A royal feast: Yuvrani Shraddha Bhonsle’s modern touch to Sawantwadi’s culinary heritage

(March 10, 2024) The Japanese word ikigai is used to describe the very passion that gets you out of bed in the morning—your reason for being. One conversation with Yuvrani Shraddha Lakham Sawant Bhonsle and her ikigai is unmissable. Spending 15-day workdays on things she is passionate about—cooking, reviving handicrafts, and living her life to the full—this 32-year-old royal is all about giving her best every single day.

Married into the royal family of Sawantwadi that has been ruled by Sawant Bhonsles since 1627, life has taken a huge turn for the Mumbai girl, who, in a real-life fairytale, has seen her transform post-her wedding to Lakham Bhonsle of the Savantwadi clan. Today, she is the chef and owner of the Sawantwadi Palace Boutique Art Hotel and the Managing Director of Shri Sawantwadi Lacquerwares, which oversees the handicraft business.

Energetic, passionate, and realistic, the young scion is all about creating a difference. Be it her unique cuisine that marries traditional Sawantwadi styles and dishes with international recipes or her hands-on approach to running the hotel, she is an exemplary example of modern-day royalty working hard to ensure that the legacy of the past is safeguarded for the future.

Chasing her dreams

Growing up in a large Gujarati joint family, Shraddha remembers her childhood with fondness. She recalls, “I grew up surrounded by friends and family; it was a very regular childhood from the 90s.” One person who had a lasting impact on the young girl was the principal of her school, Walsingham House, Mrs. Bindu Mittal, a legendary educator who inspired her to follow her dreams.

Shraddha pursued a business management course, but an instantaneous decision changed her life forever. The Global Indian explains, “It was a spontaneous decision, but something that changed my life. I always wanted to start a restaurant of my own, so I applied for the position of assistant stewardess at the Oberoi Mumbai, and that started my culinary journey.”

She went on to work at the popular Indigo Delicatessen restaurant in Mumbai, where, while she worked to the bone, she picked up the rudiments of running a kitchen. Be it 16-hour shifts, peeling potatoes by the ton, or washing endless vegetables, she did it all. “It was there that I realised that the kitchen is everything to me. A desk job was not something I was suited for, and the kitchen, temperamental as it is, is my home,” she states with a laugh.

The next step on her journey was studying at the Culinary Institute of America in New York for a 22-month course, where she also met her future husband. As a part of her course, she worked at the Michelin-starred restaurant Oceana, which she calls a life-changing experience.

“Though I was dangerously dehydrated while working there, I picked up both knife skills and life skills there,” she jests and adds, “I understood how an act as simple as picking basil or coriander leaves can add to a dish. The discipline and cleanliness as well as the rigor and passion of running a kitchen I picked up there taught me a lot.”

While she returned to India in 2016 to be closer to her family, she went back to the US a year later to be a certified sommelier before getting married in 2019 and moving to Savantwadi.

Princesses diaries

Just an hour’s drive away from Goa, situated in the Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra, on the Goa-Maharashtra border, Sawantwadi is a picturesque town famous for its sleepy forests, kokum, wooden toys, and delicious Konkan cuisine. Moving back and starting a restaurant was at the top of both Shraddha’s and Lakham’s agenda, and the heritage property seemed like the perfect setting for the young couple to start their dreams.

As the chef of the hotel and someone keen on innovation, she brings a unique flair to everything she creates. One dish that perfectly illustrates her culinary journey of bringing the best of the East and West is Sawantwadi Po’Boy.

She explains, “Po’Boy is a sandwich that originated in the US, so there is American influence (because of my education in the CIA) in terms of the classic French roll bread and a remoulade sauce. There is Asian influence (because of my love for Asian food) in the sandwich in terms of Vietnamese pickles and herbs and a spicy sriracha sauce, and there is Sawantwadi influence in terms of thetcha butter, rava-crusted prawns, and a solkadhi (sauce)”

Along with traditional Maharashtrian heartthrobs like aamti or thatlipeeth, she whips up eclectic dishes like the Sawantwadi Special Eggs Benedict (that pairs House-baked croissant buns with coconut chili chutney and a dry curry leaf chutney) and others using regional produce like cashew and kokum generously championing hyperlocal cuisine.

