Jonas Masetti: Italian-Brazilian spiritual guru bringing Vedanta to Brazil

(December 4, 2024) Born in Rio de Janeiro to parents of Italian and indigenous Brazilian descent, Jonas Masetti grew up with a rich multicultural heritage. His family’s modest roots in São Paulo and the Minas Gerais region instilled in him a deep connection to Brazilian traditions. However, his life took an extraordinary turn when he encountered Indian philosophy during his engineering career. What began as a search for deeper meaning evolved into a commitment to sharing Vedanta, a profound tradition of self-knowledge and spirituality, with the world.

Jonas’s work has earned global recognition, including from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In 2021, Modi mentioned Jonas in his widely followed Mann Ki Baat program, commending his efforts in popularizing the Bhagavad Gita and Vedanta among Brazilians and called him the ambassador of Vedic culture. Jonas recently met the Indian Prime Minister during the latter’s recent visit to Rio de Janeiro. On this occasion, Jonas and his team presented a captivating Sanskrit rendition of the Ramayana. Later the PM took to twitter, once again turning the world’s attention on Jonas.

Vedanta – a timeless philosophy

“My understanding is that Vedic tradition has so many tools for the well-being of humanity,” believes the Italian-Brazilian guru of Vedanta.

Vedanta is one of the schools of Indian philosophy, rooted in the teachings of the Vedas, which are ancient sacred scriptures of India. The word ‘Vedanta’ literally means “the end of the Vedas, signifying both the culmination of Vedic thought and the philosophical insights derived from the later part of the Vedas, particularly the Upanishads. Vedanta explores deep questions about the nature of reality, the self, and the ultimate purpose of life.

It offers multiple paths to self-realization, allowing individuals to align with their temperament and abilities. The paths are Jnana Yoga (path of knowledge), Bhakti Yoga (path of devotion), Karma Yoga (path of action) and Raja Yoga (path of meditation).

“When I chose Vedanta, I saw it as a means of knowledge and a tool for knowing myself. In the course, I got to learn about Indian culture and temples. I realised I belonged to that. My students are from all the religions,” remarked Jonas in an interview highlighting how Vedanta transcends religious boundaries. “You don’t have to be a Hindu to practice such things. When you go to an Ayurveda doctor, he doesn’t ask about your religion before treating you. Same way, the Vedanta teacher is not asked where you belong.”

From engineering to spirituality: A life transformed

Jonas discovered yoga and Vedanta in the early 2003 while searching for answers to a growing sense of dissatisfaction with his life, despite having a successful career as a mechanical engineer. “I had everything that a Western society needs to have. I had family, friends and money. I used to go to parties but I was not feeling fulfilled. Also, the people I knew had a lot of trouble, “he said, “I felt what the Western ideology was proposing to me wasn’t going to give me fulfilment.”

The quest to explore beyond the material world, led Jonas to meet Santosh Vallury, an Indian yogi who had recently moved to Brazil at that time. “I had the privilege and good fortune to have many one-to-one sessions with him,” Jonas recalled.

This relationship sparked Jonas’s interest in Indian spirituality and led him to the U.S. to meet Swami Dayananda Saraswati, a revered teacher of Vedanta. At an ashram in Saylorsburg, Pennsylvania, Jonas experienced the transformative power of Indian wisdom through Vedic teachings and seva (selfless service). “After that, I was very into the culture because there was a connection which I felt deeply,” he explained.

Jonas’s journey of transformation reached its peak when he enrolled in a three-and-a-half-year residential course at Arsha Vidya Gurukulam in Coimbatore. “For me, the three-year course was fundamental.” He felt as if he is a completely new person. “It was like being born again.” The immersive program shaped him into an Acharya (master) of Vedanta, and he returned to Brazil as a teacher.

Establishing Vishva Vidya: A Vedic oasis in Brazil

In 2014, Jonas founded Vishva Vidya, an institute dedicated to preserving and sharing the teachings of Vedanta in Brazil. Located in the scenic hills of Petropolis, near Rio de Janeiro, the institute offers classes, retreats, and immersive learning experiences. Its name, meaning ‘universal knowledge’ in Sanskrit, reflects Jonas’s belief in the inclusivity of Vedic teachings.

