Vedangi Gawde: The 24-year-old pastry chef named Callebaut Patissier of the Year 2024

(June 30, 2024) From following her mother around as she baked cakes, to whipping up a culinary storm in the kitchen and winning laurels for her work, Vedangi Gawde’s journey is that of daring to dream and working hard to make those dreams come true. The 24-year-old’s journey is a testament to passion, perseverance, and creativity.

Most recently, Vedangi Gawde is the winner of the coveted culinary award Callebaut Patissier of the Year 2024, which enables pastry chefs to showcase their artistry, ingenuity and talent through a variety of challenges. She was the only female contestant in the running and eventually emerged victorious.

Joining the league of young chefs who are making their mark by daring to be different, Vedangi currently works with Sivako, a prominent Mumbai-based patisserie, where she uses her vivid imagination to craft artistic culinary experiences that are simple yet exquisite.

Sweet surprises

Vedangi’s story began in her family’s kitchen in Mumbai, where she grew up and where her mother would bake cakes. She recalls, ‘My mother used to make simple pound cakes with butter cream because we loved it. We used to live in a chawl, and even my neighbors enjoyed her culinary creations. Being a Maharashtrian, I grew up eating the most amazing puran poli and modaks, which were usually whipped up during festivals and special occasions,” she tells Global Indian.

These early experiences ignited a love for baking that lay dormant while she pursued a career as a chartered accountant. However, when that path didn’t pan out, Vedangi returned to her first love—baking. This rekindling of passion led her to the Academy of Pastry and Culinary Arts (APCA), where she completed a diploma course that set her on the path to professional pastry making.

Her first job post-APCA was at Sivako, where she started as a commis (junior chef) and quickly rose to the position of chef de partie. It was here that Vedangi’s talents truly began to shine. “The first dessert I ever made was a layered sponge dark chocolate cake. It was a bit of a challenge, but the satisfaction of creating something so delicious made it all worth it,” she recalls. This early success cemented her belief that the kitchen was where she belonged.

One of Vedangi’s unique specialties is hand-painting on chocolate and bonbons, a skill that showcases her artistic flair. “I’ve worked on something different that most people don’t usually do: hand-painting on chocolate. It really showcases my creative side,” she says. This meticulous and visually stunning technique has become a hallmark of her work, setting her apart in a competitive field.

Breaking barriers and baking dreams

Despite her introverted nature, Vedangi found that mastering new skills in the kitchen also helped her connect more with those around her. Working under the guidance of Chef Eureka at Sivako, she gained confidence and learned to express her passion for baking while building meaningful relationships. “Chef Eureka is a true mentor who has enabled me to learn and grow. I could not have asked for a better mentor. As I mastered new skills, I also gained the courage to connect more with those around me,” she shares.

Vedangi acknowledges the challenges of introducing new flavors in a market that often prefers familiar tastes. “Many of us in India often stick to familiar flavors, making it tough to introduce new tastes and keep up with food trends,” she explains. Yet, she remains undeterred, constantly innovating and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in the world of pastry.

The young chef has for long had a fascination for Paris and the delectable desserts served in the city, from rich eclairs to layered entremets. She states, “Even as a child, I used to love to paint, and I think that creativity has come to the fore while I make pastries and desserts. This helps me to create visually appealing desserts that people can savor. It gives me great satisfaction when people enjoy my creations.”

Entering a male bastion

The pastry industry, like many culinary fields, has historically been male-dominated, but Vedangi sees this changing. “Yes, there are fewer female pâtissiers compared to males, though this is gradually changing as more women enter and excel in the profession,” she notes. Her own journey is a testament to this shift, as she continues to make her mark with every dessert she creates.

While dessert for Indians meant eating black forest cake at your neighborhood bakery, things have changed remarkably over the years. Traveling abroad and being exposed to the best of world cuisine has meant that Indians today are hooked on gourmet desserts. The chef agrees, “Today people are extremely knowledgeable and understand the nuances of different desserts. Instagram, of course, has helped, and this keeps us on our toes to keep experimenting and pushing the bar.”

