Ananya Birla: The artist and entrepreneur tiptoeing into the family business

(February 3, 2023) Ananya Birla’s appointment as director to the Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail Ltd marks the entry of the fifth generation of the family in the $60 billion conglomerate. However, before diving into the family business, the 28-year-old billionaire heiress wanted to carve her own journey and not rest on the laurels and fame of her family name. And that’s exactly what she did in the last decade – being an artist and an entrepreneur. Being born with a silver spoon can spell comfort and security, but affluence can also cast a shadow on freedom and destiny. And this was something that she was aware of at crucial junctures of her life.

It is her heart that Ananya follows, and this led to her finding her true calling — music and entrepreneurship. For someone passionate about singing and making a difference in the world, Ananya is carving her niche as a youth icon.

A loneliness that led to music

Born to billionaire industrialist Kumar Mangalam Birla and Neerja Birla, Ananya often found herself at the crossroads of living up to her family’s name and carving her own identity. With a bodyguard and a curfew in place, Ananya felt claustrophobic trying to fit into the world’s expectations of her. It was music that came to her rescue in times of loneliness and made her feel understood.

Her parents who were supportive of her dreams often helped ease her dilemma. Even as a child, it was music that gave Birla solace and joy. At age nine, she picked up the santoor, having watched her mother play the instrument over the years. Growing up, she fell in love with the guitar and taught herself to play the instrument through YouTube tutorials. That’s when she started tiptoeing into the world of music composition. However, music continued to be a hobby, until, she moved to Oxford University to study Economics and Management.

The musical journey

It was here that Ananya was introduced to the vibrant music scene and the gig culture that played a catalyst in transforming her passion into a career. She began playing at local pubs and clubs in London, and also started writing her own music. This exposure to several genres of music gave her the confidence to make her own music. And that’s what she did when she dropped her first single Livin the Life in 2016.

The popularity of the song landed her a worldwide release through AM:PM recording after Dutch DJ Afrojack remixed it. This was the beginning of her innings in music.

Ananya arrived on the scene when there were not many takers of the music that she was producing. But the 28-year-old had to break the ceiling to make her voice heard, literally.

In a conversation with Billboard, she said, “When I started out, I was told that there wasn’t really an audience in India for my type of music. Until recently, film music really dominated. Different genres and English-language songs didn’t get much attention. Now labels are pushing independent singers, and there’s a lot more opportunity for artists who want to create their own music. The digital shift and globalisation also mean the appetite for English language music has increased so much,” adding, “I think if you want to stand out from the crowd you have to be willing to take risks and go against the grain. Breaking out was tough and I got a bit of criticism at first which was hard to deal with. But, I learned quickly that this comes with the territory and anything creative is 100% subjective. I am so happy people are now responding so positively to my music back home.”

With 2017 came her next single Meant To Be. Such was the response to her song that made her the first Indian artist with an English single to go platinum in India. In no time, Ananya made a name for herself in the music world and was recognized by international artists. So much so that she soon found herself performing at Coldplay’s concert in Mumbai.

Ananya is one of the few women artists who is making it big in pop music with five of her singles making it to platinum. Be it Hold On (2018) or Unstoppable (2019), Ananya has been carving a niche for herself in the world of music, one song at a time. “As a woman in a male-dominated industry, it’s important to believe in yourself and not to do anything you don’t feel comfortable with. It can be tough. When I started out, it really hurt when I was told that my style, look, or sound wasn’t right. But my vision was strong and I refused to change for anyone. As soon as I was confident being unapologetically myself, everything started falling into place,” she added.

Ananya’s songs are an extension of herself, something that she draws from her personal experiences. For her, music is a medium through which she connects with people and emotions.

The singer and songwriter is one of the few artists to collaborate with big names like Sean Kingston and Mood Melodies, thus giving the world a perfect mix of pop music. Ananya’s songs and collaborations are a reminder that music is a universal language. “International perspective definitely helps take a song to the next level. I’m influenced by all the places I go. I’ve been lucky to work in some of the best cities across the world where music is a huge part of the culture. India, though, is a part of my soul. It is impossible not to be influenced by it, the intensity, the sounds, the centuries of culture,” added the Global Indian.

In just a few years, Ananya has become a name to reckon with in international music circles. If her 2019 song Day Goes By was proof of the first collaboration between an Indian and American artist, her 2020 song Everybody’s Lost put her on an American national top 40 pop radio show, Sirius XM Hits, making her the first Indian artist to achieve that feat.

Ananya’s music is universal, and her performances at some of the biggest music events like Global Citizen, Oktoberfest, and Sunburn are proof of her popularity.

