Meet Chef Radi Manoj – serving modern Indian food with an attitude at Tevar, Hyderabad

This attitude, where he truly loves what he does, shows up on the menu of Tevar – the Progressive Indian Kitchen and Bar, a restaurant in Knowledge City, one of Hyderabad’s newer corporate areas. From a CA to a Chef

Chef Radi Manoj hails originally from Rajasthan, but grew up in Mumbai, wanting to be a chartered accountant. Even while doing his B.Com, seeing his older brother become a professional chef inspired him to want to do the same. He loved to sketch and paint, and occasionally cook, even as a child. He completed the first year of his CA course after graduating, then changed trajectories and gave the entrance exam for hotel management. On clearing it, he joined the Institute of Hotel Management in Bhopal, and loved every minute of it.

Sitting in a sunny corner of Tevar, Chef Radi tells Global Indian, “After my first year, I had to do an internship and I worked at ITC Maratha in Mumbai. I am not an introvert, but I was not comfortable interacting with people all the time. I preferred being in the kitchen and getting creative with dishes. I decided then that I wanted to be a chef.”

As part of campus recruitment, Chef Radi got offers from the Taj and the Oberoi Groups of Hotels, but he chose to go with Old World Hospitality, the company which later launched Indian Accent, by Chef Manish Mehrotra. He says, “I would call him my guru and mentor as a lot of what I create today is based on what he taught me. He is the pioneer of modern Indian cuisine. He always said, ‘Don’t fix what is not broken. Don’t make a Paneer Chettinad because that region doesn’t eat paneer. Don’t mix flavours for the sake of it; uplift a dish where possible.’ At Indian Accent, the clientele were global, well-travelled affluent people, so we had to give them new flavours, but nothing that seemed forced.”

Arabian Days and Nights

After four years and a lifetime’s worth of learning, a fluke call asking him to join another legendary chef – Sanjeev Kapoor – had Chef Radi moving to his company. With this job, he travelled all over India, setting up restaurant franchises for the brand. He would be travelling almost 300 days every year; and three-plus years later, he decided he wanted a change. He says, “I was not able to spend enough time with my family so I met Sanjeev and told him I wanted something less hectic. He suggested I go to Oman, where they were setting up five restaurants. I took it up and moved to the Middle East. Initially, I couldn’t understand Arabic food. I saw everyone relishing it but I didn’t find it flavourful. That doesn’t mean the food is bad; I didn’t have the palate for it. It was a learning curve because I got to learn about different Arabic flavours.” The Oman stint led him to Dubai to work with a company he later discovered wasn’t well-funded, but in the process, he met Ananda Kumar Pillai, an entrepreneur who invited him to set up a restaurant in Kuwait.

That move was a milestone for him as he worked on the concept for six months, and set up Agnii – a restaurant that serves Indian and Kuwaiti food. Today, the brand is a chain of eight uber successful restaurants. He says, “It was his concept; and we launched a 69-seater restaurant, of mostly Kuwaiti and some Indian food. We would do 350 covers a day. The concept was that of a central kitchen where the food was cooked and sent to the other venues, in refrigerated vans.” Each outlet had a smaller kitchen where the food would be thawed, heated and served. It did phenomenally well. “When we had leftover biryani, I would mix it with cheese and herbs and serve it as arancini balls. They became so popular that we had to make them as a dish and not just from leftover biryani.”

Indian Food with Attitude

Moving back to India after the second lockdown when his father passed away due to Covid, Chef Radi was still in two minds about going back to Agnii and Kuwait. He chose to stay back as his mother would be alone and he wanted his family nearby. Then he got a chance to launch Tevar – The Progressive Kitchen and Bar in Hyderabad, for entrepreneurs Narendra Pal Singh and Nikhil Dhawan. He says, “The owners had a clear vision – we would not serve fusion food, but Indian dishes in a contemporary way. No roti and sabji in a taco or a chicken tikka masala in pasta. It would be regional Indian food with a twist. I personally like to use indigenous ingredients that are the underdogs of Indian cuisine; like arbi, lotus stem and yam. We created a kakori kabab with lotus stem, and because it is so soft, we serve it on a piece of rusk. We make a galouti kabab with arbi – the methods for both are the same as the non-veg versions, but we use vegetables not normally associated with kababs. We serve bhel made with banana flower and an avocado kulfi with banana and honey.”

