Plot twist: How Dev Raturi went from waiter to restaurateur to one of China’s best loved actors

(October 24, 2024) Dev Raturi fondly remembers his pahad in Uttarakhand, although nearly 20 years have passed since he last called it home. In 2005, armed with a job offer from a friend, and lots of dreams for his future, Raturi scraped funds together to buy himself a plane ticket to Beijing. As promised, he began his career as a waiter, serving food and wiping down tables at his friend’s restaurant and earning a meagre monthly salary of 1650 RMB.

Five years later, he was fluent in Mandarin, had a steady diet of Bruce Lee films, and had risen through the ranks to become general manager of a steakhouse. He went on to open his own restaurant chain, and in 2015, found the break he had been waiting for all his life – the chance to act in a film. Now, he has worked in over 20 films and web series, and still owns a chain of successful Indian restaurants. He is now such a popular name in China that his life story has found its way into a Chinese textbook.

The Global Indian, who has become a self-appointed cultural bridge between India and China, is a prominent member of a small-ish Indian diaspora comprising around 45,000, a mix of professionals, traders and students. Most of these people are located in major cities like Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. In Beijing, where Dev Raturi started his journey, Indian professionals are found in fields like IT, finance, and education. Additionally, Indian-owned businesses, including restaurants, play a key role in representing Indian culture.

Early Life: Leaving Home for Opportunity

Dev grew up in Kemriya-Saur, a village in Uttarakhand’s Tehri Garhwal district. His family lived off farming, and money was always tight. Like many young men from his background, he had to leave school early to help out. He moved to Delhi in the late 1990s, working a series of jobs—anything that paid the bills. But Dev wanted more than just to scrape by. He dreamed of making it big, especially in films. Inspired by Bruce Lee, he was fascinated by the world of cinema.

In 1998, he tried his luck in Bollywood. He auditioned, waited, and hoped, but it never clicked. Dev didn’t have the connections or the polish to break into an industry known for being tough on outsiders. After several years, it became clear he needed to find another path.

The Move to China: A Gamble That Paid Off

In 2005, a friend told him about a job opportunity in Beijing. It wasn’t glamorous—a waiter job at an Indian restaurant—but it was a chance to start fresh in a place where no one knew him, and where he might just find his break. “I remember everyone telling me I was making a mistake,” Dev said. “But I had to try something new. I felt stuck.”

The first job was as basic as it sounded. Dev’s salary was 1,650 yuan a month, barely enough to live on. The language barrier was huge, and he knew little about China beyond what he’d seen on TV. But this was where Dev’s stubbornness came in handy. He learned Mandarin on the job, listening carefully to how customers spoke and picking up phrases from his colleagues. By 2007, he had learned enough to be promoted to manager, and his salary rose significantly. “I was always good with people, and I think that’s what helped,” he said. “Even when I didn’t understand everything, I listened.”

By 2010, Dev had become the area director for a hospitality chain. He was responsible for multiple restaurants, handling operations and marketing. But he wasn’t satisfied with just being an employee. He saw the gap in how Indian culture was represented in China and thought he could do it better. He heard his Indian friends speak ill of China, and his Chinese friends’ unflattering opinions of India, and was hurt by both. However, he came to understand these prejudices came from ignorance, rather than any real malice or hatred. “I realised it is not an easy job being a proud Indian in China. So I thought I must fill this gap because there were very few Indian restaurants, but none of them present you with Indian culture, they just sell the food. I realised that no, this is not enough.”

Entrepreneurial Success: Building a Restaurant Chain

In 2013, Dev opened his first restaurant, Redfort, in Xi’an. This wasn’t just another Indian eatery. Dev wanted it to be an immersive experience of Indian culture, from the decor and music to the food and service. The restaurant became a hit, not just because of the food, but because it gave people something they hadn’t seen before—a glimpse into India. “We didn’t just sell food; we sold an experience,” Dev explained. “When people walked into Redfort, I wanted them to feel like they were in India, not just another restaurant.”

Redfort was successful enough that Dev expanded it to other cities. Over the next few years, he opened more branches across China, each one adding a little more to the experience. Today, he owns a chain of eight restaurants, as well as two Chinese restaurants specializing in local cuisine. His success earned him numerous media appearances, and in 2018, he was named one of the “Top 100 Entrepreneurs in Shaanxi.” His story even became part of a class 7 English textbook in Xi’an.