The entrepreneur making a difference

Ananya’s love for music is quite evident, but not many know that she founded her first startup at 17. While her heart is in music, her purpose lies in making a difference and that’s exactly what she did when she started Svatantra Microfin to provide financial aid to women in rural India.

Despite her privileges, Ananya was aware of the existing income gap and wanted a company that could help small businesses grow. But it was a challenge to start a company at 17, even with a powerful surname.

“When I started up, I was young and no one was willing to join my team; banks were not willing to lend. No clients are willing to come in. I used to cry in the bathroom when I came home after work,” she told Makers India in an interview. But she was determined to make it happen and currently, her startup has reached over one million customers across the country.

Ananya expanded her vision and dove into a global luxury e-commerce platform with Ikai Asai in 2016. It was in the same year that Forbes named her one of Asia’s Women to Watch.

The youth icon and entrepreneur is also closely involved with MPower, a mental health foundation she started with her mother Neerja to break taboos around mental health. Her struggles with anxiety as a teenager led to the formation of MPower, and the foundation is working incessantly to create awareness of mental health.

“We have centuries worth of stigma built up around mental health issues – self-perpetuated by the fact that poor mental health is so difficult to talk about. However, the importance of talking about it cannot be overstated. When we talk about mental illness we debunk falsities, tackle isolation and empower those suffering to get the help they so badly need. With global suicide rates on the rise, it is crucial that reaching out for help becomes an act of power as opposed to a sign of weakness,” she told YourStory.

During the pandemic MPower joined hands with the Government of Maharashtra to launch a 24×7 helpline and more than 45,000 calls were received within the first two months of its launch.

Not only this, Ananya launched Ananya Birla Foundation in 2020 to provide COVID-19 relief work that had the distribution of PPE kits and providing essentials to migrant workers at its centre.

At 28, Ananya is the textbook example of a youth icon who is breaking the glass ceiling with her global music one hit single at a time, and making a difference in society with her philanthropic work.

Early days

Bhutani comes from an ‘out-and-out Delhi upbringing’, spending his formative years studying at Modern School in South Delhi till he was 18 years old. “I got by well in school in terms of academics, but the real learning for me was always outside – seeing my parents build their businesses, the interactions I had with my friends, and all that that comes with growing up in Delhi,” he recollects. Having watched his parents work hard to build their own businesses, he understood early on that while it was tough, it was also greatly rewarding. “Quite early on, when I was 15 or 16 years old, I was fascinated by the finance world – the lifestyles of the people working in investment banking, the work they did, and the influence they wielded,” he explains.

Career strategy

Heading abroad to Singapore Management University for his undergraduate degree became a defining experience for Bhutani. The university offered a career-oriented curriculum and Bhutani made the most of it, seeking internships to get real world exposure. He interned at KPMG India as a forensic analyst and then at BNP Paribas India, getting his first feel of office culture. “My most impactful internship was at a boutique investment firm, Asia Green Capital in Singapore, where I learnt from the best in the business,” he tells Global Indian. He learned how to pay attention to detail, draw rough conclusions and act on them and how to conduct himself in meetings. He stayed there for a year and a half before joining a boutique investment bank, North Ridge Partners, where he joined as an analyst in the team and leaving as a director five years later. This was where he established his career as an investment banker, learnt the ropes of tech investment and funding, and built goodwill among a high-value network across Singapore and SE Asia. At the end of his stint with North Ridge, he took the leap into entrepreneurship, setting up his own boutique investment firm, Capital Connect Advisors, along with some ex-colleagues. Cap Connect is now one of the most active boutique investment banks in the technology sector across SE Asia and India.

Venturing ahead

In 2022, he teamed up with longtime associates to create Breathe Capital, a micro-venture capital firm supporting promising entrepreneurs in India. The ventures he's involved with, Cap Connect and Breathe Cap, “are a synthesis of my formative years growing up in Delhi, my time at University and of course my investment banking career in Singapore,” Bhutani says. These are still early days for Breathe Capital, and Bhutani divides his time between building he business and operations, While still early in the journey with Breathe Capital, he dedicates time to various aspects, from evaluating investment pitches and assisting portfolio founders to refining strategies based on market trends, managing investor relations, and dealing with regulators.

Technology is at the epicentre of his business – they they leverage tools like DealCloud for CRM to handle investor, startup, and stakeholder data, Asana for project management and Eillia AI for repetitive tasks like research queries. As a young founder in financial services, he faces unique challenges, given the dominance of older CEOs with decades of experience. Despite grappling with "imposter syndrome," he focuses on delivering outcomes and transparently showcasing the value he brings, fostering trust among the founders he works with. “It has been an uphill battle for me,” he admits, in “trying to establish my own arena and my own track record.” The key is building trust amongst his founders, “really the only people who matter.” This he does by remaining outcome-focused and upfront  in terms of value proposition.