He has also adopted a hybrid model to reach a wider audience, combining traditional in-person sessions with innovative online platforms. The interactive learning system, introduced at Vishva Vidya, replicates the experience of a classroom through cutting-edge technology. “We have four cameras and 32 monitors arranged in a U-shape so hundreds of students can interact with each other and with me in real-time,” Jonas explained.

The institute has become a hub for Brazilians seeking to immerse themselves in Indian philosophy, Sanskrit, and the Vedic tradition, creating a gated community that thrives on learning and self-discovery.

Jonas also runs an initiative called Chhatralya in Brazil meant for underprivileged students interested in receiving spiritual teachings.

Acknowledgment by Prime Minister Modi: A global spotlight

Jonas’s efforts in popularizing Vedanta have garnered widespread recognition, including a significant mention by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his Mann Ki Baat program in 2021. During the broadcast, Modi praised Jonas for his work in bringing the Bhagavad Gita and Indian philosophy to Brazil, calling him an ambassador of Vedic culture.

The Prime Minister introduced him to the world as the person with perhaps the largest following of Vedanta in Brazil.” During that time Jonas had 150,000 followers studying daily. “That is probably how he came to notice us, and it’s a recognition,” Jonas reflected. “Being foreigners, there is a lot of resistance. Those who choose to go on this path (of spirituality) lack a sense of belonging. For us, it was very special because we felt that we were accepted. It was a reason for a lot of joy for us.”

This recognition took on a more personal dimension during Modi’s recent visit to Brazil. At an event in Rio de Janeiro, Jonas and his team presented an awe-inspiring Sanskrit rendition of the Ramayana for the Prime Minister. The performance showcased the enduring relevance of Indian traditions in a global context. Following that, Modi took to Twitter to reaffirm Jonas’s role as an ambassador of Vedic culture, further spotlighting him.

Translating ancient texts for modern readers

One of Jonas’s most significant contributions is his work in translating Indian scriptures. His translation of the Bhagavad Gita, completed over two and a half years, has been a meticulous effort to preserve the essence of the original text. “For every expression, I wanted the ‘original meaning’ so that the essence is not lost,” Jonas shared. For example, he added explanatory footnotes to bridge cultural gaps, comparing Kamadhenu, the wish-fulfilling cow, to Aladdin’s lamp for Western readers.

In addition to the Gita, Jonas Masetti has translated other foundational texts and plans to work on the Upanishads, ensuring that Western audiences have access to these timeless teachings. He is also an author, and the host of the podcast Vedanta Cast.

Inspiring a global movement

Through his teaching, translations, and cultural exchanges, Jonas Masetti has created a unique space where Indian and Brazilian traditions come together. His institution, Vishva Vidya has become a model for how ancient knowledge can thrive in the modern Western world, attracting students from diverse backgrounds and creating a global Vedantic community.

Jonas’s vision extends beyond teaching. He believes in the transformative power of spirituality to bring out the best in individuals and societies. He is now working to revive Brazil’s spiritual legacy, connecting it with Indian wisdom to foster a deeper understanding of universal human values.

Indian diaspora in Brazil

The Indian diaspora in Brazil is a small but dynamic community that reflects the historical ties and growing connections between the two nations. While the migration of Indians to Brazil is not as large-scale as seen in countries like the United States or the United Kingdom, their presence has been steadily growing, particularly in cities like São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Many Indians have settled in Brazil as professionals in fields such as information technology, engineering, research and academia. Additionally, Indian culture has left a distinct mark on Brazilian society through the popularity of yoga, Bollywood films, and Indian cuisine.

Universality of ancient Indian wisdom

Jonas’s journey from Rio de Janeiro to the ashrams of India and back is a proof of the universality of ancient wisdom. He has made Vedanta accessible to thousands in the land he comes from, proving that spirituality transcends geographical and cultural boundaries.

Taking the legacy forward

Born in Mumbai to Mohan Makijany, fondly known as Mac Mohan in Bollywood circles, Manjari was immersed in the world of cinema from a young age. Raised in a household where cinema was a way of life, her passion for storytelling was ignited by her father. Growing up, she frequented the sets of her father's films, but it was the plays at Prithvi Theatre that captivated her imagination. Watching the stage transform with each play sparked her fascination with visual storytelling. Manjari would often enter into long conversations with her dad and dissect almost every scene from the films that she'd watched, further fuelling her love for the craft. "My father was the one who once said that I had the eye of a director at an age when I couldn't quite fathom what that meant," she said in an interview.

