Dr Nayan Kalnad: At the forefront of the digital healthcare revolution

(June 7, 2024) “M-Health, E-Health, we had lots of names for digital healthcare when I first started working in this space. It was very novel and a lot of people were sceptical,” Dr Nayan Kalnad says, as he connects with Global Indian from the UK, where he currently lives and runs his digital healthcare company, Avegen. “Do you remember when people said ‘digital banking’? Now, it’s just banking. You can do your banking work while you’re in a car on the way to the airport. That’s the kind of change we want to see in healthcare. There should be no distinction between digital and non-digital,” he says.

Seizing an opportunity

Dr Nayan’s first turning point came in 2007, when he was introduced to a technology that would change his approach to healthcare. It was an interactive voice response system, part of a pilot project to improve healthcare responses for HIV patients, many of whom avoided going to doctors because of the prevailing stigma. “At that stage, I saw the potential of what this could do, especially because due to my experience of working in clinics,” Dr Nayan explains.

Surrounded by scepticism, Dr Nayan decided to stick with his instincts anyway, and follow through on what he knew would come to become the future of healthcare. Today, Avegen operates around the world and its services have been used by over one million people globally. Their products include cardiac rehab apps, digital HIV-care programmes and maternity monitoring tools.

From medicine to pharmaceuticals

Born in India, Dr Nayan Kalnad was raised in Mangalore, and studied medicine at Kasturba Medical College. He pivoted to pharmaceuticals, joining Pfizer, where he worked mainly in drug development before moving on to Johnson & Johnson.”I was working to improve care delivery for HIV-positive patients in India,” he recalls. They noticed that patients living with HIV, especially in rural areas, had very limited access to healthcare The stigma surrounding the illness was the main cause – Dr Nayan’s team found that HIV+ people preferred to avoid taking health issues to a doctor. “We wondered if we could use IT to solve this problem.”

This was around 2007-08 and the team decided to try an Interactive Voice Response system. The user could call a number, enter the number corresponding to the issue and pick out the symptoms. The system would use an algorithm to give them advice and its database already contained information on the drugs the patient had been taking. “The other part was to call the patient and educate them on living with HIV,” Dr Nayan explains. “What medicines should they take, what food should they eat? We created a data bank, back in those days. It was my first exposure to using IT within healthcare and I felt like digital technology could help solve challenges that patients, doctors and nurses face.”

The digital-healthcare dream

Dr Nayan moved to London to study at London Business School, after which he went back to J&J. By this time, the conglomerate had set up a team to examine how IT could be used in the healthcare context. “We built products for patients who needed cardiac rehabilitation, to try and reduce the risk of a repeat heart attack and to reduce the time heart patients spent in the hospital.” The project was piloted in four hospitals – three in the US and one in the UK, “another critical experience,” Dr Nayan says. Shortly after, he left J&J to co-found Avegen.

In 2015, Dr Nayan and Neeraj Apte, an engineer with over 20 years of experience in software development, came together to create Avegen. A couple of years were spent exploring the best business structure and fine-tuning their model, before dedicating their efforts to making Avegen the go-to development platform for scalable digital health products. “We were like any startup,” Dr Nayan says. “Our initial idea did not work.”

That idea was to build a virtual call center for doctors in India. “We were handling about 1 lakh calls per week,” he recalls. “It was a call center, basically and it took up all the oxygen in the room.” While they were meeting a need, it was not the purpose for which Avegen was created. It was also difficult to scale up. “We had to stop, pivot and return our focus to the original aim – building a digital platform. That pivot happened around 2019 and we re-branded.” This was when they build the platform that Avegen continues to use – HealthMachine enables healthcare providers and pharma companies to build, implement and scale their digital health products. It’s their way of helping democratise the creation of digital health products, removing the need for a large team and extensive investments in software engineering.

Expanding the scope of healthcare

“Today we have digital health for pregnancy, HIV, TB, pulmonary arterial hypertension. We have around eight or nine conditions for which we build digital health products,” Dr Nayan says, adding, “We have hundreds of thousands of users every month and have deployed it in multiple countries, although our strongest presence is in Europe and India.”