One area in which the restaurant distinguishes itself is when Shraddha serves Japanese and Korean dishes for dinner. A huge Ramen fan, she makes her own noodles and says, “I love these cuisines as they are very palatable to Indians. They are slow-cooked and are served with local ingredients. I want people to leave thinking they have never tasted food like what we make.”

That is something she is succeeding at, given that the Palace is slowly but surely gaining favor with gourmands, food aficionados, and new-age Indian travelers who go for experience as much as for sightseeing.

Given Shraddha’s extrovert nature, was it easy for her to adjust herself to the pace of a small village after the hectic life in Mumbai? She smiles. “It took me a while, of course, but now I have my work and my friends in Goa (which is an hour’s drive) apart from my family.”

Culinary royalty

Working with her husband (who is a baker and a pastry chef), the duo has simple ground rules. While he takes care of the finances, she is in charge of management, and when it comes to their first love, food, they agree to disagree. She shares, “We are friends first and foremost, so we decided that the cold kitchen is his territory while the hot kitchen is mine. While we do confer with each other on the dishes and respect each other’s decisions, we ensure that we never interfere with each other.”

The future is all charted out for the enterprising entrepreneur: to extend the number of suites in the hotel from six to ten, to convert the family’s erstwhile summer palace (in Amboli, which is a half hour’s drive from the palace) to an eco-resort, and to expand her kitchen garden.

Given her penchant for ikigai, one can see Yuvrani Shraddha Lakham Sawant Bhonsle achieving all this in no time!

f-Irish writer grew up in Grand Falls, New Brunswick, in Canada, had originally intended to be an actor and even found some success in her early career path. "Growing up in a small town, I was bored a lot. My dad was a technophile and we had one of those big, white satellite dishes in the 80s," Nadiya says. "Most people had only 13 channels back then, but we had a lot more. I watched a lot of TV." While there weren't too many shows for kids, there were sitcoms, and Nadiya watched them all. It sparked an early love for television, and for acting.

Life as an actor

Nadiya Chettiar decided to try her luck as an actor in Canada, and appeared in Little Mosque on the Prairie and The Best Years. She decided to take the leap and move across the country, from Toronto to Vancouver. "I had seen some success as an actor in TO, and thought that I could ride that wave all the way to Vancouver. Well, the wave crashed on the pacific shoreline, leaving me without any job prospects, and wondering what the h*ll I just did," she said in an interview. Her timing couldn't have been worse - she moved just as the writers' strike had hit LA and also dried up work in Vancouver. "It was a terrible career move," she admits.

That wasn't all. "I had spent nearly 80% of my acting career wearing a headscarf (because I look vaguely Muslim, sorta Eastern European," Nadiya recalls. "I was getting frustrated with rarely getting to represent people like myself in the parts I was auditioning for." Also, her intution had been telling her that "there was something out there in the world that I thought I would be better suited for, but I didn't know what that thing was."

Finding her calling

It turned out that "thing" was writing. Back in Toronto, Nadiya Chettiar had been involved in a long distance relationship with a guy she "really admired, and who happened to be a great writer." For nearly two years, they stayed in touch through writing, and Nadiya loved reading his emails. "I felt challenged and it made me want to write better, more creative, more funny letters," she says. They stopped keeping in touch when she moved to Vancouver, but Nadiya realised it "wasn't just love I was pursuing with my 'creative and funny' love emails. I wanted to learn how to be a better writer."

Her first attempt at a writer was for a radio play, which she calls "an obvious first step." This grew into a desire to write for TV - after all, she had spent her childhood hooked to sitcoms. Using the radio play as a writing sample, she applied for an online writing course at the Humber College, in Toronto. "That was the beginning of me practicing to write for TV," she says. "I wrote a few TV scripts in that program, which were terrible. From there I continued to write and take classes and grow."