Striking a balance

Quiz him on how he maintains work-life balance, he admits that this is something that is always at odds with each other. “For me work life balance is a false choice. I don’t see how one cannot call work where you spend at least eight hours every day or 50% of your waking hours not life.” Bhutani’s way around this is to find the one thing that does not feel like “work,” which fuels an overarching purpose. “If you are unable to do that still, don’t worry too much about this early on in your career. Rather focus on building something sustainable so that, later, you can spend time as you like.” Personally, he enjoys any time he can get with his family and friends, play a bit of sports, and take short vacations now and then.

Lessons learnt

Having worked for a while, Bhutani says that the single most important insight he has for a young person is always optimise for the upside rather than the downside. “As young people, we are presented with so-called ‘safer options’, which are paths with a limited upside and are typically mind numbing.” While this can alleviate one’s immediate fears, it might not be mentally engaging or purpose-driven. And over time, this begins to tell. “Your personal development will stagnate and there is nothing more tragic than that. Always remember there is always a downside whether you see it or not or, rather, whether they show it to you or not,” he avers. Looking ahead he wants to build an organisation that can serve founders at scale, who are in turn building solutions for the 2.1 billion people across India and SE Asia.

Making the country proud: Michelin-starred Vineet Bhatia becomes the first Indian chef to be awarded the MBE

(January 6, 2023) When Vineet Bhatia first moved to England in 1993 as the Executive Chef at Star of India, South Kensington, he had no idea about what a Michelin star was. Exactly three decades later, the chef who is also a restaurateur and an author, has been awarded the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE), making him the first Michelin-starred chef of Indian origin to be bestowed with the honour by the monarch of the United Kingdom, King Charles III. The chef took to social media to make this announcement, and wrote, "Honoured to be the first Michelin-starred chef of Indian origin to be awarded an MBE. (It’s) a wonderful privilege to have the opportunity to make the world ‘see things differently’ about the United Kingdom." He dedicated this honour to his mother and wife. A living bridge between India and the United Kingdom, the celebrity chef discusses much more than just his culinary journey as he connects with Global Indian from London.

Not a born chef

Born and raised in the city of dreams, Mumbai, Vineet, too, grew up with a dream of his own – to become a pilot. “I lived quite close to an aerodrome, and so I used to watch planes flying in and out every day. Being a pilot was the only plan I had as a kid,” says the celebrity chef, who also cracked the National Defence Exam to join the Air Force. “But I wasn’t tall enough,” he shares, adding, “They told me that I could join the Indian Army or Navy, but I wasn’t interested.”

Disheartened, but not defeated, Chef Bhatia turned towards the culinary world. But not before giving bartending a shot. “I wanted to become a bartender. But again, I wasn’t tall enough,” he laughs. However, his experience in the kitchen was life-changing. “As a 17-year-old, I was fascinated with how the kitchen was run so immaculately and that everyone involved was disciplined.”

After completing his training at the Oberoi School of Hotel Management, New Delhi, Chef Bhatia worked as the Chef de Cuisine or head chef at The Oberoi in Mumbai for the next three years. However, it was an uphill task initially. “In the kitchen, you have to earn the respect of your staff. When I first joined, one of my staff members told me, ‘I have more pending leaves than your whole experience.’ So, I worked hard to earn their respect. I told them that I wasn’t there to teach them how to cook, but to help them with whatever they needed to put out a great dish,” shares the chef, whose comfort food is a simple meal of tadka dal, chawal, and achar. “As soon as I land in Mumbai, I go to the pani puri stall and have a nice plate of golgappa and chaat. And later, some cutting chai,” share the chef with a smile.

A decade after moving to the UK, the chef and his wife Rashima Bhatia, opened their first restaurant, Rasoi in Chelsea in 2004, which earned him his second Michelin star in 2006. Since then, he has opened 11 restaurants across the globe including Moscow, Los Angeles, Dubai, Mumbai, Doha, and Jeddah.

Behind the scenes

While the dishes that come out of the kitchen look beautiful, the kitchen itself is a bit chaotic. “Kitchen is not easy. There are so many things happening at the same time,” the seasoned chef says. “The front of a restaurant seems so calm and controlled – which is the way it is supposed to be – but the kitchen is where all the action is going on. Everyone in the kitchen is running around to put that dish on the table. So, your movements have to be very coordinated. There is food in the oven, overhead grill, tandoor, and pan. There is a dessert going out and the plates are falling short… Something is happening in the kitchen at all times. It is a mechanism that works in tandem.”