A sweet revolution

Winning the coveted award by the Belgian chocolate maker Callebaut has added a spring to her step. “My father has not stopped telling people that I am an award-winning chef,” she smiles and adds. “It has been an incredible journey, especially because I had to think quickly on my feet and managed to do so.”

The competition saw contestants being challenged through crafting bonbons, fresh pastries, mystery box items, snacks on the go, and a grand chocolate display that reflected their resourcefulness in bakery, pastry, confectionery, and showpiece categories. Vedangi excelled at every task, showcasing her versatility in skill and style!

With an eye on the future, the Vedangi Gawde is dedicated to achieving her goals and creating her own identity in the pastry world. “This is just the beginning; many more achievements are on the horizon. I am dedicated to working hard and achieving all my goals,” she affirms.

Vedangi’s triumph is a beacon of inspiration, proving that passion and hard work can turn dreams into reality. With plans to open her own patisserie, she envisions a future where her innovative desserts delight palates worldwide, solidifying her place as a trailblazer in the culinary world.

The engineer from Bangalore 

Born in Bhopal, Kalra moved to Bengaluru when he was less than a year old as his father worked with BHEL. After schooling at Baldwin’s Boys High School, he did his mechanical engineering from Bangalore University in 1994. “This was the age of the new tech entrepreneur and I was hugely inspired by the success of Infosys. I wanted to do something on my own,” recalls Kalra, who then began helping his sister and her husband with the St Marks Business Centre. “I would help them with design when I was still in college. It was here that I learnt the fundamentals of working with debit and credit.” 

As his engineering course, he launched his own company in the services line. So, in 1995 he rented office space at St Marks and launched the St Marks CADD Services after obtaining a bank loan. “Around that time a lot of old engineering drawings were being digitised and I jumped onto the bandwagon. I got my first break with Tata Consulting Engineering and that set the ball rolling. We would digitise drafts and also engineer design and details,” says Kalra, who grew the team from a single member company to a team of 80 engineers. 

A course in executive education and disruptive strategy at Harvard University, the world of mapping is his oyster.

Mapping forth 

Their next break came with projects for Kyga nuclear power plant, Bosche and other architects. In 1996, they landed a contract with Chicago Computerised Facility Integration (CFI). “They had a huge contract with AT&T and were looking for a company to work on the offshore model. We landed the deal and would work on the UNIX system when modem speeds were around 14kbps. We would go to the VSNL office to upload large files,” he smiles of a simpler yet tougher IT era. 

Following the telecom bust CFI pivoted its model to focus on geospatial mapping. Soon Kalra’s company followed suit. They bought the first few licenses for the SIM software and turned their focus to the field of GIS. In 2000, Kalra founded Magnasoft by merging St Marks CADD Services and raised VC funds from Global Technology Ventures, the VC arm of Café Coffee Day Group. “Around this time the government changed in Karnataka and was looking to create a geospatial map of the Bangalore. We were invited to show how GIS could improve Bangalore city. So, while most other companies focused on power point presentations, what we did was focus on the heart of the municipal system: property taxation,” he tells Global Indian. 

Within a week Kalra and his team came up with a property enumeration programme; they mapped a small area of the city (Richmond Town area), and conducted a survey keeping all the parameters that influenced taxation in mind. Magnasoft landed the contract and soon it was helping Bangalore increase its taxation by 100 percent.

Pivoting the business 

Like any entrepreneurial journey, Kalra’s was also speckled with challenges. But the company’s agility and Kalra’s foresight to pivot as per the need help them not just stay afloat but also grow slowly but steadily. After the dot com crash, Magnasoft began looking at markets abroad and invested directly in US sales. “Ever since, it has been a journey of accruals and reinvesting,” says the entrepreneur who moved to the US in 2002 to expand his business and focus on fundamental growth and cash flows. 