Breaking into Films: An Unexpected Twist

While his restaurants were thriving, Dev’s childhood dream of acting hadn’t disappeared. His big break came out of nowhere. In 2016, while preparing to open a new restaurant in Sichuan, he was approached by a director looking for an Indian actor for a small role in a Chinese film. “I didn’t think much of it,” Dev recalled. “I thought, why not? It had always been my dream.”

The film was a low-budget project, but it gave him a taste of what he had always wanted. The role wasn’t big, but it was enough to get him noticed. Over the next few years, Dev landed more roles in films and TV shows, playing a variety of characters. By 2019, he had appeared in over 20 productions, including “The Ark,” where he played an astronaut, and “My Roommate is a Detective,” a popular TV series. “I never thought I’d get to do this,” he said. “Acting was something I had given up on, but China gave me a second chance.”

Impact

Dev’s story is now well known, both in China and back home in India. He’s been featured on CCTV, Xinhua News, and other media platforms. His restaurants are popular not just for their food but for the cultural experience they offer. He regularly organizes events that showcase Indian music, dance, and festivals, making his restaurants more than just places to eat—they’re a way for people to learn about Indian culture. “I wanted to do more than just serve food,” he said. “I wanted to bridge a gap. There are so many misconceptions about India in China, and I wanted to change that.”

In 2018, Dev was recognized as one of the “Top 100 Entrepreneurs in Shaanxi,” and his achievements earned him roles such as Deputy Director of Foreign Affairs Committee of Xi’an Baoji Chamber of Commerce. Today, his story continues to inspire many, especially those who feel limited by their circumstances.

Dev is also planning to invest further in his home state of Uttarakhand. “I want to give back,” he said. “I’m working on a plan to open a business there, maybe something similar to what I’ve done in China. It’s important for me to contribute to where I came from.”

For Dev Raturi, success didn’t come the way he expected, but it came nonetheless. From waiting tables to running a chain of restaurants, from dreaming of Bollywood to acting in Chinese films, his journey is a reminder that sometimes, taking the unexpected route leads to the most surprising destinations.

His career path took a significant turn in 1981 when a little-known company called Microsoft came calling, recruiting him as its first Indian employee. He moved to Washington in the U.S. along with his wife and a little daughter. "When I joined Microsoft, it was a far cry from what it is today," Remala, who became the company’s first South Asian hire and one of its first 50 employees, recalled in an interview. “There were just a handful of employees, and we worked out of a tiny office in downtown Bellevue.”

One of his first experiences at Microsoft still stands out: “The first day itself, someone walked into my office and explained the project I’d be working on. I had to ask him who he was, and he said, ‘I’m Bill.’” That “Bill,” of course, was none other than Bill Gates, who would go on to shape the future of global technology. Remala reported directly to Gates for the next three years, and the informal, startup-like atmosphere made it possible for him to interact closely with the tech visionary.

“Bill was very approachable and lacked even the faintest streak of arrogance,” Remala said. “He liked people who worked hard and tried their best. I was one of those, and we had a great working relationship.” Remala noted that the significant Indian presence at Microsoft didn't start to be truly noticeable until the late 1980s.

Building Microsoft Windows from scratch

Remala’s work at Microsoft began with writing the original code for Windows 1.0 and continued through several key milestones, including Windows 2.0, MS Cobol, MS Office, OLE 1.0, OLE 2.0, Office 95, and Office 97. His tenure at the company was marked by both technical triumphs and grueling work hours. “In those early years, the work was so intense that some days I didn’t go home,” he shared, recalling how he only had a half-day off when his second daughter was born.

As Microsoft grew into a global tech giant, Remala’s contributions became essential to its core products. However, the fast-paced, ever-evolving nature of the company sometimes led to challenges. “We didn’t have the luxury of long-term planning. It wasn’t like today where you develop a thick manual and have teams of developers working on it for months. On a Wednesday morning, we’d be changing code, just like that.”

In 1982, Bill Gates offered Rao Remala stock options, but the developer was initially unimpressed. “I was actually upset because I felt I wasn’t being paid enough,” he recalled. At the time, his annual salary was $22,000, a modest sum compared to others in the company. But those stock options, which Remala thankfully did not turn down, would ultimately make him a millionaire when Microsoft went public.

As Microsoft’s 29th employee and its first Indian hire, Remala held various roles, ranging from individual contributor to Group Manager, Product Unit Manager, and eventually Technical Director. He played an integral role in the team that helped define the personal computing industry.