Her entry into Bollywood unfolded organically as she stepped into the world of filmmaking at the age of 21 by assisting filmmaker Ayan Mukerji on Wake Up Sid. Two years later, she found herself on the sets of Vishal Bhardwaj's Saat Khoon Maaf, starring Priyanka Chopra. With no formal training in filmmaking until then, Manjari learnt the craft on the film sets.

Carving her niche

After learning the tricks of the trade from a master like Bhardwaj, Manjari's transition behind the camera came with the direction of the short film The Last Marble in 2012. The poignant story centred around a street kid crafting objects from metal scrap, garnered acclaim at international film festivals, clinching the Best of Fest at the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival. Thus began her journey as an independent director, armed with compelling stories. One such story led to her next venture, The Corner Table (2014), which not only earned a nomination for Best Short Film at the New York Indian Film Festival but also secured a place at the Cannes Short Film Corner. Yet her path hasn't been easy; she encountered many rejections before making her breakthrough. Not the one to give up easily, she used every rejection as a stepping stone to better her craft and bounce back with compelling stories.

Journey to the West

Her films secured her a spot at the AFI Conservatory Directing Workshop for Women in 2016, making her the second Indian woman to be a part of this program since its inception in 1974. During this period, her third short film I See You took shape took form; ultimately clinching the Best Short award at the Asian American International Film Festival.

This enriching experience landed her on the set of Christopher Nolan's 2017 film Dunkirk. Working with the maverick filmmaker is every cinephile's dream, and Manjari got this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity with the war drama. This wasn't her only brush with the Hollywood biggies as she soon found herself working with Patty Jenkins on Wonder Woman.

She used every opportunity as a fertile learning ground that helped shape her as a filmmaker. "When you're an assistant director or an assistant in any capacity, you're a fly on the wall, you're invisible. Whatever you are learning and whatever you are doing is pretty much through observation, and absorbing as a sponge. It's been an incredible journey being on these projects and watching some amazing filmmakers at work," she added.

Moving towards meaningful cinema

After gaining critical acclaim for her short films, Manjari decided to shift gears to feature films in 2017. An article on skateboarding in India sparked the idea for her debut feature film Skater Girl. Intrigued by the existence of skateboarding communities in India, Manjari recognised the significance of bringing this narrative to the forefront of cinema. Set in a rural village in Rajasthan, Skater Girl explores the caste system, social taboos, and age-old traditions through the lens of a sports film.

Hollywood Insider hailed the film for being a "meaningful film that provides food for thought for young audiences. "I believe local stories that are inspiring have a universal appeal and can transcend cultures and borders. There is something so resilient about the human spirit that when an underdog conquers against all odds, we all want to celebrate that triumphant and gratifying emotion. I wanted to capture that essence in Skater Girl," she said.

2021 saw Manjari bring to the forefront the first live-in-action Disney film that had an Indo-American story at its heart. For the first time, an Indian-American girl played the lead in a Disney film, this shattering all stereotypes plaguing the Indian diaspora. "When I came on board for directing Spin, I felt responsible and excited at the same time. Excited because it is one of the great opportunities for me as an Indian filmmaker to show our culture and portray the right representation of the next generation Indian-American community to the international audience, to the Disney fans. I also felt responsible because it was a chance to break all the stereotypes that are showcased about the Indian community, culturally. I wanted to get those nuances right," the Global Indian said. In 2022, the won was nominated at the Emmy, thus catapulting Manjari into a league of the next big filmmakers to watch out for.

Vienna University Philharmonic conductor Vijay Upadhyaya embodies global harmony through music

(September 19, 2024) When Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Vienna recently, one aspect of his visit went viral. His being welcomed by an orchestra and choir that performed Vande Mataram captured eyeballs across the world. The man behind the rendition was Lucknow-born conductor Vijay Upadhyaya, who leads the Vienna University Philharmonic and put together the act in three weeks! In an exclusive interview, he tells Global Indian, “We really had no time as we needed to get everything together on short notice, and given that it was summer, a lot of our regular musicians were unavailable. Putting together an orchestra and choir of 50 musicians, practicing, and getting our act together was challenging, but I was glad we could pull it off.” Pulling off the impossible is second nature to Vijay. With passion, perseverance, and an innate knack to harmoniously blend cultures, the musician has always used the transformative power of music to bring people together.

