Delhi, Dubai, DeMon: How CA-turned-author Murali Raghavan whipped up a financial thriller

(July 28, 2022) Like most Indians, Murali Raghavan was also taken aback when the surprise announcement of demonetisation was made by the Indian government in November 2016. It triggered endless debates between him and his group of friends. A late 2017 announcement that over 99.6 percent of the notes had been deposited in the country’s banking system, got the chartered accountant, who is the founder of the company CFOsme, contemplating how the corrupt businessmen and politicians get rid of their ill-gotten wealth.

It intrigued the Dubai-based chartered and cost accountant so much, that he began penning his thoughts around the subject. He ended up weaving a brilliant tale of big money and crime, which is sure to be an eye-opener. His book Riding the De(Mon) was launched on July 22. “The book is a financial thriller, delving deep into money laundering in India, particularly the methods used by corrupt businessmen and politicians to funnel their ill-gotten gains into the banking system. It touches upon various aspects including hacking into banks, short selling, and money laundering. Information is more powerful than money,” smiles Murali Raghavan, speaking to Global Indian.

The book talks about hawala transactions, benami accounts, dummy supplier accounts created by many companies to siphon off funds, overseas investment from Maldives corporation, etc. “The book goes to great lengths to explain these concepts in a simple way that makes it easy for all readers to understand,” says the chartered accountant.

He gives credit to a website called Script a Hit which helped him out with the book. “As I continued to think about demonetisation I fleshed out the plot into a six-page synopsis. I took a leap of faith and submitted my idea and it got accepted,” recalls the 55-year-old.

In-depth analysis

A lot of research went into the making of the book. This included speaking with several CAs on the methods used by persons to route their wealth (black money) back into the system without getting caught, while the IT banking security specialists came up with a plausible way for the protagonist to hack into the banking system to download records.

Recalling the unending debates Raghavan used to have with his friends, most of whom are sharp financial minds, he says the discussion mostly veered around how the government’s decision would benefit the country. “There were strong arguments on both sides. One of the key points of discussion was the estimates that the RBI would have a windfall gain of ₹4 lakh crores, as many corrupt people with a lot of black money in cash would risk losing the money than deposit it in their bank accounts and face the wrath of IT, officials,” says the graduate from Delhi University, who simultaneously pursued cost accountancy.

Like a good story, he explains, it twists into the idea of information being the most powerful asset for both governments and businessmen to stay ahead of the game. “It also then adds a personal track – who does not like to read about the complex web of lies between a Guru, politicians, women, and a corrupt social organisation,” informs the chartered accountant, who previously worked with leading firms like Ford Rhodes and Price Waterhouse.

Does his book touch upon the role of politicians as well and has he named anyone? “The book delves into business- politician nexus, which is prevalent in most developing and developed countries. The story is fully fictional and not based on an actual business person or politician,” clarifies the author, who is also the co-founder of CFOsme, aimed at helping small and medium enterprises optimize their cash from operations with improved financial ecosystems.

The city of gold

Ask the author, who grew up in Delhi, how did he end up settling in Dubai, and he quips, “My life’s key events were triggered by happy coincidences and my tendency to explore new things.” When he finished CA and cost accountancy, he started looking for job opportunities inside and outside India and landed a job as Finance Manager in Dubai.

The first innings of Raghavan’s career were as a finance professional with corporate companies where he learnt and managed formal skills of financial operations. In his second innings, coincidently at the same time when India was shaking with the announcement of demonetisation, he took another leap of faith to become an entrepreneur. “The premise of CFOsme is to reduce waste and optimise cash – my outlook was changing the same time as the book was taking shape,” says the chartered accountant, whose wife is the Vice President of Emirates Airlines. While their son is interning for a gas company, their daughter will be completing her undergraduate from the UK in August.

Understanding the bigger picture

So what does he make of defaulters like Nirav Modi, Mehul Choksi, or Vijay Mallya? “I think it is wrong to focus on a few defaulters but look at the larger picture and the total figure of non-performing assets in the banking system. While I am no expert, the fact that both domestic and foreign rating agencies upgraded the outlook of the banking sector of India gives me great comfort that the banks are not facing major headwinds from losses from defaulters,” explains the man, whose experience with MNCs in retail and wholesale distribution, Information Technology, real estate and hotel development, risk management, and Insurance gives him a wide range of skills and experience.