Simply put, the idea is to make interaction easier, especially in countries like India where patients travel many miles to see a doctor. The pandemic only reinforced this need. One Avegen product, used by Europe’s largest HIV clinic, asks the patient to complete a questionnaire instead of setting up an appointment with a hospital. The information is sent to the clinic, where doctors can decide if the patient needs to come in to the hospital or not. “Often, patients come from very far away, only to be told that they are fine.”

Maternity care is another important pillar for Dr Nayan and Avegen. “India has a high maternal mortality rate and some of that is avoidable,” he explains. “Expecting mothers need to make regular visits, do blood tests and take folic acid supplements and follow an evidence-based care programme. We want to make it easier for them to do this.” Pregnant women need to download the app, which will tell them what to do based on how far along they are, and also connect them with experts. “Good health is not just about what happens within the four walls of the clinic. It’s about what happens outside of it. I can get my bloods done at a clinic, but when I go out, do I decrease the salt in my food, or get regular exercise? These are the main drivers of good health. We want to support patients outside and widen the scope of healthcare.”

Overcoming challenges

When he first started working in digital healthcare, people didn’t trust the concept. “The common understanding was that healthcare had to be face-to-face; they didn’t trust the digital tech, hence didn’t use it.” However, the COVID-19 pandemic changed the world’s perspective on digital healthcare overnight. “During the pandemic, digital products became essential to the functioning of the healthcare ecosystem,” Dr. Kalnad noted.

Avegen collaborated with government bodies and charities to provide digital healthcare solutions during the pandemic, such as supporting 30,000 HIV patients in Mumbai who couldn’t access their medication due to lockdowns. “We have come a long way since. In the coming decades, we will see digital health becoming mainstream,” Dr Nayan predicts.

The way forward

Despite the progress, Dr Nayan admits there is work to be done. “Scaling and integrating digital healthcare into the existing healthcare system is crucial,” he says, adding, “It needs to become accessible to everyone, regardless of their location or socioeconomic status. Digital health should not be for a certain segment of the population; it should be for everyone.”

This vision aligns with Avegen’s mission as well, which is to provide digital health solutions to all, irrespective of where they live or what healthcare challenges they face. “We believe that healthcare should be a fundamental right. We want to build digital health products that are relevant to the user, easy to use, and engaging. This is done through collaboration with healthcare providers, governments, non-profits, and other stakeholders to bring digital health products to the public.”

No less of a wordsmith herself, Shobha Tharoor Srinivasan is a celebrated children’s book author and has churned several books for top publishing houses in India and the US. She brought her mother into limelight when Penguin launched her first book outside her world of children’s literature - a biography on her mother, Lily Tharoor.

Good Innings: The Extraordinary, Ordinary Life of Lily Tharoor, has received rave reviews and garnered immense curiosity among readers to get a peek into the life of the Tharoors. “This story is definitely a tribute to my mother, but it’s not just that. It’s a tribute to all you women, your mothers, our mothers, our grandmothers, our sisters who hold up our part of the sky,” remarked Shobha at a literary event in Kolkata.  

The California-based author is also a poet, translator, editor and has been a former non-profit development professional spending two decades as an advocate and fundraiser for persons with disabilities. A celebrated voice-over talent, she received the National Award for best narration / voice over for the film Rhapsody of Rains: Monsoons of Kerala at the 68th National Film Awards ceremony by President Droupadi Murmu in 2022.  

Coming out of comfort zone  

When Penguin approached Shobha Tharoor Srinivasan with a request to pen a biography on her mother, she was hesitant. Undoubtedly, her well-travelled mother has lived a remarkable life motivating her children (Shashi Tharoor, Shobha Tharoor Srinivasan and Smita Tharoor) to think out of the box and reach their maximum potential, but ‘would we like to put all that in a book’ she wondered. 