Nadiya had stayed in touch with her TV contacts and when it was time to find work, she reached out to them. One showrunner in Canada connected her with other young women writers in Vancouver. She had also worked on building a solid portfolio. Then, she met Jennica Harper, who helped her get her first job as a script coordinator / junior writer on a kid's multi-cam sitcom, called Some Assembly Required. That was followed by Package Deal, where she worked with Andrew Orenstein, of Third Rock from the Sun and Malcolm in the Middle fame. Not only was this sitcom for adults, it also shot before a live studio audience. "We got to rewrite on our feet and pitch new jokes between takes and let the audience decide what worked," Nadiya said. "It was so much fun and immediately rewarding."

Relocating to LA

Nadiya's first job in LA was as the Executive Story Editor on Life in Pieces, a 2015 USA sitcom that ran for four seasons.

From there, she joined the team at Mom, another Chuck Lorre show set in Napa Valley, California, about a dysfunctional mother / daughter duo. In fact, Nadiya was so inspired by the show when she first watched it, that she even wrote a spec script (speculative screenplay) on Mom for an extension class she happened to be taking at UCLA. So actually making it to the team of writers was a big moment.

"This was my first experience with group writing and they had a really unique way of working," Nadiya recalls. This was during Covid and although the team worked in person, the writers were in their own part of the building. "Normally you would be on set, in a 'video village' where you're nearby watching it happen," she explains. "But when they were shooting the last episode of the show we did get to be on set. It was just mind blowing to have studied the show eight or nine years previous and and to actually be there as they're shooting the last episode."

She then moved on to Housebroken, an American sitcom starring Lisa Kudrow and Clea DuVall. The reviews were "generally favourable" according to Metacritic but the series wrapped up after Season She joined Young Sheldon in 2022, for Season 5.

"In some ways, it's very different and in others very similar to what I have done before," she says, about Young Sheldon. "Similar as in you begin with a blue sky, you're just starting to think about what happens." The best part, she says, "Is getting approvals from Chuck Lorre. He's very much involved but he's involved also with a lot of other shows." On a show as big as Young Sheldon, the job involves working in a boardroom with a team of other writers.

Advice to young writers

Striking an emotional connection with people, and being able to make them laugh or cry is never easy. "The biggest challenge is that trying to make people laugh involves putting yourself out there," Chettiar says. "You're showing people what you think is funny, what you think period, and that's revealing something about who you are."

The key to being a writer, though, she feels, is to keep at it anyway. "Perseverance is key. Don't worry if you don't feel talented enough - you never will," she says. "My biggest challenge? Not giving into thoughts that I'm a terrible writer and just carrying on."

Saiyami also took notes from cricketer Yuvraj Singh to prepare for her role as a cricketer with disability in Ghoomer. “A lot of preparation– physical and mental– went into creating the character. Yuvraj Singh helped me prepare mentally for the role,” says Saiyami, who believes that a sportsperson does not just prepare physically but also mentally. Ghoomer is inspired by the story of Karoly Takacs, the late Hungarian right-hand shooter who won two Olympic gold medals with his left hand after his other hand was seriously injured.

She also trained with former cricketer Murali Karthik for her role. Since she played the role of a left-handed cricketer, she preferred a left-handed batsman and bowler to train with. “Murali was a specialist slow left arm orthodox bowler known for his loopy trajectory and ability to spin and bounce. He was the perfect cricketer to train with,” says Saiyami, who studied at St Xavier’s college, Mumbai.