Musical roots

Vijay learned the piano at an early age from his mother, Usha Chatterjee. Music runs in the family, and he also learned to play the tabla and Kathak, cementing his intrinsic relationship with the classical arts. It was at his school (La martinière) that a serendipitous set of circumstances led him on to the path of music.

He recalls, “In school, there was a shortage of music teachers. The principal suggested that I take up teaching the school choir, as he knew I was trained in it. When I was 14, I started conducting the school choir.”

After school, he completed studies in English literature, economics, and history at Lucknow University. Thereafter, following the premature demise of his parents, he moved to Austria and studied at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz. Having studied conducting and composition, he gained a holistic outlook on western music.

Championing cross-cultural influences

While the initial move to Europe in 1987 was difficult (from the food and weather to the darkness), the musician found great support from the university, and after he learned German, things became a little easier.

Over the years, one aspect that really stood out in Vijay’s oeuvre of work was his ability to bring different genres of music together. Be it Chinese, Indian, or European, his music is uniquely representative of innovative interpretations. His talent and unique background allowed him to infuse performances with a distinctive flair, bridging Eastern and Western musical traditions.

His interest remains in undiscovered musical traditions. He points out the wealth of folk music in India and says, “Folk music is dying out in so many parts of Asia. It is a treasure trove of cultural wealth, but since most of it is orally transmitted from one generation to the next, it is in great danger of dying out. I have tried to find out the anthology of folk music and showcase it to a wider audience.”

Another unique aspect of his work is his ability to conduct different strands of music, be it in Telugu, Tamil, or other south Indian traditions, in orchestral arrangements. His deep respect for diverse lineages has ensured that his work highlights the universal nature of music.

A legacy of harmony

Over the years, the 57-year-old conductor  has had a series of triumphs. His first symphony, “Prayer Flags,” premiered in 2014 in Vienna and is based on Indian literature and melodies. His second Symphony, “Chang’An Men: Gate to long lasting Peace,” was commissioned by the China National Symphony Orchestra and premiered in 2017 in Beijing and Vienna. He was awarded the Golden Award of Honor of the Republic of Austria for his cultural achievements.

Classical forms, be they in the East or West, require long vigor and years of training. Is the current generation up for it? “We really can’t say, as art needs a lot of practice and the stresses of today’s life don’t usually allow a person time. There is not much support from the government, and it is a difficult field. But having said that, there are always people who find a way to make it,” he states.

As for the future of classical forms, he shares, “We are on the brink of a new era. Let alone the next century, the next ten years will be vastly different as AI is poised to take over. Beethoven has written nine symphonies, and for all we know, AI might write the tenth! We need to see how technology shapes the landscape of tomorrow.”

A global Indophile

Apart from being a renowned conductor, Vijay Upadhyaya is also an avid photographer (especially in the Himalayas), can also read Sanskrit and loves reading the Upanishads, along with hiking, swimming, and growing his own vegetables.

For someone who has been away from the country for so long, how does he keep the Indian in him alive? “My sister Sonia lives in Delhi, and I visit her regularly. Also, our temples, our festivals, and our culture keep us grounded. I get a great sense of pride that I come from an ancient culture that is a blend of art, language, and history,” he explains.

Vijay Upadhyaya’s journey is far from over, but his legacy is already well-established. He continues to inspire with his performances, compositions, and musical initiatives. His life’s work exemplifies the profound impact of music on bringing people together, transcending geographical and cultural boundaries.

Artist Anjini Prakash Laitu: The Colourman of Dubai

(February 19, 2022) It’s never too late to discover the artist in you. Anjini Prakash Laitu, 80, picked up the brush and palette at 60. Today, he wows the world and goes by the moniker Colourman of Dubai. After working non-stop for four decades, Anjini decided his retired life would be for himself, and his deep love for art. He did play with colours on fabric for years, but within the confines of his home. The simmering desire to become a well-known Indian artist kept nudging at him. His second innings in life involved pursuing art - His vibrant paintings, which are full of life and colours evoking positive vibes. Exhibited in the UAE, India and Nepal, this late bloomer has found his true calling. Even at 80, Anjini loves his brushes, canvas and colours so much that he paints around seven-eight paintings a month. Colours inspired by Mathura

Growing up in Mathura, Anjini’s love for colours began there. “My parents got us colours during summer holidays to keep us engaged. I never missed a chance to experiment with colours,” Anjini says in an interview with Global Indian.

