Cyrus Mistry: Growing Shapoorji Pallonji to helming the Tata Group

(September 6, 2022) On Sunday, September 4, 2022, business tycoon Cyrus Mistry was killed when his Mercedes rammed into a divider. The younger son of the construction magnate Pallonji Mistry, Cyrus was travelling from Ahmedabad to Mumbai when the accident took place. He was rushed to hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. Condolences poured in for Mistry, who was one of India’s wealthiest businessmen, valued at some $29 billion at the time of his death. He served as managing director of the Shapoorji Pallonji Group before he took over Chairman of Tata Sons in 2012. He succeeded Ratan Tata as the first first non-Tata to head the Indian business empire. In 2013, the Economist described Mistry as “the most important industrialist in both India and Britain.” Global Indian takes a look at the remarkable life of this business tycoon.

Condolences poured in from industry and political heavyweights, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Harsh Goenka and Anand Mahindra. “The untimely demise of Shri Cyrus Mistry is shocking. He was a promising business leader who believed in India’s economic prowess. His passing away is a big loss to the world of commerce and industry. Condolences to his family and friends,” tweeted PM Modi.

Tata Consultancy Services also issued a statement, describing Mistry as “a warm, friendly and congenial person who built a strong relationship with the TCS family during his time as the Chairman of the company.” Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also expressed her sadness. “I was convinced he was destined for greatness. If life had other plans for him, so be it, but life itself should not have been snatched away,” tweeted Anand Mahindra.

Mistry became known for his serious demeanour and his reserved manner. “In my four years of working with him, I have been to his house only for the annual party,” one member of the Tata Group board told Livemint. “He is professional and keeps to himself. But at the same time, his mobile number was available with at least hundreds of Tata group executives.”


Tycoon at 26

Mistry was born to Pallonji Mistry and Patsy Perin Dubash, in Dublin, on July 4, 1968. The Mistry family was one of the wealthiest in Ireland at the time. Mistry attended the Cathedral and John Connon School, one of Mumbai’s oldest and most elite educational institutions. He moved to England shortly in 1990, to study at the Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine. He earned a degree in civil engineering and then a Master’s in management from the London Business School in 1996.

In 1991, shortly after graduating from college, Cyrus assumed his position as the scion of his father’s construction empire. He took over as director, Shapoorji Pallonji & Co. Three years later, he became Managing Director. He was only 26 at the time. Mistry is widely credited for having taken the Shapoorji Pallonji group to new heights – the company employs over 23,000 employees across India, the Middle East and Africa.

 

The era of firsts for Shapoorji Pallonji & Co

Under his leadership, the company’s interests expanded from pure constructions to executing projects under design and build. They implemented complex projects in the marine, oil and gas and railway sectors. Shapoorji Pallonji & Co went on to construct India’s tallest residential towers, the longest rail bridge, the largest dry dock and the largest affordable housing project.

Mistry also oversaw the infrastructure development vertical, which began in 1995 with a 106 MW power project in Tamil Nadu, followed by the development of India’s largest biotech park near Hyderabad. They also made their foray into agriculture and biofuels before Mistry resigned to take over as the deputy Chairman of the Tata group.

The Tata connection

The Pallonjis are one of India’s oldest business families, with links going back well over a century. In 1930, Mistry’s grandfather, Shapoorji Mistry, acquired a stake in Tata Sons. His son, Pallonji Mistry, held the stake, which now stands at 18.5 percent, the largest block of shares held by a single group. In 2006, Pallonji Mistry stepped down from the board of directors of the Tata Group, his son, Cyrus, took his place. Cyrus himself had served as director of Tata Elxsi, a post he accepted in 1990 and remained in for a decade, until October 2009. He was also a director of Tata Power Co until late 2006.

In 2013, Mistry made history when he succeeded Ratan Tata as the chairman of the Tata Group, going on to head all the major Tata companies including Tata Steel, Tata Motors, Tata Consultancy Services, Indian Hotels, Tata Global Beverages and tata Chemicals. He became the sixth – and youngest – chairman to head the conglomerate.