Movies

Primarily working in Telugu and Hindi films, Saiyami, the grand daughter of actress Usha Kiran, made her acting debut with Telugu film Rey in 2015. She followed it up with Hindi movie Mirzya the following year. In 2020, she appeared in the web series ‘Breathe’ and the next year, she was starred alongside Tollywood star Nagarjuna in the action film ‘Wild Dogs.’ Born in Nashik, Saiyami’s father Advait Kher was a renowned supermodel while her mother Uttara Mhatre was former Miss India. Saiyami’s sister Sanskruti is a Marathi actress.

Bike packing in Italy

The Nashik born shot a first-of-its kind travel documentary on bikepacking in Italy in July this year. The actress rides a mountain bike to cross the Italian mountain terrain while she shoots the documentary. “I took up this project owing to my love for sport and adventure, which I am extremely close to. I spent 2.5 weeks covering different landscapes of Italy including towns, mountains, beachside and countryside,” informs the 30 year old.

She says the documentary aims to bring forth awareness of the new trend of bike packing to India. “Bike packing is a favourite amongst adrenaline lovers who move across a country with a bicycle and a bag whilst exploring and taking short breaks in between. This has been one of the best trips of my life and a project I was most excited about,” says Saiyami, who was awarded with ‘superstar of tomorrow’ (female) by Stardust in 2016.

Saiyami shot the documentary along with actor and television personality Rannvijay Singha and three more cyclists. “We cycled over 300 kms. The distance wasn’t the problem. I was worried about the luggage while cycling. I did my first pass which was around 2000 metres in a day. And we climbed around 4000 metres in all,” informs the adventure freak.

Saiyami believes that exploring a place is best when you can do it on a cycle. “I have bike packed before from Berlin to Prague and fell in love with exploring places on a cycle. Which is why I couldn’t wait to do this bike packing trip in Italy. On tough days my motivation was finishing in order to eat pizzas and gelato,” laughs Saiyami.

The most challenging parts of the ride were the climbs. The hot weather, rain and hailstorms made it extremely difficult. “I have been used to riding on flat terrains. Gravel biking was something new to me. Nonetheless, it was fun,”says the actress, who is used to climbing mountains, swimming in lakes and go trekking in Himalayas ever since she was a child.

Before the project, Saiyami trained hard but her shoots would come in between. “I would go to the hills for training. I also had a stationary trainer bike at home. But it was not enough and I wish I had more time to prepare well,” she says.

Coming soon, Agni

So what more movies are in the pipeline? “I am looking forward to Agni, where I play the role of a fire fighter,” informs Saiyami, who received the best actor award (female) for her role in web series ‘Choked’ at the Filmfare OTT awards in 2020. She was last seen in the movie ‘8 A.M. Metro’.

She has plans when it comes to adventure too. “I have been training to do the Ironman. But due to work commitments, it got postponed twice. Hopefully, I will do it soon,” says Saiyami, who is learning snowboarding and kite surfing. “Adventure keeps me alive,” she adds.

“When I first landed in Africa, I missed my mother a lot who loved me too much,” says Adatia in an interview with India News. The youngest of six siblings faced many challenges there as the language, culture and people were new. However, he carried on the struggle to establish a foothold, receiving immense support from his elder brother. He looked at the new country as an avenue to reach closer to his goals. “God is not just in temples or mosques; he is within each one of us. If you believe in yourself, God will give you immense strength to rise above yours fears and uncertainties,” he said during the interview, adding “cleanse your inner self to see God within you.”

Working as a salesman in a grocery store, he dreamt big enough to start a store of his own after spending a few years of grooming his customer service skills and the other nitty-gritties of running a grocery business. There were many setbacks on the way but Adatia persevered, going on to establish a chain of stores. With time he expanded his business in sectors like manufacturing, retail, import and export, and warehousing. Today COGEF is the leading wholesaler, and number one player in the cash and carry retail market in Africa.

Taking risks in his stride  

Adatia has encountered a fair share of challenges in running a group of companies on a foreign land. When his first business venture was scaling new heights, his grocery store was massively destructed by local goons. Adatia was shattered but did not give up and built up the business from scratch, making it reach greater heights and finally shaping it into the COGEF Group - a multi-million-dollar business conglomerate.

