Celebrating Amrita Sher-Gil on her 110th birth anniversary

(February 6, 2023) As the viewer approaches The Bride’s Toilet, one of the best-known works by artist Amrita Sher-Gil, they are immediately struck by the intimacy of the scene. A young bride, resplendent in her wedding finery, sits before a mirror, surrounded by the trappings of her toilette. Her eyes are downcast, her expression thoughtful. In that moment, the viewer is transported to a private world, where the bride can reflect on the joys and challenges of her future as a married woman. As Sher-gil remarked, in a letter to a friend, “I want to paint the joy and sadness, the laughter and tears of people, to show the different aspects of life, and above all to be true to life.

“Sher-Gil’s paintings are marked by a powerful sense of empathy, as well as a keen eye for capturing the social and political realities of India in the early 20th century,” wrote Yashodhara Dalmia, Indian art historian and author of “Amrita Sher-Gil: The Passionate Life and Art of India’s Greatest Modernist”. Her bold approach to her craft and refusal to conform to traditional norms have earned her the nickname “India’s Frida Kahlo”. Global Indian takes a look at the iconic artist Amrita Sher-gil, who would have turned 110 on January 30, delved into themes of gender, class and sexuality, making her a true feminist icon who was far ahead of her time.

Early life

Amrita Sher-Gil was born in 1913, in Budapest, Hungary, to a Punjabi Sikh father and a Hungarian-Jewish mother. Her parents were both accomplished individuals in their own right – father, Umrao Singh Sher-Gil, was a scholar and her mother, Marie Antoinette Gottesmann, was an trained opera singer. From a young age, Sher-Gil showed a talent for the arts, and began painting at the age of just five years old. In 1926, during a visit to Shimla, her uncle, the Indologist Ervin Baktay, visited Shimla and noticed the young girl’s artistic talent. She would paint the servants in her house, and get them to model for her, capturing their dignified and expressive faces in her drawings.

Art historian Yashodhara Dalmia writes, in her biography, Amrita Sher-Gil: A Life, “From the very start, her interest was in capturing people and the social milieu they inhabited.” Amrita’s early paintings were marked by a naturalistic style, a deep empathy for her subjects, and a remarkable sensitivity to their emotions.

Sher-Gil in Paris

In 1929, she enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and discovered the European modernist masters like Paul Cézanne, Pablo Picasso, and Henri Matisse. It was here that she realized the immense potential of art to challenge and shape cultural norms. In a letter to her friend, she wrote, “I want to paint not just aesthetically but also socially. I want to do something for my country and its people.”

While in Paris, Amrita Sher-Gil continued to evolve as an artist. She painted several portraits of Parisians, capturing their refined elegance and bohemian spirit. She also painted landscapes, still life, and nudes, which showed her mastery of the human form and her deep understanding of light and color. An anecdote from Sher-Gil’s time in Paris illustrates her determination and commitment to her artistic vision. During a critique session at the École, her professor criticized her painting, stating that the figures in her work were not proportionate.

Sher-Gil’s response was simple but powerful: “I don’t paint people to please the academic eye, but to give voice to the emotions that stir within me.” She was also dissatisfied with the restraints of her upper-crust life, she ventured, as was fashionable at the time, into underbelly of Paris’ party circuit, into the small, often seedy cafes frequented by artists and bohemian intellectuals. “She was also very free in her relationships with men and there is more than one reference of her having been with women, too,” Dalmia told me in an interview. “She would stay out late and had a number of admirers.”

The return home

Amrita Sher-Gil returned to India in December of 1934, after studying in Paris for several years. Here, she found herself in the midst of a thriving art scene, where artists were exploring new techniques and styles, drawing inspiration from traditional Indian art forms as well as European modernism. One of the leading voices of the time was art historian and critic, B.N. Goswamy, who once said, “Amrita’s return to India marked the arrival of a new voice in Indian painting, one that would challenge prevailing norms and bring fresh perspectives to the table.”

