Raj Patel: Indian-American winemaker made heads turn at the US State dinner

Raj Patel is an Indian-American winemaker and the owner of Patel Winery in Napa Valley, California. As a first-generation wine producer, he made history by becoming the first Indian to obtain a liquor license for winemaking in Napa Valley. His journey into winemaking began with an internship at Robert Mondavi Winery, where his passion for wine blossomed, leading him to fulfill his dream of owning a winery. Patel Winery gained significant recognition after serving Patel Red Blend 2019 at the US State dinner for Prime Minister Modi at the White House. The winery offers four different wines, including Sauvignon Blanc and Napa Valley Cabernet, and exports its wines to various countries worldwide.

(September 3, 2023) Amid a lavish spread of crisped millet cakes, summer squashes, marinated millet and grilled corn kernel salad and stuffed portobello mushrooms, stood a case of Patel Red Blend 2019 – a red wine – that grabbed attention at the US State dinner for PM Modi. Owned by a Gujarati Raj Patel, a first-generation wine producer, Patel Winery was invited to serve at the White House. “It was surreal and an honour. It’s something that very few are privileged to do,” Raj tells Global Indian. Started in 2007 in Napa Valley with 100 cases of a 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon, Patel Winery now sells 1000 cases of four wines, and is world renowned, thanks to the US State dinner. “Over the years, our wine has grown so well and received so many reviews. We are happy to have added any accolade by serving our wine at the State dinner. It’s something that not everyone gets.”

Two months since the US State dinner, Patel Winery has found global recognition. While they export in Japan, South Korea, UK, Taiwan and New Zealand, the awareness about the wine has spread far and wide now. “For everyone who didn’t know the wine existed, now know about it. Especially in India, and now there’s that knowledge which is a nice thing.”

Gujarati family adjusting in a new land

Born in the town of Pati in Gujarat, Raj’s first brush with America was at the age of six when his family relocated to the country in 1972. Growing up in the US was nothing short of a challenge for this Gujarati family for whom getting even basic things like eggplant, garlic or ginger was difficult. “You couldn’t find them at a regular grocery store, you had to go to a Chinese store to get it. In Berkeley, there was only one Indian store to support the daily needs of all the Indians in California. The world and the island feel very small when you are the only one of that type on the island,” says Raj, calling America “very different 40 years ago”.

However, he is quick to add that things have changed multifold in the last few decades, thanks to inclusivity and diversity. “The Americans love Indians, who are very well accepted in this country. Indians have completely adapted to the term when in Rome, do as the Romans do. They have completely adapted more so than other cultures have. Indians now make one of the largest contingents in the US. As a matter of fact, I won’t be surprised that in the next 10 years, Indians would be one of the biggest proportions.”

Still when he got into the business of wine making in 2007, Raj was the first Indian to get a liquor license to produce wine. “Even as a vintner, I was the first Asian person in the Napa Valley. But now it has diversified as we have a couple of Chinese and Korean people, a gentleman from Pakistan and someone from Singapore,” reveals Raj, adding that Napa Valley has an inclusive environment. It’s only in the last 5-6 years that more Indians have ventured into wine making in Napa Valley, however, the large number of customers continue to be Caucasians. “There are country clubs that I had gone to 20 years ago they probably wouldn’t even let me in, and now we do winemaker dinners there. The world has changed.”

Passion for winemaking

The passion and love for wine began when as he stood in the sprawling vineyard of the Robert Mondavi Winery in the Napa Valley for his internship. “I had finished my BioChem degree at the University of California, and they were looking for someone for lab tech.” What began as a “necessity to earn a few extra bucks during summer break” turned into a life-long passion after being exposed to tasting some of the best wines and meeting the Mondavi family. “They told me I have a great palate and I should pursue this. It was so out of the box that I didn’t even think about it. Over the years, I collected wine and visited wineries in Napa.” Coming from the dry state of Gujarat, he had no idea how to get into the wine making business as a young lad. However, he wrote it down as a goal in his diary that he wanted to own a winery by the age of 55, something he accomplished at 40.