The fiercely self-dependant octogenarian, Lily Tharoor is a strong matriarch who believes that ‘the only ground that is stable enough to stand on is the one created by your own hand’. She has had her own share of tragedies, travails and triumphs, but Shobha was unsure to document those.  

However, Penguin was persistent. Looking at the journey of the feisty octogenarian who renewed her driving license at 82, and was forthcoming enough to support her son atop the election campaign vehicles, had raised an interest in them to chronicle her life. Finally, Shobha gave in to their request encouraged by her brother who later wrote the foreword of the book.

“When I presented the book to my mother, she said, why you have written a book on me. What have I done that needs a book? You should’ve have written about your brother,” shared Shobha.  

The author knew that there are many people who could write a book on Shashi Tharoor as he is a public figure but Lily Tharoor’s story could only be written by her children who have seen the marvels of the lady and her amazing everyday story unfolding before their eyes.  

“My mother thought it was criminal not to live up to our full potential,” Shobha shared and used the book as an opportunity to inspire younger generation to ‘grow and act’. 

Storyteller’s voice matters  

“I have been a ‘storyteller’ and communicator all my adult life writes Shobha on her website. In both India and the United States, Shobha’s voice has been used in documentaries, advertisements, corporate training manuals, stage productions, travelogues, educational and journalistic projects, and audio books.  

Before becoming a voice over talent, the Global Indian spent two decades in the non-profit sector serving people with disabilities as a grant writer. Even as a grant writer, she utilised the power of words and stories to attract funders to programs they wished to support.

“I take this same love of words to my writing and voice career,” she shared. As the voice over talent with a natural and elegant speaking style and a global accent, Shobha has been the perfect choice for Silicon Valley companies looking for a voice to showcase their products and for their training manuals. While her books are part of some of the school curricula. 

Shobha has a home studio in Campbell, California from where she delivers many of her voice-over assignments for all types of media - from individuals to small businesses to large broadcasting organisations.  

Miss Calcutta’s journey of life 

Raised with the awareness of their Kerala heritage, Shobha spent the early years of her life in many places. “I was the responsible middle child with an overachieving older brother and a mischievous, younger sister so my childhood was full of learning and fun,” she said in one of the interviews. “We were diasporic Malayalees as my parents had lived from a young age away from their roots in Kerala, including abroad in London,” she remarked. 

From a very young age, Shobha had developed an immense love for literature and acted in Shakespeare and Osborne plays during a pan-Indian childhood, without missing summer vacation in Kerala every year. “We were raised to be as comfortable eating with our fingers on a plantain leaf as we were dining at the table with appropriate cutlery,” she shared.

During her teenage years the family was living in Kolkata. Her mother always encouraged Shobha and her siblings to make every minute count by delving in not just academics but a wide array of activities - dramatic arts to tennis to French classes. When Miss Calcutta contest happened, she sent both her daughters – Shobha and Smita to participate with the intuitive wisdom that they would be able to fair well. And, she was right, While Shobha got crowned as Miss Calcutta, her younger sister ended up being the first runner up.  

After leading a protected teenage life in Calcutta, Shobha moved to the US for higher studies. Starting from her bachelor’s studies there she went on to complete her master’s in English at Syracuse University. It was during those days that she met the guy who would be her husband, married him and settled in California. It has been four decades since then. Regular visits to India for work and family commitments continues. The multi-talented author and voiceover artist considers herself more of a ‘global citizen than an Indian or Indian-American'.

Aishwarya Sridhar: The 24-year-old documentary filmmaker who became the first Indian to bag the Wildlife Photographer Award

I look forward to spending time in the wilderness,” says the preservationist, who cherishes all those moments in verdant landscapes but feels most fortunate to have seen a tigress training her cubs to hunt in the wild. Sridhar is also the winner of Sanctuary Asia’s Young Naturalist Award, the Princess Diana Award, and is a Jackson Wild summit fellow (considered the Emmy of wildlife filmmaking).