Even the ubiquitous samosa gets revamped in Chef Radi’s hands. Since most people like the crust, his version of the much-loved triangle of fried heaven is served as a tower of alternating layers of crust and filling. Needless to say, it is one of the most frequently ordered snacks at Tevar. Chef Radi loves pani puri so he had to put it on the menu here. And, in the 15 years of being in Hyderabad, it was the best I have tasted in this city. The waiter comes up with a wooden trolley and serves it at your table, just as a street vendor would – with different stuffings. Eating with one’s hands is encouraged and all the creations have an attitude – evident through their taste and garnish.

His favourite ingredients are coconut and curry leaves and he prefers the minimalistic approach where he uses not more than eight to ten ingredients in his dishes.

A team effort

Frequently giving credit to his team of chefs, Chef Radi reiterates that they experiment with recipes and make them three or four days in a row. If he dislikes a dish one day and likes it the next, they tweak it further and then take a consensus on whether it should be on the menu. Having said that, he innovates considerably. The Katafi Paneer uses roasted vermicelli [katafi is the Arabic name for it and is popularly used for a dessert in Kuwait] and it is served with an orange reduction giving it a Mediterranean flavour. The Achari Paneer Tikka is marinated in a Rajasthan chilli pickle instead of the usual pickle masala. An Assamese style Black Chicken is cooked with black sesame seeds. A soft dhokla is served with slightly sweetened sour curd on top and a Malai Chicken Tikka is marinated in blue cheese. Paan leaves are used in a mocktail while a dash of vodka added to pani puri makes it a cocktail.

The point is that Indian ingredients and methods of cooking are celebrated at Tevar unabashedly. There is a modern touch that gets added with flair which take regional Indian cuisine to the next level. And while the recipes keep evolving, Chef Radi would like his career graph to move towards launching his own restaurant some day. We hope the universe is listening.

Roots in theatre

Born in New Delhi, Anupam Tripathi's fascination with acting began early while studying at Kendriya Vidyalaya and later JNU. His inspiration stemmed from witnessing the powerful performances at India’s National School of Drama (NSD), an institution renowned for its training in theatrical arts.

Initially, he pursued his passion for acting through local theatre in New Delhi, joining the Behroop theatre group led by playwright Shahid Anwar. His first significant role as a slave in Spartacus marked his entry into the world of performance. Following that, he cultivated his skills under the guidance of experienced mentors, preparing to step into professional theatre. In 2010, however, the then budding actor’s career took an unexpected turn when he received the prestigious AMA+ (Arts Major Asian plus) Scholarship to study at the Korea National University of Arts, setting the stage for an extraordinary journey. “I spent 10 years in Korea as a student and a theatre actor persevering every day,” he shared, talking about the hard work he has put into his career to take flight.

Adapting to Korea: New challenges, new horizons

Moving to South Korea in 2010 was a big challenge. The actor faced language barriers, cultural differences, and the inherent struggles of adapting to a new society. Reflecting on these hurdles, he shared, “Life does not go as planned.” Despite these obstacles, he learned Korean within two years and immersed himself in local theatre, eventually making his way into Korean media through small roles in films like Ode to My Father and plays like Bullyang Cheongnyeon (Troublemaking Youth).

These early roles often cast Anupam Tripathi as migrant workers, reflecting the social fabric of Korean society and giving him a unique platform to represent a marginalised perspective. “I am grateful that I was able to stand on stage because of these people (migrant workers),” he remarked, highlighting his commitment to authentic storytelling.

Indian actors shine in the Korean entertainment industry

In recent years, Indian actors have been making waves in the Korean entertainment industry, bringing a refreshing diversity to its dynamic landscape. Apart from Anupam Tripathi, names like Abhishek 'Lucky' Gupta and Anushka Sen are among the few Indian talents who have successfully entered this sphere, capturing the attention and admiration of Korean audiences. Their presence highlights a growing trend where more Indian actors aspire to participate in Korean dramas, movies, and variety shows, creating cross-cultural connections between India and South Korea. Korean viewers have also shown a warm reception to these Indian faces, enjoying the diversity and fresh narratives they bring.

The Indian actors are not only adapting to Korean culture but also embracing its nuances with a deep sense of respect and dedication. They undergo language training, cultural immersion, and even modify their acting styles to align with Korean sensibilities, reflecting their commitment to honouring the industry and culture they have joined. This mutual appreciation is enriching both entertainment industries, and opening doors for more Indian actors to explore new avenues in Korea.

