Chidananda Naik on winning La Cinef Award at Cannes 2024: This is just the beginning

(June 21, 2024) Brushing shoulders with some of the biggest names in the world of cinema at the French Riviera last month, Mysuru-based filmmaker Chidananda S Naik found himself in a state of deep gratitude and awe at the 77th Cannes Film Festival where his short film, Sunflowers Were the First Ones to Know won him the La Cinef Award. “My heart is filled with gratitude. This win is not just mine; it belongs to everyone who was a part of this project and every Indian who backed us, especially from Karnataka, as we proudly represented India on this global stage,” he tells Global Indian.

Cannes 2024 proved to be a landmark year for Indian cinema at the prestigious film festival with several participants scripting history, including the 29-year-old filmmaker. It is for the first time that a film made by a student from the first year Television course at FTII, Pune has won an award at the Cannes Film Festival. Humbled by the win, Chidananda says, “I genuinely feel that this is just the beginning. Our success at Cannes has opened new doors and inspired us to continue creating films that resonate globally.”

Making India proud

Growing up, Chidananda had never imagined himself on a stage as big as the Cannes Film Festival, making his debut feel surreal and an experience he calls incredible. “It was such a huge honour to represent India.” As a member of the contingent that made India proud at Cannes 2024, the filmmaker is thrilled to have witnessed the historic triumphs of Indians at the film festival, a period he calls his “most memorable moment.” “I saw history being written in front of me and what a year for India! It started with Mansi Maheshwari, her anime film Bunnyhood won third prize at La Cinef, followed by Anasuya Sengupta, who became the first Indian to win the Un Certain Regard Best Actress award, and then Payal Kapadia, whose film All We Imagine won Palme d’Or,” he smiles.

For an emerging talent like him, film festivals play a crucial role, offering a platform to showcase their talent to a global audience and industry professionals. “La Cinef, formerly known as Cinefondation Selection, are particularly important because they are specifically created mainly to inspire and support the next generation of international filmmakers,” says Chidananda, whose short Kannada film was among the 18 entries selected from film school students worldwide.

Bringing a popular folklore to the forefront

Taking a leaf out of a popular Kannada folklore Ajjiya Jamba, the 16-minute short film tells the story of a village plunged into darkness by an elderly woman who steals a rooster. This act triggers chaos as the villagers frantically search for the missing rooster, believing it is essential to restore daylight. To bring the rooster back, a prophecy is invoked, resulting in the exile of the old woman’s family.

Chidananda cherished the folklore since childhood, but during his time at FTII, he discovered that it was only well-known in Karnataka and remained a mystery to people outside the state. “My editor, Manoj V, and I have always wanted to make a Kannada film, and the possibility of bringing the story world we imagined to life was really fascinating to us,” adds the filmmaker, who had only four days to shoot the film that was a part of his coursework at FTII. However, he remained focussed on taking the best shots and reflects that the filming process taught him to be “meditative in the chaos.”

Shot entirely under the cloak of night, the film uses darkness to weave a tale of mystery and suspense, pulling the viewers in the villagers’ desperate struggle, thus making night itself a vital character. “It was extremely difficult to shoot with all the limited resources and rules. We were super exhausted but really satisfied with the shots we achieved,” says the filmmaker, who found his crew in his batchmates. “Suraj served as the Director of Photography, Manoj was the editor, and Abhishek handled location sound and mixing,” reveals Chidananda, noting that other artists joined them to assist during the filming.

Doctor-turned-filmmaker

It’s hard to believe that the award-winning filmmaker once aspired to be a doctor. Born in Shivamogga to Prof Shekar Naik, Head of Department of Food Sciences and Nutrition at Yuvaraja College and Vinoda Bai, Chidananda was “never interested in cinema nor thought about it much.” His passion initially lay in medicine, leading him to enroll at Mysore Medical College and Research Institute for his MMBS. Ironically, it was medicine that initially drew him towards art. “From the first year, we delved into anatomy through dissection, understanding the human body in great detail. Yet, I often pondered about emotions and feelings, which are also essential aspects of being human,” says Chidananda, who found his expression in filmmaking, and joined FTII, Pune after completing his MBBS.

