To the stars: Arushi Nath’s planetary defense algorithm won her the Canada-Wide Science Fair twice in a row

At the 2023 Canada-Wide Science Fair awards gala in Edmonton, nearly 900 attendees celebrated the achievements of Canadian students. Among them, fourteen-year-old Arushi Nath, the founder of MonitorMyPlanet, became the first back-to-back best project award winner since 1989-1990, claiming the prize in 2022 and then again 2023. Her project on planetary defense, focusing on detecting unknown asteroids using open data, mathematics, and Python – her algorithm did actually manage to locate three unknown asteroids. Arushi already has a long list of achievements to her name – she came in second at the European Union Contest for Young Scientists in 2023, the winner of the 2023 Young Astronomer Award from the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada. In 2020, at the age of 11, she won the NASA SpaceAppsGlobal Challenge and in 2017, was the Canada SpaceApps Winner when she was eight years old!

A young genius

For as long as Arushi can remember, she was fascinated by the night sky, and the many mysteries it represented. “I remember using binoculars to pick out planets and trying to identify patterns. And I still remember seeing the rings of Saturn for the first time, when I was nine” says Arushi, in an interview with Global Indian. Academically, she had long since surpassed her school work, and wanted to spend her time taking deep dives into the subjects she loved most – math, coding and astronomy. Her parents – her father is an environmentalist and her mother a writer – supported their daughter fully and when Arushi was six, her dad drove her to her first ever hackathon.

The hackathon veteran

This was 2014 and Arushi was the youngest competitor there, by far. NASA’s Curiosity rover had just landed on Mars and Arushi was “so fascinated by the idea of being able to land and control something on a whole other planet,” she smiles. So, at the hackathon, she and her team made a little robot that could identify obstacles and avoid them. Very complex work for a six-year-old – “We created the physical structure, then coded it,” Arushi explains. The robot’s ultrasonic sensor could detect obstacles and avoid them. And all this was possible because Arushi had already familiarised herself with Arduino – an open-source electronic prototyping platform that allows users to create interactive electronic objects.

As far as Arushi was concerned, doing projects was the best way to learn. She also wanted to bring her scientific acumen together with the things she cared about. So, in 2018, when she and her friends attended the School Strike for Climate started by Swedish Climate activist Greta Thunberg, Arushi wanted to do more “than raise slogans or wait for others to act,” she said.

S.N.A.C.K.

This led to her designing ‘Schools and NASA Aiding Climate Action by Kids’, which  comes with the catchy abbreviation, ‘S.N.A.C.K.’. The project uses satellite imagery to calculate tree densities of schools in Toronto, than ranks and maps them. She also designed a pollution sensor to measure levels in parks and schools across the city, using Arduino, the open source electronics platform that lets users create interactive models. “I wanted school children to come up with local solutions to global challenges,” she says.

Her efforts resulted in her being named the NASA SpaceApps Global Nominee – she had already won the Space Apps Challenge in 2014 and again in 2018. In fact, by the age of 10, she had been at a jaw-dropping 29 hackathons. This was a special win, though, she says, of S.N.A.C.K, as it was her first solo attempt. ” I had to do all the work myself, from thinking of the idea, making it, coding and presenting it to the judges in 40 hours.”

The dragonfly drone

As far as Arushi was concerned, doing projects was the best way to learn. During the Covid-19, she began work on her first major endeavour – building a drone – quite a feat for the young scientist, who was only 10 years old at the time. The idea for the directional dragonfly drone was born during the COVID-19 lockdown. Disturbed by the news of locusts devastating crops in Asia and Africa, Arushi saw an opportunity to make a difference. “These locusts often travel in large swarms, are very fast, and can change direction unpredictably,” the Global Indian explained, underlining the urgency of the problem.