Having opened so many restaurants, the chef calls it a long and tedious process. Apart from deciding the food and beverages that will feature on the menu, the restaurateur also has to work on its theme, colour palette, style, and overall ambiance. “We have to sit with the designers of course, and can take very long to decide all the factors, before the execution. The staff, again, has to be very well-trained, because otherwise, everything will collapse. So, we take time in training all of them.”

Man of many talents

A world-renowned chef, author, TV personality, and social activist – Chef Bhatia dons many hats. But not many know that “travel” has his heart. “My work takes me to places, but I enjoy travelling a lot,” shares the chef, who was very recently on a trip to the Arctic, an experience he calls “magical.”

Interestingly, Chef Bhatia is the only chef in the world to cook at the base camp of Mount Everest in 2018. Calling the experience “stunning”, the chef shares, “We were raising funds for a charity called Heart For India in Chennai, which looks after 3000 kids, and also for the victims of the 2015 Himalayan earthquake. So, my team and I trekked for 15 days to get to the base camp of Mt Everest and set up a restaurant for two days. We gave the mountaineers and trekkers free food, and whatever they wanted to donate went toward these two causes. It was one of the most incredible experiences of my life.”

An active campaigner for sustainability in the culinary world, Chef Bhatia was also recently appointed as the GREAT ambassador to the United Kingdom. “I think it is important that while we want to have the products from the international market, we have to ensure that they are ethically sourced. It is not just about using paper over plastic, but also about how the farming is done or how the meat is sourced,” explains the chef, before he signs off.

Simit Bhagat: Preserving Bhojpuri folk music and popularising migration genre

(July 24, 2024) Itna bata ke jaiyo, kaise dinwa beeti ho ram (While you are going, tell me how should I spend my time?) It’s a woman’s cry, pleading with her husband or lover, who is moving to foreign shores as an indentured laborer, to return home soon. More than 100 years later, these words of pain and longing have been kept alive through Bidesia — a genre in Bhojpuri folk music, loosely translated as “migrant.” Passed down through generations, this oral tradition is preserved in the heartland of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar by local artists. An art form that Mumbai-based documentary filmmaker Simit Bhagat is working to safeguard and conserve. “Bidesia is a form of Bhojpuri folk music that emerged in the mid 1800s when many men from UP and Bihar migrated to British colonies as indentured labourers, leaving their women in perpetual waiting and anguish. Music served as a balm for their pain and longing,” Simit tells Global Indian. To prevent this music from fading into obscurity, he made a 90-minute documentary, In Search of Bidesia, in 2019. A chance encounter with local artists in a village in Uttar Pradesh introduced Simit to Bhojpuri folk music, a genre largely unknown to the broader population. This instant connection nudged him to explore more and led him to the home of renowned artist Mahendra Mishra in Chhapra, Bihar. The three-day stay to record music inspired Simit to share the stories and melodies of these local artists. “He told me he doesn’t care about money, but he wants his music to reach people. Those words stayed with me. If I can help bring their music to a wider audience or give these musicians a platform, that would mean everything,” says Simit, who founded The Bidesia Project.

"The songs have been in the veil of oblivion for too long. It’s time the world knows about Bhojpuri folk music," he adds.

Journalist-turned-social development practitioner

With his roots in Konkan, Simit considers himself a Bombay boy after his parents settled in the city for a better life. A chance encounter with a journalist in his neighbourhood during his childhood left him in awe of the profession. “Seeing his confidence and authority, I was spellbound. That’s what first attracted me to journalism,” says Simit, the youngest of three siblings. A diploma in journalism opened up new horizons, shaping his worldview and landing him a job at the Times of India on the environment beat. After five years, his passion for social impact and development prompted him to pursue a master’s in Society and Development at the University of Sussex. His year in Brighton broadened his perspective on development issues and taught him to enjoy life more.

Armed with newfound knowledge, Simit returned to India in 2011, eager to make a tangible impact. “I wanted to move beyond research and apply what I had learned on ground.” He joined a UNDP project with the Mangrove Foundation in Sindhudurg, Maharashtra, to sensitise community on marine biodiversity. In the small town with limited social life, he’d spent weekends exploring nearby areas on a colleague’s bike with a camera in hand. This led to his first documentary, My Disappearing Farms, which addressed Sindhudurg farmers’ declining interest in farming, causing the next generation to seek small jobs elsewhere. “That’s how my journey into visual storytelling began,” Simit reflects.

