Decoding finance: How content creator Sharan Hegde is simplifying money matters for all

Compiled by: Team GI Youth

(February 23, 2024) When he first started making YouTube videos about managing one’s finances and investing money, Sharan B Hegde’s vision was to impart the knowledge he had gained over the years. Over the years, however, this 28-year-old established his name in the digital space by explaining new, complex terms such as blockchain, cryptocurrencies, NFTs, and the metaverse, the result being that he has 1.6 million followers on Instagram, 300k+ YouTube subscribers, and over 65k followers on LinkedIn.

“I never realised that my videos would become so popular, I was working as a management consultant for PWC, and during the pandemic ended up having a lot of time on my hands and that’s when I began making the content. I create engaging personal finance content with a blend of comedic flavour and cosplay on Instagram and YouTube. I also write down highly action-oriented posts on LinkedIn and Twitter for those who prefer to read it instead,” said the content creator, who recently made it to the Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia.

Not just a content creator, Sharan is also the founder of The 1% Club. “It is an exclusive members-only community to help people achieve financial independence and become the top one percent. I believe that financial independence is a superpower to never be controlled by money, and less than one percent of the people can achieve it in their lifetime. Even Kaun Banega Crorepati winners end up bankrupt. Clearly, there is a massive need for us to learn what our schools never taught us and my platform is the solution to this problem,” the Global Indian expressed.

Starting young

Born in Mangaluru to a well-off family, Sharan’s interest in personal finance and investment began from when he was just a little boy. “My mother taught me and my sister Shreya about the monthly budget of the family, and the opportunity cost of everything that was bought for the house. Whenever my dad would take me to a toy store, he used to say, ‘You can’t buy anything more than Rs 100′. They made me understand the value of money. Every time I asked for money, they made me think about whether I needed it,” the content creator shared. In fact, for birthdays and special events, Sharan received money from his grandparents, but he never used it. By the time he turned 18, the total had grown to an impressive Rs 50,000. “Money has been a very big motivator for me since childhood to be the best version of myself,” he added.

Content Creator | Sharan Hegde | Global Indian

A bright student, Sharan pursued a mechanical engineering degree from Bengaluru, and it was here that it first occurred to him that he should make a career in the finances. Shared the content creator, “I was a part of the academic club at my college, and I could manage the funds better than most of the lot. We actually saved a lot and were able to afford many equipment. Eventually, I was promoted to be the Chief Financial Officer of the club. Interestingly, managing the money and strategising how to invest or spend it wasn’t really ‘work’ for me. I thoroughly enjoyed it. So, I decided to pursue a career in that field.” Thus, the content creator started his corporate career at KPMG India as a Management Consultant.

Focussing on finance

During the pandemic, Sharan discovered that even those who didn’t lose their jobs were worried about maintaining their finances. And that gave him the thought to start his own channel to impart the knowledge he has acquired over the years. “It’s so important to learn about maintaining finances – and how to invest or spend it – it’s such an essential life skill. But when I researched, I found that the content available online back then was so dull that most people were not going to watch it. Schools are not teaching it, and people are not gonna learn about it even after they start working, and sometimes not even after that,” the content creator said.

And thus in December 2020, he started making engaging YouTube videos on his channel, ‘Finance with Sharan’. “Initially, I thought that a few hundred might watch it, but the reach and speed of the channel really surprised me. Eventually, I started making witty and enlightening Instagram reels and they took off almost immediately,” he shared.

Content Creator | Sharan Hegde | Global Indian

Currently focussed on his organization, Sharan aims to better other people’s lives by spreading financial knowledge. “My mission to spread financial literacy and make it fun for others saw growth in leaps and bounds. Over the last three years, I have realised that there is a need to make finance simple and effective, and that is exactly what I am here to do,” said the content creator, adding, “There are so many people who are better than you, the world is a tough place and sometimes even if you put all your hard work into it, you might still not come first and that is difficult to accept.”