But before translating his dream into reality, he worked for 19 years in Bank of America “on the mortgage and credit side.” “I have a strong exposure to the finance world but I did stay with the goal. I was somewhere convinced that at some point I was going to buy a winery.” It was while working in corporate America that the Patel Winery happened. “I was starting a winery and working at the credit side, and it was long hours doing both things at the same time. I was actually both until a month ago. Now I am going to focus on the winery and start a mortgage bank.”

Luck is what happens when opportunity meets preparation, and Raj prepared himself well in these years. From tasting wines to collecting wines to visiting vineyards, he never missed a chance to tell people that he has plans of opening a winery in the near future. A business meeting at a brewery in Baltimore helped align the right people, and assisted him in putting the winery together. “If you tell enough people what you want to do, you will eventually run into people that will help you. It’s one of the key things – having confidence in what you want to do. There are times when you will succeed and times when you won’t but the key is to have a plan, dream or idea and stay focussed. Tell the people what you want without giving away the secret sauce. People will help you.”

A wine – class apart

The right assistance helped him establish Patel Winery in 2007, and in a few years, the combined magic of him as an owner and that of his winemaker Julien Fayard, helped catapult Patel Wines to new heights. It’s their attention to detail that sets Patel Wine apart from its competitors. “The wines that we make even by American standards or European standards, the quality is in the top 1 percent. You look at the reviews, you are talking about some of the toughest critics that review these things and we are in that top 1 percent. Once you try it, it may change your bias forever,” says Raj who did not hesitate to put Patel on the wine. “A lot of Patels love the fact that I did that with the name.” Though many advised him against it initially, Raj says it helped “elevate things” for Patel Winery. But it was an uphill task initially. No one showed up on his table at wine tasting sessions as most people gravitated towards known brands. But slowly it was the name that drew many curious wine tasters to his table, and “they liked what they tasted.” “Today, when I start pouring, there are five-six people deep waiting to taste the Patel Wine because they want to know what is new. The gratification that you get from all the hard work over the years is amazing.”

Raj is happy that Indians in the US now have clung to it. “A lot of Indians buy an exorbitant amount of Patel Wines,” says the winemaker, revealing that many Indian-Americans are into collecting wines. “Collecting wine, holding wine and knowing about wine even in India has become very suave, especially among the women. In many cultures, women drinking whiskey or beer is frowned upon but wine is never frowned upon. In fact, it’s considered sophisticated. It gives a sense of elegance, and that’s something that they have here (US) gravitated towards too.”

Two decades in the business of winemaking made Raj patient. “What we make doesn’t happen overnight.” However, having temperament is something that he considers vital in this business. Having had proposals to make champagne and diversify into other liquor, he decided to stuck to his core. “We make the wines we know. In a perfect world, I would have made just one wine. But we only make four different types of wine – Sauvignon Blanc, Red Wine (which was served at the White House), a Napa Valley Cabernet and Coombsvilla Cabarnet – which is great because it keeps us focussed, and people see that in our quality.”

Raj, who loves skiing and hiking, eventually plans to buy his own vineyard and have his own tasting room. Looking for expansion, he wants to grow the winery to about 3000 cases. “At some point, we will also come up with other products.”

Coming from a lineage where his uncle’s brother was one of the first Patels in the US, Raj is glad that happy to be carrying forward the baton of “the firsts” in America. “In 1923, my uncle’s brother was only 17 when he came to America, exactly 100 years ago. Imagine coming to a country in the early 1900s, when you had no idea how the outside world looks like. He was brave to do so. His journey has been documented in a book called The Pioneer. In 1958, his brother came to the US, and my maternal aunt who called our family in 1972.” With firsts come a lot of challenges, but Raj like his lineage didn’t bow down and created a name for himself. “People say Patel Wine was served at the White House, trust me there have been some 18 tough years behind it,” he signs off.

(February 9, 2022)  Turning adversity into an advantage is a winning formula that Vandana Suri, founder, Taxshe enhances. The global Sustainable Development Goals and Her awardee (2019) for her entrepreneurial venture, an exclusive all-women driver-on-demand cab service in Bengaluru and NCR, seeks to empower women. My mother would say, ‘You have already become Rajni, now stop watching it!’” she chuckles.