In 1937, touring South India, she was greatly moved by the local women and depicted, in the bold colours inspired by the paintings in the Ajanta Caves, their pathos and their poverty. “I can only paint in India. Europe belongs to Picasso, Matisse, Brazque… India belongs only to me,” she wrote, in a letter to a friend. Her work went on to inspire, some years later, Rabindranath Tagore, Abanindranath Tagore and Jamini Roy, founders of the Bengal School of Art and also the Progressive Artist’s Group with artists like FN Souza, M.F. Husain and S.H. Raza. One of her most famous works from this time, Hill Women, is a testament to Amrita’s dedication to capturing the essence of Indian life. In this painting, she masterfully portrays the rugged beauty of rural women, working in the fields amidst a stunning backdrop of hills.

An unparalleled legacy

In 1934, Amrita held her first solo show in Bombay, which was a critical success. Her paintings, inspired by her travels and the people she met, such as Hill Women and South Indian Villagers Going to Market, brought a new perspective to the Indian art world, capturing the beauty and struggles of everyday life. “I believe that an artist has a social obligation and must use his art as a means of helping the suffering humanity, Amrita Sher-Gil wrote, again to Marie Louise Chassany.

She also produced The Bride’s Toilet, The Three Girls, and Young Girls, which became her most famous works. In an anecdote, historian R. Siva Kumar tells of how Amrita, who was always in search of new inspiration, would often travel to remote villages in India, seeking out new subjects to paint.

Sher-Gil died at 28, shrouded in mystery, days before the opening of her first major show in Lahore and Khushwant Singh writes of being among only a “handful of mourners” present at her cremation. Still, her work went on to influence modern Indian masters and the Indian government declared her paintings, most of which are housed at the National Gallery of Modern Art in Delhi, as national treasures.

Everything is cooked in ghee. They revel in their Indian-ness, so much so their company is called Unapologetic Foods, while their servers wear t-shirts with 'Unapologetic Indian' written across them. Regional flavours to the fore

You're also not likely to find the sort of 'gourmet' Indian fare that's usually served up at desi restaurants in New York City. Pandya and Mazumdar refuse to serve their Indian food with "truffle, wasabi or parmesan to make it gourmet. We were ashamed to make real Indian food," Pandya remarked. "This recognition will empower a lot of chefs to believe that simple Indian food can be successful and it can bring you recognition and accolades.' 

At Dhamaka, you can ease your way in to the menu with vada pav, or "spiced potatoes in a bun with turmeric and chutney," or the fried pomfret. If you're feeling more adventurous, you could branch out into the Meghalayan boiled pig's head salad. All their food is served in the same vessel in which it is cooked, a bluntness of style that has drawn praise and criticism and in both cases, recognition. 

In 2022, Chef Chintan Pandya was named Best Chef in New York State at the James Beard Foundation Awards, after Dhamaka made it to No. 1 on the NYT New Restaurants list. It was more than he could have imagined. He thought he had peaked when Adda became the first restaurant to make it to the coveted list.

Learning from setbacks

Growing up in India in a vegetarian household, Pandya always knew he wanted to be a chef, because he "genuinely loves to eat," he told Eater. "I always wanted to be a chef so I could eat as much as I wanted and not have to pay money." At home, the Sunday meal was much anticipated, "because that's when mom made dal dhokli," he said, in the interview with Moneycontrol. "So bhelpuri, sevpuri, dosa and Chinese food from the roadside stall were a huge part of my life. Rasraj and Guru Kripa in Vile Parle at Shiv Sagar at Chowpatty were favourite haunts." 

The first time he handled meat, poultry and seafood was at culinary school, which he attended for three years before joining the Oberoi Centre of Learning and Development for his master's degree. That's where he specialised in Indian food, a turn of events that happened almost by chance. Italian cuisine was his first choice but there were no openings at the Oberoi Grand, where he was at the time and he was assigned to the Indian restaurant instead.