The breakthrough: Squid Game and global recognition

Anupam Tripathi’s career took a monumental leap with his portrayal of Ali Abdul in Squid Game in 2021. His character, a Pakistani worker desperate to support his family, resonated with audiences worldwide and catapulted him to global fame. The show’s success brought him sudden visibility and a social media following that grew from 10,000 to over 2.5 million practically overnight. His performance, marked by vulnerability and emotional depth, was widely celebrated, with director Hwang Dong-hyuk noting, “Finding good foreign actors in Korea was challenging but [Tripathi had] emotional depth and fluency in Korean.”

Ali’s character faced severe hardships, echoing Anupam’s own experiences as an immigrant. The role allowed him to channel his journey into art, and he felt a deep connection to his character’s struggles. “I, myself, was an immigrant in Korea looking for a better opportunity.” For Tripathi, Squid Game was not merely a job but an opportunity to portray the complexities of life as a foreigner, resonating with audiences who had lived similar experiences.

There was no looking back for the actor in the South Korean entertainment industry after the success of Squid Game. Several opportunities fell on his lap apart from awards like Seoul International Drama Award and Screen Actors Guild Award.

Stepping into Indian entertainment industry: IC 814: The Kandahar Attack

After gaining prominence in Korea, Anupam Tripathi finally achieved a lifelong dream by debuting in the television mini-series based on true events that tells the story of the longest hijacking in Indian aviation history. In 1999, five attackers hijacked a passenger plane and rerouted it to Taliban-controlled territory, sparking an international political crisis. The series stars well-known Indian actors like Naseeruddin Shah, Pankaj Kapur, Vijay Varma, Dia Mirza, and Arvind Swamy.

Anupam Tripathi’s role in director Anubhav Sinha's series is of Ram Chandra Yadav, a key intelligence asset for India in Nepal. The series allowed the actor to explore a different side of his acting abilities. In contrast to the innocent, well-meaning Ali in Squid Game, Ram Chandra Yadav is a complex intelligence officer driven by duty and patriotism. “I couldn’t have asked for a better character to start with in India,” he said. “In the Squid Game, people saw me as naive or innocent. This character was totally opposite.”

Preparing for the role was a deeply immersive experience. Tripathi researched the demeanour and behaviour of intelligence officers, even visiting the Indian embassy in Korea. His preparation paid off, as he adeptly conveyed the fine balance of strength and vulnerability required by the role “It’s a very thin line. I cannot go too much. I cannot go too less,” he remarked on his portrayal of the character.

Building bridges between cultures

Anupam Tripathi’s journey has not only bridged two cultures but has also opened doors for Indian representation in Korean entertainment. Serving as the Ambassador for the Ulsan International Film Festival in 2021 and speaking at forums like the Oxford Union, he is embracing his unique role as a cultural ambassador. “I feel blessed in a way, as I’m able to represent Indian culture and Korean culture,” he says, proud of his position as a connector between two worlds. 

Despite being busy in acting, this year the actor has also completed his masters in acting at the Korea National University of Arts. Remembering his late father and thanking the Art Major Asian plus Scholarship programme for  giving him the opportunity to learn acting, the craft which he enjoys the most, he remarked, “It’s the blessings of my mother, my family, professors, teachers, friends who all guided me to work on self, improve and grow better through education.”

Future projects and ambitions

Anupam Tripathi's career continues to flourish, with several exciting projects on the horizon. One of his notable upcoming roles includes Rhapsody for the Dead, where he portrays a spirit exorcist in a supernatural thriller set to release in Korea and other Asian countries. Additionally, he has taken on a U.K. short film project as both an actor and executive producer, demonstrating his desire to expand his creative involvement. A new Korean drama is also in the pipeline, further cementing his presence in the Korean industry.

The actor hopes to break the mould by appearing in a historical drama, a genre where foreign actors are rare in Korean productions. “Someday, I want to appear in an authentic historical drama for the first time as a foreign actor. I will break the limit of being a foreigner and show various charms,” he revealed, expressing his determination to challenge stereotypes and showcase his versatility.