Empowering women forward

Starting Taxshe in 2014, Vandana put out her first post on Facebook, asking people whether they could provide references of lady drivers for an all-women taxi service. “To my utter surprise, the post went viral,” says Suri, overwhelmed with 3,000 calls.

The challenge was no woman with driving skills was willing to become a taxi driver. Women from poorer sections could have, but they did not know how to drive. “I became the first driver of Taxshe. I started a chauffeur model, drove other’s cars, picking and dropping their children. It was amazing that parents were so at peace with the idea of a lady driving their children around,” she smiles.

Since 2015, Taxshe, that was incidentally triggered by a cab rape incident where the victim’s statement, “If a woman would have been driving me, this would have not happened,” deeply affected Vandana. Women were unsafe, and Taxshe was the answer. “Another major concern were the lack of toilets making it a non-women-friendly profession. So, I designed a flexible business model around ladies where there was no threat from passengers as they were driving children, and they had the luxury of working in the vicinity of their homes. It was business-friendly too as we got contracts for the whole year thus a yearly income,” she adds.

Spreading the word

Reaching out to slums, talking to women and families, after devoting six months to a year training, she has women professional drivers. “When I sent them for training, they were ridiculed. Empowering them, I started training them myself. Over the past seven years, we must have trained 350-400 girls,” says Vandana.

She likens the service (pre-Covid) to being oxygen masks for children, corporate women and female late-night flight passengers. Then Covid wiped all these avenues.

Vandana then started a new business vertical – the Taxshe Breakfree that addressed fear of infection and women being stuck at home. “Just like the actor in Titanic who floated across even when the ship sank, we were able to sail across the pandemic. Invariably, we have a very high rating whether it is Taxshe or Breakfree,” she beams.

When the drive became a movement

Getting in touch with educated women who had lost jobs, she roped them in as franchisee partners, and trained them in training others. An out-of-work 62-year-old school principal with 35 years experience (driving) joined in. “We call her super naani. We have other franchisee partners too who have lost high-paying jobs. They are happy to join Taxshe Breakfree,” adds the social entrepreneur.

Then, another vertical - women in mobility business (WOMB) was started. Engaging women with a strong network to motivate others to join Taxshe Breakfree, she adds, “They are akin to a business development arm, and earn revenue. WOMB women are like backend buddies of franchise partners. We have four franchise partners, and have trained 300 +women so far. We are incubating more women under WOMB. By April, we plan to rope in 25 more.”

Vandana’s mother is her backend buddy and critic. “When my mother heard that I was starting a cab business, she fell off her chair. Later when my brother Sushil joined in, as co-founder, she was assured that I must be doing well enough for him to join,” laughs Vandana. Her mother is proud of Suri’s award - chosen out of 1,200 applicants. “She wonders when I’ll learn to cook,” grins Vandana, a mother of a teenage son.

On rare off days, painting is her go to, “I will pursue it after retirement,” she chuckles. Of course, music and thumkas aside, she admits to being the first on a dance floor, and the last off it.

Chop Chop Boys and SingleSisterz are her new nascent ventures - One trains young lads how to cook and the other helps single women rent together. “We wanted to work on an alternate family structure so that someone is there to take care of children,” signs off this serial entrepreneur with her pulse on social upliftment.

From India to USA

The business consultant comes from a hard-working family without much access to education. At a young age, he learned discipline. He used to open the family shoe shop at seven in the morning, attended to customers before his brothers came in, and then went to school, and would return directly from there to the shop at four in the evening. When there were no customers, he used to do his homework.

They still have the shoeboxes where I used to solve my Arithmetic work. That was where I learned how to diagnose a problem. I learned to work hard but I also learned that I loved business. It was this passion that fuelled my work ethic.

After completing engineering at Banaras Hindu University in 1959, he worked for some time in India. His bosses recognised his business talent, and looking at his leadership skills encouraged him to develop it through further studies. This motivated the young engineer to earn an MBA and a doctorate degree as a Baker Scholar from Harvard Business School, from where he graduated with distinction.