The power of giving back

After 23 years at Microsoft, Remala retired in 2004. His retirement marked the end of an era for him, but not the end of his contributions. While many of his contemporaries went on to create startups, Remala found his calling in philanthropy, although he also dabbled  in angel investing for few startups.

Together with his wife, Satya, he established the Satya & Rao Remala Foundation in 1998, inspired both by his humble beginnings and by Satya’s parents, who had long served their own community in the family’s Eluru, India, home. Their focus has been on health and education for underserved communities. Grateful for their good fortune, the philanthropist and his family have committed themselves to creating opportunities for those in greatest need.

The couple set up a donor-advised fund at the foundation, and since then, their philanthropic efforts have only grown. “We wanted to give back, especially to communities of colour and immigrant communities like ours,” says Remala. Their daughters, Srilata and Srilakshmi, have since taken up the mantle, applying their own professional backgrounds to the foundation's grant making. They have been working closely with organizations such as the Technology Access Foundation (TAF), which aims to provide educational opportunities for children of colour.

Satya & Rao Remala Foundation supports underprivileged students in universities such as Seattle University, the University of Washington, and Carnegie Mellon amongst others apart from working on several health initiatives. Recently they have supported Dr. McGarry Houghton, a pulmonary physician-scientist focused on the immune system's role in cancer and early detection of lung cancer, by naming him the first recipient of the Satya and Rao Remala Family Endowed Chair at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center.

Indian talent in Microsoft’s global workforce

Microsoft employs a significant number of engineers from India, making it one of the largest employers of Indian engineers worldwide. Indian employees play a critical role in the company’s global operations, comprising a substantial portion of its workforce. As of 2024, Microsoft’s global workforce totals over 228,000, with many Indian professionals contributing to its success. These employees are spread across the United States, as well as the UK, Europe, Asia, and especially India. The company’s corporate headquarters located in Redmond, Washington, a part of the Seattle metropolitan area, with its thriving tech ecosystem, has become a major hub for the Indian diaspora, particularly for tech professionals. In India, Microsoft boasts over 20,000 employees engaged in sales and marketing, research and development, and customer services and support.

Prominent leaders, such as CEO Satya Nadella, emphasize the importance of Indian talent in driving Microsoft’s innovation and global strategy. Rao Remala, the company’s first Indian employee, stands as a key figure in this story, having opened doors for future generations of Indian talent within the organization.

A legacy beyond technology

Remala’s legacy is more than just the code he wrote for Microsoft. It’s the impact he continues to make through his philanthropic efforts, inspiring others from the South Asian community to give back. “We hope our story encourages other immigrants to get involved in philanthropy,” he said. He has also built an eye hospital in his village through his foundation’s initiatives.

Today, Remala enjoys a slower pace of life, traveling with his wife and staying connected to his roots. “We’ve come a long way from that tiny village in Andhra Pradesh but our hearts are still there,” he said. From a young boy walking six miles to school to a tech pioneer and philanthropist dedicated to empowering future generations, his journey is a true Global Indian story.

"President Kennedy's speech really fascinated me," shares Dr. Azad Madni, as he connects with Global Indian for an exclusive interview, adding, "I too wanted to contribute something to the aerospace industry, and that's what motivated me to pursue a career in this field. I have worked for Rockwell International Space Shuttle, which was NASA's first, manned, re-usable spacecraft. And today, I have several aerospace engineers under my guidance at the University of Southern California."

The flight to the USA

A Bombay lad, Dr. Madni was always fascinated by how things around him worked. But, while he loved to learn, the aerospace engineer's father was more interested in how were things being taught at his school. "My father was very interested in my education, right from the beginning. I remember, he would just show up at my school, St. Mary's High School, and would enquire about how various subjects were being taught to us. He wanted to ensure that I did not just get the knowledge from the books, but also by engaging with the equipments or machines directly," he says, adding that this influenced his life path a lot. "The Gordon Prize is all about education. My father's quest to make sure that I got practical knowledge of things had a big impression on me. Now that I am a teacher, I too ensure that my students get more than what is written in the books," laughs the engineer.

Playing with his erector set in the backyard, Dr. Madni never thought that one day he would be using his toys to teach several young students. "I used to play a lot with the erector set and build airplanes, buses, and trucks. Back then I did not realise how important that was in developing critical thinking and creative skills that can help you in later life,” Dr Madni says. Now, he encourages hands-on learning his classroom too, using Digital Twins, a “virtual replica of the physical system for people to experiment with, explore, and learn how the system behaves. And that all had its roots in the early hands-on learning that I had with the erector set," shares the engineer.