“We are all born first and then we decide how to spend the rest of the days before turning into ashes. There is no blueprint to life that dictates what we should do. I just decided to be happy and do things that make me and people around me happy. It’s more about coming to terms with myself and finding my expression of life. These thoughts led me to resonate deeply with art and literature, ultimately guiding me towards filmmaking. It wasn’t that I was unhappy studying or practicing medicine, nor was I doing it solely for my parents. Instead, it was a realisation that my true passion lay elsewhere,” says Chidananda.

The road ahead

Pivoting to filmmaking turned out to the best decision for Chidananda, who met a bunch of talented people at FTII, thus helping him hone his craft and make impactful films. He reserves a special mention for Neeraj Voralia, a mentor whom he deeply admires. “He is a true blessing to students at FTII.”

With La Cinef Award under his belt, the passionate filmmaker is now gearing towards making a mainstream film. “I will share updates in a proper way as the project progresses. I can’t reveal too much at this stage,” says the man who has brought Kannada film to the forefront at a global stage like Cannes with his film Sunflowers Were the First Ones to Know. “We are motivated more than ever to make films that tell compelling stories and connect with audiences worldwide. The journey ahead is exciting, and I believe we will see many more Kannada films gaining global acclaim in the future,” he signs off.

From Pune to Pennsylvania

Born in a middle-class family in Pune, Narasimhan's childhood was no different than any other ordinary child's in India. A brilliant student, the young boy would often sneak out of the house with his brother, to play cricket with their neighbourhood friends. In an interview with The Sunday Times, which was published earlier this year, he said his childhood was “tough”, recalling the death of his older sister who passed away before he was born, and how his elder brother died at the age of eight due to kidney infections.

A high-achieving kid from a young age, Narasimhan earned a degree in mechanical engineering from the College of Engineering, University of Pune. He spent his college days regularly travelling home to care for his father who fell severely ill at the time. Of growing up in India, he said, “you learn resilience, you learn tolerance, you learn to find a way through”. A “collection of scholarships and two jobs” helped Narasimhan go abroad for further studies, where he pursued an MA in German and International Studies from The Lauder Institute at the University of Pennsylvania, and an MBA in Finance from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.

Along his journey from India to the USA, the man didn't just pick up degrees. According to several media reports, the executive is a hyperpolyglot and can speak as many as six languages. Narasimhan is fluent in German, English, Spanish, Hindi, and two other Indian languages.

Driven by purpose

After he finished his MBA, Narasimhan started his career with a global management consulting firm, McKinsey & Company. In his 19-year-long stint with the company, the executive held many positions around the world, and eventually became a director and location manager of McKinsey’s New Delhi office. In 2012, he joined PepsiCo, where he rose through the ranks, supervising operations in Latin America, Europe, and sub-Saharan Africa, and becoming a chief commercial officer. Not many are aware that Narasimhan was in the running to get the top job after Indra Nooyi stepped down as the CEO of the company. However, the job went to Ramon Laguarta.

In 2019, Narasimhan was hired as the Chief Executive Officer by Reckitt Benckiser, which was going through a rough phase, burdened by $16.6 billion takeover. Despite the company's ill-fated split with Mead Johnson, it took Narasimhan only a few months to start selling the underperforming operations. In 2021, the executive was lauded by Reckitt's investors and stockholders for steering the company through the pandemic. Speaking to McKinsey during an interview, Narasimhan said, "When I became the CEO of Reckitt I decided that I would take six months to lay out what I thought the company should be and where we should go. As part of that, I spent a lot of time in our markets. I sold with our salespeople and met with customers. I immersed myself in our R&D. And that’s how we got to our purpose: to protect, heal, and nurture in the relentless pursuit of a cleaner and healthier world."

Starbucks is currently navigating a burgeoning unionisation push following a difficult phase for workers during the pandemic. Talking about the importance of hiring Narasimhan as the top executive, the current CEO of the coffee giant, Howard Schultz said, "He’s a true operator and has the DNA of an entrepreneur," adding, that his background in technology and supply chains would be invaluable to the company. Schultz is expected to remain in charge of the company for the next several months before Narasimhan takes over as the CEO. The top executive is set to draw $1.3 million (about Rs 10 crore) as his annual base salary as the CEO of Starbucks. He also received a signing bonus of $1.5 million and a replacement equity grant with a target value of $9.25 million

The business executive, who has also worked in various MNCs, including Amazon and Time Warner, is also a designated Young Global Leader of the World Economic Forum and serves on the board of directors of Dolby Laboratories and Change.org, and was recently named a Henry Crown Fellow at The Aspen Institute.