Varin Sikka: The young innovator’s invention AirCat tackles carbon capture with self-sustaining tech

(October 30, 2024) Varin Sikka, a 16-year-old innovator, is advancing climate technology with his invention, AirCat, a Direct Air Capture (DAC) system designed to capture carbon dioxide directly from the atmosphere. AirCat addresses the high energy costs traditionally associated with DAC systems and has been in development for over three years. Sikka’s invention could play a pivotal role in climate change mitigation by offering a new solution to the ongoing issue of carbon emissions. Sikka’s journey with AirCat began in 2020 when intense wildfires near his home in California blanketed the sky in an ominous orange hue for weeks. "The wildfires brought the reality of climate change right to my doorstep," Sikka said. "Seeing it first-hand drove home the urgency of this issue." The fires had an immediate impact on his commitment to climate action, inspiring him to dedicate countless hours to developing a solution. He recognized that traditional DAC systems were often criticized for their high energy consumption, and he set out to create a more efficient alternative. [caption id="attachment_40111" align="aligncenter" width="1024"] Varin Sikka[/caption] From Concept to Prototype Over the next three years, Sikka worked tirelessly to bring AirCat from concept to prototype, learning advanced math and science along

From Concept to Prototype

Over the next three years, Sikka worked tirelessly to bring AirCat from concept to prototype, learning advanced math and science along the way. "Teaching myself the technical aspects was challenging but necessary," he stated. Sikka attributes part of his progress to mentors and internships, which provided guidance and insight into navigating technical obstacles. "Having mentors who believed in my work was a huge help. They kept me motivated when things got tough," he shared.

AirCat’s primary advantage lies in its energy efficiency, which sets it apart from other DAC technologies. Unlike traditional systems, which often require large amounts of external power, AirCat is powered by the excess energy generated by wind turbines. "Many DAC systems require vast amounts of energy, which limits their feasibility," Sikka explained. "But with AirCat, the system essentially powers itself, allowing for net zero energy usage." By utilizing the power that would otherwise go to waste, AirCat provides a sustainable solution with minimal environmental impact. This self-sustaining approach has garnered attention for its potential to reduce the carbon footprint of air capture technology.

A Turning Point at COP28

In 2023, Varin Sikka took his prototype to COP28 in Dubai, where he presented AirCat to a global audience of climate experts. The event marked a significant milestone for him, as he shared his vision for AirCat at the Siemens Energy Pavilion. "Climate change isn’t a distant threat; it’s burning in our lungs, scorching our lands," he told the crowd, urging them to recognize the immediacy of the crisis. His call to action resonated with many in attendance, who saw AirCat as a promising tool in the fight against climate change.

The positive reception at COP28 opened doors for Sikka, including a potential partnership with Siemens Energy. Currently, he is working on scaling AirCat beyond the 3D-printed prototype to an industrial level. His goal is to make AirCat widely available and to deploy it in regions most affected by climate change. "I dream of AirCats helping reduce CO2 levels in developing countries where climate change impacts are most severe," he stated. This vision reflects Sikka’s commitment not just to technological innovation, but to using his work to benefit communities around the world.

Raising Awareness on Climate Solutions

Beyond AirCat’s design, Varin Sikka is passionate about raising awareness around the need for scalable climate solutions. He uses digital platforms to share the science behind carbon capture, often emphasizing the immense scale required to offset current emissions. In a recent blog post, he highlighted that removing the carbon we emit annually would require planting approximately 1.6 trillion trees, a scale that would occupy land equivalent to the size of North America. "It’s an overwhelming task," he wrote, "but it underscores the urgency of investing in technological solutions like AirCat." For Sikka, these calculations demonstrate the need for a multifaceted approach to climate change, one that includes both natural and technological methods of carbon capture.