The intuitive soul 

This Global Indian is now working on a two-part TV series showcasing the survival stories of the seven endangered primates of India and the folk that protect them. 

Each project engulfs Sridhar into a verdant world and its creatures. Straddled with a Canon 1Dx mark ii and Canon 5d mark iii, she sees wildlife with an intuitive soul. Queen of Taru, a film she researched, scripted and directed started off as a passion project in pursuit of the wild Bengal Tigress Maya in the forests of Tadoba, and her struggle of survival in a male dominated world. “After six years of tracking her, I finally gave her a celluloid salute. I learnt that animals are capable of strategy just like humans, and they are capable of feeling emotions, When I got to know that Tiger Queen of Taru would be airing on Nat Geo WILD, that felt fulfilling, I was grateful,” says Sridhar.

Art with a cause 

Going into unexplored territory led her to Panje, a wetland she has been visiting since childhood. Witnessing a gradual loss of habitat at Uran, her connect with the local fishing communities helped her in research which she presented in a 14-minute documentary on DD. “The most interesting finding was that the so-called ‘illiterate’ (local tribals) know the value of our ecosystem and its role in our survival more than the educated who so easily give orders for destruction. The film and photo-story helped bring a Bombay High Court Order protecting Uran, thus saving the livelihoods of around 2,500 fishermen. The Panje wetland is now recognised as a satellite wetland, and will soon receive the status of a ‘conservation reserve’,” says the eco warrior, who is also an emerging fellow at International League of Conservation Photographers, working towards policy-level protection for the wetlands in Mumbai. 

Sridhar was selected to feature on My Place on Earth – a digital series by BBC Earth in 2021, and is ecstatic about the episode filmed online with some on-field content pre-shot by her. A self-taught photographer, her initiation with the camera began with her father showing her the basics. A course by acclaimed wildlife photographer Sudhir Shivaram added context, though she giggles saying, “every trick I have learnt is from YouTube and by experimenting.”

A multi-hyphenate 

Even with filmmaking, Sridhar learnt by watching films on National Geographic, Discovery and Animal Planet. She has since self-taught, edited, presented, and directed an eight-part web series for World Wildlife Fund India. She also did a film for the state forest department and the Deccan Conservation Foundation on the unique and endangered wildlife of the Deccan Plateau. “During the lockdown, I ideated on inculcating the love for Nature in children using origami for WWF-India. I brought Nature indoors with the series titled Fun-Crafts with Aishwarya (digital),” says the shutterbug, whose series helped further with a collaboration with Discovery Channel. It partnered in another unique live show that focused on spotlighting endangered species in India through interesting conversations with India’s top wildlife photographers, filmmakers, and scientists. “I am one of the youngest presenters to have hosted a live show on Discovery,” says the girl, who loves to write poetry in her free time, no doubt inspired by her lush office. 

Her upbringing has instilled a deep conservation mindset with focused hard work. “From the age of eight, I have explored India’s wilderness. My parents have always encouraged my curiosity, and raised me with a lot of outdoor exposure which helped immensely,” she says, thrilled that she finally has incredible mentors.

Believing staunchly in the power of self, her transition from photography to filmmaking was game-changing. “I never thought of becoming a wildlife filmmaker initially. As I got older, I knew I would never be happy at a desk. So, I chose mass media for graduation though Mumbai University doesn’t offer any filmmaking specialisations. It was daunting. But I worked on myself every day, and still do so,” says the filmmaker, who now wants to try filming with 360-degree VR. 

A path peppered with milestones 

Each award is a milestone leading her to the next. For instance, for the “BBC Wildlife Your Shot Competition, the pictures of a bonnet macaque alpha male, flamingos in Navi Mumbai and a baby lion-tailed macaque with its mother were winners. Each picture is special, and documents a moment in nature that is otherwise overlooked”, she explains. 