Inspired by her father

Born to Punjabi-Hindu immigrants from India, the business executive grew up in Flint, Michigan. Her father operated a plastics recycling plant in the town. An ambitious child, Anjali would take part in various projects and also represented her school in many competitions. With aspirations of becoming a playwright, Anjali would cast her brother and sister in plays that were brought to life for an exclusive audience of two: their adoring parents. "I was really shy as a kid. Acting, dancing, and singing were a really nice outlet for me," she recalled during an interview.

The first turning point

However, a turning point in her life came, while she was at the Barnes & Noble store with her father, where they found a book called The Best High Schools in America. "I didn't know there was a thing called prep schools; I didn't know that was a thing that existed," Anjali recalled. While initially didn't wasn't sure about applying to these schools, it was advice that her father, which changed her mind. "My dad's given me great advice. Probably one piece of advice that I give to others that he's given to me is to live outside of your comfort zone. It speaks somewhat to the philosophy of 'put yourself in positions where you might not have a ton of experience," the business executive said.

And his words worked like magic. Anjali started applying to prep schools as an experiment. She courageously ventured beyond her comfort zone and used it as a launching pad for her future accomplishments. The business executive shared, "We didn't know what we were doing. My dad bought me the book. The next day, I started applying. I applied to maybe 30 schools, ranging from a military academy to a Catholic school. I didn't know anything."

The youngster's efforts earned her a place at the prestigious Phillips Academy, a private school in Andover, Massachusetts, where she finished her schooling. The business executive then attended the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania from 2001 to 2005 and graduated with a B.Sc. in Finance and Management.

Climbing the corporate ladders

Soon after graduating from college, Anjali worked as an investment banker even though she knew that the banking life was not included in her long-term goals. "I did it for really one reason, which is I wanted to be well-versed in finance, and I wanted to see how value was created and destroyed," she shared. And between 2005 and 2014, the business executive worked in various companies, holding positions in finance, media, and e-commerce.

However, her shining moment came, when she joined Vimeo, as Head of Global Marketing in 2014. It was again the advice of her father that made her leave a tried and tested path, and join a company that wasn't faring wasn't faring quite well. "It's something I feel like I've done my whole life," the business executive shared in an interview, while talking about pushing her boundaries, "Leaving home at 14, going to Andover, where I didn't know anything, I was definitely outside my comfort zone then. In many of the roles I've had at Amazon and certainly at Vimeo, I've been in situations where it wasn't like I had the playbook and I knew exactly what to do."

The rise to CEO

Just about three years into her time at Vimeo, the business executive became the CEO of the company and within her first 90 days as CEO, the company acquired Livestream. At 34, Anjali was the youngest chief executive of any IAC (IAC) brand and made it to The Hollywood Reporter’s 2017 Next Gen list, which spotlights 35 executives under 35, who 'will soon run Hollywood'. “I had always hoped to one day be in a position like this. I couldn’t have imagined 10 years ago that I would be where I am today," she said, " It’s been a series of strategic choices and fortuitous events and a lot of hard work and support from my team.”

Speaking about her strategies, she shared, "I saw an opportunity to champion the creator side of the platform. So, I just started doing it. That opened up a path for me to do that formally. It was a major catalyst for why I’m sitting where I am today. You just have to permit yourself and not wait for formal permission to do it."

Empowering women

Now a mother of two, Anjali is a huge supporter of more women as business leaders. However, she points out, that it is necessary to be authentic to lead people. "Early on, I felt like I had to change the way I talked and acted to embody the more traditional make leader from the way I cut my hair to not wearing jewellery and so on. The reality is that you will be great when you are yourself. Being yourself is really hard because you have to find the version of yourself that is most authentic,” the business executive said.

While she is quite busy with her career and her ambitions may have changed from the days she dreamed of writing a Broadway show, the business executive is dedicated to building businesses for the creative minds.