Shantiniketan in West Bengal was a place where he dreamed about honing his skill and artistry. However, he couldn’t pursue his dream as his parents, (from an academic background) had a dim view of art. “My father was an electrical engineer and mother, a teacher. Those days painting was not a noble profession. So my parents did not agree,” recalls Anjini.

A different route

Bidding goodbye to the world of colours, he studied for a diploma in paper technology. He began working as an apprentice at a paper mill in Yamuna Nagar, Haryana, where he worked with the Thapar Group for 37 years across various locations and positions.

The year 1996 brought with it the opportunity to move to Dubai to work for a glass bottle-making company, which is where he retired in 2001. Reinventing himself after retirement, he got back to his first love - art. “After my retirement, I did fabric painting with some Dubai designers, but the desire of being called a qualified Indian artist remained deeply embedded in my heart,” adds the artist.

Rise to stardom

He pushed the pedal and enrolled in Sharjah Art Institute in 2005 to hone his artistic skills, and became a “certified” artist within three years. In no time, his work started attracting art lovers.

It was the Arab Cultural Club that gave him his first break for two solo exhibitions, one exclusively for canvas and the other for textile paintings. “This was when I entered into the art community as a fully qualified painter and there was no looking back,” he chuckles.

Anjini doesn’t believe in rules in the world of art. “I have been a painter who doesn’t believe in mathematics of 2 + 2 = 4. I advocate full freedom when we talk about art. My paintings should pass on positive energy, therefore the use of bright colours to make them lively. It’s also why I am lovingly called ‘Colourman’ in art fraternity,” the Indian artist explains.

All through his working life, he kept his passion for art alive by painting motifs inspired by nature on dresses, shirts and sarees. “During the 60s, Fevicryl and Camlin started fabric colours. I experimented a lot with them. My wife preferred wearing only my hand-painted sarees. This made me quite an experienced fabric painter,” he adds.

In Dubai, he got the opportunity to work on fabric painting with some of the biggest names in haute couture like Akee and Walid Attalah. Shirts, denim, belts and shoes, had his customised motifs on them. Recently, he showcased his hand-painted saree collection at a fashion show at Dubai’s floating hotel Queen Elizabeth 2. “I am happy that painting is not my livelihood. I paint for my pleasure and happiness. Rest is a bonus and reward,” he smiles.

Love for MF Husain

The legendary MF Husain greatly influenced Anjini. As a youngster, he would often travel from Yamuna Nagar to Delhi to meet his idol. “Either in Dhoomimall Art Gallery or Open Coffee House at Connaught Place. Fortunately, I also got a chance to meet my ustaad in Dubai when he shifted his base to the Middle East,” he adds.

Daily regimen

Three-four hours of painting daily, his weekends are for family. “I am also very fond of cooking, especially meat, or paani puri, dahi vada and some fusion dishes,” says the painter who likes a game of billiards once in a while.

“My plan for 2022 is to take part in the upcoming World Art Dubai and exhibit my new works on canvas and a fashion show of my hand-painted sarees,” the Indian artist reveals.

He’d like to leave his paintings to the next generation. Learning new things eggs him on, and he feels it’s important to let people, especially youngsters pursue their dreams, instead of waiting for decades like he did.

(May 29, 2024) Over the years, Haresh Adnani has skillfully woven his entrepreneurial spirit into Nodana (from the Latin word Nodus meaning knot), a bespoke carpet venture that elevates his family's three-decade legacy in home textiles by creating the most exquisite carpets. The entrepreneur has turned his carpet brand into his signature achievement while steadfastly supporting artisans in preserving their craftsmanship. To him, rug-weaving is an art form that demands precision, technique, and creative talent. The Spirit of Entrepreneurship Born in 1973, Haresh was raised in Mumbai, where he completed his schooling from Greenlawns and did his B.com from the popular HR College of Commerce. Marketing his garments meant he had to travel extensively across Europe which he truly enjoyed as it meant getting work done and exploring, meeting, and seeing people and countries with its various cultures and food. “Travelling has always fascinated me and to add to this, beautiful landscapes, natural beauty, and the richness of history across Europe made it even more worthwhile and exciting. With the family business growing quite swiftly, in the year 2002, I moved into the home textile division of the company which was also concentrated in exports,” he says.