Making history

Mistry wrote later, after his controversial dismissal which resulted in a years-long legal battle, that the proposal first arose in 2011. “After some exploration by a search committee (actually, Mistry was part of this committee also, by virtue of his place on the board of directors), I was approached by both Ratan Tata and Lord Bhattacharya individually to be a candidate for the position. I politely declined,” he revealed later.

Mistry was involved with building and growing his family’s own business, which was booming under his leadership. The Tatas continued their search, as Ratan Tata’s retirement grew more imminent. “The committee was unable to find a suitable candidate, I was asked to reconsider.” He found it harder to refuse the second time around. After consulting with his family, he “took courage to overcome (his) initial reluctance and agreed to consider the position.”

 

When controversy came calling

In late 2016, Mistry wrote a tell-all letter, saying he was “shocked beyond words at the happenings at the board meeting of October 24, 2016.” On that day, Tata Sons had inducted two new directors into their board, after the abrupt ousting of their Chairman. A furious Mistry decided it was not the time to remain quiet and termed the move “shocking and unparalleled.”

For four years, his tenure as Chairman of Tata Sons, Mistry had maintained the reticence characteristic of the Shapoorji Pallonjis, and didn’t give a single interview. His father, Pallonji Mistry was even known as the ‘Phantom of Bombay House’. As for Cyrus Mistry, he was once said to have stopped a media consultant making a presentation to ask him, “Do you know who is the chairman of 3M?” His point was simple – the company brand is more important than the personalities of those at the helm.


The big-league boardroom battle

When he was “replaced without so much as a word of explanation or being afforded an opportunity of defending himself,” Cyrus Mistry decided it was time to break the legacy of silence.

The action, he said, was sudden and the resulting speculation had done his reputation, as well as that of the Tata Group, “immeasurable harm,” he wrote.

Saying that he had taken on many problems with his role as Chairman, he “had to take many tough decisions with sensitive care to the group’s reputation as well as containing panic amidst internal and external shareholders.” The sum of the matter seems to be that Cyrus Mistry was not given the free hand that he had been promised, mentioning that “once, the trust directors had to leave a Tata Sons board meeting in progress for almost an hour, keeping the rest of the Board waiting, in order to obtain instructions from Mr Tata.”

If the Tatas expected Mistry to go quietly, they were proved very wrong. Mistry went on to appeal his removal to the National Company Law Appellate (NCLAT), which ruled that it was indeed illegal. The high-profile boardroom battle didn’t end there. The Tata Group’s board appealed the NCLAT verdict in the Supreme Court, which ultimately ruled in their favour, after Mistry had been briefly reinstated.

Mistry received grudging admiration even from directors of the Tata Group board. They called him “hard-working” and “more likely to be seen supervising work at a construction site than in a cabin in the office,” according to Livemint.

Mistry is survived by his older brother, Shapoor Mistry, who is an Irish citizen and is married to Behroze Sethna. He also has two sisters – Laila, who is married to London-based portfolio manager Rustom Jehangir and Aloo, the wife of Noel Tata, the half-brother of Ratan Tata. Mistry was married to Rohiqa Chagla, daughter of prominent lawyer Iqbal Chagla and the granddaughter of the jurist MC Chagla. The couple has two sons.

The Mistry family’s real estate assets reportedly include a White-House style, seaside Mansion in Mumbai, the 200-acre Manjri stud farm in Pune and homes in Surrey, London and Dubai.

The rise of election tourism 

As the mammoth Indian election is underway, election Tourism is at its peak with foreign nationals from all over the globe arriving in India, Varanasi in particular, as it happens to be the most VVIP constituency in the country. “We were so looking forward for this moment. Modi is a charismatic figure and getting to see him before our eyes is a memorable experience for all of us,” Anna tells Global Indian. 