Arushi’s solution was to use drones for locust control, “as they can fly, follow the locusts, and monitor their behavior,” she explains. She also wanted to biomimic nature, choosing the dragonfly because it is by far the most efficient hunter, with a 95 percent success rate in catching prey (in comparison, the success rate of lions is 25 percent and sharks have a 50 percent chance of success). “I made a protoype using a soda can, a motor and a distance sensor I created on Arduino,” Arushi says. When she returned from the Ellehacks hackathon, she refined her model, using lego pieces to create a drone “I programmed it to identify all red objects as locusts,” she said, describing the functionality of her creation.

The planetary defense system

Given her involvement with the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada, her prowess with Python and her love for Maths, Arushi was casting around for a way to bring all her passions together. That’s how she the idea for planetary defense against unknown asteroids was born. She had learned about robotic telescopes through the RASC and utilised images from these devices – “I took images from robotic telescopes in Canada, Spain, the US, and Australia to get full sky coverage,” Arushi explains. She had to sift through these to pinpoint the unknown asteroids, using the Gaia Star Catalogue for information on star positions, and the NASA Horizon dataset, for predictions on the locations of known asteroids. Then, using her coding and math skills, she developed an algorithm to filter out known entities – “I created custom masks to remove all these objects, leaving me with the unknown objects,” she explains.

She couldn’t always go it alone, though, often turning to online forums for help. “When I got some errors, I would try for days, even weeks, on my own to find the answer, but if not, I would reach out to specific forums,” she says. She also reached out to experts, including Christina Thomas, the lead investigator on NASA’s DART mission. “”I sent her a message, told her about my current project, and asked if I could have a Zoom meeting to talk to her about her project and how it could relate to mine,” Arushi smiles. Thomas responded and the two did get on that Zoom meeting. “I actually asked her for pointers on my project and what I could do,” she adds.

Finding acclaim

“The whole thing took about ten months to complete,” Arushi says, Her goals changed along the way, so much so that her first goal and the end result were very different.” Finally, her findings were sent to the Minor Planet Center database. Then came waiting for a response. “A couple of weeks later, I got an email and three of the asteroids had my name next to them,” Arushi smiles. She submitted her project to the Toronto Science Fair and won gold, qualifying for the prestigious Canada-Wide Science Fair, where she also went on to win. “I was watching the results with my family and wasn’t expecting my name to pop up again but it did,” she says.

Now, Arushi is continuing work on her planetary defense project. Now that the DART Mission has successfully entered the Didymos (asteroid) system, she wants to measure the changes of the system during this impact. “I began studying the Didymos binary system for a copule of months before the DART impact,” she says, “To fully understand how it has been affected.”

While I was always interested in STEM, it was after this that I started getting more interested in the neurological aspect, and it motivated me to start a startup Grey Horizon, a venture into low-cost neuroimaging," Aditya tells Global Indian, adding, "We created a device NeuroSight that can convert thoughts into words."

In India, more than 7 million people currently suffer from Parkinson's and Aditya was keen to find a solution, that was low-cost and effective. The idea stemmed from his grandfather's condition, and for months, he did research to understand but it was in 2022 that Grey Horizon and NeuroSight came into actualisation. Aditya explains that the research behind neuroimaging has been happening since the 1950s, however, it hasn't translated into anything concrete that can be put into daily use. "However, Elon Musk's Neuralink is one of the breakthroughs that has happened in this space recently, however, it is invasive where you surgically implant electrodes in the brain that reads the data that your brain is firing. However, we wanted something non-invasive, portable, and in real-time. So, we opted for EEG and merge it with the AI and ML, and use the technology in the form of a headset," adds Aditya saying that while searching for electrodes for EEG, he came across many which costs between ₹30,000 to ₹1 lakh. "We decided to come up with our headset under the budget of ₹5000." With the help of the sensors and electrodes, it collects data from the patient's brain and relays it to an app used by the patient's family member or caretaker. "The data from imaginary cortex and visual cortex is mapped out on a graph, and try to read them through AI and ML in real-time."