He however feels that with India being a democracy with a large population, businessmen will continue to seek favours from politicians. “Corrupt politicians- businessmen nexus and money laundering is prevalent across the world and India is no exception,” says the chartered accountant, who was quite flabbergasted by the news report that said the current French President helped a US multinational while he was the Economy Minister. “In the US, the nexus between politicians and businessmen is very strong and is apparent from the strength of the various lobby groups. India, as a growing economy and a democracy, wherein elections have to be held every five years, also faces similar challenges,” says Raghavan, who went to Delhi Tamil Education Association senior secondary school.

Bright future ahead

Economically, feels Raghavan, India is at a cusp where the economic, labour, and other reforms of the last five years will start paying dividends. “I am quite bullish about the prospects of India and feel that it is posed to reap the demographic dividend. Overall KYC and other banking constructs have been strengthened – will it go away? Perhaps not. However, the system as a whole is improving and we have to recognise that,” says the chartered accountant on a positive note.

Raghavan visits India at least thrice a year. “I have travelled extensively across India and make it a point to attend all the functions of my extended family and friends. I have seen the country grow and its soaring international standing and reputation,” he says adding India has built a very powerful brand globally for its talent, use of technology, and ‘jugaad‘.

“India is an emerging superpower and it will become the third largest economy in the world within the next two decades,” feels Raghavan, who enjoys playing different sports and taking long walks along the beach.

That apart, finance minister Sitharaman has announced an open stack for the national digital health ecosystem, which means unique digital IDs will be provided to promote universal access to healthcare facilities. However, according to Vijay Anand, founder of the Startup Centre, also popularly known as the Startup Guy, “the open stack feature seems promising, but iSPIRT has already been working on this for years.”

The fact that the government has extended tax benefits for the startup ecosystem though is a welcome relief. “Things have been on a massive upswing in terms of the number of startups that have emerged and unicorns that came to be. This move was smart to not rock the boat and introduce minimal interventions this year,” says Anand, adding, “There are some issues that we still need to address overall if we want to make the Indian ecosystem competitive to global ones. There is already an ongoing discussion with the FM regarding these and a 120-point document has been shared, in consultation with startups and stakeholders,” he tells Global Indian.

A socially uplifting budget?

When budget 2022 was announced, many thought that it has missed social sector announcements. Interestingly, this is one sector that was highly neglected. Despite the pandemic creating a severe impact on the health, education and food security of the poor and informal sectors in the past two years, budget 2022 turned a blind eye to the social sector by restricting the spending that could contribute to improvements in human development outcomes.

Budget 2022 sees Health and Family Welfare that accounts for ₹83,000 crore, go up by only 16 percent. Calling out the discrepancy, Avani Kapur, a senior fellow at Centre for Research Policy tweeted, “Investments in the social sector remain neglected in this year’s budget. What has been particularly surprising is the low investments for health and also for some key schemes that were a safety net during the peak of the Covid-19 crisis. For instance, while there remain 77 lakh households that had demanded work under MGNREGS still to receive it, allocations for the scheme saw a 26 percent decrease over past year’s revised estimates. Food subsidy has seen a 28 percent decrease even as the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana providing additional free grains to families was extended till 2022. Similarly, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, sees only a ₹200 crore increase this year.”

Mayank Midha, CEO, GARV Toilets, is glad to see the government’s commitment to delivering basic necessities. “There has already been significant progress in this project since its launch in 2019 and the target to reach 16 crore households by 2024 seems practical with fresh commitment of funds. Providing access to tap water for every household will positively impact community health, women empowerment and socio-economic parameters,” says Mayank Midha.

Mental health for the pandemic inflicted

The burden of mental health issues in India clocks 2,443 DALYs (disability-adjusted life years) per 100,000 population. Lancet’s 2019 study stated that one in seven Indians are affected by mental disorders, and a survey by NIMHANS calls out a treatment gap between of 70 percent – 92 percent.

With this budget giving the health sector a robust boost, ₹4,176.84 crore allocated, this added focus on health infrastructure has been lauded by business leaders and the industry too.