While AirCat is currently focused on DAC technology, Sikka’s commitment to climate action extends beyond this single invention. He envisions a future where carbon capture becomes a routine aspect of industrial operations worldwide, integrated into energy infrastructures to reduce emissions. "We have the technology; what we need now is action," he emphasized. Sikka advocates for government support of carbon capture technologies, cleaner energy practices, and investments in renewable resources. His vision includes making DAC technology accessible and affordable, especially for developing nations where resources are limited. "DAC can’t just be for wealthy countries," he argued. "The places hit hardest by climate change deserve access to these tools as well."

A Future Beyond AirCat

"DAC can’t just be for wealthy countries. The places hit hardest by climate change deserve access to these tools as well." - Varin Sikka

Looking ahead, Sikka plans to introduce additional innovations to address the climate crisis. "AirCat is just the beginning," he stated. His approach combines scientific rigor with a clear vision for practical, large-scale implementation. Through AirCat and his ongoing efforts, Sikka is positioning himself as a key figure in the next generation of climate innovators. His work exemplifies the role that young inventors can play in tackling global challenges, and he remains committed to his mission. "Climate change demands our best efforts," he said. "I’m just trying to do my part."

ticipated. During the conference, I interacted with astronauts and even had the chance to take selfies and get their autographs,” the thrilled eighteen-year-old said, during an interview with Global Indian.

The cow-dung project

Vinay, who is currently taking a gap year, had worked on a group project in school as part of ATL Space Challenge, an all-India competition launched by NITI Aayog, ISRO and CBSE. In his team project, he came up with a hypothesis about shielding astronauts from galactic cosmic rays, using an unconventional material that would hardly cross anyone’s mind - cow dung. This out-of-the box idea was chosen as one of the 75 ATL winners from across the country, which saw participation from thousands of school kids of India.

After winning the award, Vinay took a leap forward, delved deeper into his research and pursued hard to finally find an opportunity to collaborate with CSIR-National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL) in Bengaluru and scientists from Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) in Mumbai.

The innovative idea that involved cow dung, a material rich in cultural significance, showcased not only scientific promise but also highlighted the value of unconventional resources in interdisciplinary research. This led the acceptance of Vinay’s request by the two esteemed organizations to support and conduct further research on his award-winning idea.

[caption id="attachment_34479" align="aligncenter" width="739"]Indian youth | Vinay Dharmik | Global Indian Vinay Dharmik at Baku[/caption]

While CSIR-NAL helped him in fabricating composites, BARC helped in radiation study, radiation blocking experiments and evaluation of the composites.

“I had sought guidance from CSIR-NAL for exploring the basics of composites, matrix and reinforcements, suitable binders, various resin systems, and fabrication methods in coming up with the fabrication of cow dung composites using an epoxy resin system,” Vinay remarked adding, “While they provided technical expertise, the experience was new for them too.”

When it came to evaluation of the radiation shielding efficacy of his composites, he turned to guidance from scientists of BARC in Mumbai.

With the help of BARC scientists Vinay was able to conduct further radiation studies. His dedication towards a cost effective solution eventually earned him an invitation to present his work at the 74th International Astronautical Congress (IAC), a prestigious event held in Baku this year.

The Baku experience

When Vinay learned about the International Astronautical Congress, he submitted his research paper on the cost-effective, light-weight and effective solution of shielding astronauts from galactic cosmic rays, and was thrilled to get an invitation to present his paper.

[caption id="attachment_34508" align="aligncenter" width="624"]Indian youth | Vinay Dharmik | Global Indian Vinay Dharmik with astronauts at IAC[/caption]

Travelling to Baku proved to be a milestone in the youngster’s life as it happened to be his first foreign trip and that too earned on his own merit. “At IAC I was appreciated for being one of the youngest presenters and the sole author of the research paper that I presented,” he said.

The experience at the IAC has further fuelled the Surat boy’s determination to break barriers of coming from a small town where there is lack of opportunities and support, and aspire towards his dreams. “I want to aid humanity to thrive as an interplanetary species by becoming an astronaut or an engineer,” he remarked adding, “I want to make space tourism and colonization more accessible to people.”