Vidyut Mohan: The social entrepreneur helping India breathe clean air

(June 17, 2022) Living in Delhi, Vidyut Mohan first-hand experienced the hazardous smog caused by stubble burning in the neighbouring states of Punjab and Haryana at the onset of winter each year. Shrouded in smoke, the capital barely breathes good quality air, thus affecting health and visibility equally. Stubble burning in neighbouring states accounts for some 30 percent of winter air pollution in Delhi. This air quality emergency galvanised the 29-year-old social entrepreneur to start Takachar, a company that converts waste biomass into marketable products at a low cost. The initiative has made him earn a spot in Forbes 30 Under 30, and won him the Young Champions of the Earth 2020 award and the Earthshot Prize 2021, also known as Eco Oscars, under the Clean Our Air category. Creating a dual impact  

Born to a teacher mother and a consultant father, Vidyut's childhood trips to rural India exposed him to many problems, thus making him empathetic at a tender age. This pulled him to find solutions to bigger problems, and that's what he intended to do during his master's in sustainable energy technology and sustainable entrepreneurship at the Technische Universiteit Delft, Netherlands. A mechanical engineering graduate, Vidyut was keen to help the poor earn extra income and also solve an environmental problem. "During my thesis, I developed a prototype and tested it in fields. The pilot project in Uttarakhand was to convert local forest waste into charcoal, which managed to double the income of the locals," reveals Vidyut who is a great believer in a "self-sufficient economy."

Having lived in the Indian capital all his life, Vidyut knew that many were suffering from air pollution, and understood that it was a "wasted opportunity" if not turned around to benefit the poor communities financially and also protect the environment. This gave birth to Takachar in 2018. Along with Kevin Kung, whom Vidyut got in touch with during his masters in 2014, he developed a small-scale, low cost and portable equipment that converts waste biomass into solid fuel and fertiliser through the process of torrefaction. "We use agricultural and forest waste and treat it thermos-chemically in our machine which causes biomass to partly decompose and create carbon-rich material - char or biocoal," explains Vidyut, who is motivated to get people out of poverty as well as work for the environmental cause through Takachar. The name, Takachar, struck a chord with him as taka means money in Bengali while char refers to the carbon-rich material.

From a pilot project in Kenya to breaking ground in India   

Having already started a pilot project in Kenya in 2016 where rice husks are converted into fertilisers which later scaled up to 6000 farmers, Vidyut knew it was time to officially start in India. Researchers estimate that each year farmers burn about 23 million tonnes of paddy stubble in India which is responsible for 13 percent of the total global emissions from crop burning in India. For farmers, clearing out paddy fields by burning the stubble is the cheapest and easiest way out. However, Vidyut took some time to make the farmers understand the "multi-dimensional impact" of Takachar's technology that could help "mitigate air pollution as well create a rural livelihood." He is helping farmers in dual ways - giving them a chance to earn extra income by selling their waste to Takachar and training them to run the machine effectively, in turn creating livelihood opportunities.

It hasn’t always been an easy journey as one of the biggest challenges initially was to make farmers understand the objective and mission of Takachar. "It took us some time to convince the farmers that we aren't going to exploit them. We often work with smaller groups of farmers who don't mind taking the risk," says the social entrepreneur who became an overnight star after winning the first-ever Earthshot Prize, an award set up by Prince Williams and the Royal Foundation.

How Takachar found the limelight  

The recognition put Takachar on the global map helping it gain potential customers, partners, and corporates. "The publicity helped attract a lot of people, and gave us the chance to choose who we want to engage with," says Vidyut, for whom the award was the perfect validation as it has a rigorous selection process. He had no inclination that he would make the cut, and the announcement was nothing short of a "surprise" for him. However, his focus is to not get distracted by the opportunities coming his way. "It's important to understand that you cannot do everything and one should prioritise to have a solid foundation," adds Vidyut, who has started two pilot programmes in Haryana and Tamil Nadu.

For Takachar, localisation is the key as it has collaborated with small coconut oil mills for its pilot in Tamil Nadu. "We are using coconut shells to convert them into biomass. And for Haryana project, we are using rice husks," reveals Vidyut who has successfully converted 50 tonnes of biomass into solid fuel until now.