(June 16, 2024) Chef Mandaar Sukhtankar's career in hospitality began as if by chance, when he brought home a college application form for hotel management. He began at The Park, New Delhi, where he honed his skills and later expanded into European cuisine under seasoned mentors. After completing his studies at the Institute of Hotel Management in Pusa, New Delhi, he took up the offer of a Management Trainee position at The Park, New Delhi, which eventually pioneered the concept of boutique hotels in India.

Gaining Mastery in European Cuisine

Chef Mandaar Sukhtankar, in an exclusive with Global Indian, reveals how his expertise in European and Italian cuisine increased organically. “Back in 1997, The Park, New Delhi, was the first hotel to launch a Spanish restaurant, Las Meninas, in India. Chef Pedro was specially flown in from Spain to helm the restaurant and it was with him that I had my first brush with European cuisine.  Four years later, The Park acquired the Quality Inn Kensington Terrace in Bengaluru (now The Park, Bengaluru) and revamped it into the bright, colourful and eclectic property that it is today.

“They commissioned Sir Terrence Conran to design this boutique hotel where he also designed its iconic Italian restaurant ‘I.t-alia’.  I was selected to head the kitchens and that was where I learned Italian cuisine from the acclaimed master Antonio Carluccio.”

In 2001, he was awarded the IH&RA (International Hotels and Restaurants Association) scholarship. Being one of only two Indians selected for it, this was a prestigious scholarship that had 80 applicants worldwide, out of which only 12 were selected. This special exposure scholarship at the Johnson and Wales University campus in Providence, Rhode Island, USA gave him a free pass to attend any class being conducted in the university. From oenology, chocolate sculpting, ice carving and store management to mixology and buffet displays, it was an unparalleled exposure to the nuances of the business.

Oftentimes, learning curves on the job are the best way to gain expertise in a field, and once Chef Mandaar completed his scholarship, his employers sent him to London to train further at Antonio Carluccio’s The Neal Street Restaurant. Carluccio was famous for his chain of restaurants in London.

“I trained with him for two months in his restaurant, where I learnt Italian cuisine and kitchen operations in depth and later, worked with him closely for over ten years when he consulted for us in Bengaluru and beyond. He, truly, was my mentor and guru; a walking encyclopaedia of Italian cuisine.”

In 2005 Chef Mandaar Sukhtankar attended a course at The Italian Culinary Institute for Foreigners in Costigliole d’Asti. This is where he learnt more nuanced aspects of Italian food, from choosing a good olive oil to cheese making, wines, desserts and breads and other aspects of Italian gastronomy.

New Launches to Aussie Cricketers

Chef Mandaar’s career has several milestones worth mentioning. He was instrumental in the launch of the Chennai, Navi Mumbai and Hyderabad hotels for The Park group. During his illustrious tenure with them, he was instrumental in launching close to 20 restaurants, bars and nightclubs. He was a part of the pre-opening squad for The Park, Hyderabad, and worked at their flagship hotel from 2010 to 2017. During this time, he also authored the popular Sunday food page for the Deccan Chronicle. On the persuasion of his PR manager, he wrote his first book, Romancing the Chicks (2017) published by Westland. The book was a compilation of his writings with added anecdotes and recipes and a true testament to his storytelling skills.

Then, a serendipitous series of events, stemming from his son’s love for playing cricket, led to him being appointed as the Team Chef for Cricket Australia, where he travelled with the Australian team on its India tour in 2017.

He recalls, “Touring teams find it hard to adjust to Indian food and many players often fall sick.  My role was to ensure that the players ate safe food and stayed match-fit. I policed what they ate. I’d be up at 5.30 in the morning, checking the breakfast buffets and advising the team what to eat and what to skip.  If I wasn’t sure of the water source, I’d ensure their food was cooked with mineral water! I would inspect the hygiene levels of the kitchens and catering units, sometimes strip down the kitchen for a thorough cleaning and ensure that the food was cooked to a safe level for consumption. Sometimes, I would train the local hotel chefs to make dishes that the players liked but didn’t get to eat often on tour – from Bolognaise to schnitzels, anything that the players wished was on par for the course. If I found the food to be poor; I’d advise them not to eat any of it and just make do with Greek yoghurt and protein bars! Some players were vegan, and I got them to taste the local food – like the Zhunka Bhakar in Nagpur and Litti Chokha in Ranchi, replacing ghee with oil. They loved it!  The touring team had some legends of the game like Steve Smith, David Warner, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Aaron Finch, Adam Zampa, Kane Richardson and Travis Head and they were such a fun bunch. And the best and the most gratifying part for me was that no one fell ill on my watch!”

