Odisha’s red ant chutney hailed by Gordon Ramsay gets GI tag

(January 24, 2024) “Now this is what I have travelled into the wild for, the chutney,” says Michelin-star chef Gordon Ramsay in his documentary when he travelled to India in 2010. Clad in a blue tee and beige cargo pants, he tries the red ant chutney served on a leaf. “It’s hot but absolutely delicious,” he remarks, adding, “I am never going to touch mango chutney for the rest of my life.” Keen to know what makes the chutney so delicious, he finds himself escorted to a nearby jungle where a man climbs up a tree and cuts a branch that has what looks like a nest. Upon closer examination, he finds that it’s a nest for fire ants – and the chutney in question is Odisha’s Kai Chutney which has bagged the GI tag recently for its unique taste and texture.

Rich in protein, zinc, vitamin B-12, calcium, potassium, magnesium, iron et al, the Kai chutney, made from weaver ants, is found in the Similipal forests of Mayurbhanj district and has become a quintessential part of their culinary culture. If experts are to be believed, the savoury chutney helps boost the immune system and prevent diseases. Early this month, red ant chutney was awarded GI (Geographical Indication) tag for its exceptional health benefits and nutritional value. The tag serves to safeguard the unique flavour profile, preventing the dilution or replication of the dish, and the global recognition will help pave a deeper understanding of the superfood.

The making of the chutney

In the Mayurbhanj district, numerous tribal families earn a livelihood through the collection and sale of these insects and chutneys. They have cleverly included red ants in their daily lives by harvesting and making tasty dishes that highlight their unique flavours, finding sustainable and innovative ways to use this natural resource. They collect kai pimpudi (red weaver ants) and their eggs from nests, meticulously clean them before making a semi-solid paste chutney by grinding a blend of salt, ginger, garlic, and chilies in a pestle mortar, which increases its shelf live to one year.

“The chutney is popular not just for its delicious taste but also for its medicinal properties. It addresses coughs, colds, aches and pains. The ants’ high levels of formic acid, amped up by seasonings, make this chutney extremely hot,” Pobitra Mandal, a Mayurbhanj native said in an interview, adding that ants are tastiest as larvae or adults. “This is when the ants are optimally developed and produce maximum flavour.”

About 500 tribal families make a living by collecting and selling these insects, along with a chutney made from them. Due to high demand, they can sell large amounts at village markets and fairs. The price for a kilogram of live kai pimpudi is around ₹400-600, and the chutney sells for ₹1,000.

According to Nayadhar Padhial, the secretary of Mayurbhanj Kai Society, each year around three quintals of kai pimpudi is collected by tribals from the forest in the district. “We started the society in 2018 to promote kai pimpudi chutney by organising tribal food festivals and awareness meetings,” he said in an interview.

Promoting the rich culture of the state

The red ant chutney is not just restricted to Odhisa but is a pivotal dish among the tribes of Chattisgarh’s Bastar region. Chefs from India and abroad often indulge in tours that showcase the process of harvesting and storing red ants in indigenous communities. Even the Belgadia Palace in Mayurbhanj takes pride in showcasing its culinary delight to the world. “Our property has its trees and we have enlisted a member of a local tribe to collect the ants from the trees. Then, our chef, also from a tribe, prepares the chutney the traditional way,” Sautam Pramanik said in an interview.

The recognition of red ant chutney with a GI tag has propelled Odisha’s superfood onto the global culinary map. This unique culinary creation, crafted by around 500 tribal families, not only showcases the innovative use of a natural resource but also highlights the rich culinary traditions of the region. With its distinctive flavors and sustainable harvesting practices, red ant chutney stands as a testament to the diverse and remarkable gastronomic offerings emerging from different corners of the world. This GI tag not only adds value to the local economy but also positions Odisha as a hub for culinary innovation, inviting global attention to the intriguing and delicious world of red ant-infused delicacies.

Finding her path

Immersed in this traditional upbringing, being an entrepreneur wasn’t part of the plan at first for Deepikka Jindal. Her primary focus was on nurturing her family, and when the time came, she wholeheartedly embraced her role as a homemaker. At the age of 19, Deepikka married into the illustrious Jindal Steel family. It transformed her life profoundly, and introduced her to a new, diverse set of roles and experiences.