It was in early 2023 that Aditya started working on the prototype, which is in the process of fine-tuning. "We are now working on getting the data converted into text in real-time - as in the same second that the thought arises in the patient's mind." He reveals that it began as a research paper - which won acclaim from The Hong Kong Academy of Sciences - and later turned into hardware with NeuroSight. Now, Aditya and his team are trying to take this a notch higher by converting thoughts into actions, using prosthetic/robotic arms. "We wanted to focus on functionality as well since you can't control your muscles in Parkinson's because of the involuntary muscle movement. We recently pitched the robotic arm at one of the innovation and science fairs. We are now looking for mentorship in regards to advanced research behind neuroimaging that can validate our technology and work with people who can help convert the hardware into a minimum viable product."

Personal setbacks led to the formation of a platform

However, it wasn't an easy road for Aditya as he had to face many rejections to reach where he is now. "I started late, and that's a regret that I have. I could have done much more, but it took me a while to figure out, and now I am putting the pedal on the gas and accelerating the progress," says the teen, who had a hard time figuring out the right opportunities during his school time.

Being the one who learned the hard way, he was keen to help aspiring innovators who, like him, didn't know where to begin. This led him to start Kalam, a platform to help students access meaningful opportunities where they can convert their ideas into innovations. "We started it as an opportunity access but now plan to see it as a Y-combinator for high school students where they can convert ideas into actual startups," says Aditya, who is keen to make "a genuine impact."

Though the NeuroSight prototype is still undergoing a handful of upgradations, Aditya wants the technology to reach the maximum people, once it becomes a viable product that can be placed in the market. Moreover, he is keen to expand the horizon by integrating the technology for gaming purposes. "You can control the gaming outplay with your thoughts. NeuroSight can move to other commercial aspects as well like mindfulness app," reveals the teen who is in talks with a bunch of accelerators pitching his ideas.

Aditya, who calls himself a cinephile and a bibliophile, has a personal library of over 100 books that he has collected over the years from book markets. Along with innovation, storytelling is close to his heart, and an area that he wants to explore shortly.

The teen, who passed out of school early this year, is using this year to explore more opportunities before applying for MIT and the California Institute of Technology next year. "Engineering students have only one dream - to crack JEE. But I don't want to restrict myself and explore as many possibilities as I can. I am giving my all to leave a mark in the world of innovation," he signs off.

Jasraaj Singh: Embracing the road less travelled in Australian rural medicine

(April 20, 2024) When Jasraaj Singh gained admission to the University of Melbourne's medical school, her initial ambition was to become a neurosurgeon. However, she soon discovered her true passion for rural medicine. Due to her dedication to rural healthcare and the significant contributions she made in this field, the Rural Doctors Association of Australia (RDAA) honoured her with the Medical Student of the Year Award in 2022. Since 2006, the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) and RDAA have been recognising the achievements and commitment of medical students working in rural and remote health. This annual award honours the most deserving candidate who has demonstrated a strong passion and commitment to rural healthcare. The joy of working for rural healthcare

Born in Nambour on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, Jasraaj grew up on a macadamia nut farm at Didillibah, a semi-rural locality in the Sunshine Coast Region. At school she undertook a voluntary work at a local children’s hospital, which sparked her interest in the field of medicine.

“Being in that hospital environment and seeing the doctors, nurses and the allied health teams all working together with families and patients to help them get better was inspiring.” It left an indelible mark on the impressionable mind and Jasraaj realised that this is what she would like to do when she grows up – to take care of patients as a doctor.

Later, when she went to medical school, she got the opportunity to be part of the Extended Rural Cohort. As part of the University of Melbourne's commitment to rural health, the Melbourne Medical School launched a Rural Pathway option within the MD programme. Hailing from a semi-rural locality in Australia, Jasraaj calls herself ‘a country girl at heart’. She felt drawn towards this option and ended up falling in love with rural healthcare, becoming totally immersed in it.

Jasraaj completed all her medical training in rural areas since the second year of her medical degree, including some internship opportunities at the interiors of Shepparton, Wangaratta, Ballarat and Bendigo.

“It has been such a rewarding, eye-opening and exciting adventure. I strongly believe all healthcare students should be undertaking rural placements in some way, shape or form,” she remarked. 