The social entrepreneur is happy to see some action in the green startup space with "government policies helping in fostering innovation and changing its focus from fossil fuel to clean energy." Vidyut, who likes taking long walks and travelling to unwind, wants people to be curious and "question the status quo".

With India committed to reaching net-zero emissions by 2070, Vidyut isn't ready to wait that long and instead wants immediate action from people. "We can reach the target much earlier as the onus lies on each one of us to take the initiative to conserve energy and live a simple life," the social entrepreneur signs off.

"President Kennedy's speech really fascinated me," shares Dr. Azad Madni, as he connects with Global Indian for an exclusive interview, adding, "I too wanted to contribute something to the aerospace industry, and that's what motivated me to pursue a career in this field. I have worked for Rockwell International Space Shuttle, which was NASA's first, manned, re-usable spacecraft. And today, I have several aerospace engineers under my guidance at the University of Southern California."

The flight to the USA

A Bombay lad, Dr. Madni was always fascinated by how things around him worked. But, while he loved to learn, the aerospace engineer's father was more interested in how were things being taught at his school. "My father was very interested in my education, right from the beginning. I remember, he would just show up at my school, St. Mary's High School, and would enquire about how various subjects were being taught to us. He wanted to ensure that I did not just get the knowledge from the books, but also by engaging with the equipments or machines directly," he says, adding that this influenced his life path a lot. "The Gordon Prize is all about education. My father's quest to make sure that I got practical knowledge of things had a big impression on me. Now that I am a teacher, I too ensure that my students get more than what is written in the books," laughs the engineer.

Playing with his erector set in the backyard, Dr. Madni never thought that one day he would be using his toys to teach several young students. "I used to play a lot with the erector set and build airplanes, buses, and trucks. Back then I did not realise how important that was in developing critical thinking and creative skills that can help you in later life,” Dr Madni says. Now, he encourages hands-on learning his classroom too, using Digital Twins, a “virtual replica of the physical system for people to experiment with, explore, and learn how the system behaves. And that all had its roots in the early hands-on learning that I had with the erector set," shares the engineer.

He was in school when President Kennedy made his famous speech 'We Choose to Go to the Moon', and it was then that he decided that he would move to the United States of America, so after finishing his intermediate. "That was the only goal back then - to study in the USA. So, I moved to the country in 1965. Back then, India and the USA were very different worlds, and not many Indians chose to come to the USA," shares the engineer, who has also authored several books.

Pursuing a bachelor's in engineering at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), Dr. Madni didn't face much problem adjusting after arriving in the US. However, "I couldn't get used to the American food. I missed Indian food so much," he laughs. Dr. Madni went on to pursue a master's and later earned a Ph.D. from UCLA for his work in the fields of engineering systems, computer methodology, and AI.

A scholarly journey

The year that Dr. Madni finished his graduation was the same year that Neil Armstrong first set foot on the lunar soil. However, as the US rejoiced, Dr. Madni faced new challenges. "Well, the plan was to find a job soon after graduation and start earning. However, it was a challenging period for the country facing an economic downturn. A few of my friends, who studied with me, gave up looking for a job and went into selling real estate or working in restaurants," he shares. Even though things looked bleak, Dr. Madni decided to stay the course. "The thing was, while I was studying, I lost my father and had responsibilities towards my family back in India. I had to earn.” It took him a while but he found his first job as an engineer, starting his career in the USA. “While I was pursuing my doctorate, I was interviewed by Rockwell International and soon started working on NASA's space shuttle programme. So, it was kind of dream-come-true moment for me."

In 1994, the engineer also founded a company - Intelligent Systems Technology, Inc, which is an award-winning hi-tech company specialising in model-based approaches for addressing scientific and societal problems of national and global significance. "The idea is to advance the field of augmented intelligence and human-machine teaming to maximise the joint performance of human-machine teams," he shares.

But then, how does someone with so much industrial experience move to academia? "My company's success was possibly one of the reasons why the University of Southern California approached me to take over one of their flagship programmes, Systems Architecting and Engineering. So, I have been teaching since 2006-07 academic year," he says. Dr. Madni is currently USC's most accomplished multidisciplinary faculty with significant achievements across multiple technical fields. He holds the Northrop Grumman Fred O’Green Chair in Engineering and has received many awards for his contributions. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and a Fellow of IEEE. Dr. Madni has led 97 research projects and received over $100 million in funding from government agencies and companies like NASA, NIST, Boeing, and General Motors.