In 2020 the philantropreneur was kidnapped in Mozambique and released from its Maputo province. Undeterred, he continues to influence people about the virtues of doing good. “Money is not everything, Honesty is life. It gives us direction, respect of others and helps us be grateful to God for all we have,” he said during one of his motivational talks.

Rizwan Adatia’s foundation, RAF Global, established in 2015, is committed to improving the quality of life of the most marginalised communities in Asia and Africa. Driven by a strong sense of service, he has been contributing a good part of his profits into a wide array of philanthropic causes, and socio-cultural development. 

The international board of RAF Global consists of professionals of repute from different walks of life working in Asian and African countries to meet the foundation’s international development commitments and to ensure efficiency of its programmes.

The foundation has built schools in earthquake-hit regions of Kutch, constructed girls’ hostels and donated public welfare funds. It has also adopted Junagadh’s Maliya Hatina village for its overall development. The philantropreneur celebrated his 50th birthday with 44 lonely senior citizens and differently abled couples of Gujarat, taking them to their first international trip to Singapore and Malaysia. On another occasion he had organised a cruise trip for 45 female senior citizens of Porbandar, his home town.

Adatia is a motivational speaker who helps youngsters and entrepreneurs to scale new heights by promoting the idea of resilience and positive thinking. The entrepreneur believes in the magic of yoga. “Yoga has so much power that if you devote 10-15 minutes to it every day, you will be strong enough to face all challenges of both mind and body,” he advised youngsters in one of his speeches. 

Talking in the context of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan the entrepreneur says:

It should not be only about cleanliness of our environment but also about getting rid of our inner shortcomings.

A film and a book  

A film adaptation of the entrepreneur’s biography was out in the theatres in 2020. It portrays the life of a daring 10th failed guy who worked hard enough, without bowing down to challenges establishing 22 cash and carry supermarkets, 130 retail wholesale outlets, and four manufacturing units, employing more than 2,500 people in eight countries of Africa, generating goodwill along the way.

Nageshwar Reddy: The Germany-educated doctor behind one of Asia’s finest gastroenterology institutes

(July 1, 2021) As a child, he gave his parents nightmares with his mischief and penchant for scientific experiments. However, today he is one of the most respected doctors in the country and the man behind the prestigious Asian Institute of Gastroenterology (AIG),  The Indian government honored him with the Padma Bhushan in 2016, and more recently, Dr D Nageshwar Reddy became the first Indian to receive the Rudolf V Schindler Award, the highest honor from the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE).   The Nagi stent Over the years, Dr Reddy’s hard work, determination, and vision have paid off and today AIG (founded in 1994) provides affordable medical care to millions of people across the world. Dr Reddy has a strong sense of giving back to society. He had invented a gastric stent 15 years ago, called the Nagi stent. He gave the manufacturing rights to a Korean company on the condition that it should be affordably priced. Nagi is the largest selling stent in the world today

Journey to success 

Dr Reddy's journey has been fascinating: The eldest of four siblings was always a troublemaker as a child. His curiosity led him to try his hand at various experiments; some with disastrous results.

One time, he wanted to see how petrol burned, leading to him accidentally burning down their garage. Another time, he innocently put his one-year-old brother inside the refrigerator to “protect him from the harsh summer heat”.

Needless to say, his parents were worried and sent him to a boarding school at the age of seven. That became a turning point in his life. His focus shifted to academics and he decided to become a doctor like his father D Bhaskara Reddy who was a well-known pathologist.  

Family of doctors

Coming from a family of medical professionals, meant Dr Reddy found inspiration within his family. He has two brothers, who are successful bankers and engineers. "The brightest of us all is our sister who did MSc Chemistry," he smiles. His wife Dr Carol Ann Reddy, a dermatologist, and daughter Sanjana are his greatest strengths.

“The one Indian-ness that has remained with me throughout is being family-centric," he says. 