Delving into Regional Cuisine

In his current role as the Corporate Chef for Total Environment Hospitality, Chef Mandaar’s role is to helm the expansion of their restaurants and microbreweries. Windmills, their flagship brand, is one of the first and finest microbreweries to have opened doors in India. Brewing American-style ales, Windmills has an erudite vibe with its book-lined walls and classy music. The food is a big draw for its nuanced classicism and innovative takes. The music holds centre-stage as it hosts musicians of high pedigree – think Grammy nominees, a variety of jazz genres generously sprinkled with classical and other contemporary world music as well.

Having joined them in 2017, he has spearheaded the expansion of Windmills by opening one at the Bengaluru International Airport (2018) and more recently, a Windmills in Dallas, Texas (2021) – making it the first Indian microbrewery brand to venture abroad. Spread over two floors, it can seat 350 guests and is one of the largest by sheer brewing capacity. In the pipeline is another one soon to be launched in Hyderabad.

The other brand that he is passionate about is the multiple award-winning regional cuisine restaurant – Oota. In Bengaluru, Oota is probably the only restaurant which has a menu that spans all of Karnataka. Quite literally so, as the team that worked on the project travelled 20,000 kms across the state to understand culture, tradition and food while interacting with several communities. The recipes gathered during these travels form the edifice on which Oota stands.

Taking Oota across South India

Having established Oota as a strong brand for regional cuisine in Karnataka, he is now excited about taking the brand to Hyderabad where Oota will showcase the cuisine of Andhra Pradesh, Hyderabad and Telangana.  In his words, “Primary research is gold! We are covering the entire length and breadth of these states to uncover hidden gems and bring out the regional flavours in their full glory. Regional food is increasingly finding favour; Indian chefs are digging out traditional recipes and giving them a unique touch through presentation. There is also the trend of bringing Western sensibilities to Indian food, but I believe that you only need to polish what needs polishing, otherwise keep it simple – the way it has been.”

Tee time: Bharath Arvind is making golf accessible through The Golfer’s Edge Chennai

Arvind grew up in Zambia in the late 80s and early 90s and spent his formative years at the International School of Lusaka (ISL), which shaped his personality and ability to adapt to different cultures and people. Returning to India in his eighth grade, his early years in Zambia helped him to make friends with a variety of kids from different nationalities and races.

“That in turn helped me to make friends fast when I came back to school in Mumbai (AVM Bandra). I credit the exposure I received during those early years in Zambia for my ability to be comfortable in any environment I am thrown into. While we were in Zambia, sports played a key role in my life, again thanks to my parents who encouraged me and afforded me the opportunity to learn tennis, football, and golf amongst other activities,” he tells Global Indian.

Leaving home

On his return to India, he continued to play golf at the Bombay Presidency Golf Club, where his parents were members. He often played club tournaments, and eventually, his talent for the game earned him a sports and academic scholarship at the Waldorf College in Iowa, USA.

“It was a fantastic experience,” Arvind recalls. “When you are on your own for the first time, and far away from home, you must learn to manage your time and life. It teaches you to be independent and take responsibility for every action and decision,” he says, adding that the experience helped him grow up much faster than his peers, who had remained back home in India. After graduated from the Waldorf College, he moved to Drake University, Iowa and did an MBA at Thunderbird School of Global Management (Arizona State University).

Sadly, Arvind lost his father when he was a student in the US, and watched his mother take over the reins. Her strength and determination became a great source of inspiration to him, as he ensured that he finished college, and never let him give up on his hopes or dreams of entrepreneurship. “She has been a pillar of support in all respects (emotional, financial, and spiritual) and has been an immense inspiration to me on what it takes to be focussed, determined and to always help others in need,” he says. He imbibed her determination and focus, and also learned how to be a self starter. “I think one needs to be very self-motivated if you want to succeed in anything in life. You must be able to pick yourself up and show up every day no matter what the situation,” Arvind adds.