A recipient of over 100 awards, including the most recent 2023 NAE Gordon Prize, the AIAA/ASEE Leland Atwood Award for excellence in engineering education and research, the 2019 ASEE/INCOSE Outstanding Systems Engineering Educator Award, and the 2013 IISE Innovation in Curriculum Development Prize, Dr. Madni shares that he is far from retirement still. "Currently, I am working on several research projects, including autonomous self-driving cars, unmanned aerial vehicles, and game-based simulations for STEM education. These researches will take me at least six to eight years and are being funded by both the government and private sector.”

But the engineer is not just an academician. Dr. Madni has a rich history of giving back and has been honoured with various awards for his charitable efforts. In 2021, he was presented with the Benefactor Award by the International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE) in recognition of his many years of philanthropy and mentorship to engineering students worldwide. This marked only the second time in 31 years that INCOSE granted this award. In 2020, he was also honoured with the IEEE-USA Entrepreneurship Achievement Award for his lifetime of contributions to innovation, mentorship, and philanthropy. Additionally, he holds life memberships in the NAE Marie Curie Donor Society and the NAE Albert Einstein Donor Society.

Surabhi Yadav: Launching dreams through Sajhe Sapne

(April 26, 2023) “One day, women of Indian villages will be known for their potential, not their pain, for their aspirations, not their needs, for being leaders, not being led. We will make it happen, one Sapna Center at a time.” This is social entrepreneur Surabhi Yadav’s vision, which she realises through her project, Sajhe Sapne (Shared Dreams). The IIT-Delhi and University of California, Berkeley alumna has been working relentlessly to launch the careers of rural women in modern workforce.  Since 2020, Surabhi and her team have enabled rural young women grow their skills, salary, satisfaction, support system and most importantly, their opinions. Popularly known as ‘Sapna Centres’, the Sajhe Sapne training centres are run for a cohort of trainees called ‘Sapnewaalis’ (women who dare to dream). “Sajhe Sapne’s first cohort was from Bihar's Musahar community, one of India's poorest and most socially ostracised castes,” says Surabhi, in an interview with Global Indian. 

Launching dreams  

“There is no channel or pathway that connects modern workforce with villages,” says Surabhi and this is the gap she has chosen to address. Her non-profit is not into just providing livelihoods and creating gig workers but focuses on working towards the career development of rural women. 

“I have put into Sajhe Sapne all that I have learned over the years,” remarks Surabhi. Growing up in a Madhya Pradesh village, she was no stranger to rural women resigning themselves to sub-optimal dreams. She thought it was a matter of courage and wondered why these women refused to dream big. “I remember many women in my extended family telling me that when you grow up, employ me as your chaprasi (peon).” Why do they want to be just be satisfied with that, Surabhi often wondered.

“With Sajhe Sapne, my goal is to shift the mindset of rural women from that of a livelihood to one of career development,” Surabhi says. “The ideas that encompass a growth path make the full form of ‘Sajhe’ – “S for skills, A for agency, J for job retention, H for hope and sense of possibilities and E for ecosystem of support,” she adds. 

Over the last three years, Sajhe Sapne has trained a cohort of women from states like Himachal Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, MP, UP, Punjab and Maharashtra, from its Kandbari facility. “Our Sapnewalis have fire in their bellies and Sajhe Sapne fans that fire,” tells the founder and CEO. 

The Sajhe Sapne model of growth 

When Surabhi started out in 2020, she was brimming with ideas, but funds were scarce, so she settled on crowdfunding. She set out to arrange ₹15 lakhs for the startup but ended up getting ₹26 lakh within three days of her crowdfunding campaign. It wasn’t just family and friends – celebrities also took notice and re-tweeted her initiative, helping her exceed her collection target. “In fact, more people were willing to contribute but I stopped the campaign midway because I did not want to use so much money on the pilot run of my project, despite friends advising not to do so and allow money to come.” 

Now, Surabhi has come up with a unique model in which she instils a sense of responsibility in the alumni group (Sabal Sapna Dal), She tells them, “Once you graduate with a job, pay for someone just like someone paid for you.” 