A part of the award-winning podcasts Eyes on Conservation now titled Earth to Humans, by the Wild Lens Collective, connecting with natural history storytellers from around the globe enthuses her. “I hope to start my own natural history media outlet in India in the next decade,” says the 24-year-old, who is hugely inspired by award-winning filmmakers Beverly and Dereck Joubert, whose Big Cats Initiative and films have her enthralled.

Even though the pandemic has upended much travel, it is slowly opening up. Back to her wilderness address, Sridhar has some great filmmaking projects in the pipeline. She feels travel and Nature teaches one adaptability and patience. “With every animal/bird you photograph the strategy changes. You should be able to adjust to extreme weather conditions and be physically fit to get the maximum out of your trip. Being a Gen-Z kid, I expected instant gratification, but wildlife photography teaches you persistence. There may be times when you don’t see the animal/bird, and you may not get the photograph you have in mind, but it’s important to never lose your calm in these situations,” she advices. 

Mother Nature has been her constant teacher, and she hopes humans learn to protect their habitats. “Whenever Nature gets hurt, she repairs herself and continues on. In the same way, I try to be positive and keep working hard,” she says.

What’s more, the dishes are cooked in their original style, with no tweaking, even being served in the containers they are cooked in.

His other restaurant, Semma, serving micro-regional South Indian cuisine, headed by Head Chef Vijay Kumar, was awarded a Michelin star within a year of its opening. And, Adda, his restaurant serving classic Indian and street food, is the only one in his bouquet of brands that serves naan and butter chicken. Rowdy Rooster, serving Indian style fried chicken among other things, is also making its mark, Masalawala serving Bengali food is popular and Kebabwala, serving grilled meats and kebabs like you get in India is on the anvil.

And oh, he is also the first Indian from New York, the third person of colour, and the first Indian cooking ethnic Indian food to win the prestigious James Beard Award in the culinary field last year. Not bad for someone who doesn’t believe in compromising his culinary skills now, is it?

So, how has Chintan quite literally, caused a dhamaka in the US with his food which is spicy, rich with little known masalas, and includes ingredients like pig’s tails and dishes like Champaran Meat and Nalli Biryani on the menu? With a generous smattering of Hindi phrases interspersed, he says, “I have always questioned the norm and looked for the logic behind it. Yeh aisa kyun hai?  I also asked the same questions about the Indian food served in the US.” He doesn’t have anything complimentary to say about the butter and cream laden, bland versions of desi food that was and is perhaps still being served in several places. “Sticking to my beliefs has caused me a lot of setbacks in the past. But I knew what I wanted and that was to cook Indian food as close to its original recipe.”

Unapologetically Indian

Incidentally, he adds that the only complaints he has ever received about his food, few and far between as they are, have come from Indian Americans. The local people of different heritage who dine here relish his creations. “When an Indian American complained about my biryani, and asked me to change it, I refused. I respectfully told him that we have sold over 4000 biryanis so far. If I get only two or three complaints about it, I am not going to change it. You are welcome to eat at the place you say makes it better.”

Dhamaka has some dishes you would not even find in India. The tag line says Unapologetic Indian and the menu is a veritable culinary map of India. Kolambi and Kekda Bhaath, from the Konkan region is a rice dish cooked with crab and tiger prawns; Champaran Meat is mutton cooked Bihari style and the Rajasthani Khargosh is rabbit cooked the way hunters in Rajasthan would. The last dish is a sellout because they only cook one rabbit per day.

The integrity Chintan displays in his thought process is echoed in his food. Nothing but the best ingredients are used. He says, “I always look at the end product. It could be the most expensive ingredient if I compare it to others, but it has to be the best.” Speaking of the best, another star bestseller at Dhamaka is the Methi Paneer. In fact, Chintan has been known to declare that he will pay anyone who can procure paneer better than what is made in-house at Dhamaka. What is the secret of his paneer? He says, “We buy the entire high fat milk produced for the day from one guy and he only has a limited quantity. We make our own paneer with that milk. If there is any leftover from the main course, we use some to make Chenna Poda, the Odia dessert.”

