Actor Kunal Nayyar: The Delhi boy who became one of the world’s highest-paid TV stars

(November 2, 2023) The year 2024 is set to bring some exciting space-themed movies, and one of them is Netflix’s “Spaceman“, which is based on a book called “Spaceman of Bohemia” by Jaroslav Kalfař. But what’s making this movie even more special is the return of Kunal Nayyar, an actor from India who you might remember as Dr. Rajesh Koothrappali from the famous American TV show “The Big Bang Theory“. Slotted to play Petr, a space engineer, Kunal is making a comeback to the silver screen after a hiatus of about two years.

Even though the actor’s journey in the all-white industry hasn’t been easy, Kunal’s determination earned him a place on the list of highest-paid TV actors. Interestingly, Kunal’s financial success during his tenure on “The Big Bang Theory” laid a solid groundwork for his career after the show. His current net worth of $45 million is a remarkable tale of skill, commitment, and shrewd decision-making in the entertainment industry. “I still have a small voice in my head which sometimes wonders how all this happened,” the actor said during a recent conference, adding, “But, I also must say that I always believed in myself and my abilities. In the industry that I am in, one has to have faith in themselves to succeed. We go to so many auditions and never really know if you are going to get called back from any of the producers. I think my belief that I would be able to achieve something big someday, came from my parents.”

Theatre — his first love

It was in London that his story began but it soon shifted to India where he moved with his family at the age of four. New Delhi became the actor’s new abode. After finishing his schooling at St Columba’s School, Kunal moved to the United States to pursue a Bachelor in Business Administration in Finance from the University of Portland, Oregon. But the shift was not so easy for this Delhi boy at the beginning – the actor often found himself lonely, missing his family and friends back home. However, it was precisely this sense of isolation that would become the catalyst for a transformative chapter in the actor’s life.

Well, that, however, wasn’t the only reason that Kunal started auditioning for roles in plays happening at the University. The actor had actually fallen for a girl, who was also a part of the University theatre programme. And so, he devised a plan – audition for the play, secure a part, and relish plenty of quality rehearsal moments with the girl. “The funny thing is,” Kunal said laughing at an interview, “I fell out of love with her, and fell in love with my one true love—acting.”

At his very first college theatre audition, the actor had already demonstrated a knack for embracing new experiences. “You know, the theatre’s a place where people who sort of feel like misfits can have a family because theatre is accepting of all types. I felt at home,” he shared. Soon enough, he found himself taking acting classes. What had begun as a hobby soon transformed into a life-long passion. “I was on stage. I had a moment where I had completely, for the first time in my life, discovered what it means to be present, and it happened on stage. I finished the play and went home and told my parents, ‘This is what I want to do for the rest of my life’, and I am going to do it.”

His aspiration to make a name for himself in the world of acting led him to Temple University in Philadelphia. There, he honed his craft while pursuing a Master of Fine Arts degree in acting. This journey helped him get a few American TV commercials, and the actor eventually bagged several shows on the prestigious London stage. However, it was his involvement in the 2006 production, “Huck & Holden“, that truly turned heads and put this Indian talent on the map in the United States. The breakthrough came in 2007, when he landed a significant role with a special appearance on the popular CBS show “NCIS,” portraying an Iraqi terrorist.

It all started with the Big Bang

Kunal was determined to shatter the stereotypes that often confined Asian actors on American TV. He seized an opportunity to audition for the role of a scientist in “The Big Bang Theory“, and as the saying goes, the rest is history. This immensely popular series propelled the actor to stardom, where his impeccable comedic timing shone. His character, Raj Koothrappali, wore his Indianness proudly, endearing himself to viewers. However, what many don’t know is that the show’s creators originally envisioned the character as a first-generation American. But they were so impressed by Kunal’s audition that they reimagined the character to reflect his background as an immigrant from India.