While working at Nhulunbuy, East Arnhem Land, she developed a deep appreciation for the ‘incredible skill set’ of generalist doctors working in remote communities.

“I have had the opportunity to meet incredible and inspiring people, undertake hands-on and practical clinical placements, become part of rural and remote communities across Australia, and develop my clinical and life experiences along the way,” she shared.

Misconception – excitement and real medicine exists in cities only

Not all students studying in big towns opt to work in rural settings. They do not find that exciting enough. “I aim to challenge the common misconception that all the excitement and ‘real medicine’ happens in the city,” remarked the youngster.

Based on her own experiences, she has come to realise that rural settings offer much more than commonly believed. She firmly believes that this segment provides a diverse range of learning opportunities for medical professionals.

“You get exposure to all different sorts of things and quite a balancing act is required for what you are often dealing with. There are sometimes complex social issues such as geographical isolation, issues with health literacy - and so there's a lot to unpack. It's a challenging but really interesting space, I think to work in.”

As a passionate advocate for rural health, Jasraaj has undertaken various volunteer roles aimed at changing perceptions. She served as the President of her university’s rural health club, Additionally, she held the position of President of the Surgical Students Society of Melbourne where she worked to improve accessibility to surgical research in rural areas. Jasraaj also chaired the society’s Rural Committee.

Finding bliss in the rural path

After graduating from the University of Melbourne Medical School, Jasraaj Singh started work as a junior doctor at the Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service in 2023 and began practicing in Far North Queensland.

During her final year as a student, she had already gained some experience in the hospital through short-term work there. “I was drawn to the friendly atmosphere, beautiful surroundings and opportunities to expand my knowledge of rural and remote health,” she had remarked adding, “I’m looking forward to the warm weather, close-knit community atmosphere, beautiful landscapes, tropical and rural medicine opportunities, exploring a new place and developing practical and useful skills to apply as a future rural generalist.”

Jeeva Senthilnathan: The Indian American 2021 Global Teen Leader steering change

An Indian girl is hoping to change the unbearable plight of being in Colorado - through leadership, mental health awareness, and as a voice against sexual harassment. Even though it has not been even sailing for Jeeva Senthilnathan, the 18-year-old from Chicago, Illinois, she has persevered. Today, as a global teen leader, game changer and leader for the community at Parker, Colorado, Jeeva continues to inspire. Winner of the Philanthropic Education Organization (PEO) STAR Scholarship, the National Honor Society Top 24 Scholarship (the only student from Colorado), and lauded by the Nile Rodger’s We Are Family Foundation, the introvert is an activist at heart . The girl who ran for Parker Town Council, and a former council member at one time is now focusing on helping Afghans in the US seek asylum, and getting them to register to vote.  Among her most fulfilling endeavors, is starting Privando, an organization that works to solve the deep-seated malaise when it comes to sexual harassment and the rape crisis in India. Inspired by the emergency blue lights boxes used on university campuses to create a gadget that creates a network for women to receive help in life-threatening or unsafe situations, Jeeva tells Global Indian, “We mobilized young women in India from village huts to city slums to build a coalition that would not only fight against such incidents, but also create a private network for victims to heal. Privando has been able to obtain $5,000, and is currently working on developing wearable technology: it has saved more than 1,000 women from human trafficking.”

Rooted in India

Her mother, a microbiologist from Chennai, and father, a software developer from Vellore, immigrated to the US in 1998. From Ohio, to Illinois, and finally Colorado, the Senthilnathans were in search of a job for her mother. Learning how it was to be discriminated due to race and color, her “very White school” lacked diversity. She was bullied frequently, and unable to cope, she developed hypothyroidism in second grade, was on medication, and battled depression in sixth grade. “I was quiet, known as the ‘goody-two shoes’ in school. I wasn’t good at public speaking as I lacked confidence,” she says. Taking the challenge head on, she started debating through high school, regardless of the brickbats, sneers, and laughs. Now, the bespectacled girl’s gentle smile exudes wisdom, “I worked hard on issues I cared about, and concentrated on no one but myself. I was my only competition.” 