Brush with Bhojpuri folk music

Later, he joined Tata Trusts, travelling across the country to identify organisations and fund their projects. Simultaneously, he satiated his creative side. “I’d always carry a camera and shoot short videos.” One such program visit took him to Delupur village in Jaunpur district in Uttar Pradesh, where he discovered Bhojpuri folk music for the first time. “I was fascinated. Everyone in that village could play an instrument and sing,” he recalls. He immediately recorded the performance on his phone. Even months after returning, the music stayed with him. “I often listened to the recording, and something in me urged me to dig deeper into this,” says Simit, who has been passionate about music since childhood.

In 2017, Simit took a short break to explore Bhojpuri folk music. “I crisscrossed across UP and Bihar on my bike for 15 days, starting from Allahabad and travelling through Ghazipur, Benaras, Buxar, Ballia, and Lucknow. With no plan, I’d randomly land up in villages inquiring about local artists. The universe conspired and I kept meeting one artist after another, recording their music. By the end, I had recorded 1 TB of footage,” smiles Simit.

Bhojpuri folk music is an oral tradition passed down through generations. “It’s an expression for people who have songs for different seasons and reasons,” says Simit, adding that Chaiti songs are sung during Ram Navami, while Kajri songs celebrate happiness and prosperity during the month of Sawan. Ropani songs resonate through farmlands during the sowing season. He recorded 92-year-old Saraswati Devi singing Jatsaar, songs of the grind mill. “Since grinding is arduous and requires physical energy, the women sing to encourage themselves, with themes of pain, migration, nature, and seasons,” Simit explains. Passed down to her from her mother, the song held a special place in her heart. “A few months later, she passed away and I realised if I hadn’t recorded it, it would have disappeared into oblivion. That’s when I understood the importance of preserving the intangible culture.”

Bidesia music – songs of migration

One form of Bhojpuri folk music is Bidesia – migration songs. While many people from Bihar and UP currently take blue-collar jobs in metro cities, Simit says this migration trend isn’t new. “During colonial times, people from UP and Bihar migrated to British colonies like Fiji, Mauritius, and Suriname as indentured laborers on five-year contracts,” he reveals. After slavery was abolished, plantation owners needed workers to maintain sugar production, the colonial empire’s main source of income. “They sought docile, abiding labourers and even tried Chinese labours but failed. Dubbed the Great Experiment, British officials turned to Indians who were reported as hardworking,” explains Simit, who found this information documented in the UK Archives during a visit to London.

In the hope of a better life, many people from these states agreed to leave for foreign lands. Calcutta being the nearest port, saw large numbers shipped out. “Since this region was impoverished and people couldn’t read or write, many false promises were made,” Simit reveals, adding, “Those taken to the Dutch colony of Suriname were told they were going on Sriram’s yatra, and Mauritius was referred to as Maarrich Taapu, stating it was a two-hour journey.” But it took them months to reach their destinations. Many died on the journey due to harsh conditions, as most had never even left their villages.

The migration to distant lands led to many broken families. With no letters, women waited for their lovers and husbands to return, giving birth to Bidesia music. “These were songs of separation and longing that women felt. Interestingly, certain songs are from a man’s perspective, explaining to women the reason for migrating to foreign lands.”

The migration to British colonies included not only men but also some women, particularly widows. “With no social standing, these women often took the recourse of migrating to foreign lands. Moreover, they were paid higher wages than men due to the skewed sex ratio in places they were taken to, to maintain balance in society,” explains Simit. Upon arrival, indentured laborers would wake up at 3 am and work in the fields all day. Even after the expiration of five-year contracts, these labours had no way to return home. “With limited or no money and their documents controlled by plantation owners, escape was nearly impossible. It was more like a trap, and many committed suicide upon realising they had no means to return,” Simit reveals.

The women continued to wait for their men to return, singing songs that were passed down to generations. Over time, oral traditions are dying with the emergence of popular music, which makes it crucial to preserve and conserve them. While migration now primarily occurs within the country, Simit notes that even the lyrics and music of Bhojpuri folk have evolved. However, he quickly points out, "Bhojpuri folk music is pure and nothing the popular Bhojpuri music. The local artists don't consider it an art form."

The Bidesia Project – Promoting local artists

After two weeks on the road, Simit had amassed enough footage to realise that a 90-minute film couldn’t do justice to the many local artists he encountered. “I knew it required a larger initiative to systematically document this music before it vanished. I wanted to create an archive where people could access and understand this music. That’s how the Bidesia Project was born.” As part of the project, Simit continues to record music when he can and uploads it to YouTube for wider reach. He often finds an audience among people from the Caribbean looking to reconnect with their roots. “These songs serve as a common thread connecting people from UP and Bihar, both in India and abroad,” says Simit.

