(March 2, 2026) A single day in February 2021 would go on to change Dr Jaydev Matapathi’s life forever. It marked both the end of one chapter and the beginning of another.
At the peak of his career, when he was travelling across India conducting specialised courses, a ghastly road accident left the highly skilled dentist bedridden for almost 10 months. It was a turning point that forced him to reframe not only his life but also his approach to his profession.
In the process, Dr Jaydev’s commitment to his “patient first” philosophy became stronger than ever. For the first time, he experienced prolonged pain, helplessness, and uncertainty — not as a doctor, but as a human being. “That phase changed me completely. It made me understand pain beyond textbooks and clinics, and introduced me to the emotional and psychological side of suffering,” reflects Dr Jaydev, in a chat with Global Indian.

Expertise
With over 50,000 successful treatments, including 11,000 implant cases and more than 2,000 smile makeovers, the UK-trained Dr Jaydev is renowned for his expertise in handling challenging and critical cases, including complex endodontic retreatments for failed root canals.
“Dentistry isn’t just about fixing teeth — it’s about restoring confidence and peace of mind,” says the dual-trained dentist and smile design expert, who integrates his cutting-edge training with a personalised approach for every patient at his state-of-the-art clinic, Dr Jaydev Dental, in Hyderabad.
From smile designing to advanced dental care, Dr Jaydev’s work combines artistry and science, ensuring that every patient leaves with not just a healthy smile, but a renewed sense of self.
US and UK journey
His international journey in dentistry grew from both necessity and ambition. Coming from a modest financial background, he wanted to expand his opportunities. “Importantly, I wanted to test myself on global academic and clinical platforms,” says Dr Jaydev, who pursued advanced international qualifications and examinations across the US and the UK. In 2017, he cleared the National Board Dental Examinations in the US, taking his exams in New York.
Years later, he went to the UK and received advanced training and certifications in Microendodontics and Smile Design, which equipped him to offer top-tier services — combining the latest innovations in dental care with precision and excellence.
His membership in the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland and Glasgow signifies his elite standing in the field. His ability to combine the latest dental technology with a compassionate, patient-centred approach has earned him acclaim worldwide.
“These milestones were not easy. They demanded discipline, sacrifice, and relentless preparation, but they significantly strengthened my clinical foundation and global outlook,” says Dr Jaydev, a recipient of multiple prestigious awards from the Indian Association of Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics.

A turning point in the UAE
Dr Jaydev also explored professional opportunities across the Middle East, including Dubai, Sharjah, Qatar, and Abu Dhabi, and successfully cleared the licensing examinations required to practise in these regions.
During this period, he had the privilege of meeting several accomplished professionals who influenced his thinking. One moment that remains deeply personal to him was his interaction with Dr Joy, head of Dr Joy Dental Care in Dubai. After a detailed discussion about Dr Jaydev’s work and training, Dr Joy told him: “India needs young doctors like you. Your expertise is needed by your country.”
Those words stayed with him. “They quietly reshaped my direction and reinforced my decision to bring my skills, training, and experience back home and serve here with full commitment,” says the renowned dentist, who has performed over 7,200 root canal procedures — a number that speaks volumes about his expertise in microscopic dentistry.
Roots in Andhra Pradesh
Born in Kadapa, Andhra Pradesh, into a humble middle-class family, both his parents were dedicated government employees. Their disciplined, value-driven lifestyle shaped Dr Jaydev’s early thinking.
“I grew up in a protected yet free environment in a typical middle-class household, where love, responsibility, and education were given the highest priority.” Watching his parents work tirelessly to provide their children with quality education left a deep impact on him from a young age. “Their belief was simple but powerful: education is the most reliable tool to change one’s fate and serve society meaningfully.”
A carefree childhood
Dr Jaydev completed his schooling at Nagarjuna High School, where his life largely centred around academics. He was not heavily involved in sports or competitions, but enjoyed playing cricket with friends every weekend.
“I was a carefree and happy child by nature, not driven by big titles or positions. I just wanted to live happily and peacefully, spending time with friends.” However, witnessing his parents’ struggles and sacrifices gradually gave him clarity and seriousness about education and personal growth.
“Academically, I stayed consistent and focused, guided more by discipline and values than pressure,” recalls Dr Jaydev, who grew up believing that success is not only about achievement, but also about character, integrity, and contribution.
From MBBS aspirant to dentist
Dr Jaydev’s journey into dentistry began with honesty rather than glamour. “Like many children from middle-class government employee families, my first aspiration was MBBS.” However, he did not secure a medical seat and did not have the financial backing to pay for one. “Dentistry was the available path, but what began as a practical choice slowly became a deeply meaningful calling. In many ways, I did not choose dentistry — it chose me.”

Handling challenging cases
As a full-mouth rehabilitation specialist and smile design expert, almost every case that comes to him is challenging, as treatments are often complex and time-consuming. “Each patient presents a unique situation that needs careful diagnosis, planning, and execution.”
Once, a patient walked into Dr Jaydev’s clinic expecting a routine root canal treatment, but during diagnosis, it turned out to be oral cancer. “Because of early detection and timely referral, proper treatment could be started and the patient recovered.” Recalling another case, Dr Jaydev speaks of a young girl who approached him for a smile makeover. “When she met me, she was very under-confident. But after her dental veneers, her confidence transformed beautifully.”
Another memorable case was of an elderly patient who, after full-mouth rehabilitation, was able to chew comfortably again and resume eating healthy food. “Seeing such life changes is deeply rewarding,” says Dr Jaydev, who has been honoured with the IACDE Clinical Excellence Award in 2019, 2020, and 2021, recognising his consistent dedication to advancing the field of dentistry.
Dental health in India
Dr Jaydev says dental health awareness in India is improving. However, compared to the West, people are still more treatment-focused than prevention-focused. “Most people visit a dentist only when they are in pain, whereas in Western countries routine check-ups and hygiene visits are normal practice.”
He emphasises that good dental health is actually simple: brush twice daily using the proper technique, clean between teeth, control sugar intake frequency, and get regular professional cleanings and check-ups. “Small habits prevent big problems.”
Why dental care feels expensive
The renowned dentist explains that dental care feels costly in India mainly because most treatments depend on imported materials and advanced equipment. Running a safe, sterilised dental clinic also involves high setup and maintenance costs. “Quality dentistry is skill-intensive and time-consuming. Unlike medical care, dental treatment is rarely covered by insurance.”
Another major reason is that many patients delay visits, allowing small problems to turn into complex and expensive procedures. “To make dental care more affordable, there needs to be a stronger focus on prevention and early check-ups, better dental insurance coverage, improved public dental health programs, more patient education, and support for reliable local manufacturing of dental materials,” Dr Jaydev points out.
Dr Jaydev’s influence extends beyond individual patient care. He has trained over 500–600 dentists through his coaching classes on complex root canal procedures and smile designing, empowering others in the field to deliver the same level of care. His commitment to education and mentorship has shaped many specialists who now carry forward his values.
“I brush my teeth twice daily, get interdental cleaning and periodic scaling. I never ignore early signs like sensitivity or gum bleeding. Prevention first, treatment later — only if needed,” smiles Dr Jaydev, whose routine is simple and disciplined.

Faith and discipline
He starts his day with a prayer, then checks his weight and health markers. “I do yoga and exercise regularly to stay fit and calm,” says Dr Jaydev, explaining how he maintains balance while managing work that is both physically and mentally demanding. He reads extensively and spends most of his free time immersed in books.