The group, which arrived in Varanasi recently for sightseeing and soak in all things spiritual, plan to be part of more road shows and public meetings by PM Narendra Modi in the days to come. Varanasi is witnessing an electoral frenzy like no other, as Modi filed his nomination yesterday.

Despite the sweltering heat, Anna and her friends  had no issues waiting for PM Narendra Modi to arrive amid chants of “Bharat mata ki Jai” which filled the air across all thoroughfares in the city through which Modi’s cavalcade traveled. 

“We walked a lot as there was restricted movement due to the road show. Yes, it was very hot but every moment was worth it. We now have something more to tell our people back home. Elections in India are so full of energy and enthusiasm,” says Anna, whose group spent their time in the iconic Assi ghat.

Anna and her group were briefed on all aspects of Indian elections before they went around Varanasi to experience the election fever. “Modi’s fan following in Varanasi is something to be experienced. We have never came across such huge following for any leader. No wonder Narendra Modi is a global leader,” says Anna, who also visited the Kashi Vishwanath temple, Sarnath among other places.

The group has more election related events lined up in the days to come. “We are here for another 20 days and want to make the most of this ancient city and the elections as well,” adds the “election tourist.” 

When it comes to the famous Assi ghat, not only did Modi himself pick up the spade and cleaned it soon after his victory in 2014, as part of ‘Clean India’ campaign, he went on to host French president Emmanuel Macron and the then Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on the serene ghat, where the star attraction is the “Ganga aarti” in the evening, which leaves those witnessing it, spellbound. Even the Kashi Vishwanath corridor underwent complete renovation a couple of years ago. These moves by the Prime Minister led to a massive boost in domestic and international tourism. 

On the bandwagon 

Gujarat-based Akshar Travels is one such travel company which has launched election tourism packages for foreign tourists this election season. “We have a six-night, seven-day election tourism package where foreign tourists will get to learn various aspects of Indian elections,” informs Manish Sharma, founder and CMD of Akshar Travels, who is also the Chairman of Tourism Corporation Society of Gujarat. 

Priced at Rs 25,000 per person, the package combines election related activities with sightseeing tours. The package, which includes local transportation, breakfast and poll related activities enables tourists to participate in rallies, roadshows by India’s top politicians, particularly PM Narendra Modi and even provides opportunities to meet and eat with local politicians as well, for those who might be interested.

While the Prime Minister was busy campaigning in other parts of the country so far, the focus is now in parts of Uttar Pradesh, particularly Varanasi, where he will be addressing a series of public meetings, hold roadshows among other outreach programmes. People of will cast their vote on June 1. 

“Several tourists from the US, UK and Europe have already arrived or will be arriving shortly in Varanasi to witness the Modi magic, the thrill and excitement of elections while simultaneously indulging in spiritual activities,” says Manish Sharma. 

Niche tourism

The use of elections as a niche Tourism product was first experimented in Gujarat in 2012 when Narendra Modi was the Chief Minister. It was even tried and tested in 2019 general elections as well during which over 8,000 foreign tourists opted for the election package, which covered the two states of Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra, which sent the most number of MPs (80 and 48 respectively) to the Lok Sabha.

This time around, the number of foreign tourists is expected to go up to 25,000 to 30,000. “This concept was inspired by the poll Tourism concept prevalent in Mexico during 2005. The idea came up for discussion at the prestigious World Travel market in London. Ever since, the concept has had a fair number of takers and has bolstered the resolve of its designers to take it to the next level,” informs Sharma.

The idea took shape from the fact that many random foreigners, who happened to be present during election time, watched with keen interest the rallies and public meetings addressed by politicians. Seizing the opportunity, operators like Sharma wasted no time in cashing in on Modi’s popularity and the high octane 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

From researchers, students to heritage and history lovers, journalists and those who want to experience the sheer excitement of elections, have opted for the election package this time.  