Through the Bidesia Project, Simit aims to conserve and preserve Bhojpuri folk music, which is at risk of disappearing. “There’s so much work to be done, and I don’t think we’ve even covered one percent of it due to my struggle to balance work with passion,” says Simit, who runs an award-winning creative agency. He plans to scale up the project by adding more resources, ensuring it is not reliant on just one person.

Simit, who loves swimming and traveling, is also learning electronic music production. “I have a deep connection with music, which drew me to Bhojpuri folk music even when I didn’t understand the language. Now, I want to bring this music to a wider audience and lift it from the shadows of obscurity.”

A machine in time saves nine: British-Sikh engineer Navjot Sawhney’s prototype aids refugees, underprivileged

(February 8, 2022) “Divya” gave Navjot Sawhney purpose. In Kuilapalayam in Tamil Nadu, a British-Sikh engineer met an effervescent neighbour, Divya. Little did Navjot know that this 30-something woman was to change the course of his life, and add meaning with the launch of The Washing Machine Project. “During my stay, I met Divya, who spent her day doing unpaid labour. A London boy with a giving heart

Born in West London in 1990 to an aerospace engineer father and an assistant mother, Navjot was a curious child. “My father would often take me to air shows. I’d be fascinated by the big objects in the sky. I’d come home, take my toolbox and dismantle appliances. I was keen to know what’s inside. That curiosity helped me broaden my imagination, and took me into the direction of engineering,” says Sawhney. Joining the scouts as a child grew this British-Sikh engineer’s sense of community. “It was then that I learnt the importance of community and giving back - those important lessons inspire me,” he adds.

It's that same sense of purpose which made Navjot quit his high-paying job at Dyson (research engineer) to help the marginalised. After graduation at Queen Mary University of London (aerospace, aeronautical, and astronautical engineering), Navjot has his dream job - making products. Three years later, it dawned upon him that “every good bit of engineering is giving a product to the middle class or rich who already has it.” That “epiphany” made him introspect. “I knew I had the skillset and wanted to dedicate my engineering to helping people,” adds Navjot, who began working with Engineers Without Borders UK despite resistance from his mother. “It was one of my most difficult decisions as almost everyone was against it, including my mom. I asked her to give me a year,” recalls the British-Sikh engineer-innovator, who went to Kuilapalayam to help install fuel-efficient stoves with Prakti.

Nervous, he was ready to give up and return to the UK in the first few days due to frequent power cuts. “It was a culture shock and adjusting was taking a toll. I wanted to get back to my comfort zone. I am glad that I got over that phase quickly,” adds the Londoner, who witnessed India’s problems - sanitation, abject poverty, systemic issues in education, etc.

Prototypes from a British-Sikh engineer save time 

For the next year, the British-Sikh engineer threw himself into making stove prototypes, with innovation. When he befriended Divya, an idea germinated. “She married early, had two children, and spent three hours washing clothes that led to skin irritation and backache. Despite being educated, she missed the earning opportunities due to the time-consuming activity. At times, even her daughter missed school to wash clothes,” reveals Navjot, who wanted to help women like Divya. “Handwashing clothes is crippling and back-breaking in rural areas as women carry water from ponds. I spoke to women, they felt they couldn’t afford electric washing machines. That’s when the penny dropped,” says the 31-year-old.

He promised to make a manual washing machine but his time in India had come to an end. Back in the UK, he started work at Jaguar Land Rover (senior cost engineer). “A few months into the job, I started The Washing Machine Project in 2018 with a handful of engineer friends,” states Navjot, who had researched and identified the problem of washing clothes in 13 countries including Jordan, Uganda and the Philippines where they spent up to 20 hours a week on washing. The British-Sikh engineer was inspired.

Creating a foundation

At the same time, he enrolled at University of Bath (M.Sc in humanitarianism)  to unlock a social network and capital to the industry. “A classmate knew about The Washing Machine Project, and invited us to Iraq to show our prototype. Based on a salad spinner model, I built the prototype in two days. We interviewed 70 families at the Mamrashan Refugee Camp in Iraq, realised that 88 percent wanted and needed a machine. We published a report on our website - Oxfam read it, contacted us to pilot 50 machines. They funded us, and that is how we made our first manual machine in 2019 which we named Divya 1.5,” reveals Navjot.