These were the early setbacks in Pandya's life and he admits there have been "multiple," which have only "made him stronger." In 2008, he quit hotels and worked as a food and beverage manager for an international airline, which involved lots of desk work and no cooking. His first break came in 2009, when he moved to Singapore to serve as a chef-partner at a fine-dining restaurant, where he remained for four years. In 2013, he came to Cleveland, working with a company there as its culinary director.

Rahi, the trendsetter

It was around this time that he decided to do something on his own and Atlanta seemed the place to be for Indian food. Pandya was wrong, however. He "lost a certain amount of time, money, effort, everything." So he packed his bags once more and arrived in New York City. In 2017, he founded Unapologetic Food with Roni Mazumdar and they opened Rahi, an upscale Indian restaurant in Greenwich Village. Their take was contemporary fusion, with offerings like truffle khichdi and smoked salmon chaat.

Indian and proud

A year down the line, they changed that approach. Adda opened up in Long Island in 2018 and Dhamaka came to the Lower East Side in February 2021. They did away with the tikka masala and salmon and truffles, bringing regional flavours boldly to the fore. While Adda dished up a Lucknow-style goat neck biryani, Dhamaka brought more exotic offerings to the table, like the Meghalayan doh kleh. In 2022, one year after its opening, Dhamaka fetched Pandya the James Beard Award for best chef. 

Now, the duo wants to step out of the diverse and cosmopolitan hub that is New York City, to test themselves in tougher environments. "Until we really reach the heart of the country," Mazumdar told the New York Times, "I don't think we can really move Indian cuisine forward." There are perceptions to battle - "Americans expect to pay less for tandoori paneer than they would a burrata salad, and to dictate the level of spiciness," Pandya said, in the same article. "We are stopping this idea of catering to every other person but the Indian palate."

“The exposure I have received since immigrating to the US is invaluable. It made me more confident, fearless, and challenged me to constantly step out of my comfort zone. Most recently, I went on a country-wide book tour for my second book, Unshackled, where I visited four states and eight cities in 21 days. For someone who was terrified of speaking on stage, this tour pushed me to limits I could have only imagined and made me better. While there is a lot to be said about the downfalls of America -- including its outdated immigration system, excessive consumerism, expensive healthcare, and more -- I am grateful to this country for the exposure it gave me,” she tells Global Indian.

Rewind

Growing up in Pattaravakkam, a suburb about 15 km northwest of Chennai where Balasubramani spent her formative years, her childhood was about all things quiet and quaint. A topper at school and at NIT Trichy, she followed up her early achievements with a course at Columbia University for grad school. “Moving to America changed my life,” she smiles.

Her first taste of the US came even before grad school, when she spent a summer interning at UW Madison at the age of 16 after her sophomore year of high school. That was a window into what life in America could look like -- and she absolutely loved it. “So, I came back in 2017 to begin my master’s in management sciences at Columbia University,” she says.

The ‘Write’ Way

When Balasubramani was just 16 she started her blog Curious Maverick and even at that age she always knew that if she ever started something of her own someday, that would be the name of her venture. Circa 2023 and she finally started The Curious Maverick LLC when she decided to venture into writing and entrepreneurship full-time.

She quit her job in late 2021 and spent most of 2022 exploring and researching. “By the end of the year, it was clear to me that my next calling is to write a book for high-skilled immigrants in America, and hopefully create a small and positive dent in that domain. I set up the company as soon as I landed in India and spent most of 2023 publishing the book and building the online Unshackled community for talent visa aspirants,” she says.

Her new book Unshackled is your answer to the question, ‘What would a book on legal immigration in America look like if it was friendly, engaging, and human?’ While immigration would rank as one of the more boring and complex topics one could think about, Balasubramani knew she could make it more fun if she approached it from a storytelling aspect. “Whether we like it or not, we must go through immigration to live and work in America. Sadly, most international students and immigrant workers are not well-educated on this topic and are unaware of many creative and legal options out there, including the O-1A and EB-2 NIW visas.”