He was in school when President Kennedy made his famous speech 'We Choose to Go to the Moon', and it was then that he decided that he would move to the United States of America, so after finishing his intermediate. "That was the only goal back then - to study in the USA. So, I moved to the country in 1965. Back then, India and the USA were very different worlds, and not many Indians chose to come to the USA," shares the engineer, who has also authored several books.

Pursuing a bachelor's in engineering at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), Dr. Madni didn't face much problem adjusting after arriving in the US. However, "I couldn't get used to the American food. I missed Indian food so much," he laughs. Dr. Madni went on to pursue a master's and later earned a Ph.D. from UCLA for his work in the fields of engineering systems, computer methodology, and AI.

A scholarly journey

The year that Dr. Madni finished his graduation was the same year that Neil Armstrong first set foot on the lunar soil. However, as the US rejoiced, Dr. Madni faced new challenges. "Well, the plan was to find a job soon after graduation and start earning. However, it was a challenging period for the country facing an economic downturn. A few of my friends, who studied with me, gave up looking for a job and went into selling real estate or working in restaurants," he shares. Even though things looked bleak, Dr. Madni decided to stay the course. "The thing was, while I was studying, I lost my father and had responsibilities towards my family back in India. I had to earn.” It took him a while but he found his first job as an engineer, starting his career in the USA. “While I was pursuing my doctorate, I was interviewed by Rockwell International and soon started working on NASA's space shuttle programme. So, it was kind of dream-come-true moment for me."

In 1994, the engineer also founded a company - Intelligent Systems Technology, Inc, which is an award-winning hi-tech company specialising in model-based approaches for addressing scientific and societal problems of national and global significance. "The idea is to advance the field of augmented intelligence and human-machine teaming to maximise the joint performance of human-machine teams," he shares.

But then, how does someone with so much industrial experience move to academia? "My company's success was possibly one of the reasons why the University of Southern California approached me to take over one of their flagship programmes, Systems Architecting and Engineering. So, I have been teaching since 2006-07 academic year," he says. Dr. Madni is currently USC's most accomplished multidisciplinary faculty with significant achievements across multiple technical fields. He holds the Northrop Grumman Fred O’Green Chair in Engineering and has received many awards for his contributions. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and a Fellow of IEEE. Dr. Madni has led 97 research projects and received over $100 million in funding from government agencies and companies like NASA, NIST, Boeing, and General Motors.

A recipient of over 100 awards, including the most recent 2023 NAE Gordon Prize, the AIAA/ASEE Leland Atwood Award for excellence in engineering education and research, the 2019 ASEE/INCOSE Outstanding Systems Engineering Educator Award, and the 2013 IISE Innovation in Curriculum Development Prize, Dr. Madni shares that he is far from retirement still. "Currently, I am working on several research projects, including autonomous self-driving cars, unmanned aerial vehicles, and game-based simulations for STEM education. These researches will take me at least six to eight years and are being funded by both the government and private sector.”

But the engineer is not just an academician. Dr. Madni has a rich history of giving back and has been honoured with various awards for his charitable efforts. In 2021, he was presented with the Benefactor Award by the International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE) in recognition of his many years of philanthropy and mentorship to engineering students worldwide. This marked only the second time in 31 years that INCOSE granted this award. In 2020, he was also honoured with the IEEE-USA Entrepreneurship Achievement Award for his lifetime of contributions to innovation, mentorship, and philanthropy. Additionally, he holds life memberships in the NAE Marie Curie Donor Society and the NAE Albert Einstein Donor Society.

La dolce vita: How Monika Dharia produces eco-friendly ponchos from sugar at GreenGear Supply Co

(Nov 20, 2024) When Monika Dharia arrived at Duke University to begin her engineering degree, she soon found that classmates, visitors, and faculty were all accustomed to getting around soaking wet, thanks to the sudden thundershowers that were a daily occurrence. Ponchos seemed like the perfect solution to stay dry, Dharia thought, but at the same time, she shuddered at the idea of that much plastic choking her beautiful campus. So, she began looking into compostable ponchos and found they had their own problems, which included a short shelf life—most were not reusable, and there was little information on how to dispose of them. Moreover, ponchos weren't limited to her college campus; they were used in stadiums, national parks, amusement parks, music festivals, and a host of large-scale events. And a single poncho, she was shocked to learn, was equivalent to 10 plastic bags. This seemingly simple challenge sparked a journey that would lead her to create GreenGear Supply Company—a business at the intersection of environmental engineering, entrepreneurship, and sustainability. The Call to Action

Dharia’s background in environmental engineering, combined with her minor in economics, had already primed her to seek actionable solutions to climate challenges. Yet, it wasn’t until her Social Innovation course at Duke that she began to envision a product that would go beyond individual convenience to address systemic environmental issues.