The treatment gap for mental health in India is nearly 95 percent, and all partners, government bodies like NIMHANs, private partners like InnerHour, and NGOs need to work towards bridging this huge need gap.”

Optimistic about the passing of the Mental Health Act, the new initiative with NIMHANS and IITB in Budget 2022, Dr Malik adds, “It is very encouraging for those suffering from mental illness. It will increase awareness and provide early access to mental health support. We see this as a great step in the right direction and welcome it wholeheartedly.”

Tourism sector wants more

India saw 17.9 million foreign tourists arrive in 2019, while in 2018, the number was 17.4 million – seeing a growth of 3.5 percent. The recent budget allocation to the ministry of tourism - ₹2400 crore, 18.42 percent higher than 2021, is a start to revive the industry.

An industry that contributes to 7 percent of GDP and 10 percent of direct and indirect employment has been left unheard.”
The pandemic has seen industries struggle, and bailouts given to travel in foreign countries. This would have been apt for the Indian tourism industry. Balan explains, “There is more burden in terms of TCS for outbound travel. Back-to-back lockdowns and increases in fuel price have played a spoilt sport. The government has definitely come out with a Bailout Funding Scheme rather than loans to uplift the industry from complete closures.”

As India basks in the glory of 75 years of independence, this first-generation entrepreneur has made his own contribution to the nation by developing 75 model villages in rural Maharashtra. His Swades Foundation, named after the widely acclaimed movie, Swades, that he produced in 2004, has impacted 27,00 Maharashtrian villages so far. Each of his 75 model village had to meet a set of some 40 parameters to qualify as a ‘Swades Dream Village’. These parameters were divided into buckets of 5S’s - Swachh (Clean), Sundar (Beautiful), Swasthya (Access to Health Care), Sakshar (Educated), and Saksham (Self-Reliant).

Every rural household in these 75 model villages has access to an individual toilet, potable drinking water through taps at home, access to healthcare services, education and a diverse range of livelihoods, thanks to Ronnie and Zarina’s relentless efforts to make a difference. Inspired by the success, the philanthropic couple look forward to scaling up by building 750 dream villages across Maharashtra and beyond in the years to come.

The foundation 

With the belief that India will witness a real growth story only when the rural population is empowered to make choices and transform their own lives, Ronnie founded SHARE (Society to Heal Aid Restore Educate) two decades ago.   

SHARE was renamed the Swades Foundation after the success of the Shahrukh Khan starrer whose character was somewhat based on Ronnie’s urge to give back. The foundation has been working with the mission to empower one million lives through 360-degree development across health, education, water, sanitation and economic growth. Ronnie aspires to create a development model that can be replicated across India and the world.

If not now, then when? — If not here, then where? — If not you, then who?”  

Asks Ronnie in his message on Swades Foundation’s website.   

Then and now 

Famous for founding the media conglomerate, UTV Motion Pictures, the first-generation entrepreneur, Ronnie started out in 1980’s with a capital of ₹37,000, and a small team in a tiny basement office in Mumbai.  Over the course of a career spanning three decades, he has constantly demonstrated creativity, innovation and a strong business acumen in his multiple business ventures to reach the pinnacle.  

His foundation, with a 350-member strong team and more than 1,000 volunteers strives to find and execute solutions to the multiple challenges that rural India is facing. The Screwvalas are working on a collaborative model, tying up with multiple partners which include NGOs, other foundations, the government and corporates to change the rural picture of Maharashtra.

With the determination to create communities that will have the ability to contribute substantially to India’s growth story, Swades is active in two thousand villages and is working on water, sanitation, health, education and livelihood opportunities. Some 471,000 people have been impacted so far.  

Glitzy childhood despite limited resources 

Ronnie had the sharp mind of an entrepreneur from the very beginning. Born into a Parsi family, he grew up in a tiny house in Mumbai opposite Novelty Cinema, then one of the city’s most famous cinema halls, which hosted red carpet premieres of movies. His veranda was the ideal place to have the fulfilling glance of superstars attending film premiers. At just 10, little Ronnie started selling tickets to people to stand in his balcony, from where they could catch a glimpse of the stars and take pictures. When the little entrepreneur decided to branch out into selling visitors snacks, his plans were thwarted sternly by his grandparents.