“They allowed me to really be an Indian, who has Indian qualities who doesn’t run away from some of them I think they really found a nice balance with Raj,” the actor said. Such has been the popularity of the show that it has been nominated for multiple Emmy, Golden Globe, SAG, and Critic’s Choice Awards and has won the People’s Choice Award for favourite network TV comedy three years in a row. During its remarkable 12-year run, “The Big Bang Theory” made Kunal a household name across the United States. However, amid his television success, the actor diversified his portfolio by venturing into film and Broadway productions. He even lent his voice to the 2012 animated hit, “Ice Age: Continental Drift,” and embarked on his film career with the 2014 romantic comedy, “Dr. Cabbie“.

And Kunal’s creativity didn’t stop there. He authored a book titled “Yes, My Accent is Real: and Some Other Things I Haven’t Told You“. This humorous memoir delves into his experiences growing up in India and traces his journey to becoming an actor in Los Angeles. “I didn’t want the book to be a self-therapy session. But I wanted to share a side of the journey that was unglamorous. The general perception around Hollywood is that it is this perfect place with rich people and tanned bodies, fast cars, and movie premieres. And sometimes it can be that, but under all that materialism lies a strong and diverse heartbeat. I wanted to humanise the experience,” he shared.

Loving what he does

The 40-year-old actor, who has played many onscreen roles, has become a part of the South Asian tribe that has been putting India on the world map. After “The Big Bang Theory“, the actor’s focus shifted from acting to a diverse array of projects. The actor and his wife, former Miss India Neha Kapur, are dedicated to leveraging their platform for a greater cause, exemplified by their generous scholarships for students at the University of Portland specialising in Performing & Fine Arts. They also extend their support by providing funding for guest artists and the University’s annual participation in the American College Theater Festival.

The actor’s heartfelt desire is to see young aspiring actors complete their education and follow their dreams, much like he did. “I love what I do. Regardless of the destination, it is important to love the journey. Love what you do. Let the universe decide the rest,” said the actor addressing the University students during a conference.

Following a rigorous and competitive process, which concluded after what OUH described as an extensive national and international recruitment search, the Indian medic has got appointed to the post permanently. 

“It is a privilege to be asked to lead OUH on a permanent basis. I look forward to continue working with colleagues at OUH, our partners in the health and social care system in Oxfordshire and across the BOB Integrated Care System, our partner universities, and Oxford Hospitals Charity, to ensure the highest quality of research and innovation enabled care for our patients and populations,” she said after the announcement was made. 

Shining bright 

The Indian origin doctor managed to impress the final selection panel comprising the Trust's Chair, Professor Sir Jonathan Montgomery, two non-executive directors, lead governor, the chair of the Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and Berkshire West Integrated Care Board (BOB ICB), and the regional director for NHS England's South East region during the final interview.

The OUH said in its press release that "all members of the interview panel unanimously agreed that Meghana was the preferred candidate for appointment." The recommendation was approved at a meeting of the Council of Governors. 

The impactful leader 

During her successful stint as the Chief Medical Officer of the OUH NHS Foundation Trust, the Indian-origin medic had led the development of clinical strategy at the institution. She was responsible for clinical quality, medical education, risk management, legal services, and research and development. Dr Meghana was also leading a team of over 1,000 doctors, and undertaking clinical office-based gynaecology.

During the interim period as CEO, Professor Meghana performed her duties with élan, displaying exceptional leadership. In a previous interview published by British Medical Journal (BMJ), the renowned UK medic had said, “Leaders should be accountable for their actions and responsible for maintaining staff and patient safety.”

From Bombay to UK 

After finishing her MBBS from the University of Bombay, the Global Indian moved to the Oxford Deanery in the UK, where she specialised in obstetrics and gynaecology. Later, life took her to the US, where she was a visiting lecturer of urogynaecology at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.  