Grateful for support

Grateful for the support that he has received, Vinay remarked, “I attribute my success to the invaluable assistance provided by CSIR-NAL and BARC. Their support allowed me to take my research to new heights. I am especially grateful to Nitin Bhosale Sir from BARC, who has played a significant role in my journey, and guided me in coming up with the research paper.”

The collaboration with scientific institutions has not only honed his technical skills but has given Vinay loads of confidence.

(February 20, 2024) To support vegetarians and young athletes in meeting their daily protein needs, Parth Mutha, a global management student at Boston University, launched his snack company PROMUNCH. The soybean-based snacks, available in flavours such as noodle masala, cheese and onion, tangy pudina and peri peri, are crunchy, protein-packed balls inspired by his grandparents' recipe. "With 48% protein content, vegan and gluten-free, these roasted snacks are also non-GMO (products grown and processed without genetic modification)," claims Parth Mutha.  Emphasising the importance of non-GMO ingredients, he explained in an interview, "Given the prevalence of genetically modified crops today, avoiding GMOs is crucial to prevent health issues like cancer and other diseases." Witnessing the journey of the snack product, made with a recipe sourced from his family kitchen to Amazon storefronts in both India and the USA fills Parth with a sense of pride. "It's surreal to see my products available on Amazon, knowing that this journey began in my kitchen," shared the startup founder and Chief Happiness Officer of PROMUNCH with BU Today, a publication of Boston University.

It started when…

As a vegetarian and a tennis player, Parth Mutha recalls the challenge of finding nutritious, protein-packed snacks particularly after workouts. He often resorted to unhealthy options like potato chips and puffs. Despite their taste, they failed to leave him feeling satisfied.

During the COVID quarantine of 2021, Parth found himself with ample free time, which he utilised to experiment with various recipes in pursuit of a delicious and filling snack. When he shared his plans with his family, they enthusiastically joined him, acting as taste-testers and assisting with production.

After initially selling his product in person towards the end of 2021, Parth’s venture slowly started gaining momentum. “When I started PROMUNCH Protein Snacks, I always dreamt of selling it in the USA, this dream has now been fulfilled,” he remarked.

Expansion with BUild Lab at Boston University

Parth attributes much of PROMUNCH’s growth to the BUild Lab IDG Capital Student Innovation Center, a collaborative space dedicated to assisting Boston University students in developing their business concepts. Inspired by Jen Migliore, the director of external affairs at Innovate@BU, Mutha decided to expand his snack start-up after attending the IDEA Conference at the Questrom School of Business last February.

Whether by fate or mere coincidence, Parth applied to BUild Lab’s Innovation Pathway programme on the final day of application submissions. Since then, the young entrepreneur has diligently worked through the ‘run stage’, which involves verifying that PROMUNCH can be scaled up effectively.

PROMUNCH's customer base has steadily grown with word-of-mouth referrals, participation in small business events, consistent social media marketing efforts, and increased sales through the website.

Scaling up

Starting with just himself, the PROMUNCH team now comprises five members. The snack start-up has additionally engaged influencers and campus ambassadors, who receive a stipend along with complimentary PROMUNCH snack packs based on their marketing performance.

Parth Mutha has been trying his best to balance his studies and business venture. His workday usually commences at noon in Boston, stretching until early morning depending on the requirements. This schedule allows him to effectively manage and collaborate with his team located in a different time zone in India.

Despite the support from family and friends, Parth acknowledges that the challenges of entrepreneurship can be draining. "Some days, you question whether it's truly worth it," he reflects. "There are countless reasons that can make you doubt the value of your efforts." However, the entrepreneur keeps himself motivated.

Future plans

Parth Mutha hopes to expand further into the US market, and then to Amazon United Arab Emirates and Australia over the next three years.

Since many people in India are vegetarians, he aims to address the protein deficiency gap for people in all parts of his country.

“With countless sleepless nights, multiple sampling sessions, various feedbacks, a lot of dreaming, planning and finally executing,” entrepreneurship has been an adventurous journey for the young start-up founder.