The corporate life

Post his studies he pursued a career in PR working in the US and India with agencies and corporates in their marketing and communications/ corporate communications functions. “I eventually pursued my passion for golf and became the editor of Golf Digest India thanks to working with Rishi Narain, a stalwart in the Indian golf industry,” says Arvind. Narain’s company had taken on the publishing rights for the magazine from CondeNast and for Arvind, the job was a dream come true.

From there, he ventured out on his own to found a consulting practice for marketing communications to help startups and small businesses with their marketing needs. “Around 2017 I was keen to explore migrating to Canada to determine whether that would be a good fit for my family. I briefly migrated to Canada for a year and a half to explore the opportunity and eventually decided to come back to India and settle. The experience there was also very helpful to help me understand what my priorities were in life and what I needed to focus on,” he says.

Golfer's Edge Chennai

Golf in India has always been associated with the elite and is not necessarily very accessible. However, that is slowly changing as more driving ranges and facilities are opening up in different cities. However, to Arvind, indoor golf and golf simulators are the way forward, as they are an affordable option to make the sport more accessible to people.

“My partner, Hari Natarajan, started TeeTime Ventures in 2014 to install golf simulators in residential buildings, corporate offices, private homes, and other places,” Arvind explains. The two had first met during Arvind’s time with Golf Digest India, and have remained associated ever since. TeeTime Ventures has also enjoyed a good run, completing over 80 projects across the country. “Golfer’s Edge Chennai is our first company-owned centre and franchise with the prime objective of making golf more affordable and accessible to people. We want to introduce more folks to the game and Golfer’s Edge Chennai over the past one year has introduced well over 700 people to the game of golf in Chennai alone,” he says.

Lessons learned

He believes that the best way to handle challenges is by taking them head on, responding to it and not overreacting to it. “Try and understand the situation for what it is worth. There are multiple solutions to any challenge. How you react and respond is what matters. Sometimes the best way to deal with a challenge is to not do anything and give yourself some time to approach a solution with a calm mind and on another day,” he says. He believes that finding the right partner or co-founder is super critical in business.

“There needs to be a good match and a good mix of skill sets each one brings to the table. And there must be a great deal of comfort between the co-founders to be able to speak the truth and not have to worry about repercussions. If you trust one another then you know that either person is coming from a good place with the same goal in mind,” he says. In his free time, he plays golf, reads, travels, spends time with the family and works out to try and stay as fit as possible and is also learning the guitar. “We wish to have multiple centres across the country to be able to introduce more people to golf in a fun and exciting way. The next few years will be working towards that goal. Ultimately if we can inspire a new generation of golfers to compete at the top level globally and have them start their journeys at one of our centres, I believe that would make us proud,” he signs off.

Google’s $100 million man: YouTube names Neal Mohan as CEO

February 18, 2023) In 2011, Twitter was in turmoil. They needed someone to revamp the product and bring in advertisers - a chief product officer, essentially. Board member David Rosenblatt had just the man in mind: Neal Mohan. So, in 2013, Twitter made him an offer and it seemed like things were going according to plan. Then Neal said no. Google had written him a big, fat cheque - $100 million in stock options, to be exact.  Neal Mohan, the man described by Richard Frankel, his former boss, as a "high-end customer support representative," was now Silicon Valley's most valuable asset. And clearly, he has lived up to expectations. On February 17, when Susan Wojcicki announced that she was stepping down, Indian-American Neal Mohan was appointed as YouTube's new CEO. Life as YouTube's Chief Product Officer

He's more than earned his stripes. Ever since he took over as YouTube's Chief Product Officer in 2015, Neal has played a pivotal role in some of the company's top products. He is the driving force behind YouTube TV, YouTube Shorts, YouTube Premium (formerly Red), and YouTube Music.

"In a most fundamental way, my job is twofold. I'm responsible for all our products - the YouTube experience on mobile phones, desktops, laptops and large living room screens - everything that viewers use to connect with their favourite creators," he told Lew Later last year. Then, there "things that creators use - this includes YouTubers, musicians, artists and traditional media companies." Finally, there he is responsible for "trust and safety, community guidelines - the rules of the road, so to speak." Simply put, it comes down to "helping my teams make the best deicisions on behalf of that ecosystem. It includes our viewers, users, creators and advertisors."