Her career in United Kingdom boasts several coveted roles. Dr Meghana has served as consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist, clinical director and then divisional director at Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, England. She contributed to the growth of University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust (UHCW) as Chief Medical Officer (CMO) and consequently the Deputy Chief Executive (DCE), before joining Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust.

Having received her MBA from Oxford Brookes University, she moved to the prestigious INSEAD University in Fontainebleau, for the Innovating Health for Tomorrow programme. Dr Meghana has done impactful work as a founding senior fellow of the faculty of medical leadership and management, an associate fellow at Green Templeton College, University of Oxford, and a professor of practice at Warwick University.

During her maiden trip, she happened to witness a dance performance at Mahabalipuram. "A beautiful dancer, live orchestra, and ancient temple as a background. It was an unforgettable experience for me," she revealed.

Upon her return to Almaty, she couldn't get the memory of the surreal experience out of her mind and was fortunate to find a teacher - Akmaral Kainazarova - who had learnt Indian classical dance in India. It was at the Indian Cultural Center of Indian Embassy in Almaty that Oxana learnt her first-ever Bharatanatyam steps. "Deep within I knew straight away that I want to go forward, and find ways to become a professional," she added.

Kazakhstan to India - a learning curve

In a couple of months, fortune smiled upon her as she secured a four-year scholarship from the Indian Council for Cultural Relations to study Bharatanatyam at Kalakshetra College of Fine Arts. Passionate about her craft, she bid farewell to Kazakhstan and landed in Chennai to "learn the beautiful dance art."

Her hard work and perseverance paid off as she received a scholarship from the Indian government in 2002 to attend Kalakshetra College of Fine Arts in Chennai, India. "The Indian government sponsors foreign nationals to come and learn their culture. Once they return, they will promote Indian culture." For the next five years, she immersed herself in Indian classical music, dance, philosophy, and religion. Amid her academic pursuits, Oxana managed to enter into marriage, and in 2007, her husband's transfer led them to relocate to Hong Kong.

Promoting Bharatanatyam in Hong Kong

Moving to an "entrepreneurial city", Oxana harboured dreams of starting her own dance company. But was scared to take that leap of faith. "I wanted to practice my art, to teach, to perform but I couldn't find anyone who would employ me and give me a good salary. But I had students. So I started looking into legal opportunities to teach," she said in an interview. Despite trying various options like nonprofits and associations, nothing clicked for Oxana until she found people who were keen to learn Bharatanatyam from her. "I had to rethink my teaching ideas and make it interesting for regular students as well as newcomers. That was the biggest learning curve for me and the most valuable experience of making this traditional art form into something that would be interesting for people who had never tried it," revealed Oxana. This propelled her to start her company - Cosmic Dance - which found more clients through strong word of mouth.

For someone who learned Bharatanatyam in India, teaching to non-Indian students got a little tricky at times. "A student learning Bharatnatyam outside India would get a lot of pressure trying to understand the devotional aspect and historical background of this art form. Non–Indian students usually have difficulty accepting and executing abhinaya, they are merely attracted by the technical beauty of Bharatanatyam," said Oxana. However, she believes that it's a good way to introduce a new art form, and the more they learn, the more their interest develops in the art form.

Taking the artform to Scotland

Having made Bharatanatyam popular in Hong Kong with her dance company, Oxana relocated to Edinburgh in 2019 where she is now working towards establishing herself in Scotland. "I am curious about how other dance/movement disciplines work, what their philosophical approaches are, what their applicable techniques are, and how they can be incorporated into my practice," she said.

It's been two decades that Bharatanatyam has become a big part of Oxana's life. "It is not only a matter of always practicing in order to stay in good physical shape, there is always the mental pressure of remembering hundreds of dance routines and choreographing new songs in a short period of time but in the end, it makes me happy," she said.