“While fulfilling my duties as a wife and mother, I also had the privilege of travelling extensively with my husband, and gaining exposure to a wonderful tapestry of cultures and environments,” Jindal says. “It enriched my global perspective and broadened my horizons.” These were pivotal life experiences, marking a period of growth and learning.

All the while, she continued to nourish her deep passion for art and culture, first through her upbringing in the culturally vibrant city of Kolkata, and later through her extensive travels. She would channel this by creating beautiful and inviting spaces for special occasions and family gatherings.

Deepikka Jindal may not have imagined then where this passion would lead her. As she approached her 40s, she founded Arttd’inox as a passion project. Her idea took off. Today, with 10 stores across the country,  Arttd’inox is a distinguished company in its own right under the JSL Lifestyle umbrella. Her mission is to transcend the ordinary, which she does by taking everyday objects and transforming them into elegant works of art.  “This journey allowed me to seamlessly merge my lifelong fondness for design with a newfound entrepreneurial spirit, creating a harmonious fusion of passion and business,” she says.

Jindal’s mission does not end with aesthetics. She is committed to the revitalisation of India's craft traditions by partnering with artisans from diverse regions. Arttd’inox partners with heritage artisans across India, weaving traditions like chasing, metal raising, hammering, Dhokra, Tarkashi, and stone inlay into their stainless-steel creations. “We are empowering artisans to delve deeper into their crafts, encouraging them to explore different materials and techniques while showcasing their work in the global market,” Jindal explains. The artisans are also brought up to date with new designs, motifs, materials and colour combinations, so that their work can meet contemporary demands as well. “This also sparks new product ideas for diverse markets,” she remarks. “By enabling artisans to access new markets and create innovative products, we have contributed to increasing their income, thereby improving their living standards, and supporting their families,” says Jindal.

An eventful journey

With over ten state-of-the-art Arttd'inox stores across India, Jindal admits that her entrepreneurial journey has allowed her to blend her profound commitment to crafting beautiful spaces with her newfound entrepreneurial spirit. This she says is a harmonious fusion of passion and business, and it has been extremely fulfilling. “Through this journey, I have come to realise that we are not merely products of our past but also architects of our future.”

The journey has helped her gain valuable insights into overcoming challenges to achieve a higher purpose. A deeply spiritual person, she has learned to maintain her connection to her spiritual, physical and mental well-being, as she makes strides in the business world. “As I look back on the path that brought me to where I stand today, I am brimming with gratitude for the unique mix of opportunities, challenges, and personal growth that have moulded both my life and me,” says Jindal.

A firm believer that neglecting self-care is unsustainable, both in business and personal life, Jindal is clear that taking time for oneself, engaging in activities that bring happiness and inner peace, is imperative. “For me, spirituality is the cornerstone of this self-care journey. Through my spiritual endeavours, I have experienced a profound impact on my personal and professional growth. It has brought a sense of calmness, enhanced my ability to prioritize, and provided clarity for making decisions,” says Jindal who is a staunch follower of Raj Yoga meditation, deeply rooted in the Brahma Kumaris tradition. By prioritising what truly matters and shifting her mindset, she has consistently found a harmonious balance between work and life. This approach has always been her way of dealing with challenges.”

Life lessons

Throughout her entrepreneurial journey, she has picked up some valuable life lessons that have truly shaped her perspective towards work and life. “I have learned that tough times are not roadblocks; they are stepping stones to personal growth,” says Jindal. Maya Angelou’s words, ‘You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated’, have been her “guiding star.” Learning to face challenges directly and keep a constant check on herself is an essential part of her journey. “It helps me adjust, reconfigure and make progress towards my goals, step by step.”

Deepikka Jindal has transformed herself from a timid young woman, to a go-getter, showing resilience when times are tough, and being patient always. “Challenges are not setbacks; they are opportunities to build character and become stronger. I have also come to understand the immense value of working together as a team. Building and nurturing a strong, united team is key. Success is often a group effort, and a cohesive team can achieve much more than an individual.”

Advice for budding entrepreneurs

Build a lasting brand rather than chasing trends, Jindal believes. Resilience and persistence are often the keys to success. “Exercise caution against impulsive decision-making and opt for well-considered choices informed by research and insight,” she says. “Moreover, understand the profound power of teamwork in achieving your entrepreneurial goals. Also, never underestimate the sigknificance of your physical and mental well-being; it not only guides optimal business decisions but also contributes to your long-term health and success. Lastly, incorporate practices like yoga and meditation into your routine, cultivating the calm and focus essential for navigating the entrepreneurial journey,” says Jindal.