The parliamentary constituency has elected Modi twice in the 2014 and 2019 general elections. Now, the people of Varanasi, the world’s most ancient city, appear all set to pick Modi once again. On June 1, about 19.62 lakh voters in Varanasi will determine the fate of PM Narendra Modi, who is contesting from this seat for the third consecutive time. According to the records available with the tourism department, about 53.8 million tourists visited Varanasi in 2023 of which 13,700 were foreign tourists. 

Building Brand India 

Political analyst Rajalakshmi Joshi says PM Modi's target of winning 400+ seats has generated a lot of buzz worldwide. “There have been numerous rallies, marathons, walks in support of Modi in various cities of the US, UK, Germany, Philippines, UAE, etc with the goal to see Modi as PM for the third consecutive time,” points out Joshi, which she says is an indication of soaring global popularity of the Indian PM. This in turn has  caught the attention of foreigners as well, who want to see him in person if they get a chance.

Addressing tens of thousands of people of Indian origin in Australia, the US, the UAE, Japan and elsewhere, Modi has effectively created a novel tool of foreign policy, she says, adding, “And it’s one that the whole world is talking about.”

Seeing the world in ‘BLCK’ & white through Santanu’s metier

(February 18, 2022) Santanu Hazarika got into engineering thinking it was the same as studying science. He was wrong. Failing in almost all subjects, except engineering drawing, the youngster tried to drop out early on but no one understood him. As an escape, he took to drawing – a childhood passion. He also self-taught himself philosophy and metaphysics. Winning the world’s first Red Bull World Doodle Art championship, chosen from 32,000, the 29-year-old is readying for his first-ever debut solo show titled BLCK -- an iconic display of black and white pieces that unsettle and challenge audience perceptions in Mumbai. The show will be on till February 28.

Finding solace in a childhood passion 

Growing up in Guwahati, Santanu’s first introduction to art were comic books. Moving past DC, Marvel, he got into more adult art from image and dark horse comics. “I started copying characters and selling my drawings to friends to buy more comic books,” smiles Santanu, who did his schooling at Maria’s Public School, in the Montessori method.

From a green state like Assam, organic patterns were imprinted in the mind of this engineering dropout, and have impacted his art too.

His engineering college years were the most turbulent, he even started taking medication to combat the pressure. “My notebook drawings were my only solace,” Santanu says, despite being a self-confessed science nerd. His artistic journey began during his time of turmoil, as a means to cope.

No looking back 

The multidisciplinary autodidact visual artist soon had an impressive list of clients - Adidas, Reebok, Harper's, Red Bull, Gully Gang, Azadi records, Ritviz, Nucleya and hip-hop artists like Raftaar and Divine. His monochromatic visual vocabulary, rooted in popular culture, took the world by storm.

The artwork which won him the Red Bull World Doodle Championship in 2014 was an ink-on-paperwork inspired from the teachings of Lord Vishnu. An illustration depicting the atman as the creator who embodied the universe within. The first plane was of logic and science through which it tried to understand nature and existence, the second was of nature and the final one was the crown chakra with Vishnu’s six-headed snake,  adi ananta sesh surrounding it.

“The snake represented the dimension of time -- one, infinite and void -- while nature represented the plane of physical reality. The illustration had a lot of symbolic elements, like the owl for wisdom,” explains Santanu, whose father, Ramen Hazarika, is a businessman.

He has shown his unique art across the world, held workshops in the heart of Siberia. Today, this self-taught independent artist has embellished his metier.

“There is always a battle inside my head - a struggle between the explosive, primal self and the calmer, contained self to meticulously follow a realistic order. It’s like a tug-of-war between abstraction and realism fuelled by heavy metal music,” says the now Mumbai-based visual artist, who is one of the pioneers of the NFT revolution in India. The NFT boom has given digital artists a shot in the arm, with more viability. His collaborative NFT (non fungible token) with Ritviz, became one of the fastest NFTs ever sold, in a record time 37 seconds. He designs and illustrates for showroom murals, cricket team buses, shoes, cars and music album covers too.