Her journey from Kazakhstan to embracing the Indian dance form of Bharatanatyam is a true example of the power of art to bridge cultures and transcend boundaries. Through her dedication and passion, she has not only mastered this ancient art but has also become a guiding light of cultural exchange, spreading the beauty and richness of Bharatanatyam to audiences around the world. On a high note: Maestro Debashish Chaudhuri is a shining star in the music world

(November 23, 2022) His first job was as a music teacher at St. James' School, Kolkata in 1995. Surrounded by several instruments, a young Debashish Chaudhuri would often daydream about giving a stage performance someday. Little did the maestro know that one day, he would become one of the finest symphonic conductors of Western classical music. Based in the Czech Republic, the maestro has worked with several leading European orchestras such as Prague Philharmonia PKF, Brno Philharmonic, Czech Chamber Orchestra Pardubice, Plzen Radio Symphony, South Bohemian Chamber Philharmonic, Karlovy Vary Symphony, Hradec Kralove Philharmonic, Zlin Philharmonic, Moravian Philharmonic, State Philharmonic Zilina and several others. "Music was something that truly and deeply fulfilled me. I knew well before my teens that music had to be a part of my life, which was quite early on. I don’t mean to say that I wanted to be a conductor at once, at that early age," the maestro said during an interview with Serenade Magazine, adding, "I have always been extremely passionate about music, even before I could walk."

Born to music

There is hardly any home in the entire state of West Bengal without a musical instrument. And maestro Chaudhuri's house was no different. His childhood was spent listening to a lot of Rabindra Sangeet, Bollywood, and other folk songs. "I guess this love (for music) was kindled by my parents, both of whom love music. Ever since I remember, there was always some music playing in the house. Even my grandparents – we all were lovers of music and in Bengal, it’s quite normal to have all sorts of songs sung in the house throughout the year," he shared.

Growing up, Chaudhari moved to various cities, and even countries, as a result of his father's frequent postings. Everywhere he went, he would try to learn more about the local music and art, which inspired him further to pursue a career in music. It was during his teenage years that he decided to leave his academics and concentrate on his music studies. "India isn’t typically a country where society would encourage a musical career with the same enthusiasm and awe, as in the West, not even in Calcutta. I recall several people discouraging me when I decided not to further my academics and concentrate on music alone. Fortunately, those people weren’t my parents or some other very key people, who believed in me and gave me that space to grow in the way that they all felt was natural for me," the maestro recalled.

After finishing his diploma in music, Chaudhari joined St Jame's school in Kolkata, where he conducted their four choirs. This experience pushed him to learn more about European music and he eventually founded the St. James' School Orchestra and the Calcutta School of Music Chamber Orchestra, over the next few years.

The heart of Europe

Three years after he got his first job, Chaudhuri got a chance to move to Prague and was the first Indian to have studied at the Prague Conservatory. He also trained under maestro Gianluigi Gelmetti at the Chigiana Academy of Music in Siena, Italy, where he studied symphonic conduct.

"I suppose, the influence in Prague was at various stages and by various individuals. Not only one’s teachers but also the fact that you can come into such close contact with such great international musicians and talk to them, hear their views and share their experiences. So many names were just on the labels of cassettes and records for me and suddenly, you are talking to them without any “false barriers”! My love for Dvořák’s music was cemented very early on due to the closeness I developed quite by chance, with his descendants and family; they are among my closest and oldest friends here now," the maestro said.

Conducting acclaimed Philharmonics around the world

In 2004, Chaudhuri did his conducting at the Janáček Festival in his Silesian hometown of Hukvaldy, at the annual festival. Since then, he has worked with various orchestras, including Bohuslav Martinů Philharmonic Orchestra, Prague Philharmonia, Stratus Chamber Orchestra (USA), Žilina State Chamber Orchestra (Slovakia), and Karlovy Vary Philharmonic Orchestra.