His entrepreneurial spirit remained intact, however and young Ronnie continued to produce a stream of ideas to make money. He would even organise events in his locality and make some money from them. Talking about his childhood he writes in his book, "I lived there (opposite to Novelty Cinema) until sixteen, privileged enough to go to a school where most of my classmates came in cars while I waited forty-five minutes for the B.E.S.T bus to arrive."

From abroad to India 

As he grew up, he tried his hand at theatre, and many innovative business ideas, which not only found success but gave the people of India a new set of experiences. During a trip to the UK to enhance his television anchoring skills, Ronnie visited a toothbrush manufacturing plant with his father, who was there on work as employee of a personal care company.

When he discovered that factory owners were about to decommission two machines that were in pretty good condition, he came up with an idea of his own. With little know-how and even less money in hand, Ronnie took a big business risk, shipping the machines to India. For the next few months, he worked to bring big brands like Colgate and P&G on board as purchasers of the toothbrushes manufactured with his UK-made machine. The entrepreneur was able to sell more than 5 lakh tooth brushes in the first year.  

Pioneering cable TV revolution of India 

In addition to pioneering initiatives in many industries, the Global Indian introduced cable TV in India at a time when people did not know anything beyond Doordarshan. His pilot project in Mumbai of introducing the idea of remote control run TV had failed initially, despite his extensive efforts of door-to-door visits to make people understand the new technology. People were just not ready for the idea, mainly because it was so expensive.

Ronnie began collaborating with hotels, which installed cable TV in their room. He grew his potential customer base in this way, as guests from these hotels decided they wanted the technology at home, too. Charging ₹200 per month for a connection he had soon enjoyed a customer base of thousands of households. He also produced ‘Shanti’, India’s first daily television drama, inspired by the hugely popular soap operas in the West. His desi kids’ channel, Hungama, telecasted anime shows like Doraemon and Shin-chan were other international concepts he brought to India.  

Life as glamorous as the movies  

Ronnie Screwvala’s UTV produced and distributed more than 60 movies, most of which have been big box office successes. He sold UTV to Disney in 2012 for a whopping ₹2,000 crores. 

Moving on from films to education he co-founded upGrad, an online education platform focused at providing industry-relevant programs specifically for working professionals. He turned writer in 2015 with his first autobiography, Dream with your eyes Open: An Entrepreneurial Journey. His second book, Skill It, Kill It, was released last year.

Ronnie’s love for telling stories did not die after he sold off UTV Motion Pictures, and he started a new company, RSVP Movies, that has released films like Uri- the surgical strike, and the Sky is pink. Apart from running other businesses the philantropreneur is a sports buff. He not only plays kabbadi, he also owns a Kabbadi team called U Mumba. 

In his book Dream with Your Eyes Open, he writes “Risk isn’t about rushing headlong into uncertain situations. It means pushing the envelope when others want to take the safe route, and caring about potential rewards than possible losses.” With this attitude, the ace entrepreneur has gained enough to make life rewarding for not only himself but lakhs of people in villages of India.

Google’s $100 million man: YouTube names Neal Mohan as CEO

February 18, 2023) In 2011, Twitter was in turmoil. They needed someone to revamp the product and bring in advertisers - a chief product officer, essentially. Board member David Rosenblatt had just the man in mind: Neal Mohan. So, in 2013, Twitter made him an offer and it seemed like things were going according to plan. Then Neal said no. Google had written him a big, fat cheque - $100 million in stock options, to be exact.  Neal Mohan, the man described by Richard Frankel, his former boss, as a "high-end customer support representative," was now Silicon Valley's most valuable asset. And clearly, he has lived up to expectations. On February 17, when Susan Wojcicki announced that she was stepping down, Indian-American Neal Mohan was appointed as YouTube's new CEO. Life as YouTube's Chief Product Officer

He's more than earned his stripes. Ever since he took over as YouTube's Chief Product Officer in 2015, Neal has played a pivotal role in some of the company's top products. He is the driving force behind YouTube TV, YouTube Shorts, YouTube Premium (formerly Red), and YouTube Music.