Jindal’s plans involve a concentrated effort to solidify the brand’s presence within the national market, focusing on Arttd'inox's reputation as a high-end lifestyle brand celebrated for intricate handcrafted designs, eco-consciousness, and opulent offerings. “We are also enhancing our online presence and collaborating with global artisans and designers for limited edition merchandise. Ultimately, our vision is to make stainless steel a consumer lifestyle brand rather than just an industrial material, enriching everyday life with its exceptional artistry and quality,” she concludes.

How Geetanjali Shree’s Ret Samadhi translation is longlisted for Man Booker

(March 25, 2022) When Geetanjali Shree was a young girl her mother would often joke about how she wanted to tell stories more than she wanted to hear them. Today an established Hindi author, her last book Ret Samadhi was recently longlisted for the Man Booker International Prize. The brilliant author of five Hindi novels and five short stories, Geetanjali started her writing journey as a nine-year-old. "I was fascinated by stories and always wanted to write my own," smiles Geetanjali during an interview with Global Indian. "My mother would narrate stories to us siblings. Also, since my father was a bureaucrat, we had several people working for us at our house. I remember listening to stories from those ladies as a child. I was mesmerised by how words could create a whole new world, which was so engrossing. While she attended an English-medium school, the scarcity of English-language children’s books turned out to be a “blessing in disguise” for her. “I used to read Chandamama and Nandad as a child, and that gravitated me towards tales from the Ramayana, Mahabharata, Arabian Nights, Panchatantra, Kathasaritsagara and Chandrakanta Santati. Had I not experienced this childhood, I am not sure if I would have been able to write these stories,” reminisces the author who has no doubt been influenced by her historian husband.

Even when she moved to Delhi to pursue bachelor's in history from Lady Shri Ram College, Delhi University, and later master's from Jawaharlal Nehru University, Geetanjali felt a tug towards Hindi literature. “In JNU, I was pretty sure that I wanted to pursue writing in Hindi. My dissertation topic was on Hindi literature representing the nationalist thought of the pre-Independence years, in which I focussed on Prem Chand and his writings.”

Slow, but steady... 

Calling herself a “slow writer,” Geetanjali feels that she started her professional journey as a writer a little late. Her first story, Bel Patra (1987) was published in the literary magazine Hans, however, it was the publication of her short story collection Anugoonj (1991) that catapulted her into the Hindi literary scene. Post this, several other works of Geetanjali, including Mai (1993), Hamara Shahar Us Baras (1998), Tirohit (2001) and Khālī Jagah (2006) hit the bookshelves across India.

However, it’s her 2018 novel Ret Samadhi that has put her on the global map. Translated recently into English as Tomb of Sand by Daisy Rockwell, it has become the first Hindi-language novel to be nominated for the International Booker Prize. Calling it a “proud moment,” she is quite happy to have scripted history. “It is a very proud moment for me, not just as a writer, but also as an Indian. This will bring a certain focus on Hindi literature and other Indian languages. We need people to realise that there is so much literature waiting to be discovered.”

Ret Samadhi narrates the story of an 80-year-old woman, who is depressed after her husband’s death. Eventually, the lady comes out of the depression and decides to visit Pakistan to finally confront the past that she left behind during the Partition.

Giving an insight about the much-talked-about book, she shares, "Actually it was the image of a woman in a joint, orthodox, middle-class family, who was sitting with her back turned, that stayed with me for a very long time. Somewhere it made me wonder if she was turning her back to the people around her, or her life. It took me around seven to eight years to finish Ret Samadhi.”

An author who likes to create a dialogue with her reader through all her books, Geetanjali's work is not limited to the Hindi literatis. Many of her books have been translated into English, French, and even German. However, the author doesn't believe in picking her own translator. “I have never picked any author to translate my books. I feel I have been lucky in that area, as the translators have done justice to my work. In fact, I had never met Daisy Rockwell, when I heard that she was thinking of translating Ret Samadhi into English. However, when we spoke about the book, I realised that she had a sense of emotions and relationships in the book,” she smiles.

Not just an author 

While she doesn't like calling herself a “theatre person,” the author has worked with prominent thespians such as Anuradha Kapur and Kirti Jain on various plays. Having written many plays for the theatre group Vivadi, Geetanjali shares that she loves working in an interactive environment. “Writing something for theatre is a collective exercise, with everyone from the director to the actors and others contributing to the storyline. I really like working like this,” she adds.