“Every poncho is equivalent to ten plastic bags,” Dharia explained. “And the compostable options on the market? They had their own issues, requiring specialized facilities and short shelf lives. I realized the so-called sustainable solutions weren’t truly sustainable.”

With a clear problem in front of her, Dharia set out to design an alternative. Months of research and prototyping culminated in the EcoRain poncho, made from 100% recyclable bioplastics.

Transforming Vision into Reality

Initially, Dharia planned to distribute her EcoRain ponchos exclusively at Duke, but it didn’t take long for her to recognize a larger market. “I started thinking of all the places where ponchos are used—stadiums, amusement parks, national parks. The environmental impact was staggering,” she said. In 2018, Dharia co-founded GreenGear Supply Company with Russell Heller, a fellow advocate for sustainable business models.

The path wasn’t straightforward. “Early on, I learned that not every piece of advice needs to be followed,” Dharia shared. Participation in the Melissa and Doug Entrepreneurs Program helped her refine her business instincts. “When you’re developing your own idea, you’re your own CEO. Breaking Ground with Innovation

GreenGear’s big break came when it won the Sabin Sustainable Venture Prize at Yale University in 2019. The award not only validated their mission but also provided crucial funding to scale production. By then, Dharia had perfected the design of the EcoRain poncho to ensure it was not only recyclable but also reusable, folding neatly into its hood for convenient storage.

Despite these successes, challenges loomed. Early manufacturing runs revealed issues with non-recyclable components and long production lead times. “Every setback taught us something new about the lifecycle of our products and the responsibility we had to ensure sustainability at every stage,” Dharia said.

A Crisis and a Pivot

When COVID-19 struck, GreenGear faced an existential crisis. With outdoor events canceled and customers scaling back, the demand for ponchos plummeted. But Dharia found an unexpected opportunity to pivot.

“My mom called me one day and said she saw healthcare workers wearing garbage bags as PPE,” Dharia recalled. Leveraging GreenGear’s existing inventory, Dharia launched a GoFundMe campaign, raising enough to donate 5,000 ponchos to healthcare workers in New York and Liberia.

The donations marked a turning point for GreenGear, reinforcing Dharia’s belief in the social impact of her business. “It reminded us why we started this journey in the first place—to solve real-world problems,” she said.

Building Partnerships

Post-pandemic, GreenGear turned its focus back to growth. Monika Dharia secured partnerships with organizations like the Philadelphia Eagles, Duke University, and national parks. The collaboration with the Eagles, a recognized leader in sustainability, was particularly significant.

“The Eagles have been incredible partners,” Dharia said. “We’re now exploring closed-loop recycling programs with them to repurpose ponchos into stadium chairs or roof tiles. It’s a model we hope to expand across the sports industry.”

Beyond sports, GreenGear’s products have also found a place in outdoor tourism and corporate events. “We’re building a network of partnerships that align with our values,” Dharia explained.

Expanding the Vision

Beyond ponchos, GreenGear is diversifying its product line to include other sustainable outdoor items like phone cases, water bottles, and hiking utensils. “We’re not just selling products; we’re rethinking the entire lifecycle of consumer goods,” Dharia emphasized.

To achieve this, Monika Dharia and her team are exploring innovative materials like sugar-based ethanol and natural fibers. “Our goal is to offer alternatives that are not only sustainable but also scalable,” she added.

Lessons in Leadership

For Dharia, the journey has been about more than business. It’s been a lesson in perseverance, adaptability, and leadership. “As businesses, we can’t put the entire burden of sustainability on consumers,” she said. “It’s up to us to design products that are intuitive, impactful, and environmentally responsible.”

Dharia also emphasized the importance of collaboration. “The sustainability challenges we face are too big for any one organization to tackle alone. By working together, we can create solutions that are greater than the sum of their parts,” she said.

