowed him to continue broadening his perspective and challenging him to solve problems with no definite solutions. They empowered Karan to both serve his local community and protect the environment on an international scale.

Finding a solution

It was in 2010 that the Deepwater Horizon oil spill happened that woke him up to the environmental crisis. "I wanted to think of a solution that addresses one of the biggest ongoing crises of the environment today, oil spills, that is systematically destroying our ocean environment. I started going to libraries and reading up on this, drawing different designs and coming up with blueprints," added Karan, who later studied at the University of Texas.

With the help of his mentor, he engineered an innovative subsea wellhead containment device capable of capturing oil and gas escaping from a blowout well, separating the substances into liquids and gases, and storing them on a surface vessel. "The device is essentially a way to divert the spill from contaminating the ocean and keep it from devastating the marine life," he added.

An advocate of STEM education, he has also participated in programs such as the HIVE Global Leaders Program at Harvard, and the MIT Global Entrepreneurship Bootcamp. "Both of these programs have allowed me to continuously diversify my experiences as a growing individual, a passionate researcher, and a contributor to society."

Karan, who served as one of the United Nations Young Leaders for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), has earned many accolades in his journey which are proof that nothing is impossible where there is determination, passion, and purpose. "Through my interest in science and engineering, I realized that if you want to help change the world, it doesn’t matter how old you are, where you’re from, or how much you know. It’s my goal to empower others to be interested in science and math, to want to make a difference by discovering new things, and most importantly, to give their time and talents to a cause they care deeply about."

Karan Jerath’s innovation following the Deepwater Horizon oil spill exemplifies the transformative potential of visionary thinking in the face of environmental crises. By developing a groundbreaking device to contain oil spills at their source, Jerath not only addressed a critical challenge in oil spill management but also inspired a new generation of problem-solvers. His device, designed to capture and separate oil from the water directly at the point of leakage, represents a significant leap forward in mitigating the environmental damage caused by such disasters. His work underscores the impact that a single individual's ingenuity can have on safeguarding our planet, reinforcing the critical role of technological advancement in environmental stewardship. His legacy is a powerful reminder that with determination and innovation, even the most daunting global challenges can be met with effective and practical solutions.

(Aug 4, 2023) In the Christmas of 2021, five-year-old Moksha Roy wrote a heartfelt letter to Santa Claus, asking for two plastic-free presents so that there is less plastic pollution on the planet. “Plastics are super bad for the planet and us. Her determination has led to the integration of SDGs-related knowledge into the curriculum of British schools when she wrote to the Prime Minister of UK in 2021. She simultaneously wrote to leaders of 193 countries to make necessary policy changes to include the global SDG goals in their nations’ school curriculum. She was thrilled to receive responses from government officials, leaders, and representatives of 22 countries, including the UK, Canada, Germany, and Norway. “I felt happy to have support of so many leaders, some of whom took action to make policy changes,” she said in an interview. 

With a YouTube channel as one on her platforms, Moksha continues to raise awareness about environmental issues, including microplastic pollution, about which she aims to educate a billion children and their families through the 'Microplastic Free 2023' campaign. Accompanied by her parents, she has also worked in underprivileged schools in India to further the cause and has raised funds for World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and UNICEF UK. Apart from being the recipient of the Points of Honour award this year, the youngster received British Citizen Youth Award (BCyA) in 2022. 

Youngest sustainability advocate 

The milestones that Moksha has achieved gives her the impetus to keep moving ahead. The biggest of all milestones was when the UK Secretary for State for Education not only acknowledged her letter but also considered it as a part of the Sustainability and Climate Change Strategy for Education and Children’s Services. “We shared the first version of the strategy in 2021. We will think about your helpful idea as we continue to work on the final version,” he had replied. 

Her efforts have led to mindful practices in classrooms including her own. “My favourite part of spreading awareness is when I get to see people making changes even if they are really small ones. I like seeing many of friends giving up harmful products like glitter altogether. Instead, they are using natural materials for arts and crafts,” she remarked.