Balasubramani and her co-author, Sameer Khedekar wrote Unshackled to demystify a complex system and give people a ‘map of the territory’ when it came to high-skilled immigration. The book is filled with gripping stories, beautiful visuals, and actionable guidance. “This is the book I wish I'd read when I moved here,” says Balasubramani. And the validation came from a reader who told her, ‘Honestly, I wish this book was given to me along with my visa stamp at the U.S. consulate.’ As immigration changed her life for the better, she wrote her first book ‘Admitted’ with the hope to not just promote talent mobility, but also educate students on the journey they were about to embark on so they take better decisions while applying to universities in a foreign country. She self-published the book and has sold 3000-4000+ copies in the past few years.

Valuable Lessons

Quiz her on some lessons that she has learnt till date, she says that it is important to take more risks early on when you don't have a dependent or family. “Too many people in their mid-20s miss that precious window when they can take risks without impacting too many people. They then look back 10 years later and wish they'd been more courageous early on. Invest in long-term relationships, especially with people who make you better. I only began doing this in the past three years and now I cannot imagine life without my support system. Focus on making money without it becoming your primary focus,” she says. And by building a tight-knit support system she has overcome many challenges as well. And over the last four years her life has changed because of the presence of people.

In 2020, during the pandemic, life felt "empty and lonely," Balasubramani recalls. She was living in a small room in San Francisco with roommates she barely knew. "My relationship with my parents was stale at best. I didn't have friends in the city, and there was no one who I could consistently turn to for support. It was a lonely year." The turning point in this journey happened when she met someone named Rajesh Setty in 2021. He quickly became a third parent, a best friend, and her teacher. "He showed me what one's life could look like if it was lived with compassion, joy, and generosity. Thanks to him, my relationship improved with everyone around me, and now I can say with certainty that I have people who care about me in my life (and a wonderful family back in India),” she admits.

Looking Ahead

Driven by the fact that she can take something that is deeply personal to her and try to create something out of that struggle/experience to make others' lives better, Balasubramani has her aim clear and bright. Right now, her focus is on using her free time to meet people and build more connections in her life. She is planning to begin work on her third book later this year. “It is unlike anything I've written before as it is a novel based on a true story. I plan to reveal more about it in the coming months. Overall, I want to publish many more books, create communities, and hopefully spend the later part of my life focusing on philanthropy,” she says.

Amidst the lush foliage, rolling hills and grasslands of Bandhavgarh National Park, Solo found her habitat where she first met Suyash eight years ago. A capture of the six-month-old earned Suyash the Nature’s Best Photography Asia Award, which incidentally hung at Smithsonian Natural History Museum in Washington DC for a year. Solo played a huge part in Suyash’s journey into wildlife filmmaking as his debut five-part series managed to impress the World Wildlife Fund, which eventually became its distributor. "My first series was inspired by my early life in Central India, its people and animals. For the past three years, this champion of wildlife conservation has been navigating through unexplored territory of the park to capture the raw and unfiltered beauty of nature.

A childhood in the lap of nature

He grew up in Central India where his IAS officer dad was posted. Thus for the Madhya Pradesh-born, his love for wildlife began early. On his first visit to a zoo as a four-year-old, he learnt (from his maternal grandfather) that animals aren’t free like those he saw on wildlife shows. Instead, they are caged for life. "It broke my heart, and set me on a path to learn more about our wild animals and observe them in their habitat," he recalls.

Instead of guffawing to Tom & Jerry as a five-year-old, Suyash would spend hours watching wildlife shows. Often, he would sprawl languidly in his backyard, spotting birds, climbing guava trees, or observing fish by a pond. "I always wanted to do something related to wildlife, film and photography, and document these sightings. Growing up, people from across the world would present on Indian wildlife. I wondered why an Indian could not do the same," muses the environmentalist whose supportive family cheered him on.

Switching gears to political advocacy

Inspired by mavericks like Steve Irwin, Steve Backshall, and Nigel Marven, Keshari was ready to become a wildlife presenter like his childhood heroes. Yet, his enthusiasm was met with dissent by field experts in India. At age 17, a career in wildlife was considered a suicide mission with no guaranteed results or hefty paycheck. "They told me that it would take me at least 10 to 15 years to create a name. When this came from the people who I looked up to, I accepted it as the only truth. I gave up on my dream and moved to the US," recalls Keshari.