Looking Ahead

With her eyes set on scaling GreenGear’s impact, Dharia remains focused on her original mission. Her plans include expanding the company’s market reach and achieving carbon negativity through innovative supply chain practices.

As India basks in the glory of 75 years of independence, this first-generation entrepreneur has made his own contribution to the nation by developing 75 model villages in rural Maharashtra. His Swades Foundation, named after the widely acclaimed movie, Swades, that he produced in 2004, has impacted 27,00 Maharashtrian villages so far. Each of his 75 model village had to meet a set of some 40 parameters to qualify as a ‘Swades Dream Village’. These parameters were divided into buckets of 5S’s - Swachh (Clean), Sundar (Beautiful), Swasthya (Access to Health Care), Sakshar (Educated), and Saksham (Self-Reliant).

Every rural household in these 75 model villages has access to an individual toilet, potable drinking water through taps at home, access to healthcare services, education and a diverse range of livelihoods, thanks to Ronnie and Zarina’s relentless efforts to make a difference. Inspired by the success, the philanthropic couple look forward to scaling up by building 750 dream villages across Maharashtra and beyond in the years to come.

The foundation 

With the belief that India will witness a real growth story only when the rural population is empowered to make choices and transform their own lives, Ronnie founded SHARE (Society to Heal Aid Restore Educate) two decades ago.   

SHARE was renamed the Swades Foundation after the success of the Shahrukh Khan starrer whose character was somewhat based on Ronnie’s urge to give back. The foundation has been working with the mission to empower one million lives through 360-degree development across health, education, water, sanitation and economic growth. Ronnie aspires to create a development model that can be replicated across India and the world.

If not now, then when? — If not here, then where? — If not you, then who?”  

Asks Ronnie in his message on Swades Foundation’s website.   

Then and now 

Famous for founding the media conglomerate, UTV Motion Pictures, the first-generation entrepreneur, Ronnie started out in 1980’s with a capital of ₹37,000, and a small team in a tiny basement office in Mumbai.  Over the course of a career spanning three decades, he has constantly demonstrated creativity, innovation and a strong business acumen in his multiple business ventures to reach the pinnacle.  

His foundation, with a 350-member strong team and more than 1,000 volunteers strives to find and execute solutions to the multiple challenges that rural India is facing. The Screwvalas are working on a collaborative model, tying up with multiple partners which include NGOs, other foundations, the government and corporates to change the rural picture of Maharashtra.

With the determination to create communities that will have the ability to contribute substantially to India’s growth story, Swades is active in two thousand villages and is working on water, sanitation, health, education and livelihood opportunities. Some 471,000 people have been impacted so far.  

Glitzy childhood despite limited resources 

Ronnie had the sharp mind of an entrepreneur from the very beginning. Born into a Parsi family, he grew up in a tiny house in Mumbai opposite Novelty Cinema, then one of the city’s most famous cinema halls, which hosted red carpet premieres of movies. His veranda was the ideal place to have the fulfilling glance of superstars attending film premiers. At just 10, little Ronnie started selling tickets to people to stand in his balcony, from where they could catch a glimpse of the stars and take pictures. When the little entrepreneur decided to branch out into selling visitors snacks, his plans were thwarted sternly by his grandparents.

His entrepreneurial spirit remained intact, however and young Ronnie continued to produce a stream of ideas to make money. He would even organise events in his locality and make some money from them. Talking about his childhood he writes in his book, "I lived there (opposite to Novelty Cinema) until sixteen, privileged enough to go to a school where most of my classmates came in cars while I waited forty-five minutes for the B.E.S.T bus to arrive."

From abroad to India 

As he grew up, he tried his hand at theatre, and many innovative business ideas, which not only found success but gave the people of India a new set of experiences. During a trip to the UK to enhance his television anchoring skills, Ronnie visited a toothbrush manufacturing plant with his father, who was there on work as employee of a personal care company.

When he discovered that factory owners were about to decommission two machines that were in pretty good condition, he came up with an idea of his own. With little know-how and even less money in hand, Ronnie took a big business risk, shipping the machines to India. For the next few months, he worked to bring big brands like Colgate and P&G on board as purchasers of the toothbrushes manufactured with his UK-made machine. The entrepreneur was able to sell more than 5 lakh tooth brushes in the first year.  

Pioneering cable TV revolution of India 

In addition to pioneering initiatives in many industries, the Global Indian introduced cable TV in India at a time when people did not know anything beyond Doordarshan. His pilot project in Mumbai of introducing the idea of remote control run TV had failed initially, despite his extensive efforts of door-to-door visits to make people understand the new technology. People were just not ready for the idea, mainly because it was so expensive.