Business Mantra

Nodana is a part of Adnani Exports Ltd. which is a family owned and run company for over 35 years of manufacturing and exporting home textiles across Europe. “We have always wanted to foray into the Indian market with something special. I was always fascinated by the intricate designs and textures of carpets that I would encounter during my research trips. This felt like the right moment to materialize my wish with the concept of customised carpets. Backed with the experience and expertise of home textiles we marched right ahead in this new venture. India felt like a huge carpet ahead of me to be walked on,” he recollects.

Artisan Cues

The artisans play a crucial role in the creation of their intricate and beautiful pieces of art with many carpet weaving techniques being passed down through generations within artisan families and communities. They often draw on this rich tradition of knowledge and craftsmanship, preserving and honouring ancient techniques while also adapting to modern innovations.

Carpet weaving is a highly skilled craft that requires years of training and experience to master. Artisans develop a deep understanding of weaving techniques, knotting methods, and design principles through apprenticeship and hands-on practice.

"Nodana has its manufacturing base in a small town called Bhadohi, located in Uttar Pradesh, known as the Carpet City of India. A lot of the artisans are normally contract staff and are given daily wages but at Nodana, our aim is not just based on commercial interest but also a social and emotional responsibility towards this invaluable art that's why all our weavers are on permanent payroll of the company. This helps in creating a family and oneness with the karigars which then eventually transpires in our work and designing,” he says, adding, “We recognise the legacy of this beautiful art and truly believe in it and want to take it forward and hence encourage the newer generation to be a part of this tradition. Our karigars take pride in their workmanship and strive for perfection in every aspect of the weaving process.”

Making the Journey Count

Being very passionate about his work is what makes him start each day with renewed energy and hope."This is why even if I have failed, I have still picked myself up and started from scratch. Results have never defined my direction. I believe in perseverance and hard work, and then sooner or later results will fall in place. Willingness to learn each day, no matter how many years spent in this industry is what keeps me going," says Adnani. His advices potential entrepreneurs to be patient, hardworking and persistent. "Rome wasn’t built in a day and so goes with every business. Nothing comes easy. There are no shortcuts to success. So, it is important to dream and put yourself out there no matter how hard it is," he adds.

Beating Challenges

Like every business, they too have faced challenges at different times. For most, it would be financial and mental challenges but for Adnani it is emotional as well. "Being calm, collected and determined to resolve the issue at hand helps in having a clarity of thought. Sometimes, I have noticed that we try too hard to find a solution, and if we just disconnect and view the problem from a distance, it becomes easier to find the solution," says Haresh, who believes in the concept of community and working together. "You can never overcome a challenge completely on your own. Personally, I belong to the old school of thought, and I treat and respect every person working with me as family, where they also feel they are an integral part of the company and contribute to the process of resolving problems that arise."

Looking Ahead

For someone who has been fond of sports and athletics, he admits that it has stayed with him through the years and he enjoys a good game of cricket and tennis. “Travelling is also something I am very fond of, especially quiet countryside places, close to nature. All this really helps me to unwind and relax. I also love going to the theatre and catching up with friends,” says Adnani.

For his brand, he hopes to take his business to great heights but more important than that is the invaluable smile of the customer on receiving their product and giving space in their home. “I truly believe in the saying that the customer is the king. With every small step, we hope to take this legacy forward for years to come,” he signs off.

Durga Puja, art, and activism: The world of Bhabatosh Sutar

(October 20, 2023) Bhabatosh Sutar is a highly skilled artist with two-and-a half decades of experience in Western painting techniques and a wide array of artistic expressions, including sculpture, and installation art which grace prestigious museums, galleries and public places. While artists and organisers in India have explored innovative themes, diaspora communities have largely stuck to traditional idols and designs.

In East Brunswick, New Jersey, the Utsov club, a prominent organiser of Durga Puja in Edison town, has taken a unique approach this year. To help them in their endeavour to do things differently, they engaged Bhabhatosh Sutar, the reputed Durga Puja artist acclaimed for his fusion of innovation and tradition, to conceptualise and create exclusive theme-based pujas, captivating audiences with experiential designs.