Still connected to his roots, the maestro was the brains behind rediscovering the original orchestral score of Czech composer J.B Foerster's song cycle based on Rabindranath Tagore's 'Gitanjali'. "Being a non-European conductor isn’t all that rare, there are so many now and they are often better received than the native ones today. I guess that there were challenges but I never took them in that light and I don’t want to start thinking that way now, after so many years. Whatever they may have been, one had to cross them if one wanted to get to one’s goals. Sometimes it’s better not to know the problems and challenges beforehand," he had said, when asked about the greatest challenges he faced in his career, in a recent interview.

Married to one of the most applauded Czech pianists, Jana, Chaudhuri wishes to help young Indian artists, who are passionate about making a career in music. "We decided a few years back to start a family scholarship for Indian citizens, based out of India, who wish to further their knowledge in European classical music. Since 2016, in connection with the Calcutta School of Music, we sponsor such people to attend the now 25-year-old Ameropa Music Courses in Prague. Over the summer months, they come into contact with others from around the world and teachers, who guide them in a very intense concert-filled course in solo and chamber music. The course can be attended by anyone who doesn’t get the scholarships as well, as they are paid and open to all who reach the standards required. Talent is a massive resource in India we believe," the musician shared.

The success of her first hotel propelled the entrepreneur into acquiring Malden Hall Student Accommodation in London in 2014, The Lace Market Hotel in Nottingham in 2015, Empire Filling Station, The Georgian Hollies Hotel Blackpool in 2020 and The Lawton and Beechfield Hotels in 2022. “My elder daughter Diya helps me with the UK businesses. I intervene only when it is required,” says Roopal, whose younger daughter Krishna is in Grade 10 at Woodstock School in Mussoorie.

Natural-born businesswoman

Born in Mumbai in October 1974, her family moved to Hyderabad, the city Roopal calls home. “I was the middle child and most pampered,” recalls Roopal, who did her schooling from St Ann’s High school. “I was thoroughly a teacher’s pet,” she says of her student days.

Roopal then went to Kasturba Gandhi College and graduated with a degree in Commerce. “I was introduced to the nuances of book keeping by my father at our Industrial goods store. This was where I began to appreciate what really went into running an establishment,” says Roopal, who belongs to a Gujarati Brahmin family. When she turned 19, Roopal decided to marry her high school sweetheart Uday, completing her degree after the wedding. “Besides studying economics, commerce and civics, I had taken up painting and arts in my free time. Back then, I was not quite decided on what sort of business I wanted to explore,” says the entrepreneur.

The launch of Jalwa

In the late 1990s, when the party scene was just picking up, she threw the biggest millennium party in Hyderabad, which was a hugely successful event. “We then set up an event management company — Jalwa in 1999. It quickly gained market share and rose to become a pioneer in brand building, store promotions, rock shows, theme nights and much more,” she says.

At Jalwa, the Pilanis were doing everything, from corporate events for Coke, Pepsi and GE to landmark parties. “Events kept happening throughout the year, non-stop. We got busier curating the events (sometimes, round-the-clock!) to make it the best. It earned us trust and respect. The experiences taught me everything that I needed to know about how to run a business successfully and take risks all along,” says the entrepreneur.

Africa calling

In 2002, the Pilanis moved to Nigeria, where Uday set up a Mosquito Coil unit in Kano. “Uday’s family has a long history with Nigeria and therefore we decided to move,” she informs. Four years later, the business was  going through a tough phase. Roopal took the responsibility of managing the factory during the more challenging night shift, and even ensured higher productivity than the day shift. “We had a 24/7 operation with 150 employees enabling an end-to-end production,” says the entrepreneur, for whom those were the most challenging years of her life. It forced her to dig deep within herself to find the strength and build tenacity.

In 2009, the factory having been sold, the family shifted base to Benin in Southern Nigeria, where her husband took up a job as the Managing Director of a large multinational company producing palm oil. “We were surrounded by thousands of hectares of green fields, splendid weather and a small zoo. It was paradise, and my children spent their time in nature, uninterrupted by the hassles of technology. They rode horses and caught scorpions,” she smiles.