Ronnie began collaborating with hotels, which installed cable TV in their room. He grew his potential customer base in this way, as guests from these hotels decided they wanted the technology at home, too. Charging ₹200 per month for a connection he had soon enjoyed a customer base of thousands of households. He also produced ‘Shanti’, India’s first daily television drama, inspired by the hugely popular soap operas in the West. His desi kids’ channel, Hungama, telecasted anime shows like Doraemon and Shin-chan were other international concepts he brought to India.  

Life as glamorous as the movies  

Ronnie Screwvala’s UTV produced and distributed more than 60 movies, most of which have been big box office successes. He sold UTV to Disney in 2012 for a whopping ₹2,000 crores. 

Moving on from films to education he co-founded upGrad, an online education platform focused at providing industry-relevant programs specifically for working professionals. He turned writer in 2015 with his first autobiography, Dream with your eyes Open: An Entrepreneurial Journey. His second book, Skill It, Kill It, was released last year.

Ronnie’s love for telling stories did not die after he sold off UTV Motion Pictures, and he started a new company, RSVP Movies, that has released films like Uri- the surgical strike, and the Sky is pink. Apart from running other businesses the philantropreneur is a sports buff. He not only plays kabbadi, he also owns a Kabbadi team called U Mumba. 

In his book Dream with Your Eyes Open, he writes “Risk isn’t about rushing headlong into uncertain situations. It means pushing the envelope when others want to take the safe route, and caring about potential rewards than possible losses.” With this attitude, the ace entrepreneur has gained enough to make life rewarding for not only himself but lakhs of people in villages of India.

Atita Verghese: India’s first female skateboarder is kickflipping gender norms

(December 4, 2023) Atita Verghese was 19 when she got on a skateboard for the first time, on a whim. The spark she felt was instant, and very real - ten years later, it's still burning bright. Atita Verghese, or 'Atty', as she is known to her friends, is India's first female skateboarder. She turned a deaf ear when she was jeered at for being a girl, and if there was no infrastructure available, she helped build it with her own hands. When, for the longest time, she couldn't afford her own board, she learned to make do by borrowing from the boys. That's how Atita went on to become part of a counterculture tsunami, as women around the world, clad in sarees, hijabs and baggy jeans, kickflipped and switched their way to freedom. She's also the only skateboarder in the country to land a coveted Vans sponsorship (Vans is an American manufacturer of skateboarding shoes and apparel). The counterculture crew 

"There were like five, six skaters in the city (Bengaluru) when I first started, and not many more in the country," Atita tells Global Indian. In those early days, the boys indulged the lone girl in their crew. "When they took a break they would let me have their skateboards," she recalls. She and four others, including her friend Abhishek, who first introduced her to the sport, formed the Holy Stoked Collective and when he saw "how into it" she was, he bought Atita her first board, "all the way from the USA. I was stoked," she breaks into a grin. "The boys were quite nice to me, it was new to them. Every time I tried something or landed a new trick they would cheer me on."

Still, it was hard to be taken seriously as a young woman in an all-male space. Atita took it all in her stride, until a group of Germans who were working with her on a project asked the obvious question: "Why do they treat you like this?" It was an unpleasant realisation, but it was also when Atita began to realise she was different and that being so was exactly what made her special.

At the time, to simply skateboard meant starting from the absolute basics. Holy Stoked rose to the challenge and began building their own ramp on a donated plot. "We were determined to make it happen," says Atita, who was part of the project as well. Two other skaters from Germany, who heard this was happening also came down to help. They happened to have their own building company back home and a year later, they returned, this time with Levi's and Nike funding them. "They brought pro skaters along with them to share the culture," Atita says.

The fledgling sub culture was starting to grow and Holy Stoked got on Instagram, which was still fairly new at the time.  "They wouldn't ever post anything about me, though," Atita says. That only changed when one crew member, who eventually fell out with the collective, decided to make it happen. "He took a photo of me and posted it. That was the first photo of me on the internet," she says. The skateboarders from Germany also spotted her talent. "I was the only girl skateboarding in the country and wanted to encourage me. One of them came up with the idea to photograph and document me." He reached out to Vans, telling them about this Indian "girl who skates really well."