Soon they had a presence in over 72 countries such as North America, Europe, Latin America, Australia, Middle East, Africa and New Zealand. As the market began opening up to GISM, Magnasoft too began to cause a disruption in the space. By 2008 though, Kalra moved back to India and 

continued to shuttle between the US and India to work on his business. “Today, we’ve chosen to focus only on a few verticals such as utilities, communications, telecom, vegetation management for power lines, high tech, and infrastructure. We’ve also pared down our operations to just a few markets like North America, Scandinavia and UK apart from a few large enterprise deals in India,” says Kalra, who is now focused on direct sales and hiring talent for leadership roles in the US and UK.

On the growth path 

The company has also brought on board directors and advisors: Phaneesh Murthy, Abraham Mathew, Rajeev Kuchal, and Bhupinder Singh. “The board has been instrumental in helping us focus on a few strong points and strengthen our presence in those areas. The pandemic, of course, had thrown us off path for about a month, but the company was agile enough to get back on track within 30 days. Our staff was all working from home and we managed to put in space systems and security practices to ensure that work continued regardless,” says the agile entrepreneur, who typically begins his day 4 am. 

What keeps him going is his love for mapping and the fact that he enjoys visualisation. That apart, Kalra also has a love for theatre and has in the past portrayed small roles in several plays, including Girish Karnad’s Crossing to Talikota. “Due to time constraints, I don’t take on any big roles, but I’ve loved essaying small roles and working on the back-end. I’ve also acted in a Kannada serial,” says the man, who has worked with theatre artistes like Arjun Sajnani, Munira Sen, and Ashish Sen. 

On the weekends, jam sessions where he plays the guitar and percussion instruments is his energizing time. Incidentally, Kalra was a drummer back in his college days. That apart, he also believes in giving back to the community he lives and works in and is an active member of the Bangalore Round Table. “We have worked towards helping educate over 3 million children through the Freedom Through Education programme and during the pandemic we also worked towards procuring and distributing oxygen concentrators,” says the multi-faceted Kalra. 

Incidentally, Bobbie, had also launched an ingenious app in Mumbai to protect children commuting to and fro from school. The app, Northstar was designed for both parents and school authorities to keep an eye on their children in real time. At heart, disruption is key to his goals, even as he takes time to give back to society, albeit tech wise.

She had even designed clothes for a couple of music videos and looked forward to her future in Mumbai. Marriage, however, changed it all when her husband, a doctor, decided to move to the UK for training. There, she discovered a love for baking. Later, she joined Benzer, a Mumbai-brand known for ethnic fashion, western-formals, casuals and even bridal wear. It was an exciting time – Chetna designed clothes for a couple of music videos, worked as a fashion stylist for a few magazines and even started her own label. “All in all, it was a great experience,” the Indian chef reflects.

In 2004, Chetna found herself moving to Broadstairs, Kent, in the UK, with her doctor husband. It was a big change and when her husband was away, Chetna began looking for ways to keep herself occupied, trying different things to find what she loved. As it turns out, she loves baking. First, she noticed her family enjoyed her creations and then praise began pouring in from friends. And slowly, a simple hobby turned into a passion.

The Great British Bake Off

In 2004, ten years after she first began dabbling with baking as a hobby, came the Great British Bake Off and with it, the start of a new career. “In 2014, I applied to be a part of the biggest baking show. Getting in became a turning point and it is how I began my career in food. It wasn’t actually a planned shift,” says the Indian chef.

Being part of the show involved a rigorous, four-round elimination process. “It was nerve-wracking but an amazing experience on the whole,” Chetna recalls. “Being in the tent with the group was exciting, I made amazing friends and we are all in touch with each other still. The shoot went on for four weeks and each episode involved shooting for two days straight.” Her vibrant canapes blew the judges away and there has been no looking back since.