Today, she feels integrated (tied to her Indian roots) rather than assimilated (Americanized). Having parents that helped her believe, and persevere helped her change her circumstances, and life. She and her elder sister Lakshmi Priya saw their parents working long hours. “It helped me challenge myself. I understood the hardships they went through to give us better lives. I realized that I have to work hard to give meaning to my parents’ struggles. Now, I have decided to not work under anyone. I want to lead by becoming my own boss,” she declares.

Turning the spotlight on mental health

Working on mental health started in high school, and while working at Colorado State Capitol in state representative Tom Sullivan’s office, Jeeva saw states passing a legislation on students having to take off mental health days. This made her question America’s standard of education. 

“My research became even more important after my greatest mentor, best friend and big brother Jai Rajagopal lost his battle against depression during my first run for office. I will always be thankful to Jai because he lifted me to greater heights unequivocally, and took good care of me in the most difficult times. My first government job was also because of Jai, and I will remember him every time I run for a new office,” Jeeva says.  

Covid warrior

During COVID-19 Jeeva started a donation drive to provide oxygen cylinders and oxygen tanks to prepare of India’s third wave, with the Privando team. Jeeva also helped fund students from the High School Democrats of America with online training on larger campaign positions and winning strategies with 10 hours paid work with the help of a grant from Blue Future, an organization that helps mobilize young people to work on campaigns within America. “I took leadership to provide students a stipend while working for a state race – House District 44 in Colorado. I wanted to provide a virtual opportunity for students who needed experience for college applications,” she adds. 

Speaking against gun violence while she was working on her first campaign with Simone Aiken (who ran for House District 44 in 2018), and at Tom Sullivan’s office, she explains, “The Extreme Risk Protection Order, also known as ERPO and Red Flag Law, was the legislation inputted to take away firearms temporarily from the mentally ill. The legislation was opposed by Sullivan’s Republican colleagues, though Republican Sherriff Tony Spurlock favored it, and stressed the need for the legislation to assist the police force.”

Empowering women

The PEO STAR Scholar at Littleton (Colorado), is using Privando to empower women, and is the only student in Colorado to be the National Honor’s Society Finalist, a Top 24 Scholar, for which she was awarded $5,625. 

As part of the Global Teen Leader program, she worked with over 40 global teen leaders in the summer of 2021 and bounced off new progressive ideas. Jeeva formed a deep friendship with Malawian Chmba Chilemba, Youth To The Front Manager, and facilitator for the Just Peace Summit. “She is an inspiration – so sincere, working hard to solve child marriages in Africa. She DJs in her free time,” she adds. 

She is grateful that Colorado Early College Parker (high school) helped her focus on important matters – she received college credits, an associate’s degree for a guaranteed transfer at Colorado School Of Mines. “I was given $2,100 per semester as a full-time student allowing me to pay for half of my bachelor’s degree when I transferred my courses at CECP,” says the mechanical engineering student. 

Eye on the future

A voracious reader, Jeeva loves sitting in libraries, devouring books, or watching Netflix. The adrenaline seeker can be seen car racing in Colorado. Next on Jeeva’s to do list is to continue to spread Privando’s reach, finish an MBA and Juris Doctorate. “I have a dream to run for Congress once I turn 25, in the House of Representatives.” Solemn advice? “This world is an ugly place, and our earlier generations created a competitive lifestyle. Students trying to find their way should not forget to live life to the fullest. Make families, education, and being your own boss in something passionate a priority. Stop comparing, focus on yourself. I would love to guide anyone (jeeva4parker.com).

According to the World Vision Report, prepared by WHO, over 2.2 billion people worldwide are visually impaired and nearly half that number live with treatable or preventable conditions because they cannot get the care they need. The second-leading cause of blindness is glaucoma, with an estimated 57.5 million people around the world affected by primary open-angle glaucoma. In 2020, according to the National Center for Biotechnology Information, this number rose to 76 million. Among those tackling the problem head-on is Ontario teen Hardit Singh whose innovation is a step towards better healthcare for all. The Global Indian, who also won second place at the European Union Contest for Young Scientists, intends for the device to be used by international NGOs working to bring equality in eyecare.