10-tastic travels in 12 months – How startup founder Amanda Sodhi juggles music, film & travel

(December 29, 2021) In 2021, Amanda Sodhi was on the move, non-stop. Around Christmas last year, she sold her furniture in Kolkata, downsized to a suitcase and embarked on a journey in search of “home” and “belonging.” Living life out of a suitcase, Amanda’s search took her to 10 cities in the past 12 months. Friendships were born, memories cherished as this juggler of many talents moved forward. Her 12StepsToHome Instagram project across 12 cities in India went viral. The singer who has written lyrics for two songs in Amazon’s Made in Heaven and directed films in diverse genres, is looking at 2022 to become an author now! A digital nomad, Amanda’s startup — Pen Paper Dreams promotes creative self-expression. While Pen Paper Dreams began as a poem-a-day Instagram project, it evolved into a brand that helps people bust stress through creative self-expression.

A city to city trail

While enjoying a shikara ride on the pristine Dal Lake in Srinagar on Diwali 2020, a realisation dawned upon Amanda. “Rather than staying in one place and feeling sorry, why not consciously uproot each month and live in different cities and see if I find a place that has the potential to feel like home or, if I find my tribe,” informs Amanda, who like many others was feeling isolated towards 2020 end.

A chance meeting with filmmaker Amit Madheshiya (Cannes-winning director) in Srinagar who himself shuttles between Delhi, Mumbai and Srinagar led to 12StepsToHome. “Witnessing him pull that off inspired me to take it up a notch and live out of a suitcase for 12 months, a different city each month,” says Sodhi in an exclusive with Global Indian.

Born and brought up in Washington DC, Amanda moved to Los Angeles in 2011. She was 25 when she moved to Mumbai (2012) and later to Kolkata (2017). The same year, the Indian-American launched Pen Paper Dreams -- which works towards cultivating inclusive virtual safe spaces which are creative communities.

But first, the travel

Amanda’s journey took her through India’s hinterland. Her experiences in Andamans were most cherished. “In Andaman, I was fortunate to meet very kind locals who were a wonderful support system. The beaches were stunning too,” she says.

The beauty of Kashmir captivated this itinerant traveller though it was challenging at times. Her time in Hyderabad was great. “It has all the facilities of a tier-one city with the added bonus of a more leisurely pace,” quips Amanda, who went to Marymount University in Virginia, where she double majored in communications and English, and minored in business. She graduated the four-year programme in three years.

Living out of a suitcase is quite affordable, insists Amanda matter-of-factly. Her monthly spend is ₹7,000 to ₹15,000 on rentals, meals or shared kitchen access, Wi-Fi, electricity, room cleaning etc, though in metros like Mumbai, it was more. Amanda, whose father passed away in December 2015, has her mother and elder sister in the US.

Work defines her, through her 12 steps. To budget, the 34-year-old relies on auto-rickshaws and buses to sightsee. The startup founder is presently in God’s own country – Kerala - the 12th and final month of #12StepsToHome.

While her 12-month journey ends on December 31, 2021, the search for home and belonging has come full circle. “I would like to divide my time between Hyderabad and Srinagar next year,” informs Amanda, who just finished reading The Cat Who Saved Books and now switches between The Startup Wife, Destination Wedding and Tokyo Ever After.

A solo woman traveller

As a woman travelling alone, she has had some bad experiences too, one homestay billed her falsely, and after she wrote a bad review, she had to face the police. “In Srinagar, someone followed me to my homestay, and later even followed me to the police station. The homestay was semi-starving (us) tenants - though we were billed for a meal plan – as the landlady was sadistic. The second wave was in full swing, so most shops were shut and sourcing food became a huge issue,” says Amanda, who agrees with Indian comedian and actor Vir Das about “two Indias.”

Of course, Sodhi always has her guard up while travelling. “I have never felt that my life is in danger but eve-teasing saddens me. In Puri, I was uneasy when older men stared and cat-called at a beach. This, I would only go for walks when friends were on a a call with me,” informs Amanda, who grew up watching Hindi films and listening to Indian music.

The entrepreneurial bug

Travel aside, she is a hands-on entrepreneur. “I’m a digital nomad and I have great discipline. I meet client deadlines, irrespective of whether I am traveling or not. I’m simply living in different cities each month, not on a 365-day vacation,” says Sodhi. Interestingly, she had previously enrolled in a few kirtan classes at a local gurudwara, briefly.

Her startup conducted online sessions during the pandemic too. "Writing is therapeutic. We conducted many free creative writing workshops online to help people destress, in addition to our paid programmes. We created a virtual interactive reading and writing group. It is rewarding when people share how these sessions have helped them,” says Amanda. Her company works with interns and freelancers but Amanda does most of the work on her own. “We are a tiny startup, and don't have the budget to recruit a full-time team,” she smiles.