When Geetanjali isn’t busy weaving magic with words, she loves listening to music. “I love a whole range of genres – Hindustani classical, old Bollywood, jazz, Baul and Rajasthani folk,” she concludes.

A man of knowledge

While not much is known about his childhood, Dean Khurana shared that his family moved from New Delhi to Queens, New York when he was just a toddler. Brought up in the largest of the five boroughs of NYC, the young kid was sharp and very observant of human behaviour, and that is what led him to pursue a bachelor's degree in industrial relations from Cornell University. He later earned an MA in sociology from Harvard and his Ph.D. in organisational behavior through a joint program between the Harvard Faculty of Arts and Sciences and Harvard Business School in 1998.

Since a young age, Dean Khurana was interested in pursuing a career in the field of education. And soon after he earned his doctorate, he became the founding team member of Cambridge Technology Partners and from 1998 to 2000 he taught at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. After spending a decade at MIT, Khurana and his wife Stephanie were named master and co-master of Cabot House at Harvard University, and the couple still holds the position.

Later the same year Dean Khurana became the Marvin Bower Professor of Leadership Development at Harvard Business School and professor of sociology in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. "Most of the significant challenges and opportunities we face in the world are not things that anybody faces alone. They require building a foundation of trust and understanding, while also finding common ground with others. It’s hard for me to separate students, faculty, and administration — and while I know different people play different roles, ultimately I believe we are all 'Harvard'. How we work together and how we share our diverse perspectives have led to a deeper understanding of each other. This type of capacity-building has been central to creating a supportive and diverse living environment where students can safely embark on their journey of intellectual transformation," the Dean had told Legal Desire magazine when asked about why he includes his students' opinions for every small decision.

At the helm of Harvard

In 2014, Rakesh became the Dean of Harvard College. In his announcement, former Dean Michael D. Smith said, "Khurana brings to the deanship an intimate understanding of the Harvard College experience, a profound commitment to the values of a liberal-arts education, and a warm and compassionate personality that accompanies his belief in the importance of community and an inclusive approach to decision-making."

But, even when the students and faculty members were gearing up to welcome their new head, Dean Khurana was working on college policies to ensure that diversity and inclusion at Harvard. "Our diversity is our strength. To me, diversity of intellectual thought, which is deeply enriched by people who bring different cultural perspectives and lived experiences, is what is most valued here at Harvard College. We are educating our students to be citizens and citizen-leaders in one of the most diverse societies in the world, one that is becoming even more diverse, and the challenge for the American experiment — the challenge for the global experiment — is how we continue to thrive in that world, rather than retreat into tribalism, conformity of values, and closed-minded thinking," the dean had said during one of his initial speeches at the University.

A strong leader, and a dear friend to his students, Dean Khurana has been working hard so that Harvard students and faculty members find the opportunities to ensure the mission of the college is accomplished in a way that is both consistent with its values and meaningful within the current educational landscape. Even during the global pandemic, when other educational institutions were struggling, Harvard, under Dean Khurana's leadership, reported increased levels of participation among their students by the third week of online classes.

A true legend, the greatest ever. In February 2015, as I landed in the Bengaluru Airport after winning the Grammy Award, I got a call from a landline number. I picked up the phone and a young 16-year-old voice asked me in Hindi, ‘Is this Ricky Kej,’ I said yes, and asked who it was?. She said, ‘I am Lata.’ I replied, ‘Who Lata?’ I did not know any Lata! She repeated, ‘I am Lata, a singer,’” to which Ricky questioned again.

Just then her manager came on the line saying, “This is Lata Mangeshkar… The Lata Mangeshkar!!!!!.” Kej goes on to add, “I apologised profusely, she laughed. I joked with her that she sounds like a 16-year-old! She laughed even more and told me that a lot of people say that.” Mangeshkar even asked Kej to call her “didi” not maam. He added, “She told me she loves my style of music and she listens to it a lot. We also spoke about my grandfather, who coincidentally she knew… Always so humble, gracious and generous with her time and words. Lata Didi will live on forever, through her voice and through her kindness.”