Compassionate leader 

Moksha’s compassion has extended to different domains. Her dedication to underprivileged children was evident when for her birthday gift, she requested friends and family to donate to UNICEF UK, raising £350 for the organisation. She has even motivated her friends to do the same and is happy to see that they are following her footsteps to support children in need. 

“Did you know that in an average in the UK people spend about £150 on birthday gifts for children. Imagine if only thousand people give up their birthday gifts for a charity every month, then over £2 million pounds can be raised in just one year, and together we can stop so many plastic gifts going into the landfills,” she said. 

The mindful youngster has adopted an eco-conscious lifestyle, minimising the use of plastic toys and actively recycling and donating items to less fortunate children. Gardening is her passion, as she creates a safe habitat for insects in her garden. Her compassion is not just limited to plants, insects and birds but wildlife too. 

The little warrior has fundraised for the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) to protect penguins, polar bears, snow leopards, and their habitats. 

Using creativity for change 

Moksha's creative talents shine through her talent for art and writing, which she uses as mediums to convey powerful messages about the environment. One of her works, an owl family made from recycled materials, earned her a prize in the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds' Wild Art 2021 competition.

Maanasa Mendu empowers the world: A teen’s mission for global electricity access

(December 20, 2023) She was all of 14 when Ohio-born Maanasa Mendu made it to the Forbes 30 Under 30 list, making her the youngest person ever to achieve the feat. But behind this recognition was an invention that could be a potential answer to the global energy crisis. The same innovation won her the grand prize in the Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge and $25,000. It all began when she first visited her grandparents in rural India for her summer break, and witnessed persistent blackouts. However, its high cost played a spoiler. That's when Maanasa decided to design an "inexpensive and potentially globally application energy solution."

"Imagine a place where life ends after dark, where there are no electric lights for school work or refrigeration for perishables. This is not part of some dystopian society – it’s a part of our world today. Over 1.2 billion people lack access to electricity," Maanasa said in TedX talk.

When she was 11 years old, she learned about something called the piezoelectric effect, which is when certain materials create electricity when pressure is applied. She discovered this while reading about a railway station in Japan with floors that produce electricity from people walking on them. This got her excited about finding a renewable energy solution.

After a year of researching and reading, she got the idea for a device shaped like a leaf that could harness energy from the wind and rain. The inspiration came to her while watching tree branches sway during a storm. These branches looked like piezoelectric materials to her—tiny devices that generate power through vibration. This motivated her to start working on her first design.

Initially, she wanted to focus only on using the wind for power, but she ended up creating a prototype that can harness energy from both the sun and the wind, as well as the vibrations from raindrops. Her device has three solar "leaves" that act like solar panels but also move with the wind and rain. She built the prototype using recycled materials for only $5. Her design won her the Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge.

"The issue with the energy crisis lies not in the fact that we lack ideas or solutions to solve it, but rather in the fact that we are unable to get these solutions to the people who need it the most,” said Maanasa.

When she started designing the device, she was only thinking about using the wind for energy, especially in cities where traditional wind turbines don't work well. However, as she worked on it, she realized that there are other sources of untapped energy around us, like the sun and rain. She thought, "If my device only depends on one specific thing, the amount of power it produces might change throughout the day. But if it depends on multiple things, like how sunny it is, how fast the wind is blowing, and whether it's raining, all these factors together could make a more steady source of power with more energy."

Maanasa reveals that Harvest can power a 15watt LED bulb after three hours of charging. It took her three years to come up with Harvest, that has the potential to be the answer to the global energy crisis, and she says that it was curiosity that led her to the solution. Currently studying Neuroscience and Global Health and Health Policy at Harvard College, Maanasa is an aspiring physician and public health researcher. Apart from developing a renewable energy device to address energy poverty, she is also identifying video-based biomarkers for delirium, exploring heart-brain neural circuits in zebrafish, and studying cancer incidence among people with HIV in Botswana.