On the cook-book trail

Chetna’s earliest memories of the kitchen come from her childhood, when she would watch her mother cook, never once imagining that it would be her own profession one day. Later on, as she explored the kitchen in her own right, she found that she truly enjoyed the process of baking and cooking – it relaxed her. “I enjoy every step, from cooking to cleaning up afterwards. Feeding the people I love and watching them enjoy the food is very rewarding.” These personal experiences have found their way into The Cardamom Trail, Chetna’s first recipe-book.

Soon after emerging as a semi-finalist from the Great British Bake Off 2014, the Indian chef, who was now more confident in herself, made a pitch for her debut book, The Cardamom Trail. Described by the Evening Standard as "a sumptuously styled cookbook (that) brings to life Chetna's background in fashion and recipes infused with fragrant Indian spices," the book covers cakes, pies, tarts and breads. There's also information on Indian spices, scattered generously across the pages, made compelling by a warm narrative style that includes Chetna's own childhood memories. “The show gave me the confidence to experiment with Indian flavours and western baking. It also gave me a platform for my book.”

Two years in the making, The Cardamom Trail was published in 2016 and “is loosely based on what I did on the show,” the Indian chef says. “I knew Indian food as I grew up with it, and I love western bakes and I thought, why not combine those two and create something new and different. And that is what I tried to bring out.”

Since then, Chetna has published five more, with her 2020 book, Chetna's 30-minute Indian: Quick and Easy Everyday Meals receiving a great response. "We all have busy lives but that doesn’t mean we don’t want delicious food at the end of the day. I see people across the world learning from my book, which offers simple recipes.”

Finding fame on YouTube

Apart from working on her book, she runs a YouTube channel called Food With Chetna. If you browse through her food channel, you will come across very simple, easy recipes, even for the biryani! "I started my YouTube channel after I finished writing my first book and the idea was to just share my everyday food with the audience."

The channel is mostly dedicated to vegetarian food and there is a reason. "We are vegetarian for six days a week at home, which is why those recipes dominate my YouTube channel,” the Indian chef explains. Her channel has over 200k subscribers.
Despite being a well-known name, running a food channel and writing cookbooks, her own restaurant has never figured in the plan. "Restaurants are not for me, really; it's not the kind of work I want to do. I just love cooking and baking."

Family time

Both her kids enjoy Chetna's YouTube channel. In fact, after the first lockdown in 2020 because of the pandemic, her kids (age 10 and 12) started filming her YouTube videos. "They play a big part in my channel. My husband is a doctor and a huge support to me." When she’s not baking or cooking, you will likely find her at the gym. "A bit of exercise is what I enjoy in my downtime. I also love gardening, so now that we are in spring, I like to spend a lot of my time in the garden," she wraps up.

"When I received the e-mail about my selection, I could not believe it for a moment. This award shows the importance of energy efficiency improvement and reducing emissions. I am proud of the contributions I have made to technologies that would improve the environment. Also, I have travelled to about 60 countries giving seminars on various topics at universities and conferences. It is humbling to recognise how many people contributed to my success, expecting nothing in return. 'It takes a village' is very true in my case, and I am fortunate that my village included some of the most encouraging and inspiring engineers in the field," he shares with Global Indian.

Currently a Distinguished Professor of Engineering at the University of Houston, Dr Rajashekara wishes to pass on all the knowledge he has gained in the last three decades to new-age engineers to ensure that the evolution of science and technology never stops. "After 35 years of working in the world's well-known Corporations, including ABB, GM, and Roll-Royce, I am very happy to be in the academic field. I am making use of every opportunity to educate and train the next generation of engineers. In a way, I worked all my life to be a professor and train others even when I was in the working industry," the scholar says.

A humble start

Born in a small village called Devarayasamudram in Karnataka, Dr. Rajashekara was a very bright student. Talking about his early life, the scholar says that while his parents were not very well-educated, they always encouraged him and his siblings to excel at school. "I think childhood is a fascinating time. My mother took care of us in the village as my father had to work in a town about 100-km away. He visited us about once a month. I had two elder brothers - one became a civil engineer and the other a medical doctor, both of whom are retired now. My parents did not have any formal education. My father could read and write a little Kannada, and my amma couldn't read either. But they valued education and wanted us siblings to do good well in life," shares the scholar.