In America, he switched gears to political advocacy - a degree from Wake Forest University, and then a cushy job at Washington DC. Yet, something was amiss. He yearned for the woods, wildlife and nature. "My deep-seated love for wildlife, and the quest to fulfill my childhood dream led me in 2019 to quit my job and become a full-time wildlife presenter. It also brought me back to my homeland, India. There was no other place I could think of but my beloved, Bandhavgarh National Park (to start my journey as a wildlife presenter) - it had shaped my life and made me the person I am today," beams the 25-year-old with pride.

Finding his true calling

For a child who picked up his dad's camera to record wild stories, he was a natural. A self-taught photographer, his urge to tell stories was prime. "For me, it was always about capturing nature’s beauty and explaining the importance of conservation. Moreover, I would tell stories of the human-wildlife conflict, and make people aware of the beautiful natural heritage that our planet offers. I knew that in order to stand out, I had to be myself," reveals Suyash, whose Instagram account has over 46k followers.

Suyash went viral on the OTT scene in 2019 with Safari with Suyash. Entirely self-funded, the series was picked up by WWF International for a web release, and it opened the doors to wildlife film making. "The idea was to create something people could emotionally connect with. It is vital for people to feel attached to wildlife, only then will they care," says the wildlife presenter.

Happy to put the spotlight on wildlife conservation, forest community upliftment, and virtual safaris, his aim was to show something completely raw, authentic and unfiltered. Today, the Bandhavgarh National Park is his playground, and the wild animals, his muse.

With the help of a few friends, Suyash recently provided electricity through solar lamps to 175 anti-poaching camps at the national park that he funded from his virtual safaris. "More than 250 forest staff received shoes, raincoats, and bags. Another 200 staff received solar torches to help with night patrol and phone charging. It's vital to take care of the people who take care of our natural heritage," reveals the conservationist who was a former associate at Legislative Affairs and State Engagement at US-India Strategic Partnership Forum.

India’s first OTT wildlife platform

Since virtual safaris had never been done in India before, Suyash Keshari has carved a niche by creating India’s first virtual safari experience which comes at a cost of ₹5000. "Buy a membership, jump into the back of the jeep from the comfort of your home and indulge in a wild, raw and epic adventure," coaxes the presenter who loves chasing sunsets.

Suyash Keshari along with his small team often brave Madhya Pradesh’s scorching sun and torrential rain to capture footage that resonates. "The biggest challenge isn’t the endless wait in adverse conditions or tracking an animal. It is the willingness of the mind and heart to work harder to achieve the goals, but the body is just too tired to keep going. The challenge is to overcome the setbacks and keep going no matter what," says Suyash who wants to expand virtual tours on Safari with Suyash.

"The idea, for now, is to expand the ‘Safari with Suyash- TV’ platform as much as possible along with our conservation merchandise line. The focus would lie on connecting people with nature, whether virtually or physically with safaris and tours. For me, there’s still a long way to go and a lot more to do and connecting more and more people to nature and wildlife on the way," signs off Keshari.

(June 21, 2024) Brushing shoulders with some of the biggest names in the world of cinema at the French Riviera last month, Mysuru-based filmmaker Chidananda S Naik found himself in a state of deep gratitude and awe at the 77th Cannes Film Festival where his short film, Sunflowers Were the First Ones to Know won him the La Cinef Award. "My heart is filled with gratitude. This win is not just mine; it belongs to everyone who was a part of this project and every Indian who backed us, especially from Karnataka, as we proudly represented India on this global stage," he tells Global Indian. Making India proud

Growing up, Chidananda had never imagined himself on a stage as big as the Cannes Film Festival, making his debut feel surreal and an experience he calls incredible. "It was such a huge honour to represent India." As a member of the contingent that made India proud at Cannes 2024, the filmmaker is thrilled to have witnessed the historic triumphs of Indians at the film festival, a period he calls his "most memorable moment." "I saw history being written in front of me and what a year for India! It started with Mansi Maheshwari, her anime film Bunnyhood won third prize at La Cinef, followed by Anasuya Sengupta, who became the first Indian to win the Un Certain Regard Best Actress award, and then Payal Kapadia, whose film All We Imagine won Palme d'Or," he smiles.