Early life

Mohan was born in India in 1975 and moved to the US a few years later. "I had always been interested in technology, even before college," he said, in a 2022 interview with Greylock. "I always knew that working would computers would be my career path." His ambition took him to Stanford University, where he studied Electrical Engineering "and a lot of CS classes, basically."

He graduated from Stanford and entered the workforce at what he describes as a "pivotal moment." This was the start of the golden age in Silicon Valley - "the dawn of the internet, really. Netscape had just come out with its browsers and was a Silicon Valley startup. There were lots of companies excited about making the transition." It was a fortunate turn of events for him. "When you're able to start your career at the inflexsion of a big technology change, there are lots of interesting opportunities.

Mohan began his career as a 'management consultant, working with tech businesses and finding ways to bring this new technology, the 'internet' to Fortune 500 companies. He realised, "very quickly," that he wanted to be part of these startups himself. He did a short stint at Andersen Consulting (Accenture) and in 1997, So, he joined Net Gravity, kickstarting his career in the technology business. That company was acquired by advertising startup DoubleClick later that year. It's where he met David Rosenblatt. He played a pivotal role in Google's $3.1 billion acquisition of the company.

DoubleClick Inc.

This was the great revolution in democratising information. "It's about fundamentally powering the creation of and consumption of all this information," regardless of whether the user was on a low-speed dial-up in some corner of the world, or a high-speed connection in Silicon Valley. "You have access to the same technology," he said.

That's where DoubleClick Inc. came in - if information was to be provided to everyone with access to an internet connection, preferably for free, it needed a sustainable revenue model. The internet was a medium too, just like print or TV - and those ran on ads. DoubleClick was at the forefront of developing and providing Internet ad services, through technology products and services that were sold to ad agencies and the mass media. They went on to work with businesses like Microsoft, General Motors, Coca-Cola, Apple Inc, Nike and L'Oreal.

The Google acquisition

In 2003, he quit DoubleClick to return to Stanford University for an MBA. The company was having solvency troubles at the time. He asked Mohan to rejoin as soon as he was done with his MBA. The company was acquired by Google for $3.1 billion in 2007, with Mohan being a key driver of the deal. He joined Google a year later, in 2008.

Life at Alphabet Inc.

Having always worked at the intersection of media and technology, developing a roadmap for advertising models in the digital age, Mohan became invaluable to Google very quickly. Between 2008 and 2015, he served as a Senior VP of Display and Video Advertising.

He was pivotal to developing the company's ad products and helping to grow YouTube revenue. Mohan became a well-known name in Silicon Valley and when Twitter needed a new man to revamp their product, which was falling apart, they turned to the internet ads savant. Mohan has played an important role in some of Google's most important ad products, including AdWords, DoubleClick and Google Analytics. He was also responsible for the automation of buying and selling digital ad inventory."

Transforming YouTube

In 2015, Mohan joined Alphabet Inc subsidiary YouTube as its Chief Product officer. He has been responsible for the livestreaming service YouTube TV, YouTube Music, YouTube Premium and YouTube Shorts.

Under him, YouTube's creator economy boomed. In 2022, Indian YouTubers were contributing around Rs 6,800 crores annually to the country's GDP. "The creator economy in India is truly flourishing," Mohan remarked. The monetisation model changed the content creation site - as of 2019, there were two billion users on YouTube, watching 1 billion hours of videos every day. YouTube ad revenues were around $19.77 billion in 2020.

With Susan Wojcicki announcing her resignation to focus on her health and personal life, Mohan will take over as YouTube's fourth CEO.

Life at home

Mohan is married to Heema Sareem Mohan, who is a spokesperson for Democratic State Senator Joe Simitian. She specialises in reforming the juvenile justice system and education policies and does extensive non-profit work. Born and raised in New York, she mvoed to Silicon Valley to be with her husband.

The couple resides in the Bay Area, in one of San Francisco's most upscale localities, with their three kids.