The hand-operated machine has a 5 kg drum capacity, and comes with a washer and a spin dryer that is 75 percent faster than the hand washing. “You put all the clothes inside the drum, and turn the wheel manually. It saves time and water, and is not dependent on electricity,” adds Navjot, who has already sent 7,000 machines to 10 countries with plans to expand.

In terms of funding, a few agencies buy, or the machines are given free of cost to the needy. “We also have corporate partners. The machine is also commercially available on our website,” says the British-Sikh engineer, who has priced the machine at £50 (₹5,000).

While his friend Divya is yet to receive the machine due to technical challenges owing to the pandemic, Navjot has spread his wings to refugee camps in Lebanon, Jordan and Uganda. “Displacement is an issue close to my heart. My grandparents struggled during the partition, and my father was a refugee. So, I understand the struggles of uprooting yourself and making a new place home,” explains Navjot, who is currently in Lebanon on research.

British-Sikh engineer's idea that can save time

What began as a mission to design, develop and manufacture an affordable machine has now translated into something bigger. Navjot wants The Washing Machine Project to become the Dyson of the humanitarian world by creating cost-efficient products that help the needy. “As a board trustee of Engineers Without Borders UK, it’s my mission to make the next generation of engineers create an impact, and understand the importance of innovation for women like Divya,” says the British-Sikh engineer, who interacts with 3,000 students.

“To have the credibility and confidence in people to believe in what you are doing was one of the biggest challenges. Slowly, our work started getting recognised. For me, the happy moments have been the smiles on faces when they get the machine and experience the solution,” adds the British-Sikh engineer. Navjot plans to expand the project to 24 countries. Currently manufacturing in the UK, the plan is to shift manufacturing to India to ramp up production and save time.

Navjot unwinds by spending time with family. The stark reality of refugee camps has made him appreciate family time, especially with his two elder sisters. “I was seven when I lost my father and it was a difficult time. I was surrounded by women who nurtured and supported me. The power of the women in the house is phenomenal,” says Navjot, who is proud to be brought up by the women brigade, thus more empathetic.

Surabhi Yadav: Launching dreams through Sajhe Sapne

(April 26, 2023) “One day, women of Indian villages will be known for their potential, not their pain, for their aspirations, not their needs, for being leaders, not being led. We will make it happen, one Sapna Center at a time.” This is social entrepreneur Surabhi Yadav’s vision, which she realises through her project, Sajhe Sapne (Shared Dreams). The IIT-Delhi and University of California, Berkeley alumna has been working relentlessly to launch the careers of rural women in modern workforce.  Since 2020, Surabhi and her team have enabled rural young women grow their skills, salary, satisfaction, support system and most importantly, their opinions. Popularly known as ‘Sapna Centres’, the Sajhe Sapne training centres are run for a cohort of trainees called ‘Sapnewaalis’ (women who dare to dream). “Sajhe Sapne’s first cohort was from Bihar's Musahar community, one of India's poorest and most socially ostracised castes,” says Surabhi, in an interview with Global Indian. 

Launching dreams  

“There is no channel or pathway that connects modern workforce with villages,” says Surabhi and this is the gap she has chosen to address. Her non-profit is not into just providing livelihoods and creating gig workers but focuses on working towards the career development of rural women. 

“I have put into Sajhe Sapne all that I have learned over the years,” remarks Surabhi. Growing up in a Madhya Pradesh village, she was no stranger to rural women resigning themselves to sub-optimal dreams. She thought it was a matter of courage and wondered why these women refused to dream big. “I remember many women in my extended family telling me that when you grow up, employ me as your chaprasi (peon).” Why do they want to be just be satisfied with that, Surabhi often wondered.

“With Sajhe Sapne, my goal is to shift the mindset of rural women from that of a livelihood to one of career development,” Surabhi says. “The ideas that encompass a growth path make the full form of ‘Sajhe’ – “S for skills, A for agency, J for job retention, H for hope and sense of possibilities and E for ecosystem of support,” she adds. 

Over the last three years, Sajhe Sapne has trained a cohort of women from states like Himachal Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, MP, UP, Punjab and Maharashtra, from its Kandbari facility. “Our Sapnewalis have fire in their bellies and Sajhe Sapne fans that fire,” tells the founder and CEO. 

The Sajhe Sapne model of growth 

When Surabhi started out in 2020, she was brimming with ideas, but funds were scarce, so she settled on crowdfunding. She set out to arrange ₹15 lakhs for the startup but ended up getting ₹26 lakh within three days of her crowdfunding campaign. It wasn’t just family and friends – celebrities also took notice and re-tweeted her initiative, helping her exceed her collection target. “In fact, more people were willing to contribute but I stopped the campaign midway because I did not want to use so much money on the pilot run of my project, despite friends advising not to do so and allow money to come.” 