It is this dedication to being authentic that in fact prevents Chintan from serving some classic Gujarati food, the food he grew up eating, and perhaps knows best. He says, “We do serve Methi na Gota and Makkai Panki, among others, but because I can’t get fresh green garlic here, I cannot serve Undhiyu (a traditional Gujarati dish that is a medley of winter vegetables, steamed muthias etc.). It is also why I cannot serve dhoklas because I am yet to achieve the level of perfection – which my mother’s dhoklas have. And though I have replicated the Mumbai pav, I think it is still mediocre by comparison to the original,” he says candidly.

Simple and Authentic

Personally, Chintan loves working with all green leafies and pure ghee is the fat used to cook all the food. He says, “When I make Saag Paneer, it doesn’t only mean spinach. Saag for us means all the green leafy vegetables, even the ones we get here. As for ghee, we use insane amounts of it to cook our food. I don’t believe in all that drama of dry ice and other such tricks; and I don’t create any new dish. I simply prefer to serve the best version of a dish. I like to keep food as simple or as complicated it is, so long as it is original.”

Speaking of simple, Chintan doesn’t eat at his restaurants, but carries food from home. “My lunch box is usually boiled moong or boiled chana, some fruits and a protein bar. Even as a family, we don’t eat out much,” he says.

However, he reveals that his favourite dishes served at his restaurants include the Gunpowder Dosa at Semma, Paneer Tikka at Dhamaka, Dahi Batata Puri at Adda, Biyerbarri Fish Fry at Masalawala and Vada Pav at Rowdy Rooster. His favourite comfort food though is khichdi and chhaas or buttermilk.

Another practical touch is the fact that there is no fancy serveware used at Dhamaka. Food is served in steel plates and the glasses are standard fare from Ikea. Chintan believes in letting his food do the talking. And talking it is, with Dhamaka having a waiting list of 400-500 people wanting a reservation every day.

With all this success under his chef’s hat; other chefs in the US, following his trajectory of serving authentic Indian food, with chillies and all the other bells and whistles, how does Chintan stay grounded? There is that brutal honesty again. “We as Indians celebrate too much. There are chefs who have achieved far more accolades than we can think of. My goal is to reach that level. I am happy with what I have achieved, but I wonder how will I get there?”

And the reason he is so confident about his talent is the setbacks he has faced in the past. “People only see the success; they don’t see the blunders that came first. But I am not scared of failure; when you have nothing to lose, you are free to do what you believe in.” And because of this very attitude, the Global Indian is happy that more chefs are following the trend he has set. “More is good, we should take everyone with us as we do better.”

Busy with several assignments besides creating new menus, Chintan Pandya is also toying with the idea of a cookbook that he plans to launch soon. We are sure it will be nothing but an original compilation.

Indian aviator Gopichand Thotakura set to become the next Blue Origin astronaut

(April 22, 2024) Nearly forty years following Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma's journey aboard Soyuz T-11 into space, another Indian is poised to soar among the stars once more. Entrepreneur and and aviator, Gopichand Thotakura, has been selected as part of the six-membered crew of Jeff Bezos-owned Blue Origin for its next civilian spaceflight. Gopichand will fly to space in what would be Blue Origin's seventh crewed endeavour and the 25th overall mission (NS-25) aboard the New Shepard spacecraft. Gopichand, co-founder of Preserve Life Corp, a global hub for holistic wellness and applied health near Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, is set to embark on a journey beyond Earth's atmosphere. The Global Indian will be part of a six-member team boarding a spacecraft for a trip reaching 100 km above the Earth's surface, crossing the Karman Line, the internationally recognised boundary of space. During the mission, the crew will experience several minutes of weightlessness before returning to Texas in the United States. This upcoming mission marks the seventh human flight for the New Shepard program and the 25th in its history. So far, the programme has launched 31 humans above the Kármán line, representing the boundary between Earth's atmosphere and outer space. The specific launch date for this mission is yet to be announced.