The future is bright

Next on agenda is a book about her 12StepsToHome. “I hope to release it in 2022, and will also release a new single then. I hope to continue to grow Pen Paper Dreams.” She is hoping that the book about #12StepsToHome gets picked up for an OTT project.

Earlier in her career, the Indian-American recorded the background score of an Indie film called 5 Souls in 2011, and wrote music reviews for Planet Bollywood which caught the attention of renowned lyricist, screenwriter and poet Prasoon Joshi. He asked her to translate his lyrics into English for his anthology, Sunshine Lanes.

She has penned the lyrics of two songs for Netflix series Made in Heaven, and for the hugely popular — Puppet Life, I Don't Write Sad Songs Anymore, Takiye Pe Sar she composed and sang too.

A tweet by AR Rahman and Kalki Koechlin for her lyrics in the two songs in Made In Heaven thrilled her to bits. She also released three singles earlier — Jigsaw Puzzle, Behind My Sunglasses and MainKhaali that were received well.

Filmi gupshup

As she juggles diverse talents, one must mention her co-written feature film Life! Camera, Action.... with Rohit Gupta. Amanda shared a nomination with him for Best Screenplay at the World Music and Independent Film Festival 2011. Apart from the lyrics of Hai Yeh Kaisa Safar, she wrote and directed two short films — The Dance of Death and Through Bloodshot Eyes.

Immersive art by Janavi Mahimtura Folmsbee installed at Houston Airport 

(January 18, 2023) Janavi Mahimtura Folmsbee had a difficult childhood. Diagnosed with reading and writing dyslexia at a time when people hardly understood it — she was often teased and bullied by students, right up to the time she finished 10th grade. Even so, her exceptional talent for creative writing and an imagination that was always in hyperdrive managed to set her apart from the crowd and the first acknowledgement of her talent came at the age of 16, when a newspaper published a poem she wrote. The sky is the limit Now 35-years-old, Janavi has become the only Indian female artist and South Asian to be included in the Houston Airport System art collection, extending over two international and one private airport. Her work is an art installation on marine life. “The work directly touches on the conservational understanding of ‘one ocean’, something I believe in strongly. She was selected out of 347 artists and authorised to curate the largest art installation out of the 10 art commissions awarded by the Houston airport system. Titled ‘Aquarius Art Tunnel’, it is a 240-feet immersive Art tunnel Installation, comprising two unique, 240 by 9 foot fine art murals. The hallway is covered with 700 yards of custom-designed sea anemone and abstract inspired carpet design.

“There are 15 unique lenticular works of art in the ceiling that have lighting components.  A total of 116 custom handcrafted lighting fixtures of side lighting reflect light on quartz crystal pigment in the paint on the murals, 58 for each side of the tunnel,” explains Janavi.

The deep sea experience

There is also a sound component and an augmented reality experience through an Instagram filter, which is inspired by the Halichoeres burekae, the Mardi Gras Wrasse fish which can change its gender and colors. This fish was discovered in the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary and till date can only be seen in this location.

“The Aquarius Art Tunnel is now the second possible location where you can experience what is like to dive under the waves with this species,” she points out. The project was commissioned by the Mayor's Office of Cultural Affairs on behalf of the Houston Airport System for Houston through the city’s Civic Art Program and the Houston Arts Alliance.

“There is world of colour that roars with vibrancy off the coast of Galveston out in our Gulf. I have captured this world with the use of my abstract and realism aesthetic to transform this tunnel into a space of what it feels like to be underwater in our very own National Marine Sanctuary off the Texas coast,” explains the artist.

The water-bearer

Janavi says the title Aquarius comes from the constellation. “The water bearer, as we are all connected through the night sky and constellations, is what inspired the conceptualization of the installation.” When the word is broken into three words the words “aqua” represents water. The letters “ri” inspire the hindi word “humari” which means “ours” and finally the last word is “us”.

“The artwork at the ends of the tunnel depict the mesophytic deeper zones of the reef and move to the shallower depths in the center of the tunnel, this is scientifically accurate to the species depicted in these zones,” says Janavi, who intricately painted the colorful complexities of these ecosystems upon the reefs and banks in the Northwestern Gulf of Mexico.

Audio elements included in the music mix include snaping shrimp recorded in this area and reef sounds provided by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, as well as scuba diving bubbles recorded on her diving excursions.