"In a most fundamental way, my job is twofold. I'm responsible for all our products - the YouTube experience on mobile phones, desktops, laptops and large living room screens - everything that viewers use to connect with their favourite creators," he told Lew Later last year. Then, there "things that creators use - this includes YouTubers, musicians, artists and traditional media companies." Finally, there he is responsible for "trust and safety, community guidelines - the rules of the road, so to speak." Simply put, it comes down to "helping my teams make the best deicisions on behalf of that ecosystem. It includes our viewers, users, creators and advertisors."

Early life

Mohan was born in India in 1975 and moved to the US a few years later. "I had always been interested in technology, even before college," he said, in a 2022 interview with Greylock. "I always knew that working would computers would be my career path." His ambition took him to Stanford University, where he studied Electrical Engineering "and a lot of CS classes, basically."

He graduated from Stanford and entered the workforce at what he describes as a "pivotal moment." This was the start of the golden age in Silicon Valley - "the dawn of the internet, really. Netscape had just come out with its browsers and was a Silicon Valley startup. There were lots of companies excited about making the transition." It was a fortunate turn of events for him. "When you're able to start your career at the inflexsion of a big technology change, there are lots of interesting opportunities.

Mohan began his career as a 'management consultant, working with tech businesses and finding ways to bring this new technology, the 'internet' to Fortune 500 companies. He realised, "very quickly," that he wanted to be part of these startups himself. He did a short stint at Andersen Consulting (Accenture) and in 1997, So, he joined Net Gravity, kickstarting his career in the technology business. That company was acquired by advertising startup DoubleClick later that year. It's where he met David Rosenblatt. He played a pivotal role in Google's $3.1 billion acquisition of the company.

This was the great revolution in democratising information. "It's about fundamentally powering the creation of and consumption of all this information," regardless of whether the user was on a low-speed dial-up in some corner of the world, or a high-speed connection in Silicon Valley. "You have access to the same technology," he said.

That's where DoubleClick Inc. came in - if information was to be provided to everyone with access to an internet connection, preferably for free, it needed a sustainable revenue model. The internet was a medium too, just like print or TV - and those ran on ads. DoubleClick was at the forefront of developing and providing Internet ad services, through technology products and services that were sold to ad agencies and the mass media. They went on to work with businesses like Microsoft, General Motors, Coca-Cola, Apple Inc, Nike and L'Oreal.

He was pivotal to developing the company's ad products and helping to grow YouTube revenue. Mohan became a well-known name in Silicon Valley and when Twitter needed a new man to revamp their product, which was falling apart, they turned to the internet ads savant. Mohan has played an important role in some of Google's most important ad products, including AdWords, DoubleClick and Google Analytics. He was also responsible for the automation of buying and selling digital ad inventory."

Transforming YouTube

In 2015, Mohan joined Alphabet Inc subsidiary YouTube as its Chief Product officer. He has been responsible for the livestreaming service YouTube TV, YouTube Music, YouTube Premium and YouTube Shorts.

Under him, YouTube's creator economy boomed. In 2022, Indian YouTubers were contributing around Rs 6,800 crores annually to the country's GDP. "The creator economy in India is truly flourishing," Mohan remarked. The monetisation model changed the content creation site - as of 2019, there were two billion users on YouTube, watching 1 billion hours of videos every day. YouTube ad revenues were around $19.77 billion in 2020.

With Susan Wojcicki announcing her resignation to focus on her health and personal life, Mohan will take over as YouTube's fourth CEO.

Life at home

Mohan is married to Heema Sareem Mohan, who is a spokesperson for Democratic State Senator Joe Simitian. She specialises in reforming the juvenile justice system and education policies and does extensive non-profit work. Born and raised in New York, she mvoed to Silicon Valley to be with her husband.

The couple resides in the Bay Area, in one of San Francisco's most upscale localities, with their three kids.