When fame came calling 

Before she knew it, the recognition was pouring in - journalists from around the world were beating down the door; everybody was talking about Atita Verghese. Even the American apparel giant Vans got in touch. Atita started an Instagram account too and quickly racked up a follower count. She got sponsorship from Extreme, who also put her in touch with Stanley Black & Decker. "That was awesome," she grins. "They would send me on trips and I did campaigns with them."  

But what’s passion without purpose? Girls still weren't getting into the sport and Atita wanted to change that. What was keeping girls away? "We're still trying to answer this," she responds. Skateboarding is niche, and it can also be quite scary, she reasons. "It's an extreme sport for sure – if you’re falling, you're falling on concrete." Atita has fallen too - last year, she fractured two fingers. It was a severe enough injury to keep most people away for life, but Atita was back on her skateboard the first chance she got.

While broken bones and grazed knees are always imminent, skateboarding, she says, is the ultimate lesson in mindfulness. "You just stop thinking about anything. Your only thoughts are about staying in the moment, figuring out the technicalities, where your body weight needs to be and where your feet are placed. There's no time to think of anything else." Body and brain are firing on all cylinders and there’s a lot of creativity involved. With skateboarding, "nobody likes carbon copy stuff," Atita says. "Originality and creativity are very respected. It's all about finding your own style."

A way of life 

As Bengaluru grew and developed, its vacant spaces were slowly devoured by the ever-growing concrete sea. It was a dangerous sport too, as Atita has pointed out. But the benefits trumped all that. The "meditative" process kept her going - "They say trauma can be healed through skateboarding," she tells me. Maybe there's truth to that, not just through the learning of the sport but because choosing it makes you part of a community, and introduces you to a way of life. If you can skateboard, you're part of a community – of rebels, outliers, iconoclasts and free spirits, perhaps, united an all-consuming love for skateboarding. There were true friends to be found on the fringe.

It’s not just that. What began as a pastime for surfers in the US’ West Coast back in the 1940s and 50s has grown into a global subculture that left its imprint on art, music, fashion and cinema. Companies like Vans, DC Shoes and Supreme, which sell skateboarding gear and apparel, are major fashion labels - the beanies and graphic tees have long since spilled off skateboarding ramps into mainstream couture. Skateboarding is associated with genres like punk rock, hip-hop and alt rock. In 2020, the sport finally made its Olympic debut.

Girl Skate India

Atita was living the dream, but she wanted to do more. "I wanted to not just focus only on myself," she says. And if she was creating the scene from scratch, building skateboards and drumming up demand, it needed to have a higher purpose than trying to appeal to a bunch of suits in a rigid corporate ecosystem. Living as she did in a country where physical safety is not a guarantee for women, who never even stop to question that, there was lots to be done. That's how she started Girl Skate India. She wanted to spread the world and to bring more women into the fold so they too could feel the warmth of being part of this vibrant, global community.  

Atita conducts workshops, making use of every bit of free space she can find. "The stars aligned and it worked out," she says. She goes to rural India and brings women and girls out of their homes and on to skateboards. It's a struggle, obviously - the corporate ecosystem comes with rigid rules but nothing happens for free. "When I started Girl Skate, there were a couple of other girls skating too, they had started a few years after me. I could see the movement starting to happen and we wanted everyone to join."

In Kovalam, Atita and the Girl Skate India crew built a skate park for SISP, an organisation that takes in destitute kids. They used surfing as an incentive  - their policy was no school, no surfing. And because the kids love surfing so much, they also go to school. Since the monsoon is too hectic, they built a skatepark, led by Atita and a group of female skateboarders from Europe. "We did a workshop at a girls's school too and the teachers came in sarees. It was amazing!"  

Purpose and fulfillment

It's been a big learning process too - "We kept getting to know people's stories and what they have been through and just how regressive society can be," Atita says. The women and girls they work with come from poverty-stricken homes, many from slums where several houses share a single bathroom. "One of the girls was able to build a new bathroom inside her house because of the money she got from a skate project I involved her in," Atita smiles. Alcoholism and domestic violence are rampant – kids fall into bad company, or take their aggression out on their peers. Skateboarding gives them a healthy outlet.  

Girl Skate India has built around 10 skate parks so far. And Atita has seen the change taking place. In one village, a single mother who was harassed for not having a husband, pushed her daughter to skateboard – the girl became MP’s first female skateboarder, got an education and built a life for herself. Atita tells me the story with a smile, saying, "It makes me think that maybe we're doing the right thing here."