A nomadic life

Hailing from Vijayawada and educated in Visakhapatnam, the aviator revealed that his schooling was nomadic, as he frequently moved due to his father's business travels. "But that exposed me to various cultures and sparked my fascination with aviation at a young age," he said, adding, "I first visited a cockpit while aboard a KLM Royal Dutch Airlines. That got me thinking if I could also become a pilot someday. Thus after finishing my schooling, I pursued a degree in Aeronautical Science and Business Administration at the Embry–Riddle Aeronautical University in Florida, USA."

After graduating, Gopichand pursued a career as a pilot, navigating the skies in bush planes, hot air balloons, and seaplanes throughout the USA. However, after approximately five years in the States, he returned to India and transitioned into medical evacuation, assisting numerous individuals across 52 countries. This experience profoundly enriched his appreciation for life. "I was always very keen to become an astronaut," shared the aviator. "When I came to the U.S. in 2010, this meant either going via NASA or being a U.S. citizen and these were barriers for me. Blue Origin opened up opportunities."

To the stars

While it's not disclosed how he bagged a seat on NS-25, the aviator shared that there is no real selection process or criteria for this program. " I was hell-bent on getting aboard a manned mission. It is a desire to carry Indian blood to space," he said. Blue Origin keeps the cost of space travel under wraps, while a ticket with Virgin Galactic in 2021 was priced at $450,000. Blue Origin has offered free rides to celebrities, with reports of a seat on its 2021 flight being auctioned for $28 million. Additionally, some individuals have paid $1 million for the experience, while others have secured sponsorship.

As part of his mission, he will carry postcards and a variety of payloads, which will later serve as memorabilia. “I want to show that you have to have a dream and it is not really important if you are a scientist, engineer, or a pilot to be able to go to space,” the aviator said, adding, "India launched Chandrayaan and Mars missions at a fraction of the costs it would take internationally. With just a little bit more funding, India could easily be a pioneer in commercial space travel."

An avid traveller and mountaineer, Gopichand is all for space tourism. "The mission for Blue Origin or any other company is to make it affordable. What the affordable number is, we still don't know but to make it affordable, it has to start somewhere," the aviator expressed, adding that Blue Origin has partnered with NASA to establish a private International Space Station, aiming to expand space tourism and venture into this sector. "I believe that space tourism is where the future is."

How educator Dr. Neeli Bendapudi is empowering changemakers of tomorrow

(May 16, 2023) Even as a young child, living in Vishakapatnam, the seaside city of Andhra Pradesh back in the early 60s, Dr. Neeli Bendapudi had just one dream - that of becoming a world-class educator. As the eldest of three daughters in a family battling poverty, she witnessed the collective efforts of her extended family to send her father to the United States for a doctorate in English literature at the University of Kansas. The preciousness of this opportunity was not lost on the young educator. Defying all the odds that came her way, Dr. Bendapudi became the first woman and the first non-white person to lead the Pennsylvania State University in 2022. The educator, who values nothing more than her students and their future, brings to the table a wealth of life experiences and a strong set of values that will shape her priorities as a leader. The power of education

Dr. Bendapudi's childhood in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh was marked by her family's hardship. The educator called herself a “living testament to the transformative power of higher education.” Before her family came to the United States from India, she said, "We never had running water, or the confidence that you could just turn on a switch and there would be electricity. These things, no question in my mind, are in my life because of higher education. It's really a mission, a goal, a challenge, an opportunity to create those opportunities for the next generation."

During her father's four-year stay in the United States, their connection was largely confined to infrequent letters and a telephone call every few months made from the home of a neighbour, who had a phone. Despite her tender age, the educator distinctly recalls the difficulty of being separated from her father, while simultaneously recognising the significance of his endeavours. "In India, the family as a unit is super important, and the idea was, ‘We need to make a better life for the entire family'," she said in an interview. "It was drilled into me, all the sacrifices that go into getting higher education, because it’s not just about you, it’s about the extended family. My father came back after four years with a Ph.D., and it changed the trajectory of our family’s lives. So I decided at a very early age that higher education would be my path," Dr Bendapudi added.