Around that time, Roopal decided that the family must have a secure sustainable income – but this kind of financial stability was more likely to be found in a developed country. “Moreover, I had taken my break and was itching to get back to work. The UK was a good option and it was a favourable time to invest. It was a short flight from Nigeria,” says Roopal.

Business in the UK

Thereafter, the entrepreneur went on a hotel buying spree in the UK. “I moved to London with my daughters while Uday made frequent trips from Nigeria. We had an exciting progression to give hotels,” informs Roopal, who is now mentoring her elder daughter as she learns the ropes. Roopal didn’t stop there. She went on to invest in Invente Innovation Labs in India which does staff augmentation for businesses, sales and growth consultants RyzeUP Inc USA, and Wowsome XR in UK, a media company. “Tech is the future, so we invest in companies which are making cutting edge advancements in virtual and augmented reality, AI and gamification,” informs the entrepreneur, who has also invested in a long line of startups.

Giving back

Philanthropy work keeps Roopal busy too as giving back is a top priority for her. “Sponsoring initiatives linked to women empowerment, child health and literacy gives me a sense of satisfaction,” says the entrepreneur. She is a member of the Arch Klump Society, which is Rotary's highest tier of Donors. She has donated USD 250,000 given to various causes from her personal account.

Now that her investments are taking care of themselves and business is good, Roopal likes to spend time with her family. “We now spend our days doing what we like. A few rallies a year, endless travelling and road trips. Family workouts are a must,” smiles Roopal, who watches Shark Tank and action movies post dinner.

Entrepreneur Shruti Kapoor’s recipe for success: Combining passion, innovation, and customer-centricity

(May 8, 2023) In today's fast-paced and competitive business environment, having real-time insights into sales encounters can make all the difference. And Shruti Kapoor, the Co-founder and CEO of Wingman, a SaaS solution that delivers real-time information for sales teams, has experienced this firsthand. The entrepreneur's journey began while managing a sales team at an Indian fintech start-up in 2017. However, she found it difficult to get the information they required from their CRM since there didn't seem to be a workable substitute,she decided to filll the gap. After some deliberations the entrepreneur and her co-founders embarked on a mission to create a solution to transform the way sales teams approach their interactions with customers, leading to the birth of Wingman. The following year, they introduced the first iteration of their product. Their journey, however, wasn't an easy one - their first big task was to attract customers. In the first 40 encounters they had with potential clients, they were unable to close any deals, she recollects. “Instead of thinking about our revenue, we thought the other way round. We began calculating how to impact revenue for the customers. The more you can think in terms of not, ‘how do I get more revenue for myself?’ but, ‘how do I get more revenue for my customers?’ the more your message is likely to steer in the right direction," shared the entrepreneur, as she sat down for an interview with Global Indian.

Always making the right investments

Having been born in Mainpuri - a small town in Uttar Pradesh, India – ‘investing in education was a big bet’. “It was a place is better known for tobacco and bandits than for education and development," the entrepreneur shares while talking about her childhood, adding, "My parents made the big bet to invest in our education and moved to Lucknow to give us access to better opportunities and it paid off." She was selected for the SIA scholarship to study in Singapore for her A-levels. The exposure and confidence of being independent at that age helped her in many future aspects of life and how she would interact with the world in general.

Building an empire

For a commoner, Wingman can be defined as a conversation intelligence platform for sales teams. According to the entrepreneur, Wingman started as a simple idea - "there is a wealth of information in conversations with customers - but it is currently not captured, most sales calls in B2B were not recorded, or too inefficient to access as listening to recorded calls is time-consuming. If we could record, transcribe and analyze the calls at scale we could provide businesses access to insights like.”

She adds, "I was leading the go-to-market function for a global fintech company in India called Payoneer. The team in India was three people and all products and marketing were centralised. Very often I would face situations where I felt if the marketing or product leaders had heard it from the customers; they would have understood it much better.”