Even the seven-time Grammy Award-nominated musician Anoushka Shankar felt the blow, recalling her father and sitarist Ravi Shankar’s strong bond with her, “I feel slayed by this news. I had such a good fortune to interact with her through my father. Their relationship was so special. Thinking of her with so much love and gratitude for what she gave the world.”

English singer and songwriter Boy George paid his "deepest" condolences. Tweeting about Lata Mangeshkar, he wrote, "R.I.P Lata Mangeshkar one of India's most beautiful voices. My deepest condolences to her family and most especially to her sister Asha Bhosle who sang on Bow Down Mister. A gifted family."

How Lataji influenced an artist’s saxophone

Subbalaxmi, also called Saxophone Subbalaxmi told Global Indian, “Lataji’s passing away is a global loss but I am certain her voice and songs will live forever and be an encouragement to our young singers. I started learning saxophone in the classical Carnatic genre. Lataji’s songs impacted me to start playing Bollywood songs. Knowingly or unknowingly, I always choose her songs to play on my saxophone. Her voice is etched in my memory forever!” says the musician has given more than 3,000 saxophone performances worldwide.

Closer to home, singer Sona Mohapatra who made her debut on the Times Square Billboard in 2021, called her passing “an end of the golden era of music.” Sona tweeted, “If I were to choose the one single spirit that has inspired India since Independence to aspire for excellence and also experience divinity, it would have to be #LataMangeshkar. Her passing is truly the end of the golden era of film music. #omshanti.”

Recalling her first meeting with Lata Mangeshkar at Sonu Nigam’s house, Sona wrote, “Upon touching her feet to take her blessings, she sang two lines of my song from Talaash, Jiya Lage Na and told me that I should keep singing such songs. I was shocked that she even knew me. She went onto regale us all with the changing language of songs, the lyrics and also cracked jokes about the political scenario, I realised why she had been at the top of her game for so long, so bright, vital, ‘cool as cool can be’ and in touch with her environment. An empress, timeless and forever. Lata Didi, you will continue to inspire generations to come.”

Breaking the glass ceiling

For Grammy nominated singer who has been rocking Euro indie charts, Vineet Singh Hukmani, Mangeshkar’s legacy is unequivocal, “I will always admire Vineet Singh Hukmani Lataji for breaking the glass ceiling globally, not only as a supremely gifted singer but also holding the Guinness world record for recording 50,000 songs in 14 languages! This had inspired me hugely! This year, I won my gold disc world record as the first artist in the world to hold nine number 1 singles on the European Indie Top 100 in 2021, I would like to dedicate this first baby step to her omnipresent greatness.”

Even as the whole world united in their grief, Lata Mangeshkar’s songs that span 1942 to 2022 have brought caste, creed, religion, country and people together. It’s something that at least February 6 will be revered for – when music brought unity amongst all.

Meet Mangesh Ghogre, the only Indian to construct crosswords for New York Times and LA Times 

(November 2, 2021) The next time you attempt solving an NYT or LA Times crossword, do keep an eye out for the byline. It’s quite likely that the crossword you’re attempting to solve would have been constructed by a young Mumbai-based investment banker, who’s had a passion for crosswords since his engineering days. Meet Mangesh Ghogre, the 41-year-old executive director and head of equity capital at Nomura Holdings, who has been the only Indian to have his crosswords published in some of America’s top publications and is the first Indian to have judged the American Crossword Puzzle Tournament directed by New York Times.   At a time when most of his peers were busy cracking the GRE and GMAT to go to the US, Ghogre was busy solving crosswords least expecting the puzzle to one day transform his life in ways he could only imagine. The Panvel boy who made it big 

Born in Panvel, on the outskirts of Mumbai, in 1980, Ghogre led the life a typically middle-class Indian in the 1980s would. His father worked at the Reliance plant there and his mother was a homemaker. Their lives revolved around Mumbai and Nagpur (their hometown) and there was little to no exposure to a world outside of India. This was after all an era with no internet connectivity, cable TV or Hollywood films in the country. After his schooling, Ghogre opted to study Mechanical Engineering from VJTI in Matunga and moved into a hostel to avoid long commutes.  

It was around this time that he and a few friends got together and decided to move to the US after their engineering course in search of greener pastures. There was a hitch though: English was not their strong language, most of them were more fluent in Hindi. Their go-to resource back then while preparing for GRE and GMAT, was the Barron’s word list. “But these were not words that we used in everyday lives,” Ghogre tells Global Indian, “It was around this time that I began trying to solve the crosswords that would appear in The Times of India in a bid to improve my vocabulary.”