After finishing his 10th standard from a Kannada-medium school, Dr. Rajashekara moved to Bangalore (now Bengaluru) for further education. "It was quite a difficult time. I didn't know a word of technical English, and the Bengaluru college was an English medium. While growing up in the village, I learned five languages - Kannada, Telugu, Hindi, Sanskrit, and English. In my professional career, I attempted to learn German, French, Spanish, Chinese, and Japanese. Now I can still manage German, but not the other four," laughs the scholar.

Passionate about learning more regarding the developments in the technology field, Dr. Rajashekara pursued a bachelor's degree in Engineering from Indian Institute of Science in 1971 and graduated in 1974. He soon started working at Cutler-Hammer and then Debikay Electronics, entering the field of power electronics. "I worked on thyristor drives for paper and rolling mills and learned that a solid foundation in the basic elements of engineering is a requisite for real-world practical systems," he says.

However, just one year later, his pursuit of knowledge brought him back to academics. "Even though I had finished my undergraduate degree, when I got a chance to do the graduate course in electrical engineering from the Indian Institute of Science, I couldn't turn it down." The scholar went on to earn a master's and later a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from IISc, during which time he also served as the Senior Scientific Officer/Asst. Professor at the institution. "I worked under the supervision of Prof. Vithayathil. He was the first to start a power electronics research programme in India, and his guidance strengthened my skills in power electronics," the scholar reminisces.

The world of machines

Working as a faculty member at IISc, which is one of the leading scientific institutions in the country, opened several doors for the scholar throughout his career. He shares, "While at the institution, I got the opportunity to work for two years at ABB with Dr. Stemmler, who became my role model. Later, I met Mr. Schoenholzer of Neu Technikum Buchs, Switzerland, who taught me how to design and build inverters. I can only tell you how thrilling it was to witness a three-phase 6-kVA thyristor inverter working when I turned it on for the first time."

In 1986, the scholar moved to Canada after the insistence of his friend Prof. Rajagopalan and joined the University of Quebec. After working there for a year, Dr. Rajashekara went to the United States of America to work for Viteq Corporation. During the same time, he became a member of the IEEE and the IEEE Industry Applications Society (IAS). "I worked with Viteq for close to three years, where I learned a lot from my bosses. In 1989, I joined the Delco Remy division of General Motors (GM) and started working on the electric vehicle (EV) programme. I believe this about two decades before the public even got to know what electronic vehicles were. Right now electric vehicles make up only about three percent of car sales worldwide. But, we project that number will top 50 percent by 2035. The future looks bright," he smiles.

"It was quite an exciting time. The technology we worked on led to the commercial version of EVs called the GM EV1. This experience formed the foundation for my future contributions in transportation electrification, for which I later received several awards, including being elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2012," the scholar adds.

Building an exciting future

His tenure at GM not only helped him strengthen his research work but also provided him an opportunity to work on the energy programmes with several other countries. Dr. Rajashekara joined Rolls-Royce Corporation in 2006, where he became involved with yet another exciting technological project. "I worked on more electric aircraft (MEA) projects. This next-generation technology truly fascinated me. The MEA concept helps with aircraft performance, decreasing operating costs, increasing dispatch reliability, and reducing gas emissions. MEAs quickly became the new focus of my career and also led to my interest in working on flying cars, combining the technologies of automotive, aircraft systems, and power conversion systems. Something I am still working on," he informs.

Excited about the future of the transportation industry, the scholar finds tremendous promise in this next frontier. He says, "EVs have been around for about 100 years now, and the improvement in technology is making it possible for people to use these vehicles. I see flying cars and Vertical Take-off and Landing (VTOL) aircraft taking the same track of steady progress. They might first be introduced as air taxis. For example, you will be able to walk to the nearest launch center to take a flying taxi to the airport and skip the city traffic to reach there faster. There are numerous opportunities in this arena, people just need to explore them."