Monochrome and turbulence: BLCK 

BLCK is an extension of his turbulent existence and the contentment it brings to him. Drawing heavily on his love for the monochromatic, BLCK, he explains, “absorbs popular culture into intertwined vines of hands, skulls, human bodies and images that mirror our minds, the chaos that descends into our bodies from the images that we consume.” It is an invitation into his world of comfortable turbulence.

A vicarious observer, resonating in the dissonance of humanity and creation, he adds, “I learn, I forget - a humorous paradox. My subjects can range from fictional characters, situations to experiences and subjects from life.”

Working on a few NFT projects, and a highly-anticipated collaboration with the acclaimed fashion brand Dust of Gods, is keeping him inspired.

“I don't wait for inspiration. It has always been a disciplined routine of labour that gets me going. That is my true inspiration,” says the artist who leans towards mockumentaries, anime, manga, physics, philosophy, films and music. Superjail, Dorohedoro, Hellsing, Ghost in the Shell and Apple Seed are his favourites in anime.

Giving back 

Assam is close to Santanu’s heart, and so is the people’s harmonious co-existence with nature and simple living. “Hunting fireflies was a favourite pastime growing up,” recalls Santanu, who believes in giving back to the artist community in Assam. Along with a few friends, he formed a collective Gauhati Art Project to build a design dialogue in the north-east, and connect it with the rest of the world. Since inception (2017), they have conducted workshops, events to help build a community.

Where does the future lie? 

The future, he feels, is about blurring the line between the physical, digital and artistically building a metascape that represents humanity and civilisation. “You can call it the meta verse,” says the visual artist, who is currently reading a manga series Berserk by the late Kentaro Miura. Calling Bhupen Hazarika his favourite Global Indian, he feels the legend’s true genius, endless humility and being the first Assamese to represent their culture is what overawes him - Hazarika’s prolific artistry.

Actor Shruti Haasan is dating Santanu. Both have often been spotted walking hand-in-hand on the streets of Mumbai. In fact, Shruti recently revealed that she was the first to propose to her artist boyfriend.

Dreaming big for the planet

Born in 1977 to professor parents, Gautam was drawn to the idea of the American dream as a young lad. However, before the fructification of his dream, he found his calling in architecture and enrolled at the University of Pune (architecture and planning) to learn the tricks of the trade. But things took a turn when the social entrepreneur stumbled upon sustainable living during a short internship at Auroville. “I attribute much of what I am doing now to that experience. For the first time, I came across a new system of existence,” recalls Gautam. Calling it a “eureka” moment, he was fascinated by the concept of co-creating a common green philosophy that was sustainable.

Thinking sustainability

His first tryst with sustainability left him contemplating, but he dropped the idea after realising it wasn’t the modus operandi for Indians in the 90s. Instead, he turned his energy to his American dream. He enrolled at Memphis College of Art (communication design). He then discovered a passion for film and video, and in 2005, he joined University at Buffalo in media studies. “Those years were very liberating and enterprising. However, I often found myself asking, ‘What’s my purpose in life?’ I wasn’t satisfied with where I was,” adds the social entrepreneur.

While a sense of purpose kept gnawing at him, he worked as an interface designer, and creative director in New York for several years before returning to India in 2010. “The American dream was old and passe, and NRIs were returning to India,” explains the social entrepreneur who started Suitcase 27, and later joined Jabong where he stumbled upon sustainability reports which helped him identify the huge gap in the market. “I started researching millennials’ buying habits and the green audience. It took me back to my NYC days where accessories were an extension of a personal style. A Swiss brand, Freitag, caught my eye,” recalls the social entrepreneur whose interest in upcycling grew after seeing Freitag reuse tarpaulin waste for bags.