After school, he went on to study medicine at Kurnool Medical College, but it was during his MD at Madras Medical College that a young Nageshwar Reddy got interested in the field of gastroenterology and liver diseases. Thereafter, he went to Germany to receive specialized training in gastroenterology at the University Medical Center Hamburg- Eppendorf. Upon his return, he first joined the Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) and later the state government services in 1984. 

"That was when I realized that gastroenterology was not given enough importance; many felt that gastroenterology and liver diseases did not warrant a separate institution. Nearly 30% of the population suffers from gastrointestinal diseases,” he says.

“I decided to quit the government service and start a gastroenterology hospital to cater to this large mass of patients." Dr Reddy has previously received several recognitions including the Master Endoscopist award in 2009, ASGE International Leadership award in 2011, and Fellow of American College of Gastroenterology in 2012. He has published over 495 papers in national and international peer review journals.  

Captain of the ship

"The creation of an institute of the magnitude of AIG Hospitals with its capabilities not only of patient care but training many junior doctors and doing cutting-edge research in the medical field is the one thing that gives me maximum joy when I look back at my journey," says Dr Reddy. Today, the hospital’s research wing has tied up with the Center for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), North Western University of Chicago, and the University of Texas Medical branch for Genetic Research.

"This journey has helped me develop patience and has encouraged me to be more forgiving," he says. Staying focused an/d following one’s passion is important for those who are just starting off on their own journeys says the doctor who considers himself a Global Indian. His favorite Global Indian though is Fareed Zakaria the Indian-American journalist and political commentator.  

As someone who likes to read books on philosophy, Dr Reddy says that the one thing that helped him ride the tide was the book Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind, by Yuval Noah Harari.  

Hurdles overcome

Dr Reddy, who received the Rudolf V Schindler Award last month for pioneering medical work in the field of gastroenterology, has faced his fair share of hurdles in his journey. "But if one has the will, one can overcome any obstacle," he says, adding that AIG, the biggest gastroenterology hospital in the world, was started with support from many friends and liberal donations. But how does he manage to work 18 hours a day?

"If you enjoy your work, it does not feel like a burden and you will not be tired."

Breaking the 9 to 5 office mould

In an exclusive with Global Indian, on a day’s visit to the just-launched 110,000 square feet of space that is The Quorum in Hyderabad, he shares details about his idea. He reveals how the club is more than just a place to work or relax after a guided tour. “We had set up The Quorum in Mumbai and Gurgaon and it took us two years to get the Hyderabad venue up and running. The place has everything you could need — to work, entertain, relax, hold an event, or even have a meeting, without the pretentiousness of a five-star property.”

The Quorum’s facilities geared towards wellness include two internationally certified padel courts, a pilates studio, a room for yoga, a pool, and a gym. There is also a restaurant, a members’ lounge and bar, and smaller, private rooms to hold a book club reading and conduct meetings or events. Kids are allowed only on Sundays.

Vivek is passionate about inviting speakers on a range of subjects, and the club’s activities across cities include hosting fashion pop-ups, and using the space on the walls as a gallery to promote art. The newly-launched Hyderabad club had its first show in collaboration with Srishti Art Gallery and their in-house curator ensures art gets its due importance across all three properties. He adds, “Every month we will be collaborating with different galleries and artists because I believe art is and should be an important conversation to have.”

According to an article in Forbes magazine, ‘The fastest-growing workplace isn’t home or the office, but some third place — a coffee shop, hotel lobby or, increasingly, private clubs.’ And, focussing on this trend, within five years, The Quorum has helped bridge the gap for people who are frequent travellers and are aware of trends and luxury experiences they might wish to replicate in India.

More than a club membership

The membership profile for The Quorum, according to Vivek is, “Men and women who are global Indians — upwardly mobile, have a larger goal of wanting to make an impact, and are curious about other ideas and have multiple interests. People who want to push boundaries on conversations on varied topics from geopolitics to AI; who have an interest in listening to opera or watching a Bharatnatyam performance.”