Early creative struggles

Born and raised in Mumbai, Janavi Mahimtura Folmsbee was brilliant when it came to solving difficult math problems and some other tough questions in school. Still, her teachers were puzzled by how she struggled with the simples of equations.

After school, once she would be done with multiple tutors, Janavi used to go home and find solace on the terrace of her Mumbai home in the evenings. “I would take deep breaths and gaze at the ocean across. The sound of waves and the ocean breeze lit a sense of wonder and peace in my mind and gave me the inspiration I grew up with,” says Janavi, who started making art when she was 12.

She recalls those delightful evenings during the weekends when she would play the piano while her mother and grandmother sat nearby, listening to her. “My mother would often invite visitors to join. On some occasions, we had artists, editors of magazines, authors, photographers, architects, industrialists and other special dignitaries from Italy and Germany visit us,” she recalls, describing those experiences as an excellent explosion of culture.

Even her cousins from Germany often visited her every summer or Janavi would go spend time there for a while. “I grew up around my cousin Micha Afkham, who plays the Viola and now plays for the Berlin philharmonic,” says Janavi. Growing up, her vacations were mostly “sea oriented” as she used to regularly travel to Goa and Alibaug. She travelled to Lakshadweep as well.

Choosing art

The first acknowledgement of her talent came when she was 16 years old, when a poem she wrote was published by a newspaper. It gave her confidence, and as Janavi went on to study the International Baccalaureate program after school, she discovered geography as well as art. Around this time, in 11th grade, Janavi was not sure where she was heading. “My father wanted me to become a structural steel civil engineer. He wouldn’t let me apply to any art schools until I had an exhibition and proved myself to him and showed him that I could sell my artwork,” she informs.

Her first solo exhibition, when she was 16, was sold out. She then applied to three art schools and got admission into all of them. Janavi chose the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) “I took up soft sculptural techniques and classes. Nick Cave was a guest professor to one of our classes,” says the marine conservation artist.

She worked in the wood shop for a few semesters and would help students weld metal and cut wood. “I learnt to make my educational experience as advantageous and pushing all comfort zones as necessary to make my art techniques what they are today,” says Janavi, who even took an entire semester in advanced lithography and etching techniques. She learnt the old techniques of making art on Limestone lithography plates.

Janavi would spend days in the museum looking at the art and making appointments in the prints and drawings rooms and Ryerson library to see things like Toulouse Lautrec’s sketchbook and Mies Van Der Rohe’s journal. “SAIC taught me is that there is no limit to learning and that I am an interdisciplinary artist and there will always be new tools ready, so I keep exploring.”

The deep dive

“I love to dive and started doing so 14 years ago. It was the idea of bringing a voice to the plight of collars and the marine world that fired a spark in me. What began as a passion has now become my duty and calling,” smiles the scuba diver, who completed has 234 dives so far.

Along the way, some scientists inspired and educated her with their discoveries and gave her an understanding that served as an inspiration to create her artwork.

The artist has also created large sine art murals throughout Houston, which can be found on Google Earth too. Her public works include an important commission from the Red Cross Society in Mumbai.

In the pipeline

So what more is coming? “There are several projects in the pipeline. My focus is national and global this time,” says Janavi, who learnt about great philosophers like Descartes from her grandfather back in the day.

Artist TK Sarasvathy creates hyper realistic paintings celebrating Indian cuisine

Or when you are relishing a crisp dosa does it strike your mind that it has more than 5000 infinitesimally tiny holes that give it structure and form? Imagine a self-taught artist spending hours and days painting these daily Indian foods onto canvases and transforming them into life-like art works? Hyper realism is the forte of artist TK Sarasvathy who lived across countries and places – she was born in Puducherry and lived in UAE and Singapore before leaving for the US in 2017 and she excels at re-creating Indian foods as part of her oeuvre. Hooked To Hyper Realism

Drawing and scribbling on paper using pencil were always of interest to Sarasvathy but, she never took it seriously. Once, that changed she started working on canvases and exploring her art.

While searching for unique subjects, Google introduced her to hyperrealism. Various works from renowned artists in hyperrealism world and especially in food like burgers, desserts, fast foods as art attracted her and she realized that, Indian food was not explored in the milieu.

The artist shares, “This is where I started my journey to depict Indian food as hyper realistic art. To start my journey in hyper realism art world, I didn’t have any references or someone to lookup for help. Painting is all about colours and texture along with thoughts of artists shown on canvas. According to me, any food/cuisine and especially in Indian food, will have amazing textures and colors and this is the inspiration towards my work.”