Even though he was climbing up the corporate ladder at big technology companies, one dream that never left him was that of becoming a teacher. And thus, following that path, Dr. Rajashekara first joined the University of Texas at Dallas and is now working with the University of Houston since 2016. "Even as a child I always wanted to become a teacher, and I was good at it too. While I like researching and working on new technology, I really enjoy helping students or colleagues find success in their lives or their professions. I came from a small village in India and grew up in a house that was smaller than my current office, living there with my mother and two brothers. In addition to leaving behind a better world, I would like to help those around me realise how far they can go if they deploy a tremendous resolve to accomplish their goals," says the scholar.

This involves helping set up AI governance programmes and working closely with product and engineering teams to enable trustworthy AI features in our products.” The 34-year-old has had a storied career supporting product launches for the iPad, AirTag, and AirPods at Apple. A lawyer at heart

Growing up, Smita looked up to her accomplished grandfather, K.R. Sivaramakrishnan, who made a huge impact on the world through his work at the United Nations and who remains her role model.

Reminiscing about her growing-up years, the lawyer says, “I was raised in a middle-class home in New Delhi with hopes of becoming a journalist growing up. As I started to get older, I realised that while journalists can report on important news and highlight important issues, as a lawyer, I might be in a position to also solve some of those issues. That led me to law school, and the rest is history.”

She left India in 2013 to study law at UC Berkeley Law, which has the best intellectual property and technology law courses in the world, and it was in those classes that she found her passion for technology and artificial intelligence. “The thing I remember and miss most fondly is the luxury I had back then to be able to question the law, question policy, and study the philosophical underpinnings of why and how certain laws came to be,” she recalls.

Very early on in her career, the lawyer got the opportunity to work on some incredible deals and transactions. As a lawyer at Kirkland & Ellis and Cooley LLP, she worked on several high-profile deals; the most notable one was assisting her client Apple with its acquisition of Shazam, an application that can identify music based on a short sample played using the microphone on the device. It was a significant landmark in the landscape of artificial intelligence in audio and gave the lawyer great exposure as well as recognition.

Working with AI

As someone who works with AI every day, what are the things one should watch out for while embracing it? She explains. “Artificial intelligence governance includes many facets that are beyond the law. It includes ensuring that AI is rights-affirming, protects the vulnerable (such as children) against manipulation, and is safe for use. The biggest risks in AI stem from data, the collection of the data, and the eventual use of this data. Therefore, data privacy and data protection are crucial parts of AI governance.”

Given the power of technology, the world needs to be mindful of balancing AI innovation with principles such as privacy by design, data minimisation, transparency, accountability, and fairness. The lawyer agrees, adding, “Developing artificial intelligence in this safe and trustworthy manner will ensure that companies retain customer trust.”

Smita is a part of the IEEE AI Policy Committee and has helped draft position statements on AI, including responses to the National AI Advisory Committee and the USPTO. She will be part of working groups at the Biden-Harris US AI Safety Consortium through IEEE. Given her expertise in IP and AI, the lawyer was appointed to the Technology Committee at CITED (California Initiative on Technology and Democracy), a think tank focused on fighting the harms of AI-generated misinformation and its impact on elections and our democracy.

A modern-day lawyer

The archaic perception of a lawyer being solely in charge of writing legal briefs is fading fast. Today, lawyers need to convey their value to their clients and how they can be catalysts for faster innovation. They are now accepted as business partners and even technical experts in terms of intellectual property and data governance.

Smita agrees and adds, “As a lawyer involved in technology transactions, such as software development agreements or technology transfer agreements, I need to understand the scientific basis of the technologies involved. This has given me a ton of experience in software and the industry. I am now given a seat at the table on critical business and product decisions.”