Vivek and his team showcase talents across fields; and with the club’s credibility now firmly in place, people approach them to host events — whether it is to talk about ideas or deliver high-quality content. Just the April calendar for the Gurgaon venue included events like an art soiree, a live jazz performance by Tanya Nambiar, a meditation session every Friday morning, a talk on women in business hosted by a woman member, and a conversation on sustainable fashion with designers like Nikhil Mehra, Gaurav Gupta with Anju Bhandari. Another talk with the lawyer Indira Jaising, and a whisky-tasting session along with readings from a classic by Naseeruddin Shah were on the agenda too. The Hyderabad one for its part hosted an opera night, a live sitar recital, a qawwali and a ghazal night, a conversation with the previous Governor of the RBI, D Subbarao, and a live performance by Mama Tips and The Goa Crew to name a few.

Vivek admits that some events are crowd pullers and some conversations have barely a handful in the audience, but it doesn’t deter him from pursuing this paradigm of offering something more than a club.

Keeping in mind the high-profile members, many of whom are HNIs, the club is tastefully done up. From the comfortable seating to the wall-papered library which even has a secret door that leads to a private room; an installation hanging from the ceiling, echoing the movement of birds during a murmuration, by Delhi-based origami artist Ankon Mitra to the spacious dining area, the pool etc., everything spells luxury sans the snob element. The staff is friendly and the entire space is meant to make you relax. When asked how The Quorum is different from the regular clubs, Vivek reiterates, “Those clubs are not always focussed on giving you the best quality. Even as we push the boundaries on various subjects, our kitchens promise you an excellent culinary experience too with global cuisine on the menu.”

All these facilities come at a price. The standard joining fee is a one-time, non-refundable deposit of Rs five lakhs, and an annual fee of Rs one-and-a-half lakhs. What you spend on food and drinks is extra. The fee gives you access to this space and its facilities, two of The Quorum’s other clubs in Gurgaon and Mumbai, and 75+ clubs across 28 countries it has associated with. Though there are other membership tiers — for entrepreneurs, women, and those who fit the profile and are under 30 — the one-time fee has been waived off.

Offices of tomorrow

Vivek, who has in the past worked with leading hospitality brands, has also set up his second flagship brand called district150. Elaborating on the brand’s name and idea, he says, “According to Robin Dunbar, an anthropologist from Oxford University, 150 is the total number of stable, meaningful relationships a person can have in their life. That is why cavalries have only 150 members, and a human being can remember a maximum of 1500 faces and 500 names. With this narrative in mind, I set up district150 which is a meetings and events venue driven by hospitality and is a space built with the future of work and lifestyle in mind. It’s an amenity for the office building of tomorrow which can add significant value as a venue for corporate meetings and events during business hours and as a social venue after working hours.” It is a cross between an office and a hotel and you can host meetings and events here; there is also a progressive Indian casual dining restaurant called Zila. The brand has partnered with Subko, for their artisanal coffee and chocolate experience.

In the past, Vivek has headed development for Fairmont Raffles Hotels International and was responsible for the group’s growth and expansion efforts across South Asia. He has been a board member of SUJAN Rajmahal Palace and was instrumental in repositioning this marquee boutique heritage-palace hotel, part of the prestigious Relais & Chateaux collection, as one of the top luxury hotels in the world. He is a founding member and events and programming Chair of ULI (Urban Land Institute), India. He is currently also involved with Changemakers of Gurgaon at Scale, an organisation working towards making Gurgaon a more vibrant and sustainable city that figures among the top 50 cities of the world.

With his larger goal of making an impact while remaining a profitable business, Vivek plans to expand to other cities like Delhi, Bengaluru and Goa. This, despite fighting the constant challenge he faces as a first-time entrepreneur – that of attracting and retaining the right talent. Still, he stays committed to his goal of establishing a brand with high credibility that slowly brings change into the way we conduct business or hold conversations.