The vision 

Born and raised in Waterloo, the idea took root around three years ago, when a friend from the Cameron Heights Collegiate in Kitchener, where Hardik studied, suffered from retinal detachment, where the retina begins to peel off the eye. "He went to three different opthalmologists and experts and was misdiagnosed all three times for different reasons. He went almost blind because of it," Hardit said in an interview for the Canada-Wide Science Fair. Luckily, doctors managed to detect it before the damage became irreversible. It made Hardit wonder - if such misdiagnoses can happen in a place like Waterloo, what could conditions possibly be in rural or low-income areas, where there is little proximity to healthcare facilities?

By this time, the then 13-year-old Hardit was already building classification algorithms and had a basic understanding of AI from previous projects. He hit the books, learning from YouTube, books and just "trying things out, playing around until it works. That works for hardware, you tinker until you understand what happens. It's the same with optics. I learned until I had enough to build what I wanted."

He began cold-emailing professors, eventually hearing back from the University of Waterloo's Department of Optometry. Hardit began working with a group of grad students, going to them with questions or when he was struggling. The hardware had to be built, the software coded and the two integrated. He worked in the lab, testing the device on a model eye in controlled conditions.

Challenges and stepping stones

Speculor worked smoothly in the lab and Hardit decided to roll out his prototype. When he tested it on the field, however, "everything failed," he admits. He had made one fundamental mistake - he hadn't geared the device for less than optimal conditions. "I had designed the prototype to work in perfect condtions but in poor lighting, when the patient is moving around, the device wsn't working at all. The AI had the same problem." The AI sensor was used to very high-quality images, taken by devices, Hardit says, that cost USD 25,000 and up. "My device can't produce such images and it was throwing the AI off."

"I was frustrated. I had put in so much effort and the device didn't work at all. But my mind was already working on how to fix it." With the hardware, his moment of revelation came through integrating cross-polarisation, a technique used in more expensive fundus cameras but rarely in more affordable devices. "It worked really well to ensure there was no glare on the fundus images," he said. He tried a number of solutions with the AI, but nothing worked, until he developed his own training method. The AI was trained to study low quality images, account for poor lighting and movement and detect anomalies under these parameters.

Hardit Singh sent the device for testing once more, this time to an opthalmologist in India. The feedback was far more promising. "The second time, the images turned out really good. It was amazing because I still wasn't expecting it to work, I only had acess to a model eye. This was a Hail mary move for me, sending a protype to India blindly without a test."

Always a work-in-progress

Hardit's eventual goal is to commercialise the device, pricing it within reach of international NGOs and organisations, to improve healthcare in rural and underserved areas around the world. The cost is currently dominated by the lens, which is about $250. He is also working to improve the design, after a judge from the CWSF remarked that it was "too boxy."

Hardit Singh also wants to expand the scope of his device, which is now mainly used in glaucoma detetion. "I can reapply the same model over different diseases by changing the paramters," he says. He also wants to make it easy to understand, to aid doctors as they make a diagnosis.

Hardit has also published a paper on AI in the Journal of the Optical Society of India. His other interests include computer science, AI, optics, medicine and sports.

(August 2, 2024) “Apart from the Olympics of sports, a few days ago an Olympics took place in the world of Mathematics – the International Mathematical Olympiad. In this Olympiad, the students of India performed very well,” remarked Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the latest episode of his monthly radio broadcast, Mann Ki Baat. “Our team has given its best performance, winning four golds and one silver. Youth from more than 100 countries participate in the Olympiad, and our team was successful in ranking in the top five in the overall tally,” he said praising the young math wizards. The six-member team that brought India laurels comprised of Aditya Mangudy Venkat Ganesh (Pune), Siddharth Chopra (Pune), Arjun Gupta (Delhi), Kanav Talwar (Greater Noida), Rushil Mathur (Mumbai), and Anando Bhaduri (Guwahati). India’s legacy at the International Mathematical Olympiad

This year teams from the USA, China, and South Korea finished as the top three winners. India secured a total score of 167, just one mark behind South Korea, which finished third. A total of 609 students (528 male, and 81 female) participated at the IMO 2024, representing 108 countries.