“I chose to collaborate with them because they were seeking innovation, which aligns with the kind of creative ideas I specialise in,” says Sutar, as he connects with Global Indian. This collaboration marks a new milestone in the career of the artist who is now in talks with a UK based club for their next year’s celebration.  

“For me, my Durga Puja creations go beyond mere economic benefits. They are a manifestation of my passion for conceiving exclusive Puja themes. This is why my focus is less on the foreign market as they tend to favour traditional designs," he adds.  

Building a brand of his own  

The esteemed Durga Puja artist, who has  recently launched his second book, modestly remarks, "I have had the privilege of conceiving 50 one-of-a-kind pujas, each driven by original ideas, in collaboration with some of Kolkata and Odisha’s most distinguished clubs revered for their theme-based festivities.”  

Durga Puja-related art consumes half of his year, while the other six months are dedicated to a diverse array of artistic pursuits. “I have not confined myself to single medium of art, rather love to explore different mediums to express my ideas to give voice to community issues,” he says. “I love challenging myself by redefining myself through my work,” he adds. Beyond his creative work, Sutar loves reading, writing, and actively engages in art for activism.

His bilingual books Mathe Ghate Shilpo: Art on Ground Zero, written in two parts, is based on his experiences in the Durga Puja industry of two and a half decades. Talking about his second book that got launched this Mahalaya, he says “It’s a coffee table book illuminating the journey of artisans who migrate from villages to towns for three months during Durga Puja, showcasing how their indigenous art becomes an integral part of contemporary celebrations. It highlights the mutual learning and knowledge exchange that takes place between these artisans and the modern artists in town.” 

Art for activism and beyond through Chander Haat

Bhabatosh Sutar is a key member of Chander Haat, a collaborative hub that supports cross-disciplinary endeavours, creating an expansive stage for community-driven art initiatives.  

 “Chander Haat has rapidly gained popularity for dedication of artists who are not just deeply committed to their craft but make use of it for making the society a better place by working on issues such as women’s empowerment, and empowerment of the downtrodden communities, and migrant labourers” he tells. They make use of art for activism. 

“Both local community and art enthusiasts benefit from this holistic approach, enjoying the creative process without being confined to the exclusive sphere of the high-end art world,” he remarks. 

Chander Haat's multi-faceted approach also includes engaging in Durga Puja festivals, where artists create idols that resonate with the wider community. It's not just about serving the gallery circuit; the primary focus is on enlightening the common people about the visual arts' connection to life.

The course of life 

Born in 1974 in Bangladesh, Sutar migrated to Kolkata as a seven year old. He and his siblings grew up in financial hardship as their father worked as a daily wage labourer.
“As early as the age of five, I realised that I had an artist within me. I loved to draw and paint” says the versatile artist, whose mother was creatively inclined and was very good at handicrafts and music.   

Bhabatosh Sutar graduated from the Government College of Art and Craft, Calcutta in 2000, as a student of Western painting. After passing out, the talented artist did not remain confined to just painting, and built his speciality in a wider spectrum of artistic expression.  

He has several unique art exhibitions in his repertoire, including the 2022 solo exhibition ‘Celebration’, which was a kind of a memorial to the difficulties faced by people like vegetable vendors, rickshawallahs and Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) workers during the pandemic. He recorded the stories of 64 such people and made their terracotta portraits. Their stories were even audible when one placed the ear near each portrait.

Sutar’s works grace prestigious museums galleries and public places in Kolkata, such as the Behala Archaeological Museum, Open Museum, Eco Tourism Park, and the pavilion of prestigious hotel, ITC Sonar Bangla. 

Since Durga Puja is a central focus of life in West Bengal, he developed expertise in crafting idols of the Goddess. “I am not just confined to creating clay idols but make use of a diverse array of materials like metal, wood, fibreglass and more,” he says. 

With his magnificent fusion of tradition and innovation, and meticulous attention to detail, Bhabatosh Sutar has been crafting Durga idols that are not just religious symbols but also exquisite works of art. His idols are known for their lifelike expressions and striking aesthetics, capturing the essence of divinity and feminine strength. The themes surrounding these idols stimulate contemplation for both the locals and the tourists who flock in lakhs to witness the festivities.