The lawyer hope is to continue spearheading and fighting for innovations in responsible and safe AI while being balanced against the incredible business potential AI promises.

An Indian at heart

Though she is based in the US, Smita says that she has never really felt disconnected from India. She states, “I still celebrate all my favorite festivals, enjoy wearing saris, and am always up for some pani-puri at our local Indian grocery stores. I also visit India often; on my last trip, I explored the Indian islands, the Andamans. It was an amazing experience.”

For Indians abroad, she says that our roots and culture are our biggest strengths. “We are exposed to so much diversity in India; many of us speak several languages and are very adaptable to different cuisines and cultures. It prepares us well to assimilate in a foreign country. It’s important to convey to a foreign market how your unique background can be a force for achievement,” she advises.

Finding the right balance

As someone who has an extremely busy professional life, the young professional knows exactly what helps her refocus and recover: time with family and friends, exercise, and spending time with nature. The lawyer smiles and says, “I like to read books by Nassim Nicolas Taleb and Daniel Kahneman when I want something to ponder. But when I want to truly relax, I always spring for a book by P.G. Wodehouse. Our home is always running short of bookshelves because we have a terrible (and wonderful) habit of hoarding books.”

Giving her best every single day in every single task, small or big, it is easy to understand why the lawyer is making a mark—because she does everything with her passion and unbridled joy of giving it to her best!

When she first appeared on Student of the Year (2012), no one could have imagined that Alia Bhatt would be able to pull off a strong character like Gangubai Kathiawadi on screen. But she did, and how!

Dragging the audiences, who had lost the appetite for movies in the theatre, out of their houses, Gangubai broke several records and won millions of hearts. Narrating the story of the famed brothel madam of Kamathipura, Gangubai Kathiawadi, the movie takes audiences through the old and rustic lanes of Mumbai that people might not want to go to, even today. Of course, as with any other Bhansali production, the film is shot on beautiful sets that transport you back in time to the 50s and 60s in India, with on-point styling of all the characters in the movie. With the audiences - in India and abroad - pouring in love for the movie and the leading actress, it seems like Gangubai Khatiawadi might give tough competition to other movies on the Oscars list.

Not a single person who left the theatre after witnessing this masterclass movie can deny that it was an absolute visual treat! Deemed one of the biggest successes of the Karnataka movie industry, Kantara portrays a tale set in three very different eras - 1847, 1970, and 1990 - with a beautiful amalgamation of action, thrill, faith, and mythology. Set deep in the local folklore, director Rishab has managed to narrate this story of ignorance and misunderstanding in a colourful and visually engrossing manner.

The movie's cinematography is so assured and kinetic that it doubles up as a performance. Its powerful imagination made it one of the most-watched Kannada movies in the Hindi-speaking states of India, of all time. Breaking the language barrier, people in the northern parts of India were seen waiting patiently outside theatre box offices to buy their Kantara tickets.

The Kashmir Files

Cast: Anupam Kher, Mithun Chakraborty, Pallavi Joshi, and Darshan Kumar

While some called it disturbing, many Indians agreed that this film was as close to reality as it can get. Set in the realities of an event yet to be addressed on an international level, The Kashmir Files might prove to be very difficult for the Oscar Jury to ignore. Retelling the stories of lakhs of Hindus who were displaced from various parts of Jammu and Kashmir in the early-1990s, the movie managed to propel an alternative view of the Kashmir issue.

The director, Vivek Agnihotri, narrative triggers varied emotions coupled with some of the finest performances, and emotionally moving scenes. While Kashmiri Pandits continue to hope for justice even after over 30 years, the film attempts to document the ordeal of these displaced families with authenticity and not just for a cinematic recreation. Characters in The Kashmir Files are nothing short of ‘real people’. The way they emote on screen makes you feel their pain, leaving a lump in your throat. Anupam Kher as Pushkar Nath delivered by far his strongest and most convincing performance.