The fourth rank in 2024, marks the best performance by India at the IMO since the country’s debut in 1989, both in terms of the number of gold medals won and the rank achieved. Previously, India's highest rank was seventh, which was achieved in both IMO 1998 and 2001.

Since 2019 (except for 2020 when the team couldn't participate), Team India has secured at least one gold medal every year, accumulating a total of nine gold medals over this period.

Indian team member Aditya's performance also earned him an overall ranking of fifth, marking the best performance by an individual from an Indian team ever.

Talking about his tryst with mathematics Aditya shared with the PM, “I had keen interest in math since early childhood. My teacher in standard six played a significant role in developing my interest in the subject.” While Siddharth his school mate added “I was in same class as Aditya and even I had interest in math since childhood, and the same teacher helped us hone our skills in standard six.”

Indian contingent in the UK

Before heading for the competition, the Indian team trained at the IMO Training Camp held at Chennai Mathematical Institute (CMI). In UK the young math wizards were accompanied by mentors like professor Krishnan Sivasubramanian of IIT Bombay, and former IMO medallists Rijul Saini of Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBSCE), and Rohan Goyal; currently a Ph D student at MIT, USA, among others.

Apart from participating in the competition the high schoolers were thrilled to meet people from different countries and to explore the city of Bath and Oxford. “We met lots of students from other countries and it was very nice to interact and connect with them. We also got an opportunity to meet several famous mathematicians. We loved exploring the city of Bath and were even taken to Oxford University. It was a very good experience,” Siddharth shared in Mann Ki Baat.

Making friendship with mathematics

Answering Modi’s question on how to build a friendship with mathematics, Rushil remarked, “When we learn addition as kids, we are taught to carry-forward, but we are not taught why carry-forward is important. Similarly, when we learn about compound interest, we never ask where the formula for compound interest comes from. I think that maths is actually an art of thinking and problem-solving. I believe that while practising maths, if we question why we have to do things the way we are taught, and understand the reasons – it would increase our interest in the subject, as students get scared of things which they cannot understand.

Rushil looks at mathematics as a very logical subject. “It allows creative thinking, enabling students to come up with out-of-the-box solutions - a quality that comes in handy in the Maths Olympiad.”

Preparation, selection and family’s support

The students participating in the Mathematical Olympiad get four-and-a-half hours to solve a paper consisting of three long math problems. Although, on average, there is one-and-a-half hours to solve each problem, they are complex and the preparation to answer them correctly takes days.

“During the preparation phase, it takes up to three days to work on one such problem,” Arjun shared. Talking about the preparation process, he informed the PM that the team prepared for IMO by looking up problems on the internet and practising previous years’ papers. “As we worked on the problems, our speed and proficiency increased - most significantly, our problem-solving ability improved, helping us not just in mathematics but in other walks of life.”

Kanav from Greater Noida, who is now in class 11, shared that he started preparing for the Olympiad when he was in standard seven. Both he and Arjun credited their families for support. “I feel that when a member of a family is preparing for such a competition, it’s not just the struggle of the participant but the entire family,” remarked Arjun.

Selection for the finalists from India for the International Mathematical Olympiad is conducted in five stages by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE). Kanav shared that although he came very close to qualifying last year, he could not finally make it and was dejected. However, he felt motivated by his parents' words – ‘that it’s the journey that is important, not the destination’. “If we love the subject and enjoy the journey, we will ultimately get success,” was the advice of his parents that kept him motivated.

Strategy of success

It was Anando’s second IMO experience, and he loved both. “Math requires patience,” he believes. “In the way we are taught maths, we are given a formula to memorise. Whether one truly understands the formula is often overlooked. Just solving problems using the formula is emphasised, so that with practice, the formula gets ingrained in memory. But what would happen if one forgets the formula in the exam? Hence students should try to understand the formula first,” was his advice to students.