(February 24, 2024) As a student of B.Tech at Vellore Institute of Technology, Anand Prakash's journey into the world of cybersecurity began in 2012 when a Twitter post mentioning a bounty from Facebook left him intrigued. Curious, he started learning more about bug bounty hunting, landed his first bounty a year later, and soon became an ethical hacker. A decade later, Anand Prakash made headlines globally for selling his startup Pingsafe to NSE-listed US-based cybersecurity company SentinelOne for a whopping $100 million. Founded in 2021, PingSafe secured $3.3 million in funding from Peak XV's Surge in 2023, and the latest acquisition is seen as one of the fastest and most successful exits for a fairly new startup. Barclay in a note to clients said, "SentinelOne announced this morning that it will acquire PingSafe, a company that operates in the cloud security platform space, for$100M, with about half in cash and half in stock," adding, "Founded in 2022, PingSafe is a relatively new and small security company with <100 employees and ~50+ customers, mostly in India." "We are redefining cloud security," is written in bold letters as one is greeted by the PingSafe website. A startup that's "creating the next-generation cloud security platform powered by attackers' intelligence, providing coverage for vulnerabilities that traditional security solutions would otherwise overlook," adds the co-founders Anand Prakash and Nishant Mittal.

It all began when Anand got interested in cybersecurity during his college days, and began bug bounty hunting - reporting bugs on websites and software, especially about security exploits and vulnerabilities. "I started in college when I heard about a friend who was paid to find bugs in Facebook’s systems, which sounded like fun," he said in an interview. In no time, Anand became one of Facebook's top-ranked bug hunters. "Over the years, I have found vulnerabilities on platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Uber, Tinder, Salesforce, and more, consistently working to protect the data of billions of users. In 2013, I was part of the early security team at Flipkart, where I collaborated with engineers to write secure code and secure infrastructure. I am the first Indian researcher to make it into the top 5 researchers in these companies," reads Anand's LinkedIn profile.

Over time, Anand realised that even the largest and most tech-savvy companies have a weakness that they aren't aware of, and in no time, the data of users can become vulnerable to attackers. "I could see a very clear gap in the market," said Anand, adding, "These firms were taking cyber security very seriously but people were still finding issues."

In 2016, he founded AppSecure India, a security auditing startup based in Bangalore that worked with more than 30 startups, including Paytm, Flipkart, and PhonePe, to find loopholes in their security systems. A year later, Anand was featured on the Forbes 30 Under 30 list in the category of Enterprise Technology for his efforts to secure the data of billions of users globally. "I have found bugs that, if misused by black hat hackers, could have led to the hacking of social media and ride-sharing accounts," he added.

Moreover, he pointed out that using cloud computing, which is the usual choice for companies to set up their computer systems, is making them more vulnerable. With cloud computing, anyone in the company can easily change its IT systems or add more services, like subscribing to software. This makes it tough to make sure there are strong cybersecurity measures in place.

The emergence of PingSafe

This led him to start PingSafe as a cloud-native application protection platform (CNAPP) - a software platform that simplifies monitoring, detecting, and acting on potential cloud security threats and vulnerabilities - with IIT graduate Nishant Mittal. PingSafe uses its platform to check its customers' computer systems in the same way hackers do. It looks for any weaknesses that could be used by a bad person. When it finds these weaknesses, PingSafe tells the customer how to fix them. It keeps testing the systems in real time and updates its methods based on what hackers are doing.

"Every organisation is at risk because of cloud misconfigurations, but other security solutions won’t necessarily pick them up," he said, adding, "Our platform can sit alongside the other cyber security products that the organisation is using."

In just a few years, Pingsafe was acquired by SentinelOne, making it the largest acquisition in the Indian cybersecurity startup space.

Born in a humble family of four in Rourkela, Odisha, Bibhu had a typical small-town upbringing. Most of his childhood went into climbing trees and playing gilli-danda with his friends. With no access to television in his early days, it was his mom's love for sewing that caught his fancy. At 12, his love affair with the needle and thread began in earnest when he spent hours cutting and sewing up old saris and tablecloths to make dresses for his sister. "She never discouraged me, but would kindly ask, 'Is it okay if I wear these at home?' When I finally made a proper dress for her, she wore it to some function and got a lot of compliments. That kind of solidified something within me, it made me believe that I could perhaps, do this," he said in an interview.

Though Bibhu was good at his craft, he was looked down up in his hometown for picking up sewing as a boy. But his progressive parents let him follow his heart. After completing his studies at the Municipal College in Rourkela, he set his sights on fashion. Unfortunately, in the early 90s, India had no fashion design schools besides NIFT Delhi, thwarting his dream. Meanwhile, his brother, who was studying graphic design in the US, encouraged Bibhu to apply for a Master’s program at Utah State University. After securing a partial scholarship, he moved to the US in 1996.