On the other hand, organising a call between a prospect and a team in another time zone was always challenging. The entrepreneur expresses, "At Payoneer, I first learned about sales and marketing and the entire process that must take place to bring marketing, sales, customer success, and product together to ensure that they are not just creating the right things, but also communicating them to customers in the correct way.”

Wingman was created as a method to bring everything together and address what she perceived to be the biggest disconnect: a split between front-line sales and marketing and product, which are located further away from the customer, she maintains. According to the entrepreneur, marketing and product always wanted to know what the customers were saying and they had no way of finding out. “Going on calls all the time and then trying to explain to marketing what the customers are saying was extremely frustrating for sales. For scattered or remote teams that might not even share an office, the issue is significantly worse.”

Wingman, which monitors customer interactions and applies AI to produce insights, action items, and more, is the solution for her. “The issue was that when COVID struck, it was still very much in beta, endangering growth. Today, with an over 3x growth over the previous and having been bought by Clari – a Unicorn," she adds.

Getting a foothold

Wingman was a global company on day one - while the team was based in India, so they were very clear that they wanted to target the US market initially. She explains, “So we made early efforts to connect with potential buyers in the US. This was through our network - friends' friends as they say.”

Once they had some early customers, they extended this by hiring a local salesperson in the US and a sales agency that could do mass outreach on their behalf. However, both those efforts didn't pay off the way we expected and we then spent more time building the brand and case studies etc, the entrepreneur recalls. Once those things were in place, they saw inbound traffic, and outbound both began to build up. “My major takeaway from this was: think of go-to-market in terms of building and scaling trust.”

A venture with a difference

Shruti's company focuses on reducing 'time to revenue' for its customers. It raised $2.33 million in the seed round, led by Venture Highway, Speciale Invest, and Y Combinator back in 2019. Last year it was acquired by Clari to become part of their revenue platform. Clari is a well-known unicorn in the sales technology space with investors like Sequoia and Blackstone.

The company is currently targeting B2B clients - because business sales follow a certain cadence and requires multiple touch points - making Wingman’s feedback and analytics impactful. It has on-boarded hundreds of companies such as Bandwidth and Fabric etc. The entrepreneur remarks, “Without Wingman it takes 3-8 months to fully ramp up a new sales rep. A large part of this is in training them on best practices, tribal knowledge, and handling customer objections. With Wingman, companies can cut this time by 30-50 percent."

The former Morgan Stanley banker says that the biggest cost for the company is that of customer acquisition — the industry number for this is close to 9-10 months of the revenue for the first year. The second biggest cost is cloud computing — for example, speech-to-text can cost around two cents per minute. “Once the scale sets in and once you have customers who are expanding, infrastructure costs can be minimised and the margin can be above 60 percent," she emphasises. As far as the entrepreneur's future vision is concerned she wants to make intelligence from customer conversations a part of every revenue-critical workflow.

The road ahead

While listing out some points, the entrepreneur says that they have focused on building a platform that, firstly is specialised for the B2B sales use-case so customers get a lot of value on day one without having to customise the system. "Secondly, we focus on delivering value to the whole sales team - so the platform automatically provides live coaching and feedback to the sales reps rather than just giving data and analytics to managers to then give feedback to sales reps," she shares.

The young entrepreneur stresses the fact that it becomes very hard as an entrepreneur, especially if you are trying to build a global company with multiple time zones. Shruti says, "I try to block some time daily on my calendar in the evenings so I can make sure I can be with my husband and child. I try to keep Saturdays mostly free."

Shruti staunchly believes in the fact that in the early days you are your company and you will have to be prepared to be the face of the company. "Your most important job at the company will change every six months - be prepared and open to it. It can be a hard and lonely journey. Try to build your ecosystem along the way," says the entrepreneur, as she signs off.