For the love of crossword 

The crossword though was no easy feat and many of his friends eventually gave up. But Ghogre kept at it. “In retrospect it was my motivation to crack the GMAT and also the fact that I was curious about the answers which I would refer to the next day,” he explains, adding, “It was only much later that I realized that these crosswords were syndicated from the LA Times. We didn’t have any exposure to American culture, let alone American slang, back then. And the crossword is usually a reflection of society and its culture.” 

Ghogre would religiously try to solve the crossword every single day and would check the solutions the next day and make elaborate notes. His diaries were divided into neat sections: slang, animals, religion, geography, flowers, etc. He’d created his own mini-Wikipedia. Over the years, he began to put two and two together and was finally able to begin solving the crossword completely about eight years later. By this time, it had become a habit that he couldn’t do without.

The crossword had opened up a whole new world for him: of American culture, society, geography, food, wildlife and even cinema. American slang like dough, grand, hero (sandwich), break a leg etc became commonplace for him. It also introduced him to the rivers in the US and animals like coyote, llama, and emu. “I’d never heard of these animals before, let alone seen them. When internet finally came to India, I went to a cybercafé to look these animals up to see what they looked like,” he recalls.  

Life changing grid 

The crossword had fascinated him and he’d carry it with him everywhere. “In the process, I was thrown out of class for solving the crossword mid-lecture, I’d carry it to the canteen and even the washroom. My friends would laugh at me,” smiles Ghogre. “Now they’re in awe of what the small black and white grid did for me.” 

The crossword had truly changed his life; he is now considered an authority on it. As time went by, Ghogre got better and better at solving the puzzle. Though he didn’t manage to crack the GMAT and move to the US, he did land a good job when he graduated in 2000. However, a few months later, that job offer was withdrawn due to the dot come bust. “I spent a year at home jobless because of the market situation. I prepared for CAT to do my MBA but didn’t get into the IIMs; it wasn’t a great time. That’s when I took to crossword more strongly. It was my solace; it was addictive.”

He eventually did his MBA from Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies and embarked on a career as an investment banker with ICICI Securities. He also worked with SBI Capital and HSBC before being appointed by Nomura as executive director in 2016.  

Through it all, his love for crossword was going strong. “But I also began noticing that all these crosswords had American bylines, there were no Indian names on the scene. I began researching and came across blogs that analyse the puzzle and also spoke about how to construct one. So, I thought why not give constructing a crossword a shot,” says Ghogre.  

The only Indian constructor 

He sent his first one to the editor of LA Times. Though it wasn’t selected, the editor did encourage him to keep at it. That’s when Ghogre came across a lady Nancy Salomon, a veteran crossword constructor. The two began corresponding by email and she coached him through the nuances of the making a good puzzle. Several tries later, Ghogre’s first crossword was published in the LA Times in September 2010.  

Since then, Ghogre has had several of his crosswords published in international publications. The ultimate though was when his work was featured in New York Times, which is considered the Holy Grail of crosswords. Today, he is counted among the top crossword constructors in the world and has been invited to judge the American Crossword Puzzle Tournament as well. That was when Ghogre finally got on a plane to visit the continent he’d learnt so much about through his 15x15 black and white grid. “It was a fantasy come true for me. I finally saw so many of the things I’d learnt about,” he says.

Bringing in the desi flavour 

In his own way, Ghogre also ensures that he educates Americans on some Indian nuances. In 2019, on the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary, he designed a special crossword with the word Gandhi and a few other Indian terms that was published in New York Times. “There is no other icon as Global Indian as Gandhi and I, in my own way, had the world celebrate him on that landmark occasion,” he smiles.  

A typical crossword takes Ghogre about a year or 1.5 years to construct, due to the complexity involved. “Each crossword has to have a specific theme, has to pass the breakfast test (words that one would be comfortable using at the start of one’s day), and conform to the grid’s symmetry. So, it is rather time consuming to construct a crossword; it is a solitary activity,” says the father of two, who has had his crosswords displayed at the prestigious Kala Ghoda Arts Festival.  

“Crossword didn’t just change my life, it is my life,” says Ghogre, who has been an investment banker for 17 years, but has been solving crosswords for 25. “My nirvana moment was to be able to sit on the same local train that I used to all those years ago in college and solve a crossword with my byline.”