The American dream

It was here that one of his professors chanced upon his sketchbook and was so impressed by his work that she requested friends in the art department to let Bibhu attend live drawing classes. This enhanced his portfolio, and by the end of his Masters in Economics, he was certain that fashion designing was his calling. His father's advice ultimately sealed the deal for him. "He told me to close my eyes and picture myself 10 years down the line and see if I was happy with whatever I was doing at that time. That sealed the decision for me," he said.

He moved to the Big Apple and enrolled himself at Fashion Institute of Technology. But the expensive city was a different ball game for this aspiring designer - he had to act fast to get some work before running broke. Armed with a few printed copies of his resume, he walked to 7th Avenue and dropped them at top design houses like Tommy Hilfiger and DKNY. Luck was on his side as received an internship call from the house of Halston - a leading fashion house that boasts of clients like Jackie Kennedy. Mohapatra dived deep into his work and learnt every trick of the trade from making embroidery layouts to going to fittings. The exposure helped him pick a full-time job with J Mendel where he worked as the Design Director for a decade. During the tenure, he expanded his team to 20 people and established connections with some of the most prominent women in America.

Beginning of a brand - Bibhu Mohapatra

In 2009, Bibhu decided to branch out and start his eponymous label. But before the big move, he took a few months off to travel to Europe, seeking inspiration which came in the form of British-Irish artist and producer Daphne Guinness. She became the muse for his first-ever individual collection. Under the Bibhu Mohapatra label, the designer crafted some of the most beautiful couture gowns and cocktail dresses for high-profile clients across Europe, US and India.

For many years, Bibhu kept drawing inspiration from women with incredible personalities for his creations. "They don't have to be fashionistas, or anyone famous. They can be flawed, everyone is flawed. But their journey, what they stand for as people, their work – that's what is important to me," he added.

Mohapatra's designs have found their way to the big stores like Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus and Lane Crawford. It's a perfect blend of craft and modernity that has made Mohapatra a favourite with Hollywood and Bollywood stars. His client boasts of creme de la creme like Gwyneth Paltrow, Glenn Close, Jennifer Lopez, Rita Ora, Priyanka Chopra, Sonam Kapoor and Lupita Nyong'o.

But it was Michelle Obama's endorsement that catapulted Mohapatra's designs to the spotlight. It began in 2013 when Obama graced The Tonight Show with Jay Leno in a yellow printed dress from Mohapatra's resort collection, sparking a surge in popularity for the designer who has mastered the fine balance between sophistication and femme fatale. The clean lines, impeccable construction and a celebration of femininity is what makes his designs stand out. So when Michelle Obama exited Delta One on her maiden visit to India in a blue floral crepe dress by Mohapatra, no one could stop talking about the dress and in an instant this designer from Rourkela became a hit across the globe.

Coming back to roots

Bibhu has become a global name in the fashion circles, thanks to the heavy influence of Odisha's craft during the formative years of his life. "As a child, I was enamoured of colours. My mother’s jewellery, her saris, the pipli and ikat work from the region — all this stayed with me. I feel that my heritage gives me that edge in making my clothes more modern," he added. Over the years, he has used some of the textile traditions of his home state, particularly ikat, to create interesting juxtapositions and introduce the rich textiles of Odisha to the audience in the West. Back home, he collaborates with local weavers for various projects. One such was Make In Odisha Conclave in which he teamed up with state government to create a special collection as part of the Handloom Revival Project.

"I challenged the artisans to create new shapes, new prints and then mix them with modern elements and interesting colour combinations. We blended textiles such as silk and cotton. The idea was to see how creative economies can help foster pride in our heritage and bring economic prosperity to the artisans," he said. The 52-year-old also plans to launch a new project where the narrative of the artisans will reach the customers. "They need to know the people who weave these beautiful textiles. I plan to offer two designs to each weaver household and their job is to work with them in interesting ways. On a sari’s pallu or the corner of the pieces of home furnishing, they will ikat weave their names so that they do not remain nameless, faceless artisans," he added.

Mohapatra, who started his journey by sewing clothes for his sister to starting his own brand to styling Michelle Obama, has come a long way in this sartorial journey. He is one of those rare Indian designers who has put Indian designs and textiles on the global stage with every new collection.