"The strong need for a company that worked on the same ethos but in an Indian context,” was what he set out to do. Jaggery Bags was born in 2015 after quitting Jabong. “My family was shocked with my decision. It took me three to six months to convince them,” says Gautam, who co-founded the company with his wife Bhawna Dandona, whom he met in Pune during college. They married in 2004. His mother Usha Malik is a former professor at Delhi University.

Researching the dream

The social entrepreneur’s recce across Delhi led him to Mayapuri where he found old sturdy seat belts. “If a car seat belt can hold the weight of a person, it is a strong raw material for a bag. Also, it wasn’t a material explored before,” says Gautam. The first batch of Jaggery Bags was circulated among friends and family. Garnering interest, and a market for eco-friendly bags, Gautam pushed the pedal on production.

The early days were “tough,” and it took them two to three years to find a footing in India. “It was after my TedTalk in 2019 that the floodgates opened, and we garnered international interest,” says Gautam, who also added cargo belts in 2018. Currently, Jaggery Bags works with canvas tents, parachutes, automobile seat belts, and inflatable castles. They make pouches, laptop bags, satchel bags and bagpacks which are priced between Rs 1500 and Rs 8000. “Raw materials are sorted, washed, and sun-dried before turning them into products,” adds Gautam.

On its quirky name, he adds, “Like jaggery is a healthy substitute for sugar, we want to provide a healthy substitute for bags. A brand that’s synonymous with organic, healthy, and environment friendly.” The sustainable startup has now spread its wings in Italy, Japan, Switzerland and France with exporting. “We soon realised that the startup had the masala for a global entity, and the grit to create jobs for the marginalised,” says the social entrepreneur.

The future is sustainable, thanks to Malik’s idea. “We are scaling up with a focus on marketing and social media as a business. As a social entrepreneur, I want to collaborate with like-minded people,” adds Gautam, a film and music aficionado. When not thinking ecologically, his two daughters are his go-to - reading Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls or just absorbing their positivity. “I want them grow up with a sense of freedom and stand up for themselves,” Gautam concludes.

A video camera that inspired him to make films

Born in Pondicherry to Tamil and Malayalee doctor parents, he was raised in the US after relocating to Pennsylvania, Philadephia with his parents when he waws only six weeks old. The only Hindu in a Roman Catholic school, he felt like an outsider. He never made it to the good books of his teachers because he wasn’t baptized. Moreover, he was once pulled up in class for getting good marks in religion as his teacher was upset that he got grades when he wasn’t even a Catholic.

Such instances made him curious about religious and spiritual beliefs, and soon he gave himself the middle name Night after getting inspired by Native Indians and their culture. During the same time, he was gifted a Super-8 camera, but little did he know this piece of technology would shift the course of his life. In no time, he became the producer of grainy amateur home movies that he shot in his neighborhood. Though he became popular for his thrillers in adulthood, he actually wanted to be the next Steven Spielberg.

The lukewarm beginning

At 17, he enrolled in a film course at New York University, much against the wishes of his doctor parents. “Medicine was in my genetic makeup… as an Asian child, it comes as naturally as driving a car. You get good grades and you plan for a profession in medicine, without even thinking. It was always my backup plan because there was deep concern about my future,” he said in an interview.

At 21, he wrote and directed his first film, Praying with Anger. A low-budget film about an American of Indian descent who goes to India, which tanked. But he got his second chance with the 1998 film Wide Awake. “I couldn’t tell what kind of movie I was making at the time; I was having a tough time figuring out was I making an art movie, a commercial movie? I made that movie, and no one went to see it either. And I was like, two strikes, you are out,” he added.

Two failed attempts at doing something he loved made Shyamalan look deeper and do some introspection. “I sat down and said, I am putting in enough love, enough effort, so what am I doing wrong? I looked up at my wall and I had all these [posters of] movies on my wall, The Exorcist, Raiders of the Lost Ark, famous movies I grew up loving, so I looked at them and I said to myself, let me stop pretending I’m an art filmmaker, stop pretending to be something I am not, and let me make one of these movies,” he added.