Now, Surabhi has come up with a unique model in which she instils a sense of responsibility in the alumni group (Sabal Sapna Dal), She tells them, “Once you graduate with a job, pay for someone just like someone paid for you.” 

She wants to make her alumni network strong enough to be the biggest investors, influencers and inspiration for the future batches. There is an expenditure of ₹96,000 on each trainee in the year-long residential programme at Sapna Centre. Surabhi is proud of the fact that her funding model has already started gaining momentum. “So far ₹4.5 lakhs have already been donated by former trainees,” she shares joyfully.

Sajhe Sapne has three career tracks for women to choose from to shape their careers - project management, primary math teaching and coding and web development. After they finish the year-long training programme, while Surabhi and her team try to bring employment opportunities, the programme also prepares women to look for job opportunities and apply on their own. “We try to bring in work opportunities from progressive organisations that value diversity,” Surabhi explains.  

The organisation also runs a one of its kind podcasts by rural women where people get to learn from their life and derive leadership lessons from what they have done differently to change their lives for the better. Such has been the impact of Sajhe Sapne's idea that apart from Surabhi’s eight-member team, some very well-placed individuals like a San Francisco based product designer working in Uber are volunteering for the organisation deeply believing in the cause. 

Life in IIT-Delhi 

Surabhi grew up in Khargone Madhya Pradesh and studied there until standard 12, after which she went on to do her BTech and MTech in bio-chemical engineering and biotechnology from IIT Delhi.  

Breaking barriers, she was the first person in her village to move to a big city to study. People in her community didn’t even understand the magnitude of her achievement when she secured an admission to IIT. “It was just another technical institute to them,” she says. “When I came to IIT, I realised it’s a big mela where you get to engage in so many things. I was awestruck with the three floors of library that had books that I could touch. It was such a beautiful experience for me coming from a village of scare resources,” she adds. “IIT became a big playground for me to explore interesting things.”

Surabhi’s interest in social development had begun early in her life, so after her M.Tech, she remained at IIT to work with a Professor of the Humanities and Social Sciences department as a research assistant. While thinking, reading, and writing about inclusive innovation and how to use technology for social good, she was soon neck-deep into development studies. It was the impetus that led her to University of California, Berkley to do a masters in development practice.  

Realising her dreams 

When she returned from California, Surabhi worked for an NGO for a short while and then started on her dream project. 

“My father is the first person in the village to get a full education and a sarkari job. My mother fought to study until class eight. Since they worked very hard for their own education, they were very committed to their children’s education. Also, they treated social work as a way of living and not as a moral obligation,” Surabhi tells. This is where her dedication for social development stems from.

Now a retired horticulturist, her father has helped many farmers without any benefit. “Being raised by such parents filled me with a sense of responsibility towards my community. In my formative years, I might not have known the phrase ‘social development’ but I grew up learning the importance of giving back to my community,” 

Project Basanti and BIRD 

Surabhi has been involved in other projects around gender equity and the rural development space. Her feminist bent led her to also launch Project Basanti – Women in Leisure, a multi-media project named after her late mother. “It explores time as a feminist issue and consists of a rich repository of photos and videos of women and girls taking time out for themselves.” Surabhi has been happy to see more than 20,000 people participating in interesting social media conversations around women in leisure. “Have you seen a well-rested woman,” asks Surabhi. Project Basanti is all about capturing such rare moments. 

Surabhi is also a co-lead at Billion Readers – BIRD, an IIM-Ahmedabad project. There, she assists the BIRD team to support the government’s language literacy initiative and improving reading habits of individuals. While people watch entertaining content on television or YouTube, subtitles encourage them to read, without pushing them to do so.  

Driven by purpose amidst nature  

To be able to work from Kanbadi is like living a dream for Surabhi. “Nature was important, a small place was important, not having a crowd was important. I get the quiet, I get the mountains and I get this beautiful organisation to run with a wonderful team,’ she smiles. “This place gives me the tranquility that requires to think creatively,” tells Surabhi who has been learning flute and sitar amidst the blissful quietude.

“I am walking in my balcony with the Dhauladhar mountain range and lush green fields in front of me,” she smiles as we come to the end of our conversation. Life is just the way she wanted it to be. Working amidst the beauty of nature, Surabhi is polishing up her development model while corporates line up to partner with her to open Sajhe Sapne's Sapna Centres in other villages as part of their CSR activities.