For an emerging talent like him, film festivals play a crucial role, offering a platform to showcase their talent to a global audience and industry professionals. "La Cinef, formerly known as Cinefondation Selection, are particularly important because they are specifically created mainly to inspire and support the next generation of international filmmakers," says Chidananda, whose short Kannada film was among the 18 entries selected from film school students worldwide.

Bringing a popular folklore to the forefront

Taking a leaf out of a popular Kannada folklore Ajjiya Jamba, the 16-minute short film tells the story of a village plunged into darkness by an elderly woman who steals a rooster. This act triggers chaos as the villagers frantically search for the missing rooster, believing it is essential to restore daylight. To bring the rooster back, a prophecy is invoked, resulting in the exile of the old woman's family.

Chidananda cherished the folklore since childhood, but during his time at FTII, he discovered that it was only well-known in Karnataka and remained a mystery to people outside the state. "My editor, Manoj V, and I have always wanted to make a Kannada film, and the possibility of bringing the story world we imagined to life was really fascinating to us," adds the filmmaker, who had only four days to shoot the film that was a part of his coursework at FTII. However, he remained focussed on taking the best shots and reflects that the filming process taught him to be "meditative in the chaos."

Shot entirely under the cloak of night, the film uses darkness to weave a tale of mystery and suspense, pulling the viewers in the villagers' desperate struggle, thus making night itself a vital character. "It was extremely difficult to shoot with all the limited resources and rules. We were super exhausted but really satisfied with the shots we achieved," says the filmmaker, who found his crew in his batchmates. "Suraj served as the Director of Photography, Manoj was the editor, and Abhishek handled location sound and mixing," reveals Chidananda, noting that other artists joined them to assist during the filming.

Doctor-turned-filmmaker

It's hard to believe that the award-winning filmmaker once aspired to be a doctor. Born in Shivamogga to Prof Shekar Naik, Head of Department of Food Sciences and Nutrition at Yuvaraja College and Vinoda Bai, Chidananda was "never interested in cinema nor thought about it much." His passion initially lay in medicine, leading him to enroll at Mysore Medical College and Research Institute for his MMBS. Ironically, it was medicine that initially drew him towards art. "From the first year, we delved into anatomy through dissection, understanding the human body in great detail. Yet, I often pondered about emotions and feelings, which are also essential aspects of being human," says Chidananda, who found his expression in filmmaking, and joined FTII, Pune after completing his MBBS.

"We are all born first and then we decide how to spend the rest of the days before turning into ashes. There is no blueprint to life that dictates what we should do. I just decided to be happy and do things that make me and people around me happy. It's more about coming to terms with myself and finding my expression of life. These thoughts led me to resonate deeply with art and literature, ultimately guiding me towards filmmaking. It wasn't that I was unhappy studying or practicing medicine, nor was I doing it solely for my parents. Instead, it was a realisation that my true passion lay elsewhere," says Chidananda.

The road ahead

Pivoting to filmmaking turned out to the best decision for Chidananda, who met a bunch of talented people at FTII, thus helping him hone his craft and make impactful films. He reserves a special mention for Neeraj Voralia, a mentor whom he deeply admires. "He is a true blessing to students at FTII."

With La Cinef Award under his belt, the passionate filmmaker is now gearing towards making a mainstream film. "I will share updates in a proper way as the project progresses. I can't reveal too much at this stage," says the man who has brought Kannada film to the forefront at a global stage like Cannes with his film Sunflowers Were the First Ones to Know. "We are motivated more than ever to make films that tell compelling stories and connect with audiences worldwide. The journey ahead is exciting, and I believe we will see many more Kannada films gaining global acclaim in the future," he signs off.