Sarasvathy studied the art of hyper real greats including Tjalf Sparnasy and Mary Ellen Johnson, to understand its intricacies and she them calls her inspiration. She adds, “I love their creations and they have influenced me a lot. This is due to the minutely detailed work depicting colour and texture of food.”

Her works are a treat to behold. From idli, sambar and coconut chutney to samosa, naan, gulab jamun, mango lassi and chole bhatura  she has created works of  well-known Indian dishes covering from North to South, using the medium, Oil on Linen, as her canvas as it helps to get a hyper realistic texture because of its smoothness and its great quality.

Food Fables

Every single painting takes Sarasvathy months and each work is a challenge in itself. This difficulty is not with the dimensions of the food or dish or even color, but lies in bringing those intricacies of details at every centimeter of the canvas to life.

“It took me close to 6 months to paint Idli, Sambar and Chutney and this was due to complexity of idli texture with tiny holes around and being the first painting to be painted in this genre. While eating idli all my life, I never realized it has so much details and hundreds of tiny holes. Now, I cherish eating idli more, knowing its value.” she laughs.

Similarly, when she worked on dosa which had 5000+ circles or on Gulab Jamun, she had to paint 1000+ tiny circles on seven Gulab Jamuns depicted in the paintings took her months. Every painting takes two to three months and surely is very demanding.

These challenges are something the artist relishes. “It is not easy to paint food as there is a very detailed output covering colour, texture, shape of the dish, condiments, magnitude and depth of vegetables among others.” she shares before adding, “When we paint a food/dish, all eyes that are going to watch it, have a pre-determined picture of that food/dish in their mind. As an artist I have to ensure, the picture of that dish in end viewers mind is matching with my work or my art replaces that picture in his brain.”

No Pain, No Gain, is her mantra. For example, her painting Papad has almost 1400 big circles and many smaller ones. “I have to make all these circles look like a puffed portion, it is very time consuming but it gives me immense pleasure for creating artworks intricately hand painted capturing every detail. More than anything, it's the satisfaction of achievement and the peace in my mind during every stage of that painting that motivates me.” she adds.

To start her journey in hyper realism art world, Sarasvathy did not have any references or help, it was all self-learnt. An artwork showcasing real-life image on canvas is an overwhelming feeling of happiness for the person behind it and this is what moves Sarasvathy to pay homage to Indian food, no matter the difficulties.

She adds, “What we cook is an expression of who we are and where we come from. Food is one thing that we all have in common and it plays such a central role in every culture, globally. This is the background to my project to bring all famous Indian dishes and my small attempt retrieves culture back into the form that is alive.”

Art as the center

The artist recently collaborated with South Asian Woman’s Creative Collective (SAWCC) public programming that provided a deeper context into the foods of the Indian Subcontinent and with The Cumin Club first ever PR/media dinner in NYC for 25 food writers and editors. Her work brings Indian food to the global diaspora showcasing the rich wealth and heritage of the cuisine.

Since her work is time-consuming, how does she juggle it with her young family? By being organized and planning ahead, she laughs and shares, “I am blessed to have children (Revant aged 13 and Nipeksha, 7) and a spouse (Nagaraju Palivela, Senior Director - Credit Suisse Bank) who are extremely co-operative and understand my work and my aspirations with art. They are very supportive and lend a hand, sometimes to take care of things. I plan their classes and activities in advance and ensure my meetings and work are done before / after them.”

Currently she started working on a small series of artworks with spoon and fork while she plans on exploring other cuisines too. Creative, Unique and Surreal, the artist is a perfect example of pursuing passion with all of one’s energy. Showcasing real food through hyper real art, the Global Indian captures the mystery of Indian food through her mastery over medium.

Muttiah Muralitharan played a pivotal role in Sri Lanka’s victory in the 1996 Cricket World Cup. A former Sri Lankan cricket player with origins in India, Muralitharan serves as a cricket coach and commentator now. For averaging over six wickets per Test match, he is widely acknowledged as one of the premier bowlers in the history of international cricket. Muralitharan holds the distinction of being the sole bowler to achieve 800 Test wickets and over 530 wickets in One Day Internationals (ODIs). As of September 2023, he holds record of taking the highest number of wickets in international cricket, surpassing all other bowlers. Muralitharan has been bowling coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad since 2015, and has coached the Australian national team on multiple occasions.