After finishing her schooling, the educator acquired her undergraduate degree in English and her MBA from Andhra University in India, where her father held a professorship. It was during these years that she encountered and tied the knot with Venkat Bendapudi, now her spouse for 38 years. Both decided to chase their doctorate degrees in the United States and after being courted by numerous universities, they opted to enroll in her father's alma mater, the University of Kansas.

Following her steps, her two sisters also pursued their higher education at the same university. Eventually, even Bendapudi's mother undertook the journey of academia and achieved her doctoral degree. Sharing that her mother was the inspiration behind all her achievements, the educator said, "My mom is really a hero. While we were all in school, she also got her Ph.D. Having three small children, she didn’t get to do it when everybody else did, but she knew the importance of higher education."

The world of opportunities

Dr Neeli Bendapudi came to the US with one major goal - to become an educator. And her choices were again steered by her upbringing in India, having personally witnessed the transformation that occurred when Indian markets embraced competition, stopping monopolies from restricting affordability and accessibility for the less affluent consumers.

In 1994, the educator achieved her doctorate in marketing with a focus on consumer behavior. She began her academic career at Texas A&M, proceeded to instruct at Ohio State University, and eventually rejoined the University of Kansas in the roles of Business School Dean, then Provost, and Executive Vice Chancellor. "What I truly believe is that competition and free markets help everybody. Watching that transition — I wanted to study that. Marketing became something that fascinated me," the educator said. In 2005, Dr. Bendapudi earned her American citizenship. "That’s something my father instilled in me as well—this reverence and gratitude to this country. I hope all young people in this country get to watch a naturalisation ceremony. They won the genetic lottery by being born in this country."

The educator warmly remembers the honor of being asked to deliver a speech at the naturalization ceremony where her parents obtained their citizenship in 2011. During her speech, she referred to the United States as "the most extraordinary nation on the planet," challenging the attendees with the words, "I invite you to mention a single other nation that has such long waiting lists of people yearning to identify themselves as its citizens."

After working at Kansas University for about two decades, Dr. Bendapudi took on the role of President at the University of Louisville, in 2018. Throughout her journey, she held the position of executive vice president at Huntington Bank for several years, and she has also spent significant time consulting outside the academic sphere, working with entities such as AIG, Procter & Gamble, Deloitte, and the U.S. Army. "I’m very proud of that background. I knew I wanted to be a professor that could talk about how this applied in the real world," the educator said, adding, "To me, you would not want to be taught medicine by a doctor who said, ‘I’ve never seen the heart, but I’ve read the book.’ Likewise, when teaching business, I did not want to be a professor that said, ‘I’ve never done it.’ Not just teaching in the abstract, but connecting and working side-by-side with business people was important to me."

Rising to the top

Dr. Bendapudi officially stepped into her role as the 19th president of Penn State on May 9, 2023. Although she has spent the preceding months working intensively with former President Eric Barron, along with various administrators and trustees to grasp the intricacies of this expansive University, the educator is also lean on a broad spectrum of personal experiences that have equipped her for this fresh responsibility.

As the educator assumed the leadership at Penn State, her interpretation of the University's mandate is crystal clear: "Enhancing lives by producing and spreading knowledge." To achieve this mission, she has established an articulated set of objectives. Her emphasis on students is far from mere rhetoric. Her genuine concern is observable in the way she interacts with them. At a Penn State men's ice hockey match in January, she made a special effort to personally meet some of the students present, inquiring about their fields of study and their experiences with authentic curiosity.

"The truth is, when I interact with every single student, I cannot help thinking about the potential. You never know what this person is going to go on and do, and what this education is going to mean for that individual. So I love talking to students. My second big focus will be on faculty and staff—making sure we support our faculty and staff, that we are competitive, that we attract them and retain them," she said during her speech at the event, adding, "My goal is to continue to foster that sense of belonging for every student, employee, and alumni, and help them find a way to make this special place their own."