She wants to make her alumni network strong enough to be the biggest investors, influencers and inspiration for the future batches. There is an expenditure of ₹96,000 on each trainee in the year-long residential programme at Sapna Centre. Surabhi is proud of the fact that her funding model has already started gaining momentum. “So far ₹4.5 lakhs have already been donated by former trainees,” she shares joyfully.

Sajhe Sapne has three career tracks for women to choose from to shape their careers - project management, primary math teaching and coding and web development. After they finish the year-long training programme, while Surabhi and her team try to bring employment opportunities, the programme also prepares women to look for job opportunities and apply on their own. “We try to bring in work opportunities from progressive organisations that value diversity,” Surabhi explains.  

The organisation also runs a one of its kind podcasts by rural women where people get to learn from their life and derive leadership lessons from what they have done differently to change their lives for the better. Such has been the impact of Sajhe Sapne's idea that apart from Surabhi’s eight-member team, some very well-placed individuals like a San Francisco based product designer working in Uber are volunteering for the organisation deeply believing in the cause. 

Life in IIT-Delhi 

Surabhi grew up in Khargone Madhya Pradesh and studied there until standard 12, after which she went on to do her BTech and MTech in bio-chemical engineering and biotechnology from IIT Delhi.  

Breaking barriers, she was the first person in her village to move to a big city to study. People in her community didn’t even understand the magnitude of her achievement when she secured an admission to IIT. “It was just another technical institute to them,” she says. “When I came to IIT, I realised it’s a big mela where you get to engage in so many things. I was awestruck with the three floors of library that had books that I could touch. It was such a beautiful experience for me coming from a village of scare resources,” she adds. “IIT became a big playground for me to explore interesting things.”

Surabhi’s interest in social development had begun early in her life, so after her M.Tech, she remained at IIT to work with a Professor of the Humanities and Social Sciences department as a research assistant. While thinking, reading, and writing about inclusive innovation and how to use technology for social good, she was soon neck-deep into development studies. It was the impetus that led her to University of California, Berkley to do a masters in development practice.  

Realising her dreams 

When she returned from California, Surabhi worked for an NGO for a short while and then started on her dream project. 

“My father is the first person in the village to get a full education and a sarkari job. My mother fought to study until class eight. Since they worked very hard for their own education, they were very committed to their children’s education. Also, they treated social work as a way of living and not as a moral obligation,” Surabhi tells. This is where her dedication for social development stems from.

Now a retired horticulturist, her father has helped many farmers without any benefit. “Being raised by such parents filled me with a sense of responsibility towards my community. In my formative years, I might not have known the phrase ‘social development’ but I grew up learning the importance of giving back to my community,” 

Project Basanti and BIRD 

Surabhi has been involved in other projects around gender equity and the rural development space. Her feminist bent led her to also launch Project Basanti – Women in Leisure, a multi-media project named after her late mother. “It explores time as a feminist issue and consists of a rich repository of photos and videos of women and girls taking time out for themselves.” Surabhi has been happy to see more than 20,000 people participating in interesting social media conversations around women in leisure. “Have you seen a well-rested woman,” asks Surabhi. Project Basanti is all about capturing such rare moments. 

Surabhi is also a co-lead at Billion Readers – BIRD, an IIM-Ahmedabad project. There, she assists the BIRD team to support the government’s language literacy initiative and improving reading habits of individuals. While people watch entertaining content on television or YouTube, subtitles encourage them to read, without pushing them to do so.  

Driven by purpose amidst nature  

To be able to work from Kanbadi is like living a dream for Surabhi. “Nature was important, a small place was important, not having a crowd was important. I get the quiet, I get the mountains and I get this beautiful organisation to run with a wonderful team,’ she smiles. “This place gives me the tranquility that requires to think creatively,” tells Surabhi who has been learning flute and sitar amidst the blissful quietude.

“I am walking in my balcony with the Dhauladhar mountain range and lush green fields in front of me,” she smiles as we come to the end of our conversation. Life is just the way she wanted it to be. Working amidst the beauty of nature, Surabhi is polishing up her development model while corporates line up to partner with her to open Sajhe Sapne's Sapna Centres in other villages as part of their CSR activities.