The big breakthrough

That’s when he decided to write The Sixth Sense. With no expectation, he began working on the film. During the 90s, the horror and supernatural genre didn’t get much traction and the films soon went to video. But The Sixth Sense opened to packed houses, and the thriller announced the arrival of M Night Shyamalan in Hollywood. An unconventional thriller about a boy with the ability to see dead people, The Sixth Sense turned a page in the supernatural genre with six Academy Award nominations.

The success of The Sixth Sense brought Shyamalan to the office of Warner Bros. who offered him to direct a Superman or Batman film. However, Shyamalan politely refused the offer. Interestingly, it was during his meeting with Warner Bros. that he conceived the plot of his 2001 film Unbreakable. It was his drama take on the comic book genre. Though the film received a lukewarm response, it definitely made Shyamalan a Hollywood player.

Biggies like Steven Spielberg and George Lucas approached the filmmaker for writing a sequel to Raiders of Lost Ark. But the opportunity left Shyamalan so overwhelmed that he declined it in fear of not doing justice to the sequel.

But he was ready to scare the daylights out of his audience with Signs. Yet another supernatural, this time Shyamalan had another trick up his sleeve – aliens. The film set the cash registers ringing and turned out to be one of the best films from the director’s repertoire.

By this time, Shyamalan has become quite an authority on supernatural thrillers in Hollywood. However, his 2004 film The Village received a cold reception at the box office.

The fall and rise

A spate of failures followed — moves such as Lady in the Water, The Happening, The Last Airbender and After Earth were disasters. “I felt like was I starting to lose my voice a bit,” he says. “I’m not really the best person to work in the system,” he told in an interview.

He had to make changes to the way he thinks and operates. “The basic premise was dividing your life into two columns: the things you have control over and the things you don’t. And not getting confused about the two,” Shyamalan said.

For this next project – The Visit – Shyamalan had to take out a $5 million loan against his estate and self-fund. He flew to Los Angeles and showed a rough cut to every Hollywood studio. They all passed and he was devastated. He took a new cut to Universal, and horror doyen Jason Blum signed on as a producer. The film ended up making $98 million. His next movie Split made $280 million. Shyamalan was back.

Trap

Returning to the big screen with his 16th film as a director, Trap unfolds the gripping tale of a father and daughter who attend a pop star’s concert, only to find themselves ensnared in a police sting to capture the notorious serial killer known as The Butcher. They soon realise that the entire event is a carefully orchestrated trap. “I want the industry to move towards more original storytelling. I think audiences would really like it. Look, I know there’s safety in IP. But it’s really important that we come to the movies and see something we’ve never seen before. I’ll keep fighting for that,” said Shyamalan, whose film is set to hit the screens in August 2024.

M Night Shyamalan is one of those rare American-Indian directors who has made Hollywood their home like no one else. At a time when horror genre was relegated to video cassettes, Shyamalan’s The Sixth Sense became the second-highest-grossing film of 1999. The Academy Award-nominated director’s supernatural dramas had an edge and unconventional theme that many directors of those times were missing. Like every achiever, Shyamalan too had to see humbling days when his films flopped after a heady start to his career. While she was fascinated by ingredients like sea buckthorn, I was equally blown away by the sheer diversity of what's grown in India. From discovering black rice and various types of turmeric to appreciating the quality of something as simple as an apple or coriander, it was eye-opening to see the incredible range and quality of ingredients available across the country. Recalling the earliest influences that changed the course of her career's trajectory, Shriya tells Global Indian, "While studying international relations at the University of South California Dornsife, I came across many farmer markets on campus. That's probably when the idea first took root. Upon my return to Mumbai, I noticed that supermarkets were stocked with imported ingredients, and people did not have access to the incredible products grown right here in India. Travelling with my sister inspired me to start a business that made high-quality, organically-grown Indian ingredients available to those seeking a healthier lifestyle."