Muralitharan's grandfather had migrated from South India to work as a tea plantation worker at Sri Lanka in 1920. After many years he went back to his homeland with his daughters and started living in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu. However, his sons, including Muralitharan's father opted to stay in Sri Lanka.

Keshav Athmanand Maharaj 

Representing South Africa 

Keshav Maharaj represents the South African national team in Tests, One Day Internationals (ODIs), and Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is). Specialising as a left-arm spin bowler and lower-order batsman, Maharaj made his first-class cricket debut for KwaZulu-Natal, a coastal South African province in 2006. He started representing South Africa in Test cricket since 2016. In domestic cricket, Keshav plays for Dolphins and represents Durban's Super Giants in SA20. His father served as a wicketkeeper for KwaZulu-Natal.

Born into a Hindu family in Durban, Keshav Maharaj has Indian ancestry. His great-grandfather migrated from Sultanpur in Uttar Pradesh to Durban in 1874 as an indentured labourer.

Shivnarine Chanderpaul 

Represented West Indies  

Shivnarine ‘Shiv’ Chanderpaul is regarded as one of the greatest batsmen of his era. He played a pivotal role in the West Indies team's victory in the 2004 ICC Champions Trophy. Having captained West Indies in 14 Tests and 16 One Day Internationals, Chanderpaul, a left-handed batsman is popular for his distinctive batting stance. Chanderpaul holds the 10th position in the list of highest run-scorers in international cricket and eighth position in Test cricket. For accumulating 20,000 runs in international cricket, he was honoured as one of the five Cricketers of the Year by the Wisden Cricketers' Almanack in 2008 and was bestowed with Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy (ICC Cricketer of the Year) from the International Cricket Council. He was inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame in 2022.

Born to Indo-Guyanese parents Kamraj and Uma Chanderpaul at Unity Village in Guyana, Shivnarine Chanderpaul's cricketing talent was nurtured by his father, Kamaraj. His family's roots trace back to India, from where his ancestors moved to the West Indies as indentured labourers. Currently, Chanderpaul serves as the head coach of the USA senior women's and the USA Under-19 women's teams.

Ish Sodhi 

Representing New Zealand 

Inderbir Singh popularly known as ‘Ish’ Sodhi, represents New Zealand’s national cricket team across all formats and plays for Canterbury in domestic cricket. Sodhi, a right-arm leg-spinner and right-handed batsman, achieved the top-ranking for T20I bowlers in January 2018, rising from the 10th position at the conclusion of the preceding year.

Originating from Punjab, Sodhi was born in Ludhiana, into a Sikh family. He migrated to Papatoetoe in New Zealand, with his family at the age of four, and attended Papatoetoe High School.

Hashim Mohammad Amla 

Represented South Africa 

The Durban-born cricketer is a former South African captain in both Test and ODI cricket who announced his retirement last year. Amla achieved the distinction of being the fastest cricketer to reach 3000, 4000, 6000, and 7000 ODI runs, and the second fastest to reach 5000 runs. He also holds the record of the quickest to attain 10 ODI centuries. Known for occasional off-break bowling, Amla is widely acclaimed as one of the greatest batsmen to have represented South Africa and is regarded as one of the finest opening batsmen in cricket history. A right-handed batsman, Amla claimed the record for the highest individual Test score by any South African batsman, notching an unbeaten 311 against England at The Oval, London in 2012.

Hailing from a devout Muslim family of Indian descent, Amla's grandfather migrated from Surat to South Africa in 1927. Raised in a middle-class household, the cricketer attended Durban High School. His elder brother, Ahmed Amla, also pursued a professional cricket career. The brothers played together for some time at the KwaZulu-Natal Dolphins.

Vikramjit Singh 

Representing Netherlands

Vikramjeet Singh is popular as the left-handed opening batsman. Singh made his debut for Netherlands at the age of 15. In his junior career, he represented the Netherlands national under-19 cricket team at Under-19 World Cup Europe Qualifier, emerging as the second-highest run-scorer in the tournament with 133 runs against France. Moving on to his senior career, Singh made his T20I debut for the Netherlands against Scotland in September 2019.

Born in Cheema Khurd, Punjab, India, to a Sikh family, Singh's grandfather had migrated to the Netherlands after the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. Initially working as a taxi driver. His grandfather later established a transport company. The family moved back and forth between the Netherlands and India for several decades, and finally settled permanently in the Netherlands when Singh was just seven.