How did she come up with the name Zama? "I wanted a name that drew inspiration from India, but I was also set on it starting with the first or last letter of the alphabet (for no particular reason)—it was just something that stuck with me. After some research, I found the Sanskrit word 'Sama,' which means tranquillity. I changed the 'S' to 'Z,' and 'Zama' felt like the perfect fit, capturing both the essence of India and my vision for the brand — a celebration of our country's cultural and food diversity,” says Shriya.

Shifting Paradigms in Healthy Lifestyles

Shriya Wadhwa is a passionate believer in the paradigm that a healthy lifestyle leads to multiple benefits. She officially launched Zama Organics in the second half of 2018 after conducting extensive research. "Initially, the products were only supplied to family and friends and restaurants like Masque. It was done via WhatsApp but I later put a supply chain process in place." She prefers supply via road and rail as Shriya is firm about not adding to the carbon footprint by using airlines to deliver to Zama’s warehouse. Besides, it would increase the prices which would be counter-productive.

The product range at Zama Organics is fairly vast. Millets are sourced from Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra; black rice from Manipur; saffron from the Pulwama district in Kashmir (which is a bestseller); extra virgin olive oil from Rajasthan; and Lakadong turmeric from Meghalaya. Spices, cold-pressed oils, ghee, whole grains, pulses, flours, rice varieties, nuts, nut butters, and preserves form the rest of the groceries on the list. These are available pan-India through the website, and she also supplies to the US and South Korea, with plans to further expand her export footprint.

The fresh fruit, vegetables and herbs are available only for Mumbai and Pune residents as they are grown locally. "We work with over 50,000 farmers from all over India. My team makes visits too. Some of the ones I did were so remote that for hours on end, my car would be the only one on the road. This exploration is not just about sourcing—it's about discovering India and celebrating our culture through food, which is the only way I know how. Regarding the organic element, while all the farms we work with follow organic and traditional practices, certifications can be extremely costly. While many of our products are certified, it is not a mandatory requirement, as we believe in inclusive sourcing and aim to support all farmers," she says, adding, "At Zama, every batch undergoes stringent checks, including spot testing for adulteration and pesticide residues, as well as farm visits and taste tests. Many of the farms we source from are so remote they don’t even have access, and others have been growing organically for generations. We take great pride in supporting these traditional, clean farming methods that protect both the environment and the integrity of our ingredients."

Shriya Wadhwa believes her products are the valuable aids one needs to have a healthy lifestyle. "Food and what you consume take a long time to show results. It is when you create a consistent change that you can see the benefits. A diet is not a lifestyle. Several people make that switch when they have kids. I want even the younger generation to have a healthy way of living and not wait till they become parents. I want them to cook from scratch with wholesome ingredients."

Expanding Horizons

Whether it's flours or dals, Shriya advises all her customers to store them in airtight containers as soon as they open them, as they are freshly packed and, due to their natural and organic nature, more susceptible to moisture and spoilage. Shriya has also ventured into creating preservative-free products recently. Zama has varieties of ketchup as part of the range — from regular to Jain and a newly launched hot-and-sweet. "We shared the ketchup with families, and it was a hit with kids. It's a healthier alternative, but let's face it—no matter how nutritious a product is, if it's not delicious, no one will eat it."

She now plans to come up with edible rose water that can be used to make sherbets, desserts, and rose lassi at home. As for expanding markets, she says, "I plan to explore the UK and Dubai markets and selling in larger quantities as part of phase two of our expansion." Adding more products to the inventory is also on the anvil.

One might believe that organic products are everywhere now, but the passion and dedication with which Shriya works at sourcing genuine ingredients, some little-known ones as well, but all of them uniformly healthy, is what sets her apart. Through Zama, she is not only offering better-for-you ingredients but is also celebrating India's rich agricultural heritage. Her initiative is more than just a business; it's a love letter to India, written through its diverse, high-quality products—an endeavour especially worthy of support for those who believe in healthy, sustainable lifestyles.
